The 13 Providers That Matter Most and How They stack up

agile specialists accelerate Development of Differentiating software

aD&D leaders are increasingly turning to agile development specialists — either independent fi rms or agile practices within larger fi rms — to get development resources, knowledge, and skills beyond what they can hire and retain in house.1 savvy aD&D leaders know that agile service providers are better than the traditional offshore software factories at helping their clients create the great software they need to differentiate their products, improve their customers’ experience, and digitize their operations.2 The best become their clients’ strategic partners by:

› Providing high-quality, reasonably priced development staff on short notice. specialist fi rms can recruit and retain designers, developers, and testers in the lower-cost cities where they operate. These vendors help clients that want to accelerate development ramp up much more quickly than they could by trying to hire local talent themselves, especially in areas where that talent is in short supply. They can either provide complete teams or augment internal teams with specialist knowledge or skills. an engineering leader at an iconic technology company told us that he used Grid Dynamics because he needed to scale quickly to address new initiatives, “We don’t need to interview new people because we trust Grid to assign the right type of talent.”

› contributing fresh ideas, external perspectives, and technology knowledge. The best agile service providers excel in co-creation, helping clients apply the latest technology to solve their, and their customers’, challenges. They understand techniques such as design thinking. They know when to push back against ill-thought-out requirements and unclear user stories. They help less-advanced clients learn from leaders in other industries. one reference customer said of its partner, 3Pillar Global, “They bring more than mere resources. They integrate with the team and participate in brainstorming and ideation.”

› Accelerating clients’ adoption of Agile development tools and techniques. agile service providers deliver more than software; they also let internal teams learn new ways of working by watching and doing, not merely by sitting in classes. They help dev leaders and their teams learn about agile concepts such as scrums, story points, and spotify guilds.3 They also implement, use, and then leave behind a range of vital enabling tools such as test automation and Devops release platforms. a solutions architect said that with his partner, insight, “The conversation was about agile from Day one.” a global food producer’s agile capability leader told us that his partner Mindtree “enabled us to learn agile as part of the assignment.”

They bring more than mere resources. They integrate with the team and participate in brainstorming and ideation.

The 13 Providers That Matter Most And How They Stack Up

evaluation summary

The forrester Wave™ evaluation highlights Leaders, strong Performers, contenders, and challengers. it’s an assessment of the top vendors in the market and does not represent the entire vendor landscape. you’ll find more information about this market in our report on best practices for agile co-creation and our broader overview of the agile service provider market.

We intend this evaluation to be a starting point only. Different aD&D leaders have differing needs. We have targeted our scores and criteria weights at a company that wants a partner to help it implement agile development tools and techniques while developing truly innovative, differentiating software. not everyone wants both. your choice of vendor will depend on your current agile maturity and how much development you intend to outsource, as well as on the relative priorities of innovation, transformation, and cost. We encourage clients to view the detailed vendor evaluations and adapt criteria weightings to their own priorities using the excel-based vendor comparison tool (see figure 1 and see figure 2).

The 13 Providers That Matter Most And How They Stack Up

vendor Profiles

our analysis uncovered the following strengths and weaknesses of individual vendors.

Leaders

› Brillio is a leader in Agile development and transformation. it supports a full range of engagement models from remote to onsite, with one-third of its staff in north america and the remainder in india. Brillio’s relevance cycle is a formal process for product creation, from ideation through prototyping and minimum viable product (MvP) release to continuous improvement.

Brillio has more robust processes than most of its rivals for both helping clients implement agile and scale it across their development function. it deploys a portfolio of tools to deliver a continual release process, including built-in analytics tools to increase velocity and efficiency. it boasts an impressive list of co-innovation case studies, including customer engagement software for realtor.com and yokohama rubber, although some customer references complained about inconsistent code quality. it is a particularly good choice for firms of low-to-medium agile maturity that want to transform quickly while simultaneously getting great software.

› Grid Dynamics excels at co-creation, providing consistently excellent developers. it focuses on software innovation, primarily on open source, cloud-native platforms. it has about 1,000 developers, of whom 20% are in north america and 80% in its various central and eastern european locations, including Belgrade, serbia; Kraków, Poland; Kharkiv, ukraine; and st. Petersburg, russia.

Grid Dynamics takes great care to recruit the best local talent, targeting the top 10% in each of its locations. customer references confirm that this results in superior quality, albeit at a slightly higher price than vendors that operate from some other offshore locations. They also praised the Grid Dynamics staff’s willingness to proactively suggest new ideas, push back on unclear requirements, and go the extra mile on behalf of clients. Grid Dynamics is slightly weaker than its peers in agile knowledge transfer. it is one of the best choices for aD&D leaders who want to augment existing agile teams but are struggling to recruit locally — and who are willing to pay a premium for high-quality people.

› ePAM Systems is a leading provider of innovative, differentiating software. it is the largest agile vendor in this evaluation, with more than 25,000 developers, of whom 70% are in Belarus, russia, or ukraine.4 its client list includes many leading brands across multiple industries.

ePaM systems has the best portfolio of co-innovation case studies among the vendors in this evaluation. The vendor’s size allows it to have experience with a broad range of new technologies, including augmented reality, voice control, and photo-scanning algorithms. its range of long-term, multi-team client relationships is evidence of its co-innovation culture and processes — and of its ability to help large enterprises build differentiating software. However, some smaller clients

The 13 Providers That Matter Most And How They Stack Up

complained that they didn’t get the level of attention on their success that they needed. ePaM systems is therefore a great choice for enterprises that want a vendor to provide or augment multiple product teams, but it may not be the best fit for narrower programs.

› NIIT Technologies accelerates clients’ Agile transformations. it is a fast-growing agile specialist, with more than 3,000 developers, 90% of whom are based in india. it focuses on three verticals: travel and transportation, banking, and insurance.

niiT Technologies’ “Done release at Will” is a robust framework for improving client’s software development capabilities; it has a strong focus on modern, cloud-native solution architecture — and on tools to automate each stage of the software life cycle. it has several good case studies that combine migration of legacy architectures to microservices resulting in measurable improvements to customer-facing software. The reliance on india-based developers will be a negative for some companies, particularly north american ones, as the difference in time zones could hamper agile collaboration. niiT Technologies is a good choice for aD&D leaders in its target industries, whether they are new to agile or experienced with it.

› exadel provides high-quality developers to augment existing Agile teams. it delivers a wide range of custom software development services, with nearly 1,000 developers across multiple offices in central and eastern europe — and another 50-plus in the us. customers include Hewlett Packard enterprise, McKesson, and Deloitte.

customer references praised exadel’s people, not only for their consistently high quality and productivity but also for their willingness to proactively contribute to co-innovation. one reference told us “their software performs better and is easier to manage.” exadel has differentiated, proprietary solutions — its appery.io mobile app platform and innovation Lab, for example — and uses them to accelerate its own development and help clients implement Devops. However, there is less evidence than some of its competitors of agile transformation and knowledge transfer. exadel is a strong choice for aD&D leaders who need to accelerate their firm’s product development and want a partner at the lower end of the midsize range.

Strong Performers

› 3Pillar Global excels at software co-creation, typically on its clients’ platforms. it has approximately 900 developers, split 70-30 between eastern europe and india. it works mainly with companies in content, data, and information-rich industries, including Tv and publishing.

3Pillar Global applies an exceptionally product-centric approach to software development, focusing on business outcomes, differentiation, and continual evolution. customer references praised its developers’ high quality and productivity, as well as their proactive participation in co-creation. one told us, “We have not found another firm that can match 3Pillar Global’s approach to building software.” one concern is a lack of bench strength; customer references said they wished 3Pillar Global could ramp teams up faster, on less notice. The vendor usually works with clients’ existing

infrastructure, so it may not be the right choice for someone who wants help implementing an agile development platform. The ideal fit for 3Pillar Global is an aD&D leader who wants to implement a more product-centric approach to software development and is willing to pay a bit extra for high-quality resources.

› Ness Digital engineering helps clients implement modern software architectures. it has over 3,000 developers across europe, north america, and asia. it grew up working for software vendors but now works across a wide range of industries.

ness Digital engineering has a solid framework for driving agile transformation, including its own maturity assessment framework. it also deploys some proprietary tools, such as the ness Q automated testing accelerator. it has a good focus on solid engineering and on delivering modern software architectures, but it provided less evidence than others in this evaluation of co-creation or truly innovative differentiating products. customer references liked ness Digital engineering’s ability to provide development resources more quickly and less expensively than hiring locally, although some had experienced productivity issues. ness Digital engineering is a good choice for firms that want to raise their agile maturity while improving the value for money of their software development.

› Mindtree shifts clients to continuous delivery and automation. it is a broad global iT services provider, based in Bengaluru, india. approximately 5,000 of Mindtree’s 20,000 employees work on agile projects, with 60% of them in the us.

Mindtree’s agile practice places particular emphasis on converting clients’ culture and processes to continuous delivery. it is a leading provider of continuous testing services.5 it deploys several proprietary tools, such as its composable automated Platform for enterprises (caPe) Devops automation platform and its Decision Moments data science accelerator. it has some good examples of applying agile to business application implementation, such as a project to improve a major automobile manufacturer’s planning process. The breadth of services it offers could result in less focus on agile co-creation than some other firms in this evaluation. aD&D leaders of all maturity levels should consider Mindtree if they want a broad range of technical skills and hope to scale to global agile delivery involving multiple teams.

› Insight drives clients’ innovation by combining device and software expertise. it has grown from a hardware reseller into a provider of broad technology solutions. its Digital innovation agile practice comprises 1,200 people, of whom 75% are in north america, within a $7.1 billion company.

insight has many excellent co-innovation case studies that combine agile software development with emerging technology devices. for instance, it helped a railroad company develop a predictive maintenance solution that uses artificial intelligence (ai) to process data from on-train cameras, drones, and internet of things (ioT) chips. it was Microsoft’s worldwide ai partner of the year in 2018.6 it provides structured processes for agile implementation and knowledge transfer. The potential negative for aD&D leaders to consider is the agile practice’s relatively small size within insight. insight is a good choice for large enterprises that want to create innovative device and ioT-based solutions.

The 13 Providers That Matter Most And How They Stack Up

› HcL Technologies delivers Agile at scale, but with less focus on co-creation. HcL Technologies is an $8.6 billion company, employing more than 137,000 people. software development is one of many services it offers, including agile development of new applications, modernization of legacy software, and traditional outsourced application management services.

HcL Technologies’ portfolio of proprietary tools, including its HcL advantage customer experience platform and its Dryice brand of ai-powered products, is a differentiator. it has many large enterprise clients that regard it as a true strategic partner, underpinned by its corporate value of “relationship beyond the contract.” it may not be the best fit for smaller firms — some customer references complained about variable quality and productivity. HcL Technologies’ case studies demonstrate cost-effective delivery against client requirements, but there is less focus on agile knowledge transfer and on co-creation than for some of the other firms in this evaluation. The best fit for HcL Technologies is a large enterprise that wants to augment an existing agile team or scale its agile development as part of a wider transformation program.

contenders

› Virtusa accelerates Agile transformation but is weaker in co-innovation. virtusa’s agile practice has more than 3,000 development staff, of whom 90% are based in india. it represents 15% of the company; which also provides a range of other software implementation and support services.

virtusa is particularly good at transforming clients’ software development platforms, applying many of its own innovations including tools to assess requirements’ quality, using natural language processing, and predict the risk of proposed changes introducing defects. it has an extensive agile maturity assessment model that it uses to prioritize changes, with strong emphasis on architecture and governance. virtusa is weaker in co-innovation, with few compellingly innovative case studies and inconsistent references for collaboration and code quality. The best fit for virtusa is an aD&D organization that wants to raise its agile maturity, especially one that wants prescriptive help implementing a development platform and the tools associated with it.

› cybage strengthens Agile development teams but is less good at transformation. it has more than 4,000 developers, all based in india, and more than 200 clients across a variety of industries and sizes, including many leading software companies.

cybage emphasizes platforms and tools for development, testing, and deployment. it helps clients implement a range of leading tools, either from the Microsoft ecosystem or leading open source options. customer references praised the high quality and productivity of their cybage people, as well as the vendor’s ability to ramp up and down very quickly. a client in the travel industry particularly valued cybage’s expertise there. However, another cited a common outsourcing problem: its developers follow orders, but they aren’t creative enough. cybage is a good choice for an aD&D leader who needs to accelerate development to catch up with peers before she tries to leap ahead of them — and who wants to augment an internal agile team with low-cost, high-quality people.

The 13 Providers That Matter Most And How They Stack Up

› Mphasis helps clients in catch-up Agile transformations. it has more 4,000 india-based developers, with approximately 20% at clients’ sites in europe and north america. it has clients in many industries but has particular experience in financial services.

Mphasis has been providing outsourced agile development for more than 10 years. Most clients use it to augment existing teams while also providing agile coaching and knowledge transfer. Mphasis uses its own agile maturity model to assess clients’ readiness. it deploys its own framework for automated testing, combining its own intellectual property with open source tools. it has used agile methods to transform core banking for two clients, which proves its agile and financial services credentials, but these were catch-up projects, working to clients’ requirements. There is little evidence of real co-innovation to create differentiating software. aD&D leaders should consider Mphasis if they want external help to implement agile while cost-effectively extending their internal team’s development capacity.

evaluation overview

We evaluated vendors against 22 criteria grouped into three high-level categories:

› current offering. each vendor’s position on the vertical axis of the forrester Wave graphic indicates the strength of its current offering. Key criteria for these solutions include their ability to co-innovate differentiating software, to transfer knowledge of agile techniques, and to implement modern development tools and platforms.

› Strategy. Placement on the horizontal axis indicates the strength of the vendors’ strategies. We evaluated their strategy for succeeding and growing in this market, their ability to be true strategic partners with their best clients, and their strategy for hiring and retaining top talent.7

› Market presence. represented by the size of the markers on the graphic, our market presence scores reflect each vendor’s revenue from agile engagements, the size of their client bases, and the number of large-scale, multi-team development partnerships.

Vendor Inclusion criteria

forrester included 13 vendors in this assessment: 3Pillar Global, Brillio, cybage, ePaM systems, exadel, Grid Dynamics, HcL Technologies, insight, Mindtree, Mphasis, ness Digital engineering, niiT Technologies, and virtusa. each of these vendors has:

› Between 1,000 and 30,000 Agile development staff. firms of this size have the scale to deliver agile transformation while being small enough to be good strategic partners for a typical forrester client company.

› case studies demonstrating co-creation and Agile transformation. We have designed this evaluation for clients that want both. We therefore excluded firms that focus primarily on low-cost development services using traditional fixed-bid and/or waterfall models.

The 13 Providers That Matter Most And How They Stack Up

in our review, we conduct primary research to develop a list of vendors to consider for the evaluation. from that initial pool of vendors, we narrow our final list based on the inclusion criteria. We then gather details of product and strategy through a detailed questionnaire, demos/briefings, and customer reference surveys/interviews. We use those inputs, along with the analyst’s experience and expertise in the marketplace, to score vendors, using a relative rating system that compares each vendor against the others in the evaluation.

We include the forrester Wave publishing date (quarter and year) clearly in the title of each forrester Wave report. We evaluated the vendors participating in this forrester Wave using materials they provided to us by [end of briefing period date] and did not allow additional information after that point. We encourage readers to evaluate how the market and vendor offerings change over time.

in accordance with The forrester Wave™ vendor review Policy, forrester asks vendors to review our findings prior to publishing to check for accuracy. vendors marked as nonparticipating vendors in the forrester Wave graphic met our defined inclusion criteria but declined to participate in or contributed only partially to the evaluation. We score these vendors in accordance with The forrester Wave™ and The forrester new Wave™ nonparticipating and incomplete Participation vendor Policy and publish their positioning along with those of the participating vendors.

Integrity Policy

We conduct all our research, including forrester Wave evaluations, in accordance with the integrity Policy posted on our website.

But the code that drives a digital transformation doesn’t magically appear — it’s written by developers. That’s why digital natives like amazon, netflix, stripe, and uber value their software delivery capability more than any other corporate asset. see the forrester report “Digital Transformation requires Development Transformation.”
