Fray Angelico Chavez states: “Francisco Suarez Catalan, a native of Puerto de Santa Maria in Spain, came to New Mexico in February1777, from Chihuahua where he had lived for about 13 years. On June 24 he married Gertrudis Duran, daughter of Juan Duran,European, and Barbara Baca. When entering this marriage in the record the Padre made her a ‘Duran y Chaves’ – a patent error. Thecouple resided at Pajarito where a son, Jose Ramon, was born on January 20, 1779. A daughter, Maria Antonia Raf aela, married JoseMiguel Guerrero in 1798.
