SUCH A YOUNG MAN

Bushy hair Narrow shoulders A thin man A little nerdy even

Hardly the sort of leading man we expect today

He looked almost shy as he thanked everyone who had spokenbefore him that day He stared at the ground or his shoes or the

notes before him His opening lines were awkward promising a

tedious interminable speech on a sweltering day under the Hous-

ton sun He fumbled with the lectern while delivering a line with

the unfortunate rhyming of knowledge and college

But when he started his speech in earnest the magic beganldquoWe set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to

be gainedrdquo he said Knowledge that ldquomust be won and used for the

progress of all people hellip Tere is no strife no prejudice no nation-

al con1047298ict in outer space as yet Its hazards are hostile to us all Its

conquest deserves the best of all mankindrdquo

It was September 12 1962 and John F Kennedy was stand-

ing in Rice University stadium delivering what became perhaps

his most famous speech With his words and with the force of

o putting an American astronaut on the moon beore the end o

Tis got the laugh it deserved Rice was known as a school or

intellectuals and their ootball team was routinely slaughtered byootball powerhouse Te University o exas But Jack raised his

voice and cut through their laughter uttering the lines that give

me chills even today

ldquoWe choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other

thingsmdashnot because they are easy but because they are hardrdquo

Now their laughter turned to cheers He rode their joy and

turned it into an uproar

ldquoBecause that goal will serve to organize and measure the best

o our energies and skills Because that challenge is one that wersquore

willing to accept One we are unwilling to postpone And one we

intend to winrdquo

palpable energy in his listeners An energy that had existed in po-

tential orm but had remained only latent until he began

have a similar power Tey must arrest the imagination o your

reader and 1047297re his vision so he will go with you through the tri-

als and triumphs o your story You want him right with you to in

JFKrsquos words eel the ground shake and the air shatter by the sheer

orce o your tale as i it is the greatest adventure on which man

has ever embarked

You want your novelrsquos launch to be as thrilling as the lifoff

o a Saturn C-1 booster rocket Whether itrsquos an adventure story a

horror novel a romantic comedy a cozy mystery or whatever else

you know your beginning must be strong or the reader will never

endure it long enough to get to the heart o your story

You may already know a bit about how the publishing process

works You know that a literary agent or an acquisitions editor at

a publishing house will decide the ate o your book based merely

on its opening pages

I you knew how little o a manuscript is read beore a publisher

chooses to accept or reject a book you might be appalled Usually

it is only one person the acquisitions editor who has read the book

rom start to 1047297nish beore a contract is offeredmdashor not All the other

eight or twelve executives have read perhaps only 1047297fy pages o the

book Te 1047297rst 1047297fy pages Or ewer Maybe only the 1047297rst ten Tey

trust the editor or the rest

Most large publishing houses are closed to so-called unso-

licited submissions (manuscripts not sent to them by agents) So

beore your bookrsquos opening pages receive the scrutiny o a pub-

lishing housersquos executive committee they must pass muster by a

literary agent

Agents receive thousands of manuscripts every year Some re-

ceive tens of thousands In an environment like that itrsquos simply

human nature that they look for ways to quickly get through oneproposal and get on to the next so they can reduce the slush pile

at least a little

Many of their rejections come easily Te author has not fol-

lowed the agencyrsquos writerrsquos guidelines or has sent a non1047297ction pro-

posal to an agent who accepts only 1047297ction But even with those

eliminated the stack of remaining manuscripts towers as high asa rocket on the launch pad

Some agents will read a proposal in the order itrsquos presented

cover letter one-sheet synopsis etc and then head to the sample

chapters Othersmdashthe 1047297ction-lovers mainlymdashwill skip everything

else and turn directly to page 1 of the chapters

At that point yoursquove got about ten seconds to hook this person

Remember shersquos looking for a reason to say no Not because shersquos an

ogre but because shersquos in a hurry She loves 1047297ction and she wants

to love your book and she must 1047297nd new authors to keep her own

business going but there are so many others waiting in linemdashmost

of them she knows will end up being klunkersmdashthat your book al-

ready has two strikes against it by the time she gets to page 1

So your page 1 had better rock

If your opening line manages to not offend her 1047297ction sensibili-

ties and if your opening paragraphs keep her with you shersquoll turn

to page 2 With these early pages yoursquore basically in a moment-by-

moment effort to skirt disaster with the agent or acquisitions edi-

tor Disaster being the rejection of your manuscript If you lose her

in those early pages yoursquove lost her permanently

Itrsquos like poor Westley in Te Princess Bride Every evening his

captor the Dread Pirate Roberts would send him to bed like this

ldquoGood night Westley Good work Sleep well Irsquoll most likely kill you

in the morningrdquo With every line paragraph and page the agent

or editor is most likely going to kill your book in the morning It isyour task to ldquostay aliverdquo as long as possible o the very end if you

can because thatrsquos where glory awaits

Itrsquos not only agents and editors whom you must keep on the

good side of Te same is true of your reader Yoursquore trying to keep a

very busy person from doing one of the hundred things he ought to

be doingmdashor one of the many V shows he wants to be watchingmdashso he will read your book to the end Enough missteps and the spell

will be broken and something else will capture his attention

Years ago I was looking for a new novel to read So I went to

the library and plucked off the new releases shelf ten books that

looked interesting I took them all to a table and opened them one

by one I was looking to be engaged Hooked Arrested by how the

book began Most of them failed utterly Tey began with back-

story exposition or something else utterly dull Or their language

was obtuse showy or any of a hundred other things that soured

the book for me

Granted much of that is subjective and therersquos no way you can

anticipate and please every reader But the point was that I was a

reader wanting to be hooked by the novelrsquos opening and most of

them botched it So I put them all back on the shelf and went home

with the one that grabbed me

What is your situation Have you been told that your open-

ings tend to be weak Do you sense that your whole book has gone

wrong and you have a hunch that it got off course at the outset

Are you paralyzed because you want to start your novel off right

but you donrsquot know how Or maybe yoursquore hoping this book will

write the opening for you

Irsquom like that As I was writing this book I was also in the midst

o changing how I ran the accounting or the small indie press I

ounded Irsquod been running it off a spreadsheet but afer our 1047297rsttwo years the thing had just gotten to be unwieldy It took me a week

every time I had to 1047297gure royalties or pay taxes It was aggravating

So at the recommendation o counselors I decided to transition

rom a spreadsheet to a database (Donrsquot let your eyes glaze overmdashI

really am heading to a point)

I purchased a very good database program and began 1047297g-uring out how to run my publishing company rom it It wasnrsquot

long beore I ended up in a terrible 1047297x I had tapped none o the

strengths o the database and couldnrsquot 1047297gure out how to do any o

the things in a database that the spreadsheet program had done

so easily Irsquod lost way too much time in the effort and I was now

orced to run the business on both a database and the old spread-

sheet It was maddening

So I did what any sensible person would do I went online to

Amazoncom I ound a terri1047297c book on how to master the database

program I was using I read all the reviews and decided to take the

plungemdasheven cashing in an Amazon gif card to do it

Anxiously I waited by the mailbox When would the magical

book come and solve all my problems I could hold on until then

couldnrsquot I

Finally it came I ripped open the smiley ace box and pulled

out the talisman It was indeed a tome Hal the weight o my toddler

daughter I reckoned Surely the answers were here I was saved

I set it on my desk beore my computer monitor and waited

And waited

Slowly it dawned on me that I might have all the answers beore

me but the book wasnrsquot going to solve my problems all by itsel I was

going to have to open that beast and actually read it Read it It was

1300 pages long or crying out loud And a bonus CD with 600 more

pages What had I been thinking Where is my trusty spreadsheet[bangs head on desk]

My wersquove come a long way rom JFK to head-banging havenrsquot

we And in such a short time

Anyway I am saddened to inorm you that wonderul as this

book may be it will not write your 1047297rst 1047297fy pages or you

However i I do my job right this book will energize you withall the electricity o a stirring speech and you will ride the surge o

inspiration all the way through those opening pagesmdashand beyond

Because we choose to go to the moon Not because it is easy but be-

cause it is hard And because as Eugene F Ware said ldquoAll glory

comes rom daring to beginrdquo

bull IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD bullYour novel can have a tremendous launchmdashnot just so agents and

editors will keep reading and not even so readers will stay with you

but so it will be strong as a work o literature Structurally the 1047297rst

1047297fy pages your o book have to accomplish certain objectives or

the oundation will be weak

You have to engage your reader 1047297rst and oremost You have to

introduce your hero You have to establish the context o the story

You must reveal the genre and milieu and story world You have

to set up the tone o the book Yoursquoll also be presenting the stakes

introducing the antagonist establishing the herorsquos desires start-

ing the main characterrsquos inner journey and getting a ticking time

bomb to start ticking down

And you want to do all these things without boring your reader

losing your reader dumping backstory on your reader misleading

your reader insulting your readerrsquos intelligence or tipping your

hand to your reader

script And yet they are in a sense merely the ront work you have to

do to get to the real heart o your story which takes place in Act 2

I recently bought my 1047297rst Kindle e-reader Te box it came in

was itsel the beginning o a storymdashthe tear-off strip or getting in-

side the box actually said ldquoOnce upon a time helliprdquo on it As I lifedthe lid and beheld the masterul presentation o the device so lov-

ingly nestled inside I elt the thrill o beginning a novel I just knew

I was going to love It was an undiscovered country terra incognita

yet a1047297re with possibilities

amples does more than one thing It teaches you how to write

good 1047297ction but it also teaches you how to write good screenplays

I canrsquot speak or you but most o the novelists Irsquove spoken with

over the yearsmdashmysel includedmdashsecretly hope their novels will

be turned into movies Why not make it easy on the producer by

writing a novel that could easily be adapted or the screen And

You may already know a bit about how the publishing process

works You know that a literary agent or an acquisitions editor at

a publishing house will decide the ate o your book based merely

on its opening pages

I you knew how little o a manuscript is read beore a publisher

chooses to accept or reject a book you might be appalled Usually

it is only one person the acquisitions editor who has read the book

rom start to 1047297nish beore a contract is offeredmdashor not All the other

eight or twelve executives have read perhaps only 1047297fy pages o the

trust the editor or the rest

Most large publishing houses are closed to so-called unso-

licited submissions (manuscripts not sent to them by agents) So

beore your bookrsquos opening pages receive the scrutiny o a pub-

lishing housersquos executive committee they must pass muster by a

literary agent

Agents receive thousands of manuscripts every year Some re-

ceive tens of thousands In an environment like that itrsquos simply

human nature that they look for ways to quickly get through oneproposal and get on to the next so they can reduce the slush pile

at least a little

Many of their rejections come easily Te author has not fol-

lowed the agencyrsquos writerrsquos guidelines or has sent a non1047297ction pro-

posal to an agent who accepts only 1047297ction But even with those

eliminated the stack of remaining manuscripts towers as high asa rocket on the launch pad

Some agents will read a proposal in the order itrsquos presented

cover letter one-sheet synopsis etc and then head to the sample

chapters Othersmdashthe 1047297ction-lovers mainlymdashwill skip everything

else and turn directly to page 1 of the chapters

At that point yoursquove got about ten seconds to hook this person

Remember shersquos looking for a reason to say no Not because shersquos an

ogre but because shersquos in a hurry She loves 1047297ction and she wants

to love your book and she must 1047297nd new authors to keep her own

business going but there are so many others waiting in linemdashmost

of them she knows will end up being klunkersmdashthat your book al-

ready has two strikes against it by the time she gets to page 1

So your page 1 had better rock

If your opening line manages to not offend her 1047297ction sensibili-

ties and if your opening paragraphs keep her with you shersquoll turn

to page 2 With these early pages yoursquore basically in a moment-by-

moment effort to skirt disaster with the agent or acquisitions edi-

tor Disaster being the rejection of your manuscript If you lose her

in those early pages yoursquove lost her permanently

in the morningrdquo With every line paragraph and page the agent

or editor is most likely going to kill your book in the morning It isyour task to ldquostay aliverdquo as long as possible o the very end if you

can because thatrsquos where glory awaits

Itrsquos not only agents and editors whom you must keep on the

good side of Te same is true of your reader Yoursquore trying to keep a

very busy person from doing one of the hundred things he ought to

be doingmdashor one of the many V shows he wants to be watchingmdashso he will read your book to the end Enough missteps and the spell

will be broken and something else will capture his attention

Years ago I was looking for a new novel to read So I went to

the library and plucked off the new releases shelf ten books that

looked interesting I took them all to a table and opened them one

by one I was looking to be engaged Hooked Arrested by how the

book began Most of them failed utterly Tey began with back-

story exposition or something else utterly dull Or their language

was obtuse showy or any of a hundred other things that soured

the book for me

Granted much of that is subjective and therersquos no way you can

anticipate and please every reader But the point was that I was a

reader wanting to be hooked by the novelrsquos opening and most of

them botched it So I put them all back on the shelf and went home

with the one that grabbed me

What is your situation Have you been told that your open-

ings tend to be weak Do you sense that your whole book has gone

wrong and you have a hunch that it got off course at the outset

Are you paralyzed because you want to start your novel off right

but you donrsquot know how Or maybe yoursquore hoping this book will

write the opening for you

Irsquom like that As I was writing this book I was also in the midst

o changing how I ran the accounting or the small indie press I

ounded Irsquod been running it off a spreadsheet but afer our 1047297rsttwo years the thing had just gotten to be unwieldy It took me a week

every time I had to 1047297gure royalties or pay taxes It was aggravating

So at the recommendation o counselors I decided to transition

rom a spreadsheet to a database (Donrsquot let your eyes glaze overmdashI

really am heading to a point)

I purchased a very good database program and began 1047297g-uring out how to run my publishing company rom it It wasnrsquot

long beore I ended up in a terrible 1047297x I had tapped none o the

strengths o the database and couldnrsquot 1047297gure out how to do any o

the things in a database that the spreadsheet program had done

so easily Irsquod lost way too much time in the effort and I was now

orced to run the business on both a database and the old spread-

sheet It was maddening

So I did what any sensible person would do I went online to

Amazoncom I ound a terri1047297c book on how to master the database

program I was using I read all the reviews and decided to take the

plungemdasheven cashing in an Amazon gif card to do it

Anxiously I waited by the mailbox When would the magical

book come and solve all my problems I could hold on until then

couldnrsquot I

Finally it came I ripped open the smiley ace box and pulled

out the talisman It was indeed a tome Hal the weight o my toddler

daughter I reckoned Surely the answers were here I was saved

I set it on my desk beore my computer monitor and waited

And waited

Slowly it dawned on me that I might have all the answers beore

me but the book wasnrsquot going to solve my problems all by itsel I was

going to have to open that beast and actually read it Read it It was

1300 pages long or crying out loud And a bonus CD with 600 more

pages What had I been thinking Where is my trusty spreadsheet[bangs head on desk]

we And in such a short time

Anyway I am saddened to inorm you that wonderul as this

book may be it will not write your 1047297rst 1047297fy pages or you

ounded Irsquod been running it off a spreadsheet but afer our 1047297rsttwo years the thing had just gotten to be unwieldy It took me a week

So at the recommendation o counselors I decided to transition

rom a spreadsheet to a database (Donrsquot let your eyes glaze overmdashI

really am heading to a point)

I purchased a very good database program and began 1047297g-uring out how to run my publishing company rom it It wasnrsquot

long beore I ended up in a terrible 1047297x I had tapped none o the

strengths o the database and couldnrsquot 1047297gure out how to do any o

the things in a database that the spreadsheet program had done

so easily Irsquod lost way too much time in the effort and I was now

orced to run the business on both a database and the old spread-

sheet It was maddening

So I did what any sensible person would do I went online to

Amazoncom I ound a terri1047297c book on how to master the database

program I was using I read all the reviews and decided to take the

plungemdasheven cashing in an Amazon gif card to do it

Anxiously I waited by the mailbox When would the magical

book come and solve all my problems I could hold on until then

couldnrsquot I

Finally it came I ripped open the smiley ace box and pulled

out the talisman It was indeed a tome Hal the weight o my toddler

daughter I reckoned Surely the answers were here I was saved

I set it on my desk beore my computer monitor and waited

And waited

Slowly it dawned on me that I might have all the answers beore

me but the book wasnrsquot going to solve my problems all by itsel I was

Agents receive thousands of manuscripts every year Some re-

ceive tens of thousands In an environment like that itrsquos simply

human nature that they look for ways to quickly get through oneproposal and get on to the next so they can reduce the slush pile

at least a little

Many of their rejections come easily Te author has not fol-

lowed the agencyrsquos writerrsquos guidelines or has sent a non1047297ction pro-

posal to an agent who accepts only 1047297ction But even with those

eliminated the stack of remaining manuscripts towers as high asa rocket on the launch pad

Some agents will read a proposal in the order itrsquos presented

cover letter one-sheet synopsis etc and then head to the sample

chapters Othersmdashthe 1047297ction-lovers mainlymdashwill skip everything

else and turn directly to page 1 of the chapters

At that point yoursquove got about ten seconds to hook this person

Remember shersquos looking for a reason to say no Not because shersquos an

ogre but because shersquos in a hurry She loves 1047297ction and she wants

to love your book and she must 1047297nd new authors to keep her own

business going but there are so many others waiting in linemdashmost

of them she knows will end up being klunkersmdashthat your book al-

ready has two strikes against it by the time she gets to page 1

So your page 1 had better rock

If your opening line manages to not offend her 1047297ction sensibili-

ties and if your opening paragraphs keep her with you shersquoll turn

to page 2 With these early pages yoursquore basically in a moment-by-

moment effort to skirt disaster with the agent or acquisitions edi-

tor Disaster being the rejection of your manuscript If you lose her

Itrsquos not only agents and editors whom you must keep on the

good side of Te same is true of your reader Yoursquore trying to keep a

very busy person from doing one of the hundred things he ought to

be doingmdashor one of the many V shows he wants to be watchingmdashso he will read your book to the end Enough missteps and the spell

will be broken and something else will capture his attention

Years ago I was looking for a new novel to read So I went to

so easily Irsquod lost way too much time in the effort and I was now

orced to run the business on both a database and the old spread-

sheet It was maddening

So I did what any sensible person would do I went online to

program I was using I read all the reviews and decided to take the

plungemdasheven cashing in an Amazon gif card to do it

Anxiously I waited by the mailbox When would the magical

book come and solve all my problems I could hold on until then

couldnrsquot I

Finally it came I ripped open the smiley ace box and pulled

out the talisman It was indeed a tome Hal the weight o my toddler

daughter I reckoned Surely the answers were here I was saved

I set it on my desk beore my computer monitor and waited

And waited

Slowly it dawned on me that I might have all the answers beore

me but the book wasnrsquot going to solve my problems all by itsel I was

ounded Irsquod been running it off a spreadsheet but afer our 1047297rsttwo years the thing had just gotten to be unwieldy It took me a week

I purchased a very good database program and began 1047297g-uring out how to run my publishing company rom it It wasnrsquot

long beore I ended up in a terrible 1047297x I had tapped none o the

strengths o the database and couldnrsquot 1047297gure out how to do any o

the things in a database that the spreadsheet program had done

so easily Irsquod lost way too much time in the effort and I was now

orced to run the business on both a database and the old spread-

sheet It was maddening

So I did what any sensible person would do I went online to

Amazoncom I ound a terri1047297c book on how to master the database

program I was using I read all the reviews and decided to take the

plungemdasheven cashing in an Amazon gif card to do it

Anxiously I waited by the mailbox When would the magical

book come and solve all my problems I could hold on until then

couldnrsquot I

Finally it came I ripped open the smiley ace box and pulled

out the talisman It was indeed a tome Hal the weight o my toddler

daughter I reckoned Surely the answers were here I was saved

I set it on my desk beore my computer monitor and waited

And waited

Slowly it dawned on me that I might have all the answers beore
