Students came with spades, grab hoe, sacks and cleaning tools on the early morning of that September, after the usual morning preliminaries at school, each year level was given an area to level.

After four hours of toiling under the heat of the sun, the ground in front of the grade 7 and the second year rooms, was so good to look at, no stones, grass, nothing but, a flat area after the field work.

It had been a long plan of the school admin to level the ground, in front the school buildings to give the buildings a more agreeable look, it’s only now that the plan had been realized.

It started as a field work given to students who accumulated demerit for the last grading period, they were tasked to remove the excess soil in front of the grade 7 room, but since they weren’t able

to remove all soils in due time, some of the students who were not supposed to be working were seen helping in the excavation.

This action, prompted Mr. Madangeng to call for a half day ground-clearing day, in preparation just the same of the school ground in the National Greening Program, the department is implementing.

Something thought to be impossible turned out to be possible, with the unity and cooperation shown by the students, teachers and community people.

It was agreed upon, by the school administration and student leaders that some hours in the succeeding months to come will be allocated in the ground excavation, to continue the ground leveling.

As one, the Bangbang National High School (BNHS) family, worked hand-in-hand, rekindling the spirit of “bayanihan” or “baddang,” in the leveling of the frontage of the school buildings to make the school ground lower than the building last September 14, 2012.

“The result of the contest was really a big surprise, Bangbang NHS as a new school competing to the bigger and older schools in the division is something remarkable,” said Ms. Georgina Limbog, coach in Math.

Together with their coaches, Ms. Georgina Limbog (Math) and Ms. Lorna Buyayo (Science), Piog and Buyayo represented the Division of Ifugao in the Regional Science and Math Fair held at Tabuk City , Kalinga last October 5-8, 2012.

the NGP was done in an individual system, wherein each student has a plot to maintain, however the program wasn’t able to meet its expectations because of the many problems met, and so Ms. Geraldine D. Galangi, STEP adviser, said that this year it might be a more productive one, because the students would be working in as a group, assisted by their own advisers. It is the aim of the project to make the school greener in nature at the same time, engaging all student organization to come up with their own Income Generating Project (IGP), as said the seedlings will be distributed for free, and the proceeds that will be generated from the project will become the fund of the organization.

After the formal assignments were distributed to the different student organizations, the land preparation begun, from land tilling to the sowing of seeds, the student leaders worked during vacant hours to prepare their own Gulayan. “The project is not on a one-time scheme basis,

All teachers of this school joined the 2012 District Strategic Interface, conducted last August 7, 2012 at the Hungduan Central School Covered Court.

All teachers from both the elementary and secondary level of this district joined the stakeholders, coming from the Provincial, Municipal, Barangay, members of the PTA, and some Division Personnel of DepEd from Lagawe.

After the opening program, the state of the division of Ifugao in terms of performances and accomplishments were presented by Ms. MarcianaAydinan, EPS of Math while the district performance

The United Hungduan Organization (UHO), the Hongkong based OFW organization of the Ihungduans exhibited their ardent love and generosity to their fellow Ihungduans as last July 6, 2012, Ms. GemalynDumangeng, a representative of the organization visited the school to visit the grantees of their Educational Assistance Program (EAP) .

Ms. Dumangeng, on her visit met the first five (5) student-grantees of the EAP in this school; Apple KrizPuguon, Vivian Gamboc, Maribel Gumunot, Amelia Tobiagon and Job Vincent Puguon, who are all second year students.

the sustainability of the Gulayan Project should be observed by the organization throughout the school year, and so is the maintenance and constant check-up of the garden,” said Ms. Galangi.

The Math Organization, planted petchay and string beans near the entrance of the school, the Science Club on the other hand planted Okra and near the orchidarium.

The Sports Club, maintained the gabi plantation near the Comfort Rooms, and expanding still the area, planting more of its kind.

The Student Government Organization (SGO), STEP, Filipino Club and the Writer’s Club made an enclosed garden below the volleyball court, were plots were divided among the group.

However, because of the on-going leveling of the school ground the garden was removed and detached.

Meanwhile the affected organizations are planning to make another one when the ground would be stable.

The Students Technologies of the Philippines (STEP)-Bangbang NHS Chapter, led the whole BNHS in support of the National Greening Program (NGP), by enjoining all recognized student organizations to come up with their own Gulayan sa Paaralan project.

She reminded them of their responsibilities as grantees and encouraged them to continue doing their best in their studies as they were one of the few who were lucky enough to be given such assistance.

On the other hand, she informed the school that the organization is looking into giving two more additional slots this school year.

“We are only waiting for the final say of the chair, after which the formalities can be done already,” said Ms. Dumangeng on her visit.

Copies of the Report Cards where submitted to the organization for their reference.

EAP was first introduced last year, by Ms. Lorna Bidang, on the first visit of the organization to the school.

and accomplishments were also presented by Mr. Amado D. Antonio, Public Schools District Supervisor-Hungduan.

In his report, Mr. Antonio presented notable performances, the district was able to accomplish for the previous school year, NAT performances were also presented and although some schools in the elementary level belonged to the top performing schools in the different subject areas, there is still a big difference when compared to the national standard.

The interface ended with an open forum, where queries and questions were aired by the teachers and administrators.

While the RHU personnel are lecturing on the health related issues concerning smoking at the third year room, the PNP is concurrently having their own lecture at the grade 7 room dealing with the criminal offenses one can have in violating the anti-smoking act.

“Not everybody here is smoking, but some of the people around us do it, we must act and do something to help them realize the effects of smoking into their health,” said Dr. Eric Dugong, the Municipal Health Officer of Hungduan and the team leader of the RHU.

In a separate statement, COP DonatoTagubasi also explained that the municipality of Hungduan has a Municipal Ordinance concerning smoking, and that criminal offenses can be levied to somebody if found to be violating the terms appearing therein.

With the sudden change in the country’s Educational system, all grade7 teachers of this school attended the 5-days Regional Mass Training of Grade 7 teachers last May 19-23, 2012 at Baguio City.

Lectures on what is K-12, its importance on today’s setting, an actual setting of what would transpire in the classroom, the learning competencies, the activities and even answers on those activities were all discussed in the training.

Learner’s Package and Teacher’s Guide also for the first and second grading period were given to the participants; how to use the TGs and LPs was also a part of the lecture to ensure that teachers would not find any difficulty in using the new approach as soon as they return in their

The Philippine National Police (PNP)-Hungduan attested their genuine intention in helping the school by donating a pair of badminton racket and shuttle cocks for the intramural meet last September 18, 2012.

For the past three consecutive years, the PNP had been a constant partner of the school when it comes to sports development; they had been donating equipment, since the adoption of the school by their department.

PNP’s support is not only seen in terms of peace and security, they are also extending help in terms of helping the school implement its National Greening Program (NGP).

“Smoking, as others say may have a positive effect on one’s health, they say it will increase the mental alertness, it will make you active when you needed to do overtime, this may be true for a short span of time, but consider also the long term bad effects of smoking to your heath,” Ms. Sharon William said in her lecture.

It is a common knowledge that smoking is the major factor in having lung cancer and other cardio-vascular diseases she further added.

Teachers were grouped according to their area of specialization, those who teach English, Math, Filipino and MAPEH had their training at the University of the Cordilleras while those who teaches AP, Science, EdukasyonsaPagpapakatao and TLE had it at the University of Baguio.

The five-days training had been an avenue for the many what if, and how would it be questions on the issue of K-12 as all issues were being answered by the speakers and facilitators.

Information drives and symposiums were also conducted by the PNP to help the school administration in disseminating important updates and news the students needed to know.

On the other hand, three SB Members, namely Hon. Lucas A. Bugatti, Hon. Evelyn Y. Balenga and Hon. Ruben Wacoy, all members of the Sangguniang Bayan of this municipality donated a brand-new Canon Print-Copy-Scan Pixma MP287 printer to this school earlier this October.

“Being a student leader entails many responsibilities, there would be many sacrifices to face, but we do hope we can help the school,” said Atang after they were proclaimed winners.

The Student Government Organization, headed by the president MarivicDulnuan from the fourth year and treasurer Mary Ann Uyammi, served as facilitators of the forum. The SGO managed the Election Day successfully with the help of their adviser Mr. RupertoGalangi.

BADDANG: A culturAl HEritAGE

reading time

The students, coming from the different classes of Bangbang National High School, members of the faculty and some concern citizens pooled themselves together, digging and flattening the frontage of the buildings in preparation for the leveling of the school ground. This is “baddang” or bayanihan in action.

The “baddang” is an ancient Ifugao custom, time immemorial;

“Baddang,” a Tuwali term synonymous to “bayanihan” was best shown by groups of students, hundreds of them, teachers and concern community members as they all worked for the start of the ground leveling of this school.

it is a symbolic action of group of people working together as a voluntary help extended to somebody. No payment is being made; however, at some instances, food is being prepared by the “numpabaddang” or the beneficiary to show gratitude and appreciation for the help extended.

Most of the time in our daily living, the spirit of “baddang” is usually seen during, “ani,” harvest season,

“dang-ah,” hauling of timber from the mountains for house construction, preparations during wakes, weddings and other occasions where there are many works to be done.

“Baddang” is more than help extended to another. It includes all kinds of assistance; from laborious tasks to financial related matters, all are working as one. Working together is not only a social obligation, not only a duty to fulfill,

If asked, “why I read,” I would simply say “books always fascinate me, I always wanted to read.”

Reading is a skill one should master even at an early age, to read is to understand the written text and be able to analyze and apply it in the real-life situation.

Reading is such an enjoyable habit to some, spending time in reading a book or any reading material they would have, but do we really think all books, magazines and newspapers are really good to read?

As a reader, I will always say, evaluate first the material to read, ask opinions from those who already read the material, scan the inside pages, know more the author.

Why I say so? Some books and reading texts come in

a very attractive cover that you would be tempted to read it at once, but looking at the pages, these are not the appropriate one for students like us.

As students, we need to assess the content before reading; we should ask ourselves “would it be beneficial on my part reading this?”

but a spirit of togetherness bounded by faith, love, and charity.

The spirit of togetherness and group work should be instilled and implanted in the young for the development of proper attitudes, at home, in school, and in the community.

this is a culture, ifugao’s should be proud of, and should be continued--a living tradition of helping each other.

I should say, better check the school library, ask the teachers for books to read.

In this way, we are able to use the dust front covers of our books in the library. It is not only a material that speaks a certain subject and topic, but more so, a story of wonderful time, tales that sometime in the world, the author would have to sit all alone to create the verses we read.

Talking about it, these books are the reflection of life and itself. The evolution of generation to generation that makes a bounded written material as a reference of the past, and eventually the foundation of today.

Why do we read? Again, the question that pops out. Essentially, to learn. And by learning, we come to understand closer the world. Having a perspective on the other part of the world. Penguins. Lions. Fantasies. Alice in Wonderland. Lumawig. Kabunian. Culture. Ourselves.

An in depth understanding of our own selves that might unfold the answers of our own. Why physics? Why life?

The interrelationship of things are long been provided in those material. Life itself speak when you find them.

reality check: When leadership fades

HAircut! AN iSSuE?

“Many are called, but few are chosen,” an old adage, but still very applicable at present.

Student leaders are indeed very lucky to be chosen as one, they got popularity, they got the chance to be known, and they got the position many of the students are aiming for, and indeed to be a leader is something one should be proud of.

They somehow feel so lucky to be chosen among all those who tried in the different positions however; this is not the feeling all the time.

of embossed actual lettersarleNe t. callaNG

To be a leader is not all the time a feeling of elation as one feels, when declared to be the winner, the feeling fades, the enthusiasm vanishes, the eagerness declines.

The feeling- when faced with the many responsibilities at school and when duty calls would be in a dwindling situation; sometimes student leaders make excuses to escape the duties and responsibilities,

they got reasons and alibis not to join meetings and activities, and at some point in time they would say, they would “resign.”

Many student leaders during election period seems so noble, they got convincing speeches, made promises, they seem so sure of their words, but are they really that sincere?

Common observation nowadays is the poor participation of some elected student leaders in the different organization, they should be the one implementing and following the school polices, they should be the one leading the others, but where are they?

Since the opening of classes up to this time, every end of the month, proper haircut had been an issue, a problem of the school when many of the male students didn’t get a proper haircut.

It’s been a policy of the school for boys to maintain a proper haircut, as part of proper hygiene. However, some of the boys in school would often say, they hate having short hairs; they prefer having long, colored and even stylish hairs.

This situation sometimes would cause misunderstanding between a student and a teacher, especially

Truth hurts? Isn’t it?

Leaders play a very vital role in the development and success of one organization, the leaders are the makers, they are the privileged one, and many are expecting from them. They lead for others to follow.

Being a leader is not only having the title, but also having the character-the discipline.

Perhaps, at one point in time, before one chooses to run for a position, he must ask himself, am I really that honest? Can I be a leader?

when teachers would start questioning those “boys” who are not complying with the policy. Some of the boys would even answer back their teachers insisting what they like.

Now, what’s in a hair after all? As student are we really that in the position to answer back and question our teachers?

I think, this would not be a problem, if only we students know how to follow what has been set, we

One good reason why boys refuse to have their hairs cut short is the evident influence of media, we usually watch Korean styles, “emo” styles accompanied by eyeliner, and booming fashion items.

We look at this as the trending image that may somehow contributes to the overall appearance that we want to see. Truly, we are in time, “sunod sa

BNHS arms with love for countryBuwan ng Wika is more than just a celebration

This year’s theme is “Tatag ng Wikang Filipino, Lakas ng Pagka-Filipino.”

BNHS realized that the celebration is more than just a celebration, where annually it is recognized and observed. ‘It is more than of the usual activities that we conduct, and importantly how we internalized Buwan ng Wika as an instrument for love of our country regardless of what tribe we belong, what language we speak, and what culture we act on.‘

Ms. Florintina Pugong, Filipino subject teacher, on her speech at the opening program of the month-long celebration emphasized the importance of the celebration and she encouraged the use of the national language in their daily discourse.

“Being a Filipino is not merely measured with what we achieved for the past, democratic rallying, and winning battles of competitiveness, but how the sense of acting is being lived.“

Ms. Pugong made it a point that the celebration should be felt by every student and teacher of this school

from the beginning of the month till the culminating activity by preparing activities that would display one’s patriotism.

Together with the Filipino club, they prepared a flip chart, containing Tagalog vocabularies outside the faculty room, wherein the students read from time to time, to further enhance their vocabulary skills.

Presentations also were presented by the students every last Friday of the week before the flag ceremony to commemorate the celebration.

On its first week of observance, the Grade 7 students presented a composed Tagalog song, with the theme centered on one’s love to his country and his duty in promoting the use of it.

The second year students presented a “Sabayang Pagbigkas” on its second week of observance, while the third year class presented a theatrical play where they portrayed how ignorance of one’s language can lead to one’s failure.

The fourth year students, on its culminating activity, presented a very

After the presentation, Ms. Pugong gave her final words, congratulating everyone for a job-well done and for the cooperation shown by the students.

• A day to remember was felt by all teachers of this school, as the students, gave cards, bouquets of flowers, poems and letters during the celebration of the world teacher’s day last October 5, 2012.

My TeacherA TRIBUTE

My HeroThank you Ma’am Car and Ma’am Maryet

With the first batch, were also the pioneer teachers and administrator, one of them was Madam Carmen L. Himmiwat as the adviser.

Madam Car, as fondly called was the first adviser of the first batch of this school, they were then having their classes at the Hungduan Central School, as one of the pioneer teacher Madam Car, did her best in keeping her class intact despite the many problems being encountered in the beginning. She was vividly remembered by her former students at this school as a jolly and compassionate teacher and an adviser. Ma’am Car, returned to her former station after serving the school for two school years.

We also had, the first principal of this school, Madam Marietta T. Himmiwat, she was the mother of the school as many calls her, aside from managing the mother school (Hungduan NHS), she still findsher time in attending all her duties at this school regardless of the distance she has to travel. With her usual assistance, the school was able to gain its independence in 2009. She served the school for three school years, until a new school head was assigned here.

Both great women will always be a part, not only in the history of this school, but most importantly, in the hearts of the people they touched. The lessons they taught, the memories they left and the life’s lessons they shared, will always be in the hearts of their students and co-workers in this school.

Our school is one of the newest in the province. It’s been 6 years, since the first batch commenced the opening of classes, our school was then known as Hungduan NHS Extension School (until it was separated in 2009 as Bangbang NHS by virtue of RA 9622).

THE FiNAl STANDSeptember 3, 2012- The

final day has come, the day for our very own Madam Marietta Taguiling Himmiwat, principal of Hungduan National School and our former principal (2006-2009) would give her final words and impart her words of wisdom to all those who attended the Salamat-Paalam, a farewell party in honor of her.

As an alumna of the institution, I was tasked to deliver a speech on behalf of the Hungduan NHS Alumni Community. Let us know more Ma’am Maryet, our former principal and mother.

The 2012 National Teachers Month’s celebration theme, “My Teacher, My Hero,” is very appropriate and timely for today’s occasion. As today, we recognize and honor the services rendered, the sacrifices offered, and the love shared by our honoree, Ma’am Marietta T. Himmiwat.

A quote says, “Good teachers impart good education. Great teachers groom their students to become leaders. Ordinary teachers direct us along the right path, but great teachers inspire us to seek our own path. They encourage us to discover our talents.”

Ma’am MarriettaHimmiwat, is indeed great, worth remembering, and worthy to be emulated.

Ten years back, when I last stepped on this ground as a student, and many memories still lingers in my mind way back high school. High School days would

not be complete, without the sweet yet firm voice of our principal then Ma’am Maryet.

My first encounter with her was when I first entered Hungduan NHS, as a sophomore, I’m so nervous and apprehensive of how would it be in my new school, I was really worried, but the sweet principal, Mam Mariette’s warm accommodation and friendly face wiped out all the worries I have in mind. And I can say the next 3-years of my stay in this school with Ma’am Maryet, turned out to be a very memorable one.

One thing, I will never forget from her was, was when in one of our subject, the teacher was not in, nobody would teach that period, and so to make the class intact, she came into our classroom and became our teacher. We’re not used with a principal teaching in the classroom, we thought, she would be very strict but she

was not. She made the lesson very clear, for us to understand. Andif my memory is still that sharp, the lesson was the parts of a business letter.

These are just some of the many good deeds, Mam Mariette had shown us.

I’ve been thinking really of how I would say these words, “thank you”. Reared in a culture where it seems so awkwardto show the affection you have with somebody, it’s so hard to say the words “thank you” but I’m taking the courage now, I’m really grateful meeting her.

Whenever I watch the story of Mrs. Thompson and Teddy, the first thing that would come in my mind is- Mam maryet.

These words, may not be enough to pay back whatever she had given me, but I still wanted her to know these things.

Lasting Friendship

Perhaps, the problem is not with the teachers after all, not because the subject was so boring and so difficult, but because we do not have a “study habit.”

Sometimes, it is on how we look at things and deal with it that would make these things to be so difficult; now here are some practical “techniques and guides” one can try to achieve a higher grade;

1. Use your senses. We are lucky if we are born with the complete senses isn’t it? Now learn to use these senses while

inside the classroom, while having the activities outside, while answering the assignments. Listen attentively for lectures and instructions. Speak when in doubt or when you have something to share. Most of all learn how to use common sense.

How would one maintain friendship?

Friendship can be said as the relationship between two or more persons who share the mutual feeling of trust and affection. This very sacred relationship is known to humankind time immemorial, we learn of many friendships that lasted for years. Now how were they able to maintain such?

Secrets to keep friendship last that long is still a question; however, some would advise that to keep friends, one must have to “trust” one another. No matter what happen, no matter what

How to get higher grades?

2. Be confident. People are all given the confidence, it is only that some are more expressive and more vocal but if one practices his self-esteem, then he will surely make it easy, communicating with teachers and other students.

3. Read. They always say, reading makes one learn, but consider the books to read, a good book is a good friend you will have, for from reading you learn. So choose the books to read, learn to distinguish which is good and which is bad.

These are just some of the many ways one can have in achieving higher grades, many still are given but you may try one of the mentioned above, and for sure you will succeed.

Many students clamor of the low grades they get after periodical tests, many are wondering, many are so unsatisfied with the grades they have, some even think that perhaps the teachers hated them so they gave them low scores, but did we really ever thought of checking our performances for the whole duration of the grading period?

will come as long as there is “trust,” there is friendship.

Trust would make us rely on friends, it would make us confide, it would make us understand and know more the person we consider as friend. It is with this that we can make friendship blossom into something that would stand the test of time. Something that would last-long even if situations do not agree.

As they always say, “It is better to trust somebody you do not love, but love somebody you do not trust.”

When 3 minihydros light the community...

“Water is life.”

Water has been the major constituent of life, from the biggest living thing on earth to the smallest creature we have in here, water has always been and will always play a vital role in the survival of all living things.

Our town is one of the municipalities in the province, blessed with abundant water, from the cool rivers, towering falls and the sparkling creeks with the over flowing beautiful cascades irrigating the rice fields, one can see how our place is blessed with so much water.

Indeed water is such of importance; however, the true power of water is not only seen on these natural sceneries, not only the cool bath on the rivers, not only in the irrigating of rice fields, and not only for home and offices use.

Based on the book, “Understanding

Mini-Hydroelectric Generation” by Christopher Weaver, senior engineer with Energy and Resource Consultants, an interdisciplinary consulting firm in Boulder, Colorado, USA, electricity can be generated from the power of flowing water.

This is called hydroelectric generation, and it can be done anywhere that there is water and a hill or drop for it to run down—in an irrigation canal, where a river runs through rapids or over a waterfall, or where a dam has backed up water above the level of the river.

According to Weaver, hydroelectric generating plants come in many sizes--from huge plants that produce more electricity than most countries can use, to very small plants that supply electricity for a single house.

Hydroelectric plants which supply electric powers in the range from about 15 kilowatts to 15,000 kilowatts are called

a cultural ordination!

Apu Binlingan taught the young generation on the proper handling of indigenous materials during the liyah ceremony. It is an ordination of native priests or mumbaki, becoming a full pledged mumbaki. A tradition handed down to generations, this will be presented during the National Music of Culture and Young Artist (NAMCYA).

mini-hydroelectric or mini-hydro. Other phrases that mean the same

thing are “small-scale hydro” and “small hydro.” Fifteen kilowatts is about the amount of power used by seven or eight houses in the industrial countries, or by a very small manufacturing plant, or it can provide lighting and other basic services for a village of 50-80 houses.

Another type of hydro plant, called “micro-hydro,” is better suited to village level development and local self-help projects. These plants are usually smaller than 15 kilowatts, and can be built by people without much special training, using mostly local materials and skills. Micro-hydro plants are usually very low in cost, but they are less efficient, and the quality of the electricity is not as good. Micro-hydro plants are suited to running lights, small motors, and electric cookers in isolated

on the development of the community, developing three mini-hydroelectric power plants; two plants are in Baang and one in Gode, Bangbang with the addition of one water-operated rice mill at Poblacion where people can benefit much from the services being offered with the use of these water generated powers.

Minimal fees are being collected in the use of these facilities, compared to the others using a different source.

The creation of these facilities in the area helps in the lives of the people, the income, the economical fees and all of these shows, what water can do in our lives.

In addition, Cong. Teddy Baguilat, as written by Vency Balayungan, already endorsed the Ibulao 1 River mini-hydro project (at Brgy. Bokiawan), the Ibulao 2 River project (at Brgy Hucab), the Hungduan River project (at Brgy.Bokiawan) and the Asin River, all in Kiangan town and the theLamut River in BrgyJolowon in Lamut.

“Micro and mini-hydro projects are far better and more sustainable than mining and other extractive projects that are proven to cause adverse impacts to the environment,” said Baguilat.

Balayungan added Baguilat explained that like all other projects that will affect indigenous communities, the mini-hydro projects also have to undergo the Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) requirement for the issuance of the Certificate of Precondition by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) to the company who will undertake the project.

There and then, the mini-hydroelectric power plant is not a signus to start up a large scale activities that might harm our rice terraces, but assuring a sustainable balance to environment and community development.
