The release of a new Final Fantasy title is alwayssomething of a major event in the gaming calendar, andthis is no exception. On sales in the UK from March 9th,this hugely anticipated new chapter in the series marksthe first high definition evolution of the Japanese RPGphenomenon.

Square Enix's latest RPG spectacular promises "a gamingexperience that sets new standards" which takescinematic presentation and immersive audio to a wholenew level.

In true Final Fantasy style, players will get to exploreunique worlds, including the spectacular, utopianfloating city of Cocoon, and the dangerous 'lowerworld'of Pulse.

The typically rich, intertwining plot centres around thesimmering tension between the two worlds, following onfrom a war that raged some 1300 years ago. Back then,Cocoon prevailed, but ever since, the populace havelived in fear of another lowerworld invasion. Indeed, theparanoia over the danger of the lowerworld ensures thatmankind lives in an oppressive regime, where anyonewho comes into contact with Pulse is quarantined by theSanctum government's PSICOM military muscle.

The tale picks up with the lead character, Lightning,fighting back against this oppression on board amonorail train. The tone is set for another ambitiouscombat-laced adventure, and in a flurry of high kicks,bullets and slow-motion gun-fu.

Once again, the all-important combat system hasreceived an overhaul, promising a seamless transitionbetween real-time action and spectacular cinematicsequences. Dubbed the 'Active Time Battle' system, itessentially offers players an evolved blend of action andstrategy.

As the player levels up, more slots will become availableto accommodate progressively elaborate commands, orsimply more powerful, devastating blows that take upmultiple slots. It's all in the hands of the player.

Meanwhile, an all-new game mechanic allows players toassign roles to members of their party during battles,shifting between "combat paradigms." Six roles areavailable and range from Commando to Saboteur andMedic, allowing players to quickly adapt as the battle unfolds.

To add an extra layer of glamour to this blockbusterrelease, Final Fantasy XIII features a track performed bymulti-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer andsongwriter Leona Lewis. Entitled 'My Hands', the songhas been described as "a natural fit with the game’spowerful themes and strong female protagonist."
