• TheIndianstooksettlerscaptiveasameanstoreplacefamilymemberslostinconflictsandscarecolonistsfromtheirland. CaptiveswerereleasedaspartoftheTreatyofEaston,butsomeactuallychosetostaywiththeirnewIndianfamilies.

• ThecartoonappearedalongwithFranklin'seditorialaboutthe"disunitedstate"ofthecolonies,andhelpedmakehispointabouttheimportanceofcolonialunity.
• Duringthatera,therewasasuperstitionthatasnakewhichhadbeencutintopieceswouldcomebacktolifeifthepieceswereputtogetherbeforesunset.
• WhileoriginallythecartoonservedasawarningofwhatwouldhappenifthecoloniesdidnotuniteagainsttheFrenchthreat,iteventuallybecameasymboloffreedomanddemocracyduringtheAmericanRevolution.

– Englishleadersalsobelievedthatcolonistsshouldhelppaydownthewardebt,sincetheyhadbenefitedfromBritain’sprotectionthroughout
– ManyEnglishleadersfurtherbelievedthecoloniesweredisorganized,andthattheyshouldbegovernedbythoseinBritain,withthecentralauthorityinLondon.
– Whensuchleadershipplansweresetinmotion,colonialresentmentofBritaingrew.Colonistsfelttheyshouldbeabletogovernthemselves,ratherthanbetoldwhattodofromacrosstheocean.

andIndianWar,theBritishvictorywasdisastrous.– Nativescontinuedlosingthelandthattheyhadcalledhomelong
beforethearrivalofanycolonist.– ThosetribesthathadalliedthemselveswiththeFrenchwere
hatedbytheEnglish.– TheIroquoisConfederacy,whichhadalliedthemselveswith
Britain,faredonlyslightlybetter.– ThealliancequicklyunraveledandtheConfederacybeganto
crumblefromwithin.TheIroquoiscontinuedtocontesttheEnglishforcontroloftheOhioValleyforanotherfiftyyears;buttheywereneveragaininapositiontodealwiththeirwhiterivalsontermsofmilitaryorpoliticalequality.
