Gilgamesh Laments Friend’s Death

Editor’s Note 2 (10 points) We need a “Did you know” section to spice up the page. Write two sentences comparing

the Sumerian Afterlife with that of the Greek view. Be sure to use Transitional Words between the sentences.

Editor’s Note 3 (10 points) Our readers really want an active and exciting type writing. Alas, our last writer used way too may “be”

Verbs. Please identify them by Highlighting or underlining them.

Editor’s Note 4 (10 points) You know, I think what would really work is if you offer some fixes.

Pick five sentences to “fix” and place them in the “Your fixes” column.

Your fixes1)The wild man is dead.

Fix 1) The wild man has become deceased.

2) After an adventurous life of being raised by wolves, finding true love, wrestling with a king to defend the honor of a new bride, the wild man succumbed to a fateful dream and breathed his last.

Fix 2) After an adventurous life, having been raised by wolves, finding true love, wrestling with a king to defend the honor of a new bride, the wild man succumbed to a fateful dream and breathed his last.

3) The King, party boy that he was, seemed changed in that he no longer sought out hedonistic pleasures, but began a quest that we will all one day take, the quest for purpose and meaning, for longevity and legacy.

Fix 3) The King, how he enjoyed going to parties, seemed changed in that he no longer sought out hedonistic pleasures, but began a quest that we will all one day take, the quest for purpose and meaning, for longevity and legacy.

1. The wild man is dead. 2. After an adventurous life of being raised by wolves, finding true love, wrestling with a king to defend the honor of a new bride, the wild man succumbed to a fateful dream and breathed his last. 3. The King, party boy that he was, seemed changed in that he no longer sought out hedonistic pleasures, but began a quest that we will all one day take, the quest for purpose and meaning, for longevity and legacy. 4. Thus, Gilgamesh became what we might call a dynamic character. 5. Let’s give the king props for having a Greek moment of recognition and becoming a better man. 6.The lamentation started by Gilgamesh, a demi-God in his own right, walked through a mountain. 7. Then, due to a Godly denial of his request for eternal life, Gilgamesh traveled to the flood survivor to have a one on one chat. 8. Learning of what became of the human race, Gilgamesh moved on after obtaining some important information about a flower. 9. Being strong and determined, Gilgamesh managed to locate the flower of eternal youth, but lost it to a sea serpent. 10. Finally, the King gave up, returned home, lived out his life, and died.

Did U Know

The Sumerians thought that when you after you die, you are in a dark place and essentially, you eat dust for all of eternity. However, Greeks thought that after you died, you either go to a place of torture, and horrible things, or you go to the same place, just with a happier eternity, e.g. no torture.

Blind Prophet Right

Strophe / AntistropheStrophe (15 points)

Oedipus Rex made shame fall upon Thebes because of his own actions and mistakes. He claimed that whoever had killed the king before he was king, would receive the most demeaning means of discipline (Execution or Banning). He then proceeded in a court case, in which he accused the citizens or well known characters with the murder. The main person he accused was the blind prophet. After the court case, he realized that he was the murderer, and then gouged out his eyes and left the city.

Anti-Strophe (15 points)

Oedipus Rex did not cause shame to come and plague to fall upon Thebes because at the time, he didn’t know what he was doing. He more brought self-shame because he realized that he actually ended up doing what the Oracle said, and what he never wanted to happen (marry his mother, and kill his father). This wouldn’t bring shame to the whole city/country. Only himself, and his mother.

WORKING TITLE:

OPTION ALPHA “King Oedipus Bids Farewell” OR OPTION OMEGA “Internal Affairs Takes on New Meaning”

Editor’s Note 5: Using the two small articles to the right, create a

point (support for) and a counterpoint (argument against) the

following statement.

“Oedipus Rex brought shame to Thebes and its citizens.”

Be sure to use strong arguments in both pieces, including literary

referencing and not mix points. Treat each piece as individual

articles. One-Three Paragraphs (50-100 words each)

(Name) Writes Exemplar Essay!

Answers Question in Beautiful Essay Form and… Uses 5 Vocabulary words correctly (10 points)!

In an incredible celebration on the streets of Hampton Roads, star reporter Austin Beavers gathers his/her fan base to share the winning of the Pulitzer Prize for this year’s Best in Essay Writing Category. The topic was daring, and the writing followed all the proper formatting of good essay writing.

Said one stunned fan, who managed to squeeze through the huge midnight crowd to catch a glimpse of the newest member of the Pulitzer winners. “I was so excited to be able to be in the same area as him/her. I mean who else could so eloquently support body paragraphs with literary referencing, offering opinion which is never unverified, but also backed up by the contents of the literature (10 points)”

Another fan – who cathartically choked up on tears during the interview – was impressed with the outstanding hook that not only attracted the reader to delve into the writing, but also managed to maintain a delicate balance of transitions (10 points).

A third bystander, one who camped out on the grounds immediately upon hearing that the famed writer may make a public appearance, respectfully disagreed with the two other fans. “I can appreciate these items, but the genius is in the conclusion, which is not only broad and didactic, but analyzes as well as summarizes. It shows – in one paragraph, mind you – the significance of all the paragraphs that come before it (10 points). Who could not just want to live life just a little bit stronger after reading such beautiful words?”

When considering the concept of hero, select a character studied thus far in all our readings that represents a hero, one that represents the antithesis of a hero, and one that represents a dynamic character who possesses both heroic and un-heroic attributes. Why is it important to have all three types present in literature?

Heroes have been studied and looked up to by people all over the world, but a lot of people tend to neglect the fact that there are different types of heroes, such as ones that have truly heroic, and only heroic characteristics, one that represents the antithesis of a hero, and one that represents a dynamic character who possesses both heroic and not so heroic attributes.

A good example of a character with both heroic and not so heroic attributes would be Oedipus Rex. He had a lot of good characteristics, but also some bad ones. For example, he was very trustworthy, being true to his word, because when he said that the murderer of the king would receive a terrible punishment, and when he found out it was him, that punishment was carried out. He did not any anyway rebuke to the punishment, or rouse the people on how terrible the punishment was. Before the punishment was delivered, he was being very bravado, or showing a lot of courage.

Next, an example of a character that represents a true hero would be Sundiata. He not only walked for the first time, but returned honor to his mother by showing up the queen’s son by taking a whole tree, and not just the leaves. The reason I say that he shows the attribute of a true hero is because he did not in anyway do anything wrong to get him that point, he more than less, didn’t do anything which isn’t a good thing or a bad thing.

In conclusion, heroes have a lot of different varieties about them, they can have all the characteristics of a hero, but might do something wrong, or in Sundiata’s case, they might just have not done anything, which would make them not wrong.

5 Words: Ancur (TABOO, SIMPLETON, LAMENTATION, TAUT, CORPULENT), Faver (TACIT, INTERMINABLE, INDIGNANT, REVERENCE, CLAMOR), Havman (EFFIGY, DECORUM, DIFFIDENTLY, INSCRUTABLE, BRAVADO), Ibvil (INDIGNANT, IMPERVIOUS, DECORUM, DIFFIDENTLY, VICISSITUDES),

Jofar (MIMICRY, HINDERING, ILLUSIVE, MALEVOLENTLY, REBUIKE), Lotow (BELLIGERANCE, DREDGED, TRUCULENT, REBUKE, ROUSE), Myath (TALISMAN, SIMPLETON, TABOO, SUPERFICIAL, LUMINOUS)

Origin: 1625–35 / Usage note: Errata is originally the plural of the singular Latin noun erratum. WWCC Sports Round UP

Sweden progressed to the gold medal game after winning the 1v2 Page Play-off.

After blanking the first end, Sweden opened the scoring with a hit to score two points in the second end. The teams then swapped singles all the way to the seventh end. In the eighth end, with Sweden leading by 4-3, Muirhead drew nicely onto the button with her second stone and, in trying to winkle it out, Sweden's fourth player Maria Prytz wrecked on a front guard, giving Scotland a steal of two and

the lead for the first time in the game, at 5-4.

Sweden blanked the ninth end to retain last stone advantage in the tenth. The Scots seemed to have that end under control until Muirhead had a pick-up with her first stone, which gave Sweden a chance.

Even at that, Muirhead played a near-perfect freeze with her last, but Prytz was able to tap it out, as Sweden scored three for their win.

After the game Swedish skip and lead player Margaretha Sigfridsson, said, "that was a fantastic game and it feels so good to win. It was only the eighth end that was not so good from our side. It was so

close, we touched so many guards in that end and Eve got to steal two. But we thought we still had a good chance to win the game and we thought it was so our game."
