Reflections on the Sunday Scripture

March 18, 2018

The Fifth Sunday of Lent

Readings:

Jeremiah 31:31-34 Hebrews 5:7-9 John 12:20-33

Gospel Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.

“I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it and will glorify it again.” The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He said this indicating the kind of death he would die.

1. How have you experienced the dying and the harvest of the grain of wheat in your life?

What “grain of wheat” in your life today might fall and die to become more?

2. What is the most powerful or authoritative “law” that God has written on your heart?

(Hint – read #5) When did you find that it is most difficult to be obedient to God in what He has written in your heart?

3. God has now prepared the land (our hearts), and Christ is the seed (the Word of God) Who must die to give us life. “How will we (you) care for the fruit that is grown in our hearts? Will we nourish it? How will you/we nourish it?

4. As we continue Lent, let’s all be a grain of wheat, fall down for God, die for him, and produce much fruit.

5. Can you let God plow away your selfishness and pride and write on your heart the law of Love?

6. Jesus, our God made flesh, seals the new covenant, and as His “Hour” approaches, Jesus will lay down His life for us, His dream for us. Are we ready to fulfill our side of the covenant? Are we ready to live as Jesus and the Church teach us to live?

Tomorrow we celebrate the feast of St. Joseph. St. Joseph has two feast days on the liturgical calendar. March 19th - Joseph, the Husband of Mary. The second is May 1st - Joseph, the Worker.

There is very little about the life of Joseph in Scripture but still, we know that he was the chaste husband of Mary, the foster father of Jesus, a carpenter and a man who was not wealthy. We also know that he came from the royal lineage of King David.

We can see from his actions in scripture that Joseph was a compassionate man, and obedient to the will of God. He also loved Mary and Jesus and wanted to protect and provide for them.

Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus' public life, at his death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph had probably died before Jesus entered public ministry. Joseph is the patron of many things, including the universal Church, fathers, the dying, and social justice.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH (This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.)

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God. I place in you all my interests and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, so that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

O St. Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen.

Going to Church doesn’t

make you a Christian —

any more than standing

in a garage makes you a car.

Weekday Mass Intentions are available....

if you’ve wanted to have a Mass offered for your loved one, but haven’t yet reserved the date,

stop by the Parish Office now to schedule yours. Masses are

open from July thru December.

You can also reserve the weekly Sanctuary Lamp intention.

There is no limit on the number of intentions you can reserve -

regardless of how many you have previously requested for 2018.

“Whatever you do to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you do to Me.”

As Catholics, we study and learn about the birth, life, death and resurrection of Our Lord. Perhaps, few of us place any real importance on these basic concepts of our faith. During Lent, it is good to walk and pray the fourteen Stations of the Cross.

Recently, Society of St. Vincent de Paul Vincentians took time as a group to reflect on the Stations. We discussed how Jesus re-lives His passion and death when people neglect to follow His words expressed above, from Matthew’s Gospel. At St. Vincent dePaul, we encounter neighbors who are weakened and suffering as Jesus was at Calvary. In whatever way we alleviate their pain, we know that we bring comfort, relief & pleasure to Jesus - as well – when we assist a neighbor in need. Instead of responding as Pilate responded to Jesus – condemning Him - we follow Jesus’ words and show love and concern to those who come to us for help.

Lent is the perfect time to reflect on Jesus’ death on His Holy Cross as he tells us we should not weep for Him but rather weep for the suffering poor. Next week’s collection on March 25th will go a long way toward enabling us to look forward to Jesus’ glorious Resurrection on Easter Sunday so that we all may have life in His Name. May you share a beautiful and blessed Easter with your families. God bless you for your generosity!

Please make your check out to St. Mark rather than to St. Vincent de Paul.

Eucharistic Adoration Come before Jesus, seek Him, adore Him, listen to Him.

Here at St. Mark’s, YOU have the opportunity to spend some time before

the Blessed Sacrament every Tuesday morning. Adoration in the Chapel

begins immediately after the 8:30 AM Mass until noon each week.

Consider spending a little of your morning here with Jesus for the most peaceful

and satisfying hour of the week and see the change it will make in your life!

“The greatest love story

of all time is contained

in a tiny white Host.”

— Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

“A thousand years of enjoying human glory

is not worth even an hour spent

communing with Jesus in the

Blessed Sacrament.”

— Saint Padre Pio

On Saturday, March 3rd, Deacon John officiated at the annual

Blessing of the Motorcycles held here at St. Mark’s.

Cycle riders know that safety extends beyond a well-maintained bike,

they believe that Divine protection is just as important.

Sponsored by “The Village Nomads” and this year co-sponsored by the

local chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association, the ceremony

expressed the importance of Jesus in their lives as well as recalling those members who had passed during the past year, either from illness or accident. Blessed decals and pins were distributed as well.

As Deacon John reminded everyone, “Today is special. We come together

to enjoy God’s blessings and to have safe journeys.”

We are currently in need of usher support thru our peak months of

January - May. Acting as an usher takes less than 2 hrs. per weekend.

Duties include: greet and welcome parishioners into church, help

parishioners to find a seat, take up collections, direct the Eucharist procession, distribute bulletins,

assist the handicapped as needed.

To join our team and register for the next round of training, please contact Jed Hayden,

Ministry Coordinator, at 775-4279 or email [email protected].

Automatic Bank Payments for Offertory Contributions

The office quite often receives inquiries from parishioners regarding

on-line donations. While we do not offer e-giving or on-line

donations, you may consider another option. You can save yourself

time and effort by setting up automatic payments with your

financial institution for your offertory contributions to St. Mark the

Evangelist. The process is as follows:

You need to be enrolled for on-line banking with your financial

institution, which is free of charge.

Organize authorization with your financial institution to make

weekly or monthly payments to St. Mark the Evangelist.

Provide your financial institution with your 4-digit Parishioner ID

Number. (This is the same number which is printed on your

offertory envelopes.) If you are unsure of your ID number,

please contact the parish office.

In the memo section of the bank check, please identify where the

money is going, i.e. Weekly Offertory, St. Vincent dePaul,

special collections, etc.

Your bank will send your contribution directly to St. Mark for

posting in our ledger. There is no charge for this service. Please

note that this can only be done from your savings or checking

account, not your credit card. Most banks offer this service.

You will need to contact your financial institution if you are

interested in setting up this payment method. Please let our

office know if you no longer require bi-monthly sets of

Is Small Christian Community for you?

A Small Christian Community (SCC) is a group of parishioners

who meet weekly to reflect on the scriptures, share insights into the Word of God and bear witness to

God’s presence in our lives, and for the purpose for evangelizing our FAITH.

At St. Mark the Evangelist, there are currently ten such groups

comprised of anywhere from six to fifteen men and/or women.

Some of the groups are all women, some all men and some mixed.

If you would like to consider participation in a

Small Christian Community, please contact

Antoinette or Ken Kelly at 259-8672.

Twenty-three activity pages - including clergy, staff, ministry groups and special highlights over the past 5 years were designed and submitted to Lifetouch Photography on March 10th. A proof book will be delivered to St. Mark within 3 weeks from the submission date. Final review and sign-off will take place the first week of April.
