A BRIEF GUIDE TO LIFE

(Written by LEO BABAUTA)

‘A few strong instincts and a few plain rules suffice us.’ - Ralph WaldoEmerson

Life can be ridiculously complicated, if you let it. I suggest we sim-plify.Thich Nhat Hanh’s quote, which I love most, is the shortest guide tolife you’ll ever need:“Smile, breath, and go slowly.”If you live your life by those five words, you’ll do pretty well. Forthose who need a little more guidance, I’ve distilled the lessons I’velearned (so far) into a few guidelines, or reminders, really. And as always, these rules are meant to be broken. Life wouldn’t beany fun if they weren’t.The brief guide:less TV, more readingless shopping, more outdoorsless rush, more slownessless consuming, more creatingless junk, more real foodless busywork, more impactless driving, more walkingless noise, more solitudeless focus on the future, more on the presentless work, more playless worry, more smilesbreathe. ª

Mid-AutumnFestival

in Vietnam

“At mid – autumn festival,

Walk around with lanterns lit

Take them all across the town,

Singing to the autumn moon…”

In Mid-Autumn Festival, children parade on the streets, while singing and carrying colorful lanterns of differentsizes. Some of the popular shapes include fishes, stars, but-terflies and a lantern that spins when a candle is inserted, representing the earth circling the sun.

Traditionally, people usually offer boxes of moon cakes, which are very rich in taste to their relatives or belovedones on this occasion. The cakes are filled with lotus seeds,g r o u n dbeans and or-ange peelsand have abright yokein the centerto representthe moon.

Today, Mid-Autumn Festival promotes education, poetry, dance and arts and crafts. Mid-Autumn Festival is a won-derful opportunity for parents to share their children'sjoy, and a great opportunity for family gathering too! ª

ERIN HENDERSON fromadoptvietnam.org

Tet Trung Thu, as it is known by the Viet-namese, or Mid-Autumn Festival as we referto it in English, is a wonderful, ancient festival

that involves children.

Mid-Autumn Festival (Tet Trung Thu) dates back asfar as 15-20,000 years ago in Southeast Asia, and istraditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the 8thLunar Month. This year (2011), Mid-Autumn Festivalfalls on September 12th. It is one of the two mostpopular festivals in Vietnam, and has been importantto families in Vietnam for many years.

It is said that originally, Mid-Autumn Festival cameabout as a way for parents to make up for lost timewith their children after the harvest season. The har-

vest was fin-ished bySeptember,(August in theLunar calen-dar) and theparents wereanxious tospend timewith their

children and do something special with them, as wellas celebrate the harvest, after spending much timeworking hard. It was held under the full moon, whichrepresents fullness and prosperity of life.

Otsukimi – moon

viewing in Japan

Otsukimi means enjoying the view of the moon. Italso refers to the night of August 15th (Jugoya)according to the old Japanese calendar. The Jugoya

moon is called the harvest moon and has long been knownas a good time for admiring the moon. On this night, an altaris set up in a place where the moon is visible and offerings ofdumplings, pampas grass, and potatoes are made. The customof viewing the harvest moon came to the nobility of Japanfrom China and spread to samurai and townspeople. Farmersknew the farming seasons through the waxing and waning ofthe moon. They were able to work in the fields until late atnight thanks to the moonlight. The custom of Otsukimi tookroot out of gratitude to the moon. As a result, crops harvestedduring this period came to be associated with Imomeigetsu(the potato harvest festival) as well.

Otsukimi on the night of the 13th day ofthe lunar monthWhen we think of Otsukimi, Jugoya usually comes to mind. However, the moon on the 13th day of the 9th month of theold lunar calendar (Jusanya) is thought to be quite beautiful. The custom of viewing the moon on this day remains in manyareas to this day. The practice of only viewing either Jugoyaor Jusanya is called “katatsukimi” and is to be avoided. Viewingboth moons has long been considered favorable.

Why is the date for Otsukimi differenteach year?Otsukimi is held according to the old Japanese calendar.Since the dates of the old Japanese calendar are decidedaccording to the waxing and waning of the moon, thenew moon becomes the first day of the month. The cur-rent western calendar uses a different system, so the dateof the harvest moon differs each year. In addition, the

harvest moon is not always afull moon.

The legend of theRabbit on the MoonIn Japan, people say that arabbit lives on the moon andpounds rice cakes, but thiswas originally a myth fromIndia. In every part of the

world, there are myths and legends associated with themoon. In Japan, it is said that the dark parts of the surfaceof the moon resemble a rabbit pounding rice cakes. How-ever, people of other nationalitiesor ethnic groups have a differentway of looking at this pattern. Forexample, in Europe, it is the pro-file of a woman's face. In China, itis a crab or an alligator. This year, 2011, Jugoya is on Sep-tember 12th, and Jusanya is onOctober 9th.

Enjoy gazing at the beautiful autumn moon while eatingdumplings and singing.

"The Rabbit Song"Rabbit, rabbit, what are looking at?Hop, look at the Jugoya harvest moon, hop! ª

“If you have a dream, do your best to make it come true.Don’t hesitate to do it when you have youth and health, oryou will regret”, shared Bich Hai. She is a junior at our uni-versity and a sophomore at Ho Chi Minh City Conservatoryof Music. She accepted to exchange her own enjoyment oflife for her passion. This week we had a chance to talk toher to explore how she can pursue her dream.”

1. When did your passion begin?I have taken part in many singing contests, but my passionhas strongly risen since the failure of the contest at Grade9. I felt upset and uncomfortable, so I decided to studymusic without my parents’ support. I studied that subjectin secret for 3 years at high school.

2. So why did you choose HCMC Open Univer-sity (OU) instead of Conservatory of Ho ChiMinh City (CM)?Well, it was by accident. Firstly, I took the exam to enterCM, but I failed because of unawareness of the regulation.OU was just my second option; however, I still nurturedmy passion. That’s why I continued to cover up my musicstudy from my parents. With my teacher’s encouragement,I passed the test on music with the high result to be a stu-dent of CM.

3. After succeeding in entering CM, you’ve beena student of 2 universities, so difficulties are un-avoidable. Could you tell some and how youdealt with them? The first difficulty was time. I had to balance time betweenOU and CM. After classes at OU, I had just 15 minutes totravel to CM. The time was so limited that I could not haveenough time to eat, so I got serious problem with myhealth.

Losing contact with friends wasthe second problem. I just fo-cused on my study so much thatI did not have time to chat withfriends, to hang out and to takepart in social activities. I reallyfelt lonely. Sometimes I cried. :)

Once sadness invaded mymind, I rode bicycle around thecity and sang to drive it off invain. I decided to go to akaraoke bar alone, which madepeople there very surprised. Isang until I got tired.

4. With such problems, why don’t you stop your studyat OU so as to pursue your passion? There are 3 reasons. First, my family does not allow me to dothat. Second, my teachers at CM advised that I should finish my

study at OU before pursuingmy own strong passion. Thelast one is that I myself need tohave a stable future. I, there-fore, chose to reserve my re-sult at CM so that I couldconcentrate on my study atOU. After that, I will surely goon my passion. I have per-formed every night at somebars to remind myself not toforget my desire.5. Your attempt is ab-

solutely great and admirable! Do you have any wordsto tell other students?I just want to tell other students that if you have a dream, doyour best to make it come true. Don’t hesitate to do it whenyou have youth and health, or you will regret.

Thank you for this interesting conversation. ª

THE UNCOMPLETED

TOWER

AND TRANSLATORS

Once upon a time, all of people spoke only one language. One day, everyone talked over building a tower being high tothe sky. That tower was named Babel. It was getting more towering and towering, and nearly reached the blue sky.God saw the problem and worried about it very much. He thought and thought a lot; and eventually, he got a solution.

By means of magic, God made people talk with different languages. Human beings, for this reason, could not understandeach other any more. Tower of Babel was uncompleted forever. The above mythology proclaims us the great obstacle of language barrier. Mankind, however, did not give up communicatingon account of God’s language divisiveness. A group of people grew and became the bridge of languages between the countries, and nations. Those were translators, or interpreters. Since then, one profession was born as a result: translating job.Besides being master of languages, the interpreters or translators have to be expert in culture and have the ability to flexiblydeal with a lot of unexpected circumstances. Let’s begin to take the itinerary into the world of the translating profession inorder to discover what interpreters’ or translators’ necessary skills are. Among a large number of skills, they need to have:

1. A wide anddeep fund ofknowledge ofculture and soci-ety, especially of acountry having thelanguage they wantto study. They shouldgenerally read agreat deal of transla-tions of many kindsof texts because

translation work needs the initiative knowledge. To developthis skill, they have to have a thorough grasp of differencesin culture, how to use idioms, and communication of thetarget language.2. An ability of adapting themselves to new surround-ings very well, quickly updating information and promot-ing confidence in communication in order to catch thecomprehensive knowledge of the native and target lan-guage.3. The honesty, objectiveness and high accuracyin working. These are necessary factors in ensuring the ac-curacy of the target language.

4. The skill at writing smoothly and correctly withsource and target language. They need, therefore, to master alot of writing styles. The techniques and principles of editorialwork also provide translators with much more valuable preparedmaterials.5. The skill atlistening flu-ently both na-tive and targetlanguage. Theyshould, in addi-tion, be keen ong a t h e r i n gphrases, idiomsand technicalvocabulary aswell as knowingtheir usages.6. A thorough knowledge of different speaking andexpressing styles of all classes in society of two languages.7. A capacity of selecting and organizing information. All the available information is not always used to translate inmost cases.

8. The good skill at working in groups.Through it, they will practice their languagemore permanently and will become confidentin communicating.9. A formof transla-tion whichis suitableto theirability andhobby inorder thatthey can have a non-stop improvementof it. Translating is also an occupation. If hav-ing passion, accordingly, they will produce thebest products and will have responsibility totheir work.Translation or interpretation is the key used toopen the mutual knowledge of people who donot share the same languages. Thus translatorsand interpreters need to use the above skills ingood ways as well as having a sentimental andopen-minded heart to be an invisible bridgeacross all borders. ª

After 2-hour debate, participants came to anagreement that Facebook is agnostic – neithergood nor bad, banning Facebook or any other so-cial networking website does not solve any prob-lem in the society. It merely emphasizes ourexisting social and psychological conditionswhether those con-ditions are destruc-tive or creative.

Debate: SHOULD FACEBOOK

BE BANNED?

Facebook is a social networking website intended to connect friends, family, and business associates. It is the largest of the net-working sites and has expanded to anyone who expect to connect with their friends, relatives, or with other people from dif-ferent countries around the world. In Vietnam, Facebook is more and more popular. However, it makes extreme arguments

that “Should Facebook be banned?” due to some controversial issues in the society not only in Vietnam but also all over the world.

That’s the reason why a debate on this topic was held, in which some students majoring in English took part. The writer would liketo invite readers to read some of their opinions:

YES, I THINK FACEBOOK SHOULD BE BANNED. NO, IT SHOULD NOT BE BANNED!

Users waste their time in chatting, updating status, commenting, arguing in some unnecessary issues, es-pecially in "like-collecting" contests (You will be awinner if your photo or your essays get the most Like)

Facebook could harm moral values (such as lack offace-to-face communication/ interactions; emotiondevelopment is badly be affected, causing jealousyand information deprivation disorder).

Facebook uses users' real bio-data to empower thecompany's online transaction power (money makingpurposes), some Facebook functions infringe user'sprivacy.

Facebook provides a free platform for inmates tothreaten victims (see how the California Departmentof Corrections and Rehabilitation prevents this threatby deleting FB's prisoners' accounts at article “Cali-fornia now reports Prisoner Facebook accounts fordeletion”). In addition, it may support for riots toharm the society.

Wasting time just reflects one’s weak skill in time management and self-management. They are outsiders; one can decide whether he or she shouldget involved in them or not. However, why can’t we consider helpful functions of Facebook?- It allows users to connect with long-lost friends and current ones.- Users can keep in better touch with their family, especially kids and grand-children.- Users can quickly find information of contests, conferences, bootcamps,sales-off.- Facebook allows groups of like-minded people to form more easily.

However, at individual level, FB helps to boost self-esteem, allowingindividual to discover his/her positive self.

We must admit that Facebook provides a free platform encouragingpeople to share knowledge/ information with friends as well as re-ceiving supports/ encouragement from friends.

At the same time, Facebook is a free platform to provide the most trust-worthy and instant messages/ news for people from all walks of life aswell as to call for righteous actions/ relief efforts (Japan, Haiti, New Zealandeathquakes, the call for peaceful protest in Vietnam, and cleanup activitiesafter the London riots etc.). The most obvious evidence is the successfulrevolution of Egypt and Lybia with a great support from the revolutionarywave on Facebook.Facebook itself does not create riots, it merely transmits them betweenlike-minded people.
