St. Francis Parish Priest’s Page Called to Serve II
God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called. Every Baptized person is called to serve; You are cho-sen to bring the gospel of Christ that gives hope and salvation for all. When it comes to our calling, it is not your ability that matters, but availability. On the 21st we celebrated the feast of St. Mathew, one of the twelve apostles. He was a tax collector and was known as Levi. Here, he is called Matthew, which means gift of God or given by God. It is important to know that, during Jesus’ time, the society considered the tax collectors as outcasts and sinners. But to Jesus they were God’s children with immense potential. Therefore, He chose Matthew to be his apostle. Matthew leaves his table, his profession, his everything and follows Jesus. Jesus in contradiction to the Rabbi, who rejected publicans and tax collectors, calls Matthew, the tax collector who is considered an outcast. This is the new revolutionary step Jesus takes to build the new family of God. It was Jesus’ way of looking, that led to the transformation and the response of Matthew to the call. In Matthew, Jesus was able to see a potential disciple. Matthew was very successful in life, but realizing his call, left everything to follow Jesus. Like Mathew many of us have some special moments when we become aware of our vocation or a call to change. These are rare and outside the ordinary. God is calling us every day by name. We are challenged to a daily listening of that call. This requires an active listening. Each of us have our own talents. We are called to recognize and use these talents. We are not expected to do everything. Christ wants to bring diverse peoples together. Each person is given a particular gift and a position, and we need to come together to form one community with Christ as our head. The Gospel shows an example of this diversity becoming unity. Matthew was a tax collector. He was not a good man, but Jesus recognized the talents that were present in Matthew that others were not able to discern. Jesus calls him into a new kind of family, one united in the Grace of God’s own Spirit, united in companionship with Jesus in service to the Father. A family that will need and honor His gifts, diverse though they may be.
Thank You!
Recently I did a graveside service for Richard Nieto, who served our country for 21 years. This family is blessed with three generations that keep serving the US Navy. While hanging out with the family after the service, they introduced me to a four-year-old boy, who is going to be the fourth generation in ser-vice! On behalf of Saint Francis Parish Family, I let them know how much we appreciate them and said Thank You for serving our country. We gratefully remember all our men and women in uniform, police, fire fighters, and volunteers who work so hard to reach out to others in need. We also pray that our troops serving overseas come home safe!
Thanks to Bishop Joseph Brennan who celebrated Mass with us on Sunday and for your surprise visit on Monday, to say hello to our staff.

The Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos is a tradition that is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin countries as well as in many communities here in the United States. Here at St. Francis of Assisi Parish we celebrate All Souls Day, a com-memoration of all our faithful departed. It has
been said that we really never stop grieving our friends and family, we just learn how to breathe
again and live with the loss. For many years now it has become a St. Francis parish tradition to celebrate our “All Souls Scroll Mass”. A scroll is written containing all the names of people in the parish who have died in the past year. That
scroll is unfurled during the mass and blessed. The mass is not just another funer-
al...more a time of remembering, a time of hon-oring those we loved. This year please mark your calendars for Monday, November 2nd at
6:00 PM for our special scroll mass. Due to cir-cumstances of Covid 19 and the Governor’s mandate this year’s mass will be outside the
church in the West parking lot (along H Street).
Our funeral team wishes to accompany those who are grieving and to show the light of Jesus Christ risen to those whose hearts are broken. Our Parish embraces all who are mourning and gives direction for funeral services. We give thanks to God for the deceased's life and hold family and friends close in prayer as we travel together through these
difficult times. Once again we find ourselves unable to hold funeral Masses in the church at this time, however we are now able to hold funeral masses outside of the church, much the same as our daily morning mass. Funeral masses can be held at 8:00,
8:30, or 9:00 in the morning, this helps us to beat the heat. We will also continue to provide graveside services,
chapel services, and schedule memorial masses for a future time as allowed. For any questions please contact Roylene
