I remember thinking that he was beginning a new journey that would lead him into adulthood, and unforeseen adventures and opportunities. It meant leaving behind the security of our home and our presence in his life, but it was time for him to do that. But he wasn’t the only one setting out on a new journey. We were, too. As we left Wes at college, we were leaving behind the days when we knew everything (or most things) he was doing. We were leaving behind the place we’d had in his life, and the place he’d had in our home for the last 19 years. And we were embarking on a journey into becoming the parents of an adult. It was hard. To this day, every time I hold a baby at baptism, I remember the feel of Wes in my arms. Every time a preschooler runs into my office, I catch a glimpse of Wes at that age. Every time I walk into the high school, I remember Wes as a teenager. When we dropped Wes off at college, I was sad. I knew what I was leaving behind. I did not know that the future would hold the joy of watching our son grow into a confident and thoughtful adult with a passion for the work he does. I didn’t know that the future would hold a wonderful daughter-in-law and two grand-dogs. If I did, perhaps it wouldn’t have been so hard to leave him at Wittenberg that first day. Every journey begins with leaving something. Usually it’s something familiar and comfortable … friends, our hometown, the house we grew up in. Sometimes what we have to leave behind is less tangible … the way we’ve always done things, the attitudes we’ve held. We often talk about the season of Lent as a journey of faith. That’s a good image, because growing into greater faithfulness does mean leaving behind our less faithful ways (even though they might be very familiar and comfortable.) What will you leave behind to journey with Jesus to the cross this year? Long-held grudges? Behaviors that are not life- giving? Words that hurt rather than heal? Half-hearted commitment to worship and learning from God’s word? Lent is a journey that invites us to leave behind what is unfaithful in order to move into a more faithful future. Like the beginning of any other journey, it can be hard. And like any other journey, it can lead us into a future full of blessings that we can’t foresee. As we started to leave the campus after dropping our son off at college on that hot August day, I turned my car around, ran into the bookstore, and bought Witt sweatshirts for Steve and for me. I turned the air conditioning in my car as high as it would go, put on the sweatshirt, and let its soft warmth and connection with our son comfort me all the way home. Leaving can be hard. But every journey begins with leaving. With you on the journey of faith,

Sunday, March 15, 6:30-8:00 PM Crossroads Class

7th-12th Grade Friday, March 6, 7:00 PM- Hunger Retreat Saturday, March 7, 5:00 PM We will stop eating at 5:00 PM on Friday, head over to the church at 7:00,

stay overnight at church, and go without food until Saturday at 5:00 PM. So we will go hungry for 24 hours. We will have fruit juice and water on hand during the retreat, but we will definitely get a sample of what it is like to go without food, for a change. As time goes on it becomes hard to think about anything but food, and the last meal you've missed. It’s a serious issue in our world, and a serious issue in our nation. The problem is not far from us. In one local school district, 40% of the children are eligible for free lunch at school. We will learn more about all of these things during the retreat.

My Church Family, Thank you so much for the box of yummy snacks for the Super Bowl! I enjoyed watching it with my friends, and the snacks will last me a long time! I am truly blessed! Thank you everyone! Nora Barczak Hi church family! Thanks so much for the care package. I love snacks. While I did not get a chance to watch any of the game (I spent most of last weekend at the library), I'm always happy to know I'm thought of and cared for by all of you here. Additionally, being there for chili this afternoon was a delight! Much love, Grace Casper

Dear Our Redeemer Church, Thank you so much for the Super Bowl care package! I received it last week and it brightened my day. Grace Harris Dear Our Redeemer, Thank you so much for my Super Bowl goodies! My roommate and nursing friends enjoyed all the sweet treats. I always appreciate the thoughtfulness of my church family. Our Redeemer, Thank you so much for all of the snacks! I greatly appreciate you thinking of me. It was definitely the highlight of my week. My roommates have already dug into them!! Kindly, Kennedy King

Spring is just around the corner according to Phil. With that forecast, the Property Committee is preparing for the needs of the lawn, shrub beds and a new on-site storage building. Work will soon begin for the storage building that will be constructed behind the pavilion in the upper parking lot. With this new building, we can eliminate the need for the offsite rental unit that is currently used and replace the small garden shed on our property. The building will be 30 ft. x 14 ft. x 8 ft. and have an exterior that is both eye appealing and maintenance free. During excavation of the site and construction, parking will be limited in the upper lot. Our annual Spring Clean-up will be held in mid-April based on weather conditions, so watch for the volunteer sign-up sheet that will be posted. Maintaining our property simply means, “Gods Work…Many Hands”

Additional Food Assistance for those in Need

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will supply “Produce to People” on Tuesday, March 3 from 10:00 AM-Noon at the Washington County Fairgrounds. “Produce to People” provides individuals and families with 30 to 50 pounds of food consisting mostly of fresh produce. Upon arrival, you will be required to answer and sign a quick questionnaire. Then you will receive a ticket, which you will exchange for food. You do not need to bring additional paperwork—the questionnaire is a legal document. Signing it certifies that you qualify for the food. Be sure to bring bags, boxes or a rolling cart as you will receive 35 to 50 pounds of food. For more information, visit their website at https://www.pittsburghfoodbank.org/what-we-do/food-to-people/produce-people-p2p/.

Glass Recycling is now in Peters Township

We will no longer collect your glass here at the church. A recycling container for glass is now available behind the Peters Township Fire Station at 245 East McMurray Road. Glass is accepted daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but it must be clean, no lids or rings, jars or bottles only. That means no table glasses, vases, Pyrex or candle containers with wax residue. Glass only is accepted - no bags or boxes. The recycling container was provided by the PA Resources Council (PRC). Glass is also accepted at Michael Brothers on Horning Road.

EARTH HOUR - Saturday, March 28 8:30 - 9:30 PM

What is Earth Hour? It is World Wildlife Fund’s annual global event where hundreds of millions of people switch off their lights for one hour to show they care about our planet. Won’t you consider joining us not for just the symbolic hour but all day everyday to save Planet Earth!

Our next opportunity to serve will be Thursday, March 19. We will provide our support services at Trinity United Methodist Church, which serves as a host church. We will be transporting our guests to and from Crafton. We are still looking for a volunteer to serve as:

An overnight host (8:30 PM-6:00 AM). Serve as one of two overnight hosts who sleep all night at the Trinity Methodist facility. Air beds are provided, which are actually quite comfortable. You would bring your own sheets, etc. This generally is a quiet night, with the only interruptions being a crying baby or someone going to the restroom.

Please sign up to help. If you have any questions about the Family Promise program, please contact Pastor Broome at 724-941-7467 or [email protected].

NOA H’S AR K PR E S C H O O L

February is one of my favorite months in our preschool! We don’t focus much on Valentine’s day here, instead, we work to recognize that everyone has different love languages and we aim to help children explore and understand how many ways there are to love others, beyond a paper heart! We have been blessed, recently, with so many ways to share love and learn about ways to spread it!

*We had a visit from Miss Verna who brought us snakes, turtle and lizards. We learned how to best love God’s creatures by being gentle and quiet around them. We learned to watch their body language for signs that they are uncomfortable or worried, something we do with our friends as well! We learned what to feed the animals to care for them and how much these animals do for us. *Easter Seals visited to share Disability Awareness Presentations with our children. The Easter Seals representatives brought helpful tools: Braille books, walkers, prosthetics and small wheelchairs for the children to try. What a lovely way to help children understand that while someone may look different or move in a different way, they are really, very much like you and me. Through this, we learn more about how to love our friends with different abilities, by being gentle with their needed devices, treating them with respect, including them in our play and giving them room to be themselves. *We learned about loving our families when we invited them to come to our Bagels with a Buddy events. We planned menus, cut fruit, prepared gifts and treats and made special invitations as ways to love our family and friends.

There are so many simple ways to spread love each day. These three different events help us all see that simply putting thought into the best way to care for others is a great start in fostering empathy and love! This month also brought the opening of registration for the 2020-2021 school year. I am so grateful for our board who worked so hard to make this a smooth and caring process for all involved. Many of our classes filled in the first 30 minutes of registration! We do have 5 spaces still open for 2-year-olds and 3 spaces available for 4-year-olds. We believe strongly in our philosophy of accepting children exactly where they are and teaching them through enriching, hands on, play-based activities and we have a desire to give that experience to as many children as possible. If you know anyone who would enjoy being part of our wonderful preschool, please have them give us a call! Finally, if you’d like to share some love with Noah’s Ark, Save the Date for our Spring Fling Fundraiser to be held April 25 from 7:00-10:00. We will be enjoying time together with silent auctions, wine and beer tastings, and food from Girl Friday, all while raising money to replace the preschool flooring! Heidi Garner, Director Noah’s Ark Preschool

At their February 20 meeting, council elected the following members to serve as officers;

Gary Milavec, President Keith Lowery, Vice-President
