Heartiest congratulations to our young winner EMMA BENNET from Byford Night club proving once again you do not have to be a large club to win. Also, congratulations to the runner-up JULIE CLARK from Ellenbrook and 3rd place MARGARET PAMMETER from Dianella. Very well-done ladies. (All winners in another section of this newsletter.) SUNSHINE SLIMMERS GERALDTON Hello again from our wonderful city of sunny Geraldton. I’m terribly sorry that there was no newsletter last month , and if I’m completely honest , time got away from me as I was going to Perth that week our newsletter was due, and with everything happening to organise that trip it completely slipped my mind, so please accept my apology. Our Slimmer of the Year has been announced and the lovely Dympna Kipps was our winner with a 20-kilo loss. Congratulations Dympna. Our luncheon will be on Thursday 9th May. We have had a number of ladies with consistent weight loss so congratulations to you all. We have a number of raffles running at present in preparation for Our Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday 30th May. All our ladies are very generous in donating items or vouchers towards this event. We have also received our Weight Watchers Federation of W.A. Raffle tickets and these have been handed out to our members. We had a guest speaker in Pia Richardson talking on Hypnotherapy which is an alternative and holistic service. She spoke on the different aspects of helping people with anxiety, sleeping disorders, smoking, obsessive compulsive disorder, fear of flying and much more. It was extremely interesting and enjoyed by all members. Hoping everybody had a wonderful Easter and we didn’t indulge in too many Easter eggs. Till next time Regards Pat Underwood Secretary

BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS A number of our members attended the Slimmer of the Year luncheon last weekend, so I’ll start by congratulating all the nominees and especially the winners on their amazing achievements. Belmont’s slimmer, Pam, lost 13.5 kilos and has set a great example. She’s now joined the Grads – and speaking of the Grads, Jean H, Jean C, Barb, Joyce and Maggie have all maintained their goal weights for a year. Well done! April is AGM time and also time for the annual awards. The Phil Hicks Trophy went to Anne while the President’s Trophy was shared by two members, Sue and Joyce. A full committee is also now on board for another year. Without the committee and the many willing volunteers, our club would probably cease to exist. A big thank you to everyone who supports us with their time and energy! Back to the everyday: Gail was February’s Queen of the Month and Maggie Grad of the Month. Maureen received a Gold Star for her 3-month loss and Joyce was both monthly and 3-monthly Grad. Joyce also received the Grad of the Year trophy for an amazing 6th year in a row! Happy Birthday to Julie M, Sylvia, Bev, Ros T-B and Clare.

During May and June, Biggest Morning Tea events will be held all over Australia with Belmont’s happening on 7 May. With 130,000 people diagnosed this year, I can’t think of anyone whose life hasn’t been touched by cancer. Many other WW members will be attending or hosting events.

Funds raised support some of the following services: · free accommodation for 5,305 country patients and carers · 1,921 wigs, turbans, hats and scarves provided to patients · $3.7 million towards research While you enjoy your tea and scones or coffee and cake and know that your donation will make a real difference in the fight against this dreadful disease.

ESPERANCE WEIGHT WATCHERS Queen of the Month with 2.8 kg off was Carol, Lady of the Month with 1.8 kg off was Fran Holman. Our bingo competition was great fun, Lauren our weight recorder was the first one to get a full house, she also has our Football Competition underway. Consisting of 6 teams of 4 members. Also attached to the email is a couple of photos of our President Marlene with how far she has gone with her weight loss. 112 kg Size 24 now down to 79 kg and size 14/16. Marlene is proof that you can do it. We had St John Ambulance come to our club to give our members a refresher course on how to use a defibrillator, now there are 90 devices distributed around Esperance. It was very rewarding to learn from the course. That is all for now from Esperance until next time. Kind Regards Jeanette Secretary

DIANELLA WEIGHT WATCHERS

Our president Claire recently came across an interesting website “The Healthy Eating Hub" from a nutritionist “Kate Freeman”. Over the past several weeks we have discussed many topics from this site. For those who were nominated for Slimmer of the Year, we all congratulate you all, but we are all especially proud our member - Margaret who came 3rd place. She is a wonderful example of what can be achieved. We recently had a taste of winter during the Easter break, I know I will be planning on making soup for the weekends to ease the “what’s for dinner” and help for lunches at work. At Dianella we have an evening of soup tasting where some members bring in their favourite soup for all to taste. We have this evening scheduled for June and is enjoyed by all. Recipes and cooking tips are also shared. We hope everyone had a good Easter and only a little indulgence of those Easter eggs and hot cross buns. Cheers till next time, Carol.

BUSSLETON WASPS Hello everyone. Just lit our fire for the first time this year. Shivered through last evening so was determined to be more organised today and loaded up the wheelbarrow with wood ready. What beautiful Easter weather. We are so lucky to living in this beautiful part of WA. Our ladies were all smiling last meeting. We all did well. And to add to our joy, three ex members have returned to the fold. They just can't keep away for long, as we are such scintillating good company. Think we know all the weight loss jokes there are to know and a couple of us have quite a repertoire of other jokes too!! In between the jocularity, we do have discussions about foods and the latest trends in diets. Basically, though we all know the right attitude to adopt when deciding what and what not to eat. It is a mind set and once you have found what works for you it's determination which will set you on the right path. New ways in cooking vegetables are quite a revolution too. Even cauliflower is now a highly sort after ingredient. Our President has received the raffle books and we will be distributing them when we return for our meeting after the school holidays on Wednesday May 1st. Exit from Busselton tomorrow will need patience as the crowds return home. Anzac Day on Thursday has encouraged a few privileged folks to extend their stay by a few days giving them a longer break. Every accommodation venue was booked out over Easter which will be a plus for our fair City. All those eating places offering their wares with tantalising smells wafting on the breeze is enough to make anyone want to stay! The only smells coming from my place just now are special Great Dane ones and they are too hard to describe! Bye for now. Good luck on your scales next week. Regards Valerie (hon sec)

A HEALTHY GROCERY TROLLEY

Column by Annette Sym

What you put in your supermarket trolley will either make or break your healthy eating plan for the week. If it’s not in the fridge or pantry, you can’t eat it!

A healthy grocery trolley means healthy food for the week. So, before you think about heading out to do the grocery shopping, sit down and plan what you’ll eat for the week. Then use your menu plan to write your shopping list. If you’re not sure what you should be eating, use the 28-day menu plans in Symply Too Good To Be True Book 5 or Book 6.

Here are my tips to help you navigate the supermarket aisles:

Start fresh. Load up your trolley with fresh fruit and veggies. Remember the healthy dinner plate? Your trolley needs to resemble it.

Choose lean meat. Why pay for the white stuff (fat) on the edge of the steak if you’re going to cut if off anyway? When looking at mince, choose the premium option. Choose skinless chicken breast and lean pork. Limit lamb as this is the fattiest cut of meat.

Don’t forget the fish. We should be including at least two fish meals a week.

Whole grains are best. I like the Tip Top 9 Grain bread. Look for the words ‘whole grain’ in the ingredient list on products.

Which cereal? Choose a cereal that contains at least 3 grams of fibre per serve. Weet-Bix, Sultana Bran and natural muesli are good choices as are rolled oats.

Opt for low fat dairy. Skim milk is best and choose the lowest fat cheese you can find. When it comes to yoghurt I prefer the Forme no fat brand.

Avoid the lolly, biscuit and soft drink aisles. Don’t include these items in your trolley for other members of the family if you know they will derail you in a moment of weakness.

Choose unsalted nuts. I prefer natural almonds but cashews and macadamias are good choices too. Remember these must be portion controlled; never eat straight from the bag.

Choose low fat margarine. I use Flora Light in my recipes; Nuttelex Lite is also suitable.

Compare labels. If you’re not sure which food is the healthiest option compare the nutritional panel. The column per 100ml or 100g column is best for comparisons - to keep it simple, just look at total calories and total fat and choose the lowest one.

And finally, never shop when hungry. Shopping on an empty stomach may result in all the wrong foods ending up in the trolley and the shopping budget will be blown too.

Saying NO once in the supermarket, means you don’t have to say NO 100 times at home.

New Wanneroo Weight Watchers sent in this article -

My name is Alexander, I am a cardiologist and a paramedic, and I have a very important warning for those who wake up at night to go to the bathroom ... You must be careful with the “One-and-a-Half-minute law” that is scientifically proven by waking up suddenly. You hear that someone was well in health and died suddenly during the night without reason. The most likely reason is that when that person woke up to go to the bathroom, she got up from bed in a hurry and because right now the brain needs greater blood flow, for having rested, the lack of blood flow brings on a state of fainting and his is when the stroke happens ... In this case, it is recommended to learn the" One-and-a-Half-minute law" that can" save When you wake up to go to the bathroom, you must first: " lie down for 30 seconds after waking up" and then "sit in bed for 30 more seconds", lower your legs quietly and "sit on the end of bed for another 30 seconds " and only then get up to go to the bathroom. With these steps the chances are gigantic to survive a sudden stroke, regardless of age ... Share with all your family and friends. Remember that you can save yours and the lives of many people sharing this information ...

*Prevention is better than healing*

Water effect on the body We know that water is important, but you never knew the right time to drink! Did you know drinking water in the correct time maximizes the effectiveness of the human body? 1 Glass of water after waking up, helps activate internal organs ... 1 Glass of water 30 minutes before meal helps digestion. 1 Glass of water before showering helps lower blood pressure. 1 Glass of water before sleeping avoids stroke or heart attack.

When someone shares something important with you, take advantage of this and share with more people.
