Are new virtual reality technologies going to be the
levers that will move the Cockpit Crew training world to
another level?
Introduction | Overview
2
Technology that interact with our reality perception
has taken leaps and bounds in the last lustrums.
State-of-the-art leads us to look forward, using the
tools we have, to revolutionize learning methods in
the coming years.

Introduction | Overview
Be ready for the future
Be versatile
new FSTD generation has to
be part of a training
package, ready for new
regulation approach.

How to exploit new Technology & which is the plus | Software Platform
6TXT e-solutions – Confidential & proprietary
• Streamline Architecture open to OEMs, SIM-MAKER and COTS solution
We don’t have to reinvent the simulations
• Technology independent
• Possibility to Integrate tailored training solution, exploiting agile
approach and AI capability
• Portability, Multiple deployment on different platform with the same
common content

If hardware is available, trainee will interact with
physical components, otherwise the simulation
will be automatically configured to run only in
the virtual world, preserving all the functionality
but the physical effort
Platform design allow to
Configure the simulation
environment to be able to
run in different configuration
12
• Improve the learning curve guiding millennials trainees with familiartechnology
• AI will interact with simulation, customizing training programs for
specific students needs
• Same software during different training phase thanks to portability

Immersive virtual reality aligned and blended to a physical cockpit
Technology applied to new (qualifiable?) FSTD generation
14
We are developing a demonstrator based on the illustrate philosophy.
• Avionic, certified flight model & CLS and a professional IG are
integrated and virtualized thanks WEAVR platform.
• Hands model and tracking system are incorporated into the simulation

• Low-Cost Physical cockpit
• Cockpit panels and displays
➢no need for «nice looking» components
➢no back lights
➢dead display screens
• Virtual Reality Equipment and Hands
Tracking Devices
• Flight Controls System
Complexity is Inversely
related to Extended
Reality evolution
Virtualization permit to
simplify HW
components
16
• The user is immersed in a realistic, interactive replica of the cockpit, aligned with
physical components
• The user can interact with the real cockpit elements (switches, buttons, knobs,
flight controls) during an operative or guided scenario or Free-play
• Interactions are replicated in the virtual environment for an immersive and
increased realistic feeling
• Local or remote collaboration can be added allowing pilot and co-pilot (or
instructor) to share the same physical/virtual environment
• IA applied to simulation to drive the students and analyze the results during
training sessions
• Out of the window scenario and avionics video streams injected into the virtual
world

xR Flight Deck | Key Features
17
• The most interesting technical challenge, since the state of the art,
is the accurate interaction of the hands with the cockpit
components.
• Tolerance required is the order of magnitude of mm
• Tracking system and model need to be improved to avoid
continuous calibration
• Resolution and field of view of the VR Visor still not fully
satisfactory. However, it’s improving very fast

Challenge and Obstacle| Technical
18
• Nowadays There are no reliable and consolidated strategy for
qualification
• Actually, for civil aviation, VR trainers do not provide credit to
pilots.
• How the regulation will change in the future?
• OEM’s cooperation for Data distribution is fundamental

Conclusions
• Technology is evolving fast, and what today is a challenge shortly
could be trivial
• In some specific task the training effectiveness is already clear, this
is encouraging for the future prospective
• Nowadays there is a regulation gap towards VR trainers, training
industry expect that the authority will follow the exponential
grown of Virtual technology
• Only if Users, Operators, Providers and Authorities will collaborate
together in the same direction a virtuous cycle will be trigger to
fully exploit those new technology potential
