Integrative Instruction at Fisher

“Since problems in the real world do not come neatly labeled as being finance, marketing, or strategy problems, corporate leaders need to develop skills to integrate their functional knowledge. We co-teach a course on mergers and acquisitions that takes such an integrative and multi-disciplinary view.”

fisher.osu.edu/emba

“The most valuable element of the Fisher EMBA program for me has been the opportunity to update my business tools set and strategic management skills. I also value the interaction with my classmates and team members as we challenge each other while learning and sharing business knowledge and experience.”

“The Fisher EMBA program has provided me with the additional knowledge and skills that are immediately applicable to my everyday business situations. A Global PerspectiveRecognizing that successful decision making may often depend on how well you understand the current global business environment, the Fisher EMBA curriculum incorporates a global perspective that forms an integrative thread throughout the program.

Topics and issues are viewed not only with the total organization in mind but also in the context of their socioeconomic, political, and cultural environments.

7

fisher.osu.edu/emba

A global integration course focuses specifically on the international dimension of today’s management problems. A required international experience—offered only to program participants—provides an excellent opportunity for you to understand the challenges faced by business managers operating overseas.

“The Fisher EMBA program recognizes that business today is a global endeavor. Students

returning from study abroad, which is uniquely integrated with the international business

module, say their perspective has been transformed. They now view foreign locations as

market opportunities and as sources of innovations and competition.“

Only completed application packages will be brought before the Admissions Committee for consider-ation. The Admissions Committee follows a rolling admissions process, whereby each application package is considered separately and measured against the acceptance criteria. Thus, to ensure a place in the class, you are advised to submit your application package as early as possible prior to the deadline date.

Financial Aid

Financial aid recipients are billed quarterly, upon receipt of their aid disbursement. More information on financial aid can be found at fisher.osu.edu/prospective/graduate/emba/admissions/financial-aid.

For further instructions on submitting transcripts from foreign institutions, please contact Mara McKee at (614) 688-5840.

4. Recommendation forms (3): Request recommendations from three professional references, using the recommendation forms provided in the application packet. Each recommender must complete the form and return it to you in a sealed, signed envelope for inclusion with your application materials. Unless you are self-employed, one of these forms should be completed by your immediate supervisor.

5. Employer sponsorship: Ask your employer to write a sponsorship statement on company letterhead (see sample letter included in the application packet) and submit it with your application materials. Endorsement of your candidacy by your employer, including an explicit commitment of financial resources (if applicable) and time, is a critical factor in the admission decision.

6. Statement of self-nomination: Please provide a brief statement (one or two pages in length) explaining your reasons to enter the Fisher Executive MBA program. Please indicate how enrollment in the Fisher Executive MBA degree program might be expected to impact the demands of your work responsibilities and schedule.

“The tools, information, and experience gained through-out the program have been immediately applicable on a daily basis. Even more, the interactions with classmates plus the perspectives and knowledge shared during our three-day on-campus sessions and all the time in-between with individual teammates make up a tool box to deal with real-life situations on Monday morning.”

Ben HawksworthEMBA Class of 2008Vice PresidentFifth Third Bank

“Since the program focuses on teamwork, I not only learn from the faculty, but also from my fellow classmates. Their varying working experiences provide a diverse perspective on our projects.”

A Convenient Program FormatIn addition to the expertise of the faculty, a very appealing aspect of the Fisher MBA is the fast pace of the program. It only takes 18 months to complete an MBA, and, although you may feel that you will have to sacrifice and devote all of your free time to studying, you don’t! Compared to other MBA program formats, you don’t have to quit working in order to attend classes or commute to campus several nights every week. Instead, with a completely pre-planned program calendar, you attend classes only three days each month. This format allowed me to have my evenings free, plan my time away from the office well in advance, and also gave me time to balance my professional and personal obligations with my spouse, family, and friends. I cannot imagine another MBA program that is so convenient while expediting my graduation. The Fisher EMBA program enabled me to learn business concepts that were immedi-ately applicable to my work. I’ve even received a promotion after my first 12 months in the program—something that has also occurred for some of my classmates!

A Typical On-Campus WeekendThursday / Day 1 Between on-campus sessions, my team holds weekly conference calls to discuss cases and divide up assignments and projects. On average, I spend about four to six hours during the week and 10 hours on the weekend reading and working on assignments.

Each on-campus session is a mixture of academics and social activities that begin on Thursday. We have a morning class from 8 a.m.–noon, an hour lunch break, and then an afternoon class from 1–5 p.m.

Thursday’s classes are followed by a short cocktail hour with a guest speaker. After this, most teams spend time together by going to dinner or working on projects.

Friday / Day 2

Friday’s class schedule is the same as Thursday, but in the evening our class enjoys a group activity planned by the class “cruise director.” I’ve been fortunate enough to be our class’s cruise director. Some EMBA Friday evening activities have included wine making and tasting; St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, and holiday parties; a basketball tournament; a ladies-only night out; dinner at a fine restaurant; and a concert courtesy of a classmate’s band!

Saturday / Day 3

Although my classmates and I are some-times tired from Friday’s activities, we still enjoy our morning and afternoon class sessions. By the time we leave at 5 p.m., it’s hard to believe all of the academic knowledge that we acquired while having fun in the process!

Max M. Fisher

Throughout his life, Max M. Fisher was a model for those who are committed to making a positive difference in the world around them. In 1993, Fisher’s desire to see Ohio State’s business college become one of the premier management institutions in the country resulted in a generous gift that spearheaded the building of what is now recognized as one of the finest business school campuses anywhere. In recognition of his commitment, the college was named the Max M. Fisher College of Business. Max Fisher’s success, integrity, and commitment to give back to the community are an inspiration to all of us at Fisher to live up to the Ohio State motto to “do something great.”
