Out the Study Window The EasterScriptures Ihave never usedA number of years ago Ishared a devotion basedon the lectionary withthe staff at a previouschurch. What is most

intriguing about this story is that the Scripture I focused my devotion on was the Easter story frommatthew, (which is the assigned passage for thisEaster.) I read portions of the 27th chapter and thenportions of the 28th chapter and when I was finishedthere was dead silence.

On that staff team there were eight program staff people and six pastors, and it was not a group that fellsilent very often. After a few moments, it was the pastors who began to share first. One by one, the following statements were made;

“Do you remember reading about the earthquake thatshook at the time of the crucifixion?”

“Did you remember reading about another earthquakeat the tomb when mary magdalene and other mary met the angel?”

“What about all that business of the tombs beingopened, and the bodies of the saints being raised, andhow they appeared to many in the city?”

Finally, one pastor asked the others if they had everpreached on these passages from matthew at Easter. Not one of us had. This year I will attempt to makesense of what I have come to believe are two of themost allusive Easter passages in Scripture. Pray forme, and with me.

April 16: ACE in recess for Easter Sunday

April 23: FPC Welcomes Bryan MillerBryan miller will be our guest speaker. He is executive director of Heeding God’sCall (HGC), a faith-based, grassroots group working to prevent gun violence. Heholds a master's of Science in foreign service from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Gun violencematters to Bryan because his brother, michael John miller, an FBI agent, was killed by a man using an automatic pistol which allowed ‘for rapid fire.’ This could only happen in the U.S.A. You can preview his vital message at: Heeding God’s Call on YouTube®. He explains how HGC helps to reduce gun violence by bringing greater scrutiny upon the point offirst sale of guns: gun shops. For Christians looking for a very pro-active way to reduce gun violence, themethod that miller describes is encouraging.

April 30: Witnesses for Spirituality‘Witnesses for Spirituality’ offers us an opportunity to hear members of our congregation share their ownspiritual journeys and daily practices. Come and hear this inspiring panel!

PLEASE NOTE: April 30 will be the last ACE class until September.

FPC Youth Mission Trip Fundraiser

You can ‘take stock’ in this valuable youth experience by purchasing stock!

This year, 20 FPC youth have expressed an interested ingoing on our mission trip to Loveland, Colorado, to work atan Equestrian Outreach Ranch with special needs children.

This is one of the largest groups we’ve had in a while—and weneed to fundraise $10,000 to make this trip happen. Our trivia night fundraiser was an

excellent start, giving us $3,000 to kick-off our efforts…so now we have $7,000 to go!

The youth are considering other fundraisers to help at this juncture, but between school fundraisers and bandfundraisers and choir fundraisers, the market is pretty tight. It was mentioned at our last CEFY meeting thatif 45 individuals in our congregation each made a $150 donation as an investment in our youth, we would beable to cover all of the youth who want to attend this life-changing week. Anyone who is able to make this donation for our youth would be issued a “Stock Certificate” showing their investment in our youth, and would be invited to a private dinner, served bythe youth who went on the mission trip, later this fall for a personal presentationby the youth of what they experienced during this amazing week.

Any support is so appreciated. If a financial donation to this is hard rightnow, your prayers are also gratefully sought. For more information, pleasecontact Director of Christian Education Tiffany Horvath (563-326-1691,ext. 209; [email protected]). GOD BLESS!

Grant Funds Available - Deacons’ Endowment FundThe Deacons’ Endowment Fund (DEF) was established tohelp groups and organizations within the First PresbyterianChurch and the church community that are developing newmission and outreach programs by providing seed money inthe form of matching grants. What is the Deacons’ Endowment Fund? These funds areawarded for the purpose of helping to establish new mission, outreach, pastoral care, and spiritual development programswithin our church community. What type of grant is available? DEF grants are designatedto help defray the start-up cost of new projects or programsaccording to guidelines established by the Board of Deacons.► Programs or projects need to be of an ongoing nature rather

than a one-time event.► Any money that is awarded is in the form of a matching

grant. In other words, funding from other sources shouldbe part of the initial planning process.

► “matching funds” need not be interpreted to be only at50% and matching funds do not necessarily need to be inthe form of cash.

► The maximum grant that can be awarded is $5,000.Who can apply? Grants can provide funding to any organization or group within the FPC and the church community that is trying to start a new mission or outreachprogram or project within the church community. How does one go about applying for a grant? Each group, individual, or organization should establish a projected budgetfor the program, create a description of the program goals aswell as an outline of how those goals will be achieved, and anorganizational structure. These are critical elements of theprocess. A grant application form must then be completed andsubmitted for consideration by the Deacons Endowment FundReview Board. The grant application process is open for theperiod march 15 - may 15, 2017. Grant recommendations ofthe Review Board will be subject to approval by the Board ofDeacons in their July meeting. If you have questions aboutDEF grants or applications, information is available throughthe church office, at the Welcome Desk, the Deacons’ Corner, the church’s website at www.fpcdavenport.org, or from BrockEarnhardt ([email protected]; 563-343-6304).
