THE FULBECK NEWSLETTER - Lincolnshire County...

Editorial - At the moment it all appears to be a mixture of “That’s great” and “Oh, I don’t like that!”. In other words, just like it always is!! It’s great that we finally have a pub to be proud of, (book early if you want to eat!!), and it is great that the village Diamond Jubilee celebrations are well in hand already, (come to the next meeting if you have any more good ideas), and it is great that the church has a new roof on the south aisle, (porch still to be done). But the downside includes things like the probable (?) closure of the Leadenham Tip. Do we really relish taking all the stuff that the bin man won’t take, to Grantham, Sleaford or Lin- coln, because that appears to be the only alternative, and now, of course the situation is perhaps aggravated by the proposal to charge for green bin emptying. See the District Councillor’s comments in this edition and lend your voice to the growing vol- ume of complaints. If we lose the Tip now, I doubt if we will ever get it back again! Late news - Really getting into the mood for Jubilee year now, I hear of a dinner to celebrate the anniversary of the Accession Proclamation, (see page 8 for details). The next Newsletter Deadline is Saturday 24th March 2012 Fulbeck Sports Club by Brian Fisher Guests and children are always made welcome and if anyone wishes to become a member at £5 per year (£2.50 for OAP's) they can obtain an application form from the club stewardess. AGM - The AGM was held on 30th November, when the Treas- urer reported a small profit over the financial year ended 31st October 2011. This was achieved by keeping a close check on our monthly income and expenditure. The club officers and com- mittee were elected and were thanked by the chairman for their commitment during the year. He also thanked David Fisher and Pete Ornsby for once again maintaining the playing Field to a very high standard. We spent £3107 on upgrading the ladies toilets, £1860 on the dressing rooms, £545 SKDC community Charge for the field and buildings, (this would still be payable if there was no Sports Club), and £419 on oil for cutting the field. We should also like to thank the Parish Council for allocating £400 from the Precept for 2012/2013 towards the upkeep of the playing field. Sampson No Flowers in Lent Church Roof - The South Aisle is now resplendent under its new terne-coated steel roof, with the porch still to be done. We are now looking at various alarm systems to find out which one will be the most effective in protecting the rest of the church roofs. That should please the insurance company! Women's World Day of Prayer - This year the Women's World Day of Prayer will be held at All Saints Church, Coleby. The theme is 'Let Justice Prevail' and is prepared by the Chris-tian Women of Malaysia. The date is Friday 2nd March. The

time of the service is not yet arranged but please look out for posters nearer the date or look in our Three Towers Church Magazine. Gentlemen are also welcome to the Service Parish Council - by the Chairman Parish Precept 2011/2012 - At the Parish Council meeting held on 12 December 2011, the Parish Precept was fixed for the year 2011/2012 at £6000 which is an increase of £900 on the current charge. At first glance this level of increase may appear high but the Precept has been held at the current level since 2007 and compared with neighbouring parishes it is quite low and is equivalent to a charge of £23.13 for a band D prop-erty. The Precept covers the Parish Council expenditure for the year and is recovered as part of the Council Tax bill. At the Annual Parish Meeting held in May there was consid-erable support from residents for the request for a contribution to be made to the maintenance of the village playing field, and £400 has been earmarked for this purpose. A contribution of £200 was also agreed towards the costs of the local Lives First Responder Group. In addition the Parish now has to pay its share of local election costs and it is necessary to budget an-nually for this eventuality. The higher level of the Precept charge will increase the annual Council Tax bill of a band D property by approximately £4. Caythorpe & District WI - by Marylyn Mason A trip to the Canadian birthplace of the WI by four members of the Institute was the subject of the January social evening. Pauline Dorey gave an impressive Power Point presentation of the British WI adventure that took in Montreal, Quebec, Ot-tawa and Toronto. Their overall impression, she said, was how big everything was in comparison to Britain. Montreal’s Nel-son’s Column was built thirty three years before the one in London. When they arrived in Quebec the Queen Mary II was in dock, dwarfing everything else around it. They saw the largest collection of totem poles in the world in the Museum of Civilisation in Ottawa and enjoyed the traditional areas of the city. A four and a half hour train journey along the shores of Lake Ontario took them to Montreal with its skyscrapers, the CN Tower and Niagara Falls. The highlight of the trip, to Stoney Creek, where Erland Lee and his wife Janet formed the very first Women’s Institute in 1897 was not helped by visitor attractions being closed on Mondays! However, the British WI members were given a very warm welcome and a delicious lunch by their Canadian counterparts. President Sue Case welcomed Angela Turner back to the fold following a major operation and remembered Marion Quayle who died suddenly before Christmas. She asked for more ideas for the design of a new WI tablecloth to commemo-rate the Institute’s 60th anniversary in 2013 and for everyone’s memories of their time with the WI for a book to celebrate the anniversary. The February meeting is the AGM and everyone was re-minded to bring a small plate of food for the finger buffet. We meet every second Thursday in the month at 7.30pm in Cay-thorpe Village Hall. Potential new members and guests are most welcome to join us.

Love from Amelie (4) and Zac (1) Morison. LIVES (Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Service) - Charity Registered no.1098364 The Caythorpe and Fulbeck First Responder LIVES group is now up and running, with half of the volunteers fully trained and we have all our equipment. This means that Responders will be on call to go to local emergencies when alerted by the Ambulance Service. The idea is that we will be able to start some treatment before the ambulance arrives, which in our rural area, can take some time. Our area also includes Frie-ston, Hough on the Hill, Brandon and Gelston. We are a char-ity, which means we will be holding fund-raising events throughout the year. We have already had a very positive re-sult from the Parish Councils and local businesses, but if any-one is prepared to help with fund-raising, or even do the train-ing to become a Responder, please contact Helen Giddings (co-ordinator) 01400279007.

Manor Stables Craft Centre . - From Sunday, I8th March to Sunday, 15th April, the Craft Centre will be host to an Art Ex-hibition by a group of Lincolnshire Artists named 'Arts Lincs’. Enquiries to (01400) 272779, Web Site www.cuttinglane.com

Car Boot Sales . - Spring is almost here so while doing your spring cleaning and sorting out the drawers and cupboards instead of throwing those unwanted items away why not have a stall at one of our Car Boot Sales? The sales will be held on the second Saturday of each month through to September, ie 12thMay, 9th June, 14th July, 11th August, and the 8th September. Members of the Over Sixties Club will be serving Tea, Coffee and biscuits from the Sports Pavilion to raise money for their club funds, and members of the Sports Club will also be sell-ing BBQ food for the Sports Club funds. Neighbourhood Watch - by Brenda Gilman It is Thursday 12th January 2012 as I sit typing the NHW messages and until just after Christmas things seem to hove been fairly quiet with very few messages, but they seem to have made up for it since, with various criminal acts taking place and mes-sages coming in blocks of 4 or 5 at a time. There have been a number of thefts from vehicles partly because people are NOT locking up their vehicles when leaving them and are also leaving valuables on show. People are even leaving their vehicles unlocked overnight only to find next morning that sat navs and other valuables have been stolen. For example, message re-ceived on 11th January of five reported incidents of items being stolen from vehicles in, Casthorpe Rd, Hurst Cres, Debdale Rd, The Drift, and Leeds Close areas of Barrowby, these incidents possibly occurred overnight of 10th January, unfortunately ALLTHE VEHICLES WERE LEFT UNLOCKED. !!!. Insurance doesn’t cover you if you have not locked your vehicle, or at home, closed all windows and locked your doors when going out, so please remember to LOCK both your vehicle and your home, and remove all valuables from sight. Messages received prior to Christmas – Overnight on 20th November 2011, a black Land Rover Defender, reg no BT52 EWK was stolen from the drive of a property in Caythorpe. Between 18/20th November 2011 a shed was broken into in Belton Lane Gt Gonerby. BT telephone exchanges and manhole sites are being targeted across the area for possible thefts of metal cabling, please report any suspicious activities near telephone exchanges or manhole sites/covers. Overnight on 18th November 2011, 2 bikes were stolen from the rear garden of a property in Readings Rd, Barrowby. Sometime between 8am and 4pm on lst De-cember a pair of aluminium ladders were stolen from the garden of a property on Hough Rd Barkston. On 10th December a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle in Allington. Then in the New Year - between 6pm and 11pm on 7th January, a vehicle parked on Gloucester Rd, Grantham was entered and a Sat Nav and lead were taken, The vehicle was NOT LOCKED at the time. Again on 7th January, a property on Thames Rd, Grantham was broken into and Lap Tops were stolen. Diesel was stolen from an excavator left in a field in the Denton Rd area of Casthorpe. Overnight of 8th January, a Sat Nav was stolen from a vehicle in Low Rd Barrowby. There have been reports of thefts of heating oil and tampering of tanks in Dry Doddington. Between 10am and 4pm there was a burglary at a property on Church St, Long Bennington. During the hours of darkness, heavy goods vehicles parked in lay bys on the Al between Stamford and Newark, are being targeted for their fuel and fuel tanks, if you notice anything suspicious please contact the Police Be-tween 10.30am and 10.45am on 10th January, a black BMW 870 was stolen from the drive of a property on Church St, Long Bennington. Between 7.20pm and 9. 40pm on 9th January, a rear passenger window of a vehicle outside Long Bennington Village Hall was smashed and during the day on Tuesday 10tth January there were two burglaries at properties on Main St, Mar-ston, and overnight on 15th January there was an attempt to steal electric cable from Marston church. At 5pm and 7.50pm on 16th January, at the A607 level crossing at Honington, stones were thrown onto the train track and a stone was thrown at a train breaking glass. Sometime between 11am and 4pm on 17thJanuary there was a theft of aluminium from a venue on Main Rd, Belton. Just to remind you that by being in a Neighbourhood Watch Area you are entitled to a discount on your household insurance, it would be wise to check this out when your renewal is due. Also a reminder of the police phone numbers, Long Bennington Po-lice Station (01400) 281852 you can always leave a message and they will get back to you, or the Police Non-emergency num-ber is 101, a new number introduced late 2011, but in an emergency always dial 999. Thank you. B Gilman, your NHW Co-ordinator

District Councillor’s Report - by Bob Sampson 01400 273873 or 07766387872 E-mail [email protected] There is very little to report since the last newsletter, ex-cept to say that I am in full support of the Parish Council that we must do all we can to resist the threatened closure of the Leadenham Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in March 2012, still the subject of a further County Council Meeting in February. This site provides a valuable service to all the villages along the Cliff Edge, the alternative in prospect is that we shall have to travel fur-ther to facilities at Grantham, Sleaford, Newark or Lincoln. Not a very practical solution to impose greater pressure on existing sites which will undoubtedly have to have more money spent on them to cope with the greater vol-ume off waste and associated visitor traffic. I also fear that closure of Leadenham would increase the incidences of anti-social fly tipping throughout our rural environment, which in the long term will cost our District Councils even more money to clear away. These points and other argu-ments I have already put in writing to the leader of the LCC, our local County Councillor, and the Chief Executive of SKDC. You also can help to oppose this closure, firstly by signing the petition at Troops Garage and secondly by e-mailing our local County Councillor ( [email protected] ), and copied to ( [email protected] ) Executive Member for Waste and Green Issues. With all the festivities now behind us, we should look forward to several events already being planned for the village later in the year and to ensuring their success. The spirit I have encountered throughout last year parallels the ethos of the “Big Society”, and though we are a small community, we pack our own punch, with people of all ages in our village and the surrounding areas participating

in a wide variety of activities. To build on this theme, may I encourage everyone to read the notice boards, speak to or-ganisers, join in and get involved. By pursuing new interests, making new friends and offering to take part we all benefit, you may surprise yourselves! This year the new Localism Act 2011 comes into being, we are led to believe that this will bring more power and deci-sion making to local communities, which means we will all have more say in how we run our neighbourhood, hopefully this will encourage more involvement. Other points of interest:- Community Lincs launches a new Countywide Bulk Oil Buying Scheme, open to all individual households, call 01529 301980,or e-mail [email protected] SKDC are to run two informal “drop in” sessions this year. These will be themed and designed to communicate and consult with residents on a wide variety of issues. For further details please refer to the notice boards. As a reminder the next District Councillor’s “Open Surgery” dates are:-

Saturday 25th February 2012 at Fulbeck Village Hall 11.30am – 2.30pm Saturday 14th April 2012 at Caythorpe Village Hall 11.30am – 2.30pm Bob Sampson Speed Limit Update The Minister for Transport, Mr Mike Penning MP, has suggested a meeting be arranged with campaigners and L.C.C. In the first instance Stephen Phillips QC MP is arranging a meeting with Councillor William Webb (Executive for Highways) to try and thrash out a few is-sues. Let's hope he succeeds! Accession Dinner - To celebrate the sixtieth an-niversary of the Proclamation of Accession to the throne of Her Majesty The Queen, Tom Bliss is or-ganising a dinner at the Hare & Hounds on Wednes-day 8th February, 7.30 for 8pm. The cost of the meal will be £25 per head. If you wish to attend, please contact Tom on 01400 279050 or email: [email protected]. Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Update - by Ann Sampson A third meeting was held on January 9th to firm up events for celebrations on June 4th 2012. The day will start at 2pm on the green outside the Hare and Hounds, with flag-raising, church bell ring-ing and the national anthem. There will then be a parade through the village, which will be decorated with bunting, and we would like as many people as possible to decorate their houses to reflect the occasion, and there will prizes awarded for the best efforts! We are hoping people will decorate floats , cars, (veteran or other-wise), bicycles etc. and dress up themselves for the parade. A "Soap Box Derby" is planned at North End after the Parade, (for details ring Dave Stevenson 01400 273224). After this all events will happen on the Playing field. The Sports Club will be open all day, and events will be as mentioned in previous newsletters, including Bouncy Castle, Archery, children's races and fancy dress." Tug of War" for adults and children, dog show, terrier racing, fete games with live music throughout the day, teas and ice creams. Ann Wood, Jean Butterfield, and Barbara Robinson have kindly offered to set up a "hobbies and crafts" exhibition in the church, which will be open all day for people to view. All contributions will be gratefully received, for details contact Ann Wood 01400 261537 In the evening BBQs will be supplied together with sausages and burgers, to be cooked by individuals themselves, salads, rolls and desserts will also be provided. Later in the evening as mentioned in a previous newsletter, we plan to light the Beacon with a toast to the Queen, dance to live music in the marquee, and have fireworks. A full programme of events will be published in the next newsletter, so that people will know at approximately what time events are happening . To enable all of this to be free for people on the day, you should all by now have received a "Donation Enve-lope" either with the Village Link or the Newsletter. We hope to raise at least £2,000 towards food and events. We hope that you will feel that you would like to contribute to what we are sure will be an enjoyable and memora-ble day for Fulbeck. On the envelope is asked how many children there are under 16yrs living in your house, and this is so we can give each child a souvenir of the day, so please complete this, while giving what you can. Cheques should be made payable to "Fulbeck Village Hall and Playing Field". Any sponsorship is also wel-come. To those who have already donated, thank you very much. All envelopes will be collected week beginning Monday 6th February. Any queries contact Julian Fane, 01400 273231, David Morison 01400 279100, Ann Sampson 01400 273873, Janette Stevenson 01400 273224 As a run up to the Diamond Jubilee, there is planned a Wine and Cheese evening in the Village Hall, Saturday May 5th, 6.30pm to 8.30pm when there will be a display of photographs from the Golden Jubilee in 2002, and some village historical photographs. Anyone who has some village memorabilia or photos, please contact any of the above persons. The next Diamond Jubilee open meeting will be on Monday 20th February 2012, 7.30pm in the Village Hall. ALL WELCOME.

Charity Page The Royal British Legion - Last November our village Poppy Appeal collection raised over £600 for the first time. Every year

our door-to-door collection raises hundreds of pounds in donations. Proud? You ought to be. This is a stag-gering sum for a community of our size and I wanted to thank those that gave as well as those in the village who turn out each year and collect for us. But where does your money go you may ask? The Royal British Legion (also known as RBL or ‘Legion’) supports many social welfare projects and helps both serving Armed Forces and ex-service families, their dependents and widows/widowers in a variety of ways. The Legion’s poppy emblem was chosen because it was famously seen growing among the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium and Northern France during WW1. It inspired the poem ‘In Flanders’ Fields’ by a Cana-dian Forces doctor, John McCrae in 1915

In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row

That mark our place: and in the sky The larks still singing, bravely fly Scarce heard amid the guns below We are the dead, short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders’ fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe, To you from failing hands we throw, The torch: Be yours to hold it high! If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow, In Flanders’ fields.

The Legion’s website www.britishlegion.org.uk details its’ services including: advice on war pensions, emergency funds for those in distress, care homes and rehabilitation centres plus home assistance through its Poppy Calls home help service. There is a Le-gion line phone number for general enquiries: 08457 725 725 The Legion provides a UK-wide Poppy Calls service. Dedicated handy-people visit to help those who are unable to carry out essential household repairs and installations. This is intended to enable people to stay independent in their own homes. To qualify for this free service a person, or a dependent or widow need only have served for 7 days in the Armed Forces. If you think you, or someone you know, may qualify for Poppy Calls help with tasks which are frustrating such as fitting a light bulb, fixing broken locks or unblocking a sink, the Poppy Calls service can help. Call them on 0800 032 0306 Fulbeck villagers have conducted a Poppy Appeal collection for many years. We are not sure when the first Poppy collection started. In 1968 Julia Fane and Brenda Gilman both started door- to- door collections and have faithfully continued every year since. Do you know when collections began and who was involved?. Every year we commemorate those from Fulbeck (and else-where) who made the ultimate sacrifice on Remembrance Sunday. After a Church service at 10.30 we assemble at the Cenotaph for the 2 minute silence just before 11am. Please feel free to join us at the Lytch Gate next year. Everyone is welcome. Once again, thank you all for such generosity. Lest we forget. David Moss Fulbeck Poppy Appeal collection organiser Lincs Ark - Can you give an abandoned animal the hope of a bett er 2012? For the thousands of abandoned cats, dogs and other small animals who are struggling to survive out in the cold winter of Lincoln-shire, their future is an uncertain one. Here at Lincs Ark (animal welfare) we are already seeing the casualties of ‘out with the old and in with the new’ and not necessarily so old now, they may have simply lost their cuteness! Right now we are inundated with so many calls on a daily basis. Some animals are being given up through no fault of their own, their owners just cannot afford to keep them, or some have been found out in the cold, having been neglected and abandoned by their owner and a kind soul has taken the animal in, in the hope that we can provide the shelter and care it needs. Sadly we cannot take in every animal, we are stretched to capacity and we have a waiting list of animals desperate to come into our charity. We would love to be able to offer them all the warmth, food, love and shelter they so desperately need and deserve. For those that do come into our care, they will go to a foster carer until a forever home can be found for them. In the meantime, they will be checked out at the vets and given any treatment necessary, including neutering if needed, vaccinations, worming and flea treatment. Harry was one of those cats. He was found cold, frightened and emaciated in the bottom of a ditch by a lady walking her dog. He would not have survived the winter, he was so thin. Yet this cat came up to his rescuer and was so trusting or perhaps he had no energy left to fight. He was taken to the local vet immediately, where he was checked over and also to see if he was micro-chipped (he was not) and then straight into foster care. He was so lethargic to begin with and would just lay in his bed all day, not even interested in playing! With love, food and warmth given to this gorgeous boy, he slowly put on weight, his coat became shiny and he started to play. It was slow progress, but to see him blossom into good health was all that we could ask for. And what of Harry now? Well, he does have that final happy ending and he has found his forever home with a wonderful family that adore him. Our job is done for Harry, but sadly there’s always another one waiting! Can you help us save others like Harry and become a friend of Lincs Ark for just £1 a week Please consider becoming a loyal supporter of Lincs Ark (animal welfare), we cannot do this work without your help. By giving just £1 a week, your tax deductible donation will help us continue to give the love and care that an abandoned and neglected animal deserves. Please help us make a difference in 2012. You can donate by going onto our website www.lincsark.co.uk and clicking on the Charity Giving Link; or set up a direct debit or send a cheque to – Lincs Ark (animal welfare), PO Box 155, Boston, Lincs PE21 9ZA or call 07880 716 121 for more information. Thank you from all at Lincs Ark (animal welfare).
