UPDATED CORONAVIRUS ALERT -

MASS IS CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICEOn March 16, Bishop Burbidge announced via a video

message that un�l further no�ce, all public celebra�ons

of the Mass are canceled throughout the Diocese. Bish-

op Burbidge has asked pastors to keep churches open to

the public, so that those who choose to pray, are wel-

come to do so in the presence of our Eucharis�c Lord,

while keeping a safe distance from one another and not

exceeding the 10-person limit. Our church will be open

daily from 11 am-2 pm and again from 5 pm - 8 pm for

personal prayer. Parishioners are asked to enter through

the front doors only and sign in and out on the prayer

register in the back of the church.

With public celebra�ons of the Sunday Mass canceled,

the faithful are encouraged to devote �me to prayer,

observe Mass on television or the Internet, and pray the

Rosary along with other devo�ons. The Diocese co-

sponsors a televised Sunday Mass with the Archdiocese

of Washington. It takes place at the Basilica Shrine of the

Immaculate Concep�on in Washington and is available

at 10:30am on Sundays on two local TV sta�ons as well

as online. Go to ArlingtonDiocese.org/TVMass for more

informa�on or to view the Mass. In addi�on to the TV

Mass we are planning on having a video recorded at

OLQP of daily and Sunday Mass that will be available on

our Facebook page beginning soon with Fr. Tim, Fr. Mar-

�n, and Fr. Joe presiding at different masses. All non-

liturgical ac�vi�es in the parish except the food pantry

are also canceled. For informa�on about weddings, bap-

�sms, or funerals, please call the parish office.

EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALSEaster Sunday Mass will be live streamed, if public Masses are

s�ll suspended. The sanctuary will be decorated as usual, and

therefore, we invite you to remember a deceased family

member with an Easter Flower Memorial, to be published in

the Easter Sunday bulle�n.

Please let us know by Monday, April 6, who you would like to

remember. You can do that by prin�ng this form and mailing it

to the parish office, or by emailing the informa�on to Chris�na

ALERTA DE CORONAVIRUS ACTUALIZADA -LA MASA SE CANCELA HASTA AVISO ADICIONAL

El 16 de marzo, Monseñor Burbidge anunció a través de un mensaje de video que hasta nuevo aviso, todas las celebraciones públicas de la Misa se cancelan en toda la Diócesis. Monseñor Burbidge ha pedido a los pastores que mantengan las iglesias abiertas al público, para que aquellos que elijan orar, sean bienvenidos en presencia de nuestro Señor Eucarís�co, manteniendo una distan-cia segura el uno del otro y sin exceder el límite de 10 personas. JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… This Sunday’s Gospel tells the

story of the man born blind…familiar enough to most of us. But have we heard it so o�en that we miss the underlying themes, the story between the lines of the text? We could focus on the miracle of “new sight” in the physical sense but could go deeper and explore Jesus’ insistence that sin has nothing to do with physical sickness, disability or human tragedy…and in fact, that it is in the midst of tragedy and human suffering that God is present. In the very midst of this global human tragedy of the coronavirus pan-demic God is present with us! Jesus’ words and ac�ons help us to see what the blind man saw…the presence of the Living God! And in that presence we can find HOPE! It is easy enough to just “see” the physical blindness of the man in the Gospel and “lose sight” of the spiritual darkness of his parents who, because of fear, fail to speak the truth on their son’s behalf. Fear of speaking out and

failure to stand up for truth and jus�ce makes us blind and keeps us in spiritual darkness, as individuals and as a na�on. In the midst of wars, famine, the pandemic and interna�onal and na�onal crises for refugees and immigrants, we are called to be a people who look, and see, who do not turn away from the suffering of our sisters and brothers especially now in this �me of such uncertainty and fear. When I look at the world around me, at all the suffering, can I see God’s presence too? Am I called to be there to be used by God like the “man born blind” to show forth God’s glory in the midst of a suffering world? When have I felt God’s presence in the midst of worry and suffering of the coronavirus outbreak? Do I have “blind spots” in my life where I need to ask Jesus for sight, so I may see more clearly my sisters and brothers, as God sees them?Lenten Blessings,Fr. Tim

March 22 is World Water Day, a �me to pause, consider the impact of clean water, and to support clean water programs like the

one in our sister parish in Medor, Hai�. 750 million people in the world do not have access to safe water, that's 1 in 10.More people die from unsafe water than in all forms of violence, including war. Lost �me gathering water significantly reduces produc�ve farming for women in developing countries. It is es�mated that with safe water available, women could feed 150 million of the world's hungry and that for every $1 invested in clean water and sanita�on, a yield of $5-28 is returned in increased economic ac�vity and re-duced health risks.

HAITI EASTER DRIVE - “Water is a cure-all. Water is everything.

You can’t get be�er without drinking lots of water, and you can’t drink water unless it’s clean.” -Josh Fox. We have access to clean water with the turn of a faucet. We rely on it to drink, cook, clean, wash clothes, brush our teeth, and much more. For the people in Medor, life is much different. There is no running water, so they collect water from streams and springs and must purify it at home for it to be safe to consume. Medor residents use these same streams and springs to bathe themselves and wash their clothes. This week, let’s try to limit our water usage to only what is abso-lutely essen�al. While doing so let’s remember our brothers and sisters in Medor and their quest for clean water. Dona�ons for the Hai� Easter Drive help support Medor’s clean water program; dona�ons help improve the health of the en�re community.

In the previous ar�cles, we learned how the environment is adversely affected by global meat produc�on. We introduced the Lenten

Challenge to encourage you to reduce household meat consump�on as a way to care for crea�on. In this ar�cle we will focus on

the impact of food waste and how to reduce it.

During Lent the Church invites us to rekindle our commitment to be dedicated disciples of Jesus. Upon reflec�on we

discover that the tradi�onal Lenten prac�ces of fas�ng and abs�nence can be applied to environmental conserva�on

by reducing food waste, a major threat to the environment and to our ability to feed the world’s hungry. One third of

all food produced globally goes to waste. And just one fourth of that wasted food could feed some 800 million nutri-

�onally needy people. As Pope Francis said, "Whenever food is thrown out, it is if it were stolen from the table of the

poor." 

ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DEPT OF AGRICULTURE: While food waste occurs throughout the stages of produc�on, processing and retailing,

U.S. consumers are responsible for 40 percent of it.

This waste amounts to about a pound a day per consumer or 165 billion pounds every

year from U.S. households.

When we dispose food in a landfill it rots and becomes a significant source of methane –

a potent greenhouse gas with 21 �mes the global warming poten�al of carbon dioxide.

WHAT WE CAN DO

First and foremost, purchase and prepare food with an eye on not le�ng anything go to waste. This is responsible

fas�ng.

Put more emphasis on selec�ng frozen foods, which are considered nutri�onally good and not subject to spoiling.

Besides, less food goes to waste when it’s shipped frozen since it’s not as perishable on the journey from the farm

to your refrigerator. This is a good form of abs�nence, along with cu�ng back on meat, the produc�on of which

harms the environment.

Know the difference between ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates. Foods with ‘use by’ dates are highly perishable and

should be consumed by that date. Foods with ‘best before’ dates can be consumed a�er the date on the packaging,

although they may not be at their best quality.

Don’t skip over less desirable looking food, which can be perfectly nutri�ous. Half of all produce is thrown away in

the U.S. because it is una�rac�ve.

Everything I Learned About Being a Good Neighbor During a Crisis

I Learned from My Neighbor When I Was in Crisis

Many Americans are already socially

isolated, and the physical distancing

that we need to do as a society to pre-

vent the spread of coronavirus will ex-

acerbate loneliness, anxiety and des-

pair. In the last 48 hours, I have read a

bunch of important pieces about the

importance of mutual aid, social soli-

darity, and social connectedness.

And as I was brainstorming what we as

community members, as nonprofit

leaders, and as a society ought to do to

take care of each other during this cri-

sis, what came to mind for me immedi-

ately is what I needed during a personal

crisis.

First, a li�le context. From about 2010

to 2016, as ioby grew and my job be-

came more na�onal, I spent more of my

life in everyone else’s neighborhood

instead of my own. I became what I

thought was more self-reliant, but what

was actually socially disconnected. I

came to rely on apps for everything that

used to just be called favors. A ride

home from the airport? I no longer

called friends; I used Ly�. Pick up some-

thing last minute at the store for me?

Nah, I’ll just use Amazon Prime. Walk

my dog? A dog-walking service. Help

me put together some IKEA furniture?

Taskrabbit. Instead of asking for some-

one to water my plants while I’m out of

town, I even built a self-watering irriga-

�on system for my fire escape kale. I

convinced myself that I had op�mized

my life because I didn’t depend on any-

one else.

In 2016, just three months a�er I

moved into a new apartment building,

my dad was hospitalized a�er having a

seizure and quickly diagnosed with a

fast-growing brain cancer. He had sur-

gery to remove the cancer two days

before the 2016 elec�on. He died three

weeks a�er Inaugura�on Day in 2017.

It was 106 days of hell — my family was

gripped with fear, anxiety, boredom,

sadness, uncertainty. During that �me, I

traveled back and forth between NYC

and Washington DC between work and

family. I was on my own, scared and

trying to do the next best thing.

Just before this began, I met my down-

stairs neighbor, Hadrien. One day, my

dog was barking at the front door but

no one had knocked. I opened the door

and Hadrien was standing there with

my mail in his hand. He had been walk-

ing my mail to my doorstep for the first

four months that I lived in the building

because my landlord hadn’t given me a

key to the building’s shared mailbox.

Hadrien invited me to dinner at his

apartment with his roommate and the

flatmates in between our floors. We all

started to spend �me together for Sun-

day night dinners, watching movies, or

just hanging out on the terrace togeth-

er.

When my dad was first hospitalized, I

rushed home to pack and le� quickly

for Penn Sta�on, quickly tex�ng the

neighbors to let them know I’d be gone

for awhile.

Hadrien immediately texted back —

Don’t worry, I’ll water your plants.

A few weeks later, I was trying to bal-

ance work and family plans for the holi-

days as my dad started chemo and radi-

a�on. I was a mess.

And Hadrien simply offered — I’ll take

care of your dog.

I repeatedly came back to Brooklyn

completely depleted, emo�onally ex-

hausted, and on the doormat in front of

my apartment I would find a li�le note

from Hadrien, just checking in.

When I came home from the funeral, I

found on my doormat a box of choco-

lates, and Hadrien’s riff on the Forrest

Gump quote: Some�mes life just gives

you shit, not at all like the surprise goo-

ey deliciousness inside a chocolate.

Right now, every single person in New

York City, perhaps in the en�re country,

is having their own personal crisis, try-

ing to balance work and family, filled

with fear, anxiety, boredom, sadness,

uncertainty.

It’s important for us all to remember

how calming it can be to have someone

nearby looking out for you.

The ar�st Mona Chalabi made this

beau�ful reminder for us about who is

most vulnerable: people with chronic

diseases, older folks, freelancers, health

workers, people who are undocument-

ed. [See artwork on next page, #11.]

I’m worried about my mom, who is over

55, by herself in Virginia. But I’m

soothed to know that her neighbors to

the right and le� of her are checking in

with her every day, and they’re all look-

ing out for one another. I know her

neighbors’ names, and I have their

phone numbers and email addresses.

This makes me feel so much be�er

about her wellbeing.

So, I realized, if I’m pu�ng this much

faith in my mom’s neighbors, whose

parents do I need to be taking care of? I

mentally ran through all the neighbors

on my block, and tried to visualize who

is older and lives alone. I dropped off a

note introducing myself, giving my ad-

dress, email address and phone num-

ber, and offering to pick up groceries,

meals, or prescrip�ons for the elders on

my block. It took less than five minutes,

and now we have a stronger social

bond.

While public spaces are empty, what

can we do to keep physical distance

without social distance? I plan to drop

off li�le notes and treats for the elders

on my block now and again over the

next few weeks. I also know that I’m

s�ll pulling a regular paycheck, and I’m

saving money by not ea�ng at restau-

rants, not paying for my metro fares.

Inspired by Sarah Goodyear, I’m brain-

storming ways that I can take what I’m

saving every day and redistribute it to

families and local small businesses that

are losing money as a result of physical

distancing.

adrienne maree brown taught us “What

you give a�en�on to grows,” so here

are some more ideas to make sure we

give a�en�on to social connec�vity

even during physical distance:

Italy taught us that we can sing

together.

We can string up twinkle lights and

put candles in our windows.

We can chalk the sidewalks with

messages of love and kindness.

We can plant flowers.

We can buy gi� cer�ficates at our

favorite restaurants to be re-

deemed later.

We can have book club mee�ngs by

video conference.

We can make designs in our win-

dows to send messages to those

across the street.

We can FaceTime our nieces, neph-

ews and niblings far away to give

their parents a break.

We can create hyperlocal childcare

circles in places where kids are out

of school (an app called Wiggle

Room can help with this).

We can prepare care packages for

people we know and people we

don’t know.

For those of you who don’t know me

well, I ended up marrying my neighbor

Hadrien, which makes me believe that

there’s almost no difference between

love and being a good neighbor. If all of

us commit to taking care of the one or

two most vulnerable people in our

neighborhoods, perhaps we can each

be the building blocks of na�onwide

network community care. Dr. Cornell

West says it be�er: “Jus�ce is what love

looks like in public.”
