The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is “folk” music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic “folk” music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. The Minstrel will be presenting a special screening of the documentary film “Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune.” Directed by Ken Bowser, the film gives a biography of the iconic singer and songwriter of the ‘60’s with interviews and commentaries by Joan Baez, Billy Bragg, Tom Hayden and others. The film will be introduced by Phil’s sister, Sonny Ochs, who will be available after the viewing for a Q&A session, and back stories and details not covered in the film.

Fri., 5/4: Phil Ochs Song NightAn all-star cast consisting of Kim & Reggie Harris, Magpie, John Flynn, Joe Jencks, Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor will perform The Songs of Phil Ochs. Phil was one of the seminal figures of the 60’s Folk movement and penned dozens of classics that live today in the hearts of fans and performers alike. The evening will be hosted by Phil’s sister, Sonny Ochs, who is still an active figure in the folk community. The performers will also include some of their own songs, and Sonny will add historical and biographical notes to put these songs in the context of the era and the times.

Fri., 5/11: Open StageThis is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We’ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. Friday, 5/18: Frank & Hank, Bill GrieseAn eclectic mix of music from bluegrass to jazz to standards comes from the agile musical minds of Folk Project members Frank Sole and Hank (Hen3ry) Nerenberg. Frank is a skilled guitartist both in lead flatpicking styles and in Django-inspired jazz. Hen3ry (the 3 is silent) has one of the widest ranging musical minds in the Project, and is a genius at innovative and appropriate arrangement. They were a big hit opening for Frank Vignola at the Minstrel last October. Our opening act is Bill Griese, a singer/songwriter with a traditional folk-rock approach, Bill delivers warm, smooth vocals and a relaxed pick-less guitar style playing introspective original material or refreshingly unexpected covers. A real charmer.

Nancy and Russ Kelner spent a recent weekend in Bucks County where they attended the monthly meeting of the Bucks County Folk Song Society on a Sunday night. After a song circle, the evening ended with several small instrumental and vocal circles. Nancy and Russ said together, “We had a great time.”

Lindsey Meyer celebrated her son Wyatt’s 22nd birthday at a Bruce Springsteen concert. Lindsey said, “The music was great, Bruce put on quite a show.” In a parallel Bruce encounter, Lois DeRitter recently enjoyed a visit to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, viewing the current Springsteen exhibit: ‘From Asbury Park to the Promised Land.’

Elizabeth Lachowicz spent a recent weekend in a convent, visiting her sister, “Sister Frances”. They had a lot of fun and enjoyed their sisterly reunion.

Mike Agranoff recently got a tour of the Steinway Piano factory in Queens. He said, “It was really interesting. I now know why those Steinways cost so much!”

Pam Robinson, Bob Safranek and Mike Agranoff attended a private screening in NYC of ‘Rocky Mountain Express’, the Imax movie that Connie Crawford consulted on. Pam said, “Wow, it was stunning, with amazing scenery and great history. It even had a rainbow!”

Siobhan Scully decided to change her major from ‘equine studies’ to ‘large animal science.’ This summer, she’ll be working full time on a farm. (Tip: It’ll be impolite to hold your nose when you hear the details of what she’ll be shoveling.) And, while Mark Schaffer was out of town on April 2, Siobhan visited his mother to celebrate her 92nd birthday… Mark couldn’t be there because he and Robin were away in Florida, meeting up with Robin’s siblings to surprise Robin’s mom with an 80th birthday party.

Carl enjoyed a recent performance at the People’s Voice Coffeehouse with Gathering Time and FP members Toby Fagenson and Mara Levine. “Great music,” says Carl!

Bob McNally recently sat in ‘the Conductor’s Circle’ as the Philadelphia Orchestra performed Ravel’s Bolero at the Kimmel Center. Bob quoted a review saying, “Sitting so close to the musicians should appeal to anyone who appreciates intensity and passion.” Bob said, “It was unbelievable!”

Folk Project Board Meeting • April 2012

Board Meeting: The Summary

The monthly meeting of the Folk Project Board...was called to order at 8:01 pm on April 3, 2012 at the home of Mark and Robin Schaffer in Rockaway. Due to four “new business” items on the agenda, President Eddie kept the meeting moving at a good clip and nobody fell off the wagon.

Present were Pat Brangs, Lois DeRitter, Jim Gartner, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Bob McNally, Ed Roffman, and Bobbie Rosengarten (Trustees); Mike Agranoff, Carl Croce, Howie Goldman, Joe Graziano, Lindsey Meyer, Sandy Reilly, Pam Robinson, Mark Schaffer, Robin Schaffer, Jean Scully, and Rachel Streich and Leigh Walker (Other Board Members). Absent were Nancy Dugan, Allan Kugel, Scooter Ferguson, Gloria Friedman, Nancy Kelner, Kevin Redden, and Scott Ross.

There were three corrections to the March minutes, which were then approved as amended. Treasurer Rachel Streich reported that she received a generous check from an anonymous donor to be applied toward scholarships for Spring Festival 2012. Our financial ship is in good shape. In new business:

• Minstrel chair Mike Agranoff received a request from Scott Alarik to booktalk his newly-published folk music novel for no charge to the Project. Festival chairs Mark and Robin will approach him about doing a workshop at spring festival.

• Board secretary Lindsey Meyer moved to create a limited access section of the FP Board wiki that would be accessible to the president and secretary. They would have discretion to create a second limited access area for other Board members. (The wiki is currently accessible to anyone.) In future, documents that are archived on individuals’ computers can be shared with Board members who have a “need to know.” Editing capabilities will continue to be restricted. The motion passed.

• Mark Schaffer presented a proposal to use some of our cash reserves to increase audience numbers at several of our venues by allowing committee chairs to take relatively greater risks without fear of financial repercussions. He then moved to authorize Swingin’ Tern, the Minstrel, and Special Concerts to invest $2,000 each, from the general funds, to increase their attendance. After much discussion, the motion passed.

• Robin Schaffer proposed forming an ad hoc group to brainstorm ways to build our FP community with the goal of finding ways to improve the social aspects of our group. Following positive response from the Board, she’ll move forward with this project after Festival.

In committee reports:

• Festival co-chairs Robin & Mark Schaffer reported that staff is set for the spring festival and the workshop schedule is posted on the website. Although pre-registration spots went like hotcakes, the actual registration has been somewhat slow. 145 people have registered, leaving 35 spaces which have now been opened up to the waiting list. Jay Ungar and Molly MasonSince joining forces in the late 1970s, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene. With their comfortable sense of fun and their love of the music, they make each concert a musical journey — sometimes spanning two continents and two centuries. Their incomparable warmth, wit and consummate musicianship have delighted audiences worldwide. Their performance of Jay’s haunting Ashokan Farewell, featured on Ken Burns’ Civil War, earned the couple international acclaim and an Emmy.

The Shockenaw Mountain BoysAn acoustic subset of nationally renowned Railroad Earth, their high-energy improvisations and impressive vocals on traditional and original songs were an all-time highlight of our Minstrel concert series. Tim Carbone on fi ddle and Andy Goessling on guitar and banjo gained Jersey fame in the Blue Sparks from Hell are joined by John Skehan on mandolin and Johnny Grubb on bass.

Annie and the HedonistsAnchored by Annie Rosen’s incomparable voice, The Hedonists delight audiences with jazz, swing, blues, folk and bluegrass, with honky- tonk country thrown in for good measure. Jonny Rosen on guitar, multi-instrumentalist Peter Davis and bassist Don Young provide the harmonies,

the top-notch arrangements, and the good times that’s made them FP Fest favorites.

Scott AlarikScott is the author of “Revival: A Folk Novel,” a love story set in the subterranean world of modern folk music. He will host our Friday night round robin, run our FP Book Club on Sunday, and MC our Sunday concert.

Matthew BroadyMatt is a singer/songwriter with a touch of soul, a hint of funk and a strong folk/Americana streak. His songs are real stories about everyday people and the extraordinary circumstances that life throws at them.

Julie EdelstonJulie has a beautiful voice, a winning stage presence and a lot of natural and cultivated talent. You’ll hear powerful renditions of rock, pop, and indie songs, and some memorable originals.

Diane PerryDiane will be teaching technique and phrasing for vocalists and instrumentalists. She is a popular jazz, blues and bebop vocalist and violinist, with a mature vision, a smoky sound and a tastefully-informed melodic sense.
