McDowell gathered together the
largest military force seen in
America up to that time. 35,000
inexperienced men marched
towards Richmond.
Beauregard had an army of
nearly 22,000that gathered at
Manassas Junction.
Two-thirds of his men to make a diversionary frontal attack on Beauregards men
at Bull Run while at the same time launching a surprise attack with a third of his
army against and behind his right flank. McDowell planned to get behind
Beauregards men and ensure that they could not retreat back to Richmond.

McDowells plan

McDowells plan had one weakness. It had to be carried out accurately if it was to
be successful. Each part of his army had a specific task to complete. For
experienced combat officers, moving men around on the battlefield may have
been a reasonably simple task. His inexperienced officers found it all too much.
McDowell did not help his cause by delaying giving out his orders. This gave
Beauregard time to establish his lines and consolidate his positions. This
weakness contributed to the confederates victory in this battle.

Political Significance
Results - Confederates 1 Union 0
Major wake up call to the North. Union forces were
routed by Beauregard forces in a day.
It was an indication that this would be a long and
bloody war and would require new leadership and
improved training to prepare the federal troops forsustained action in the field.

At the Battle of Bull RunThey came from Pennsylvania and some fromMarylandTo see the Rebel boys get spanked by HonestAbes broad hand
We said well run em to Atlanta and to Galveston

But they ran us back to Washington andPhiladelphiaAnd Philadelphia
The ladies wore their brightest shawlsThe gentlemen were gayThey came to see their Yankee boys whip oldVirginiaI held my mommas hand and skipped
When a soldier said to meWould you rather have Jeff Davis hat or the
sword of Bobbie Lee
We said well run em to Atlanta and to Galveston

And Philadelphia
And then the general doffed his hat and said lets
rest a spellAnd for the first time we all heard that awful rebel
yellThe waters of Manassas Creek became a rubyredand many a Reb and Yankee boy lay in thewillows dead
We said well run em to Atlanta and to GalvestonBayBut they run us back to Washington and
