Director's NotesIn the summer of 1993, a group of fr~nds in Federal Way who shared a love of the choral art met to form a community

choir. The Chorale is concerned with the heavy schedules of many of its members. Consequently, only two major con-certs are scheduled each year; one during the Christmas season and the other in late Spring. Members are selected throughan open audition twice a year; on the last Saturday of August and the second Saturday of January. Basically, the focus is

Because of calendar conflicts, our 1999 Christmasconcert featuring Handel's Messiah" will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. We're excited about singing in thisnew sanctuary and hope you willjoin us there on December 11th and 12th. Johann Sebastian Bach, 7685-7750Today, Bach is considered to be one ofthe Greatest composers in musical history. Every student of music had to memorize

facts about the "Three B's"; Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. We should recognize just who Bach was during his lifetime; avery gifted church musician who wrote more than 300 cantatas during his life for his own church choir. Many of thesebeautiful cantatas were lost and only one was printed during his lifetime; he was ~ father of twenty children; a respectedgentleman happy with his state in life who had no desire to leave his beloved country. In fact Bach never traveled morethan 100 miles from his home. It should also be noted that many great musiciansof our day feel no day can be completewithout hearing or playing Bach. The great cellist Pablo Casals, stated that he began each day by playing Bach; "otherwisemy life would not be complete." We would not be complete without tasting the experience of Bach as well. This Spring weare fortunate to be able to perform this beautiful Easter cantata remembering that Bach, the church musician, wrote pri-marily for his own church choir. We hope you enjoy Bach's cantata "Christ lag in;Todesbanden."

Cantata IV Christ lag in TodesbandenThis cantata, written in 1708, is believed to be one of Bach's earliest. It's counterpoint "voices" can be heard through-

out. The text is taken from a Martin Luther poem in its entirety. :The cantata opens with an extended sinfonia that sets a grave mood. The chorus which follows maintains this mood

with a grand and profound fugal sound. This is really glorious stuff! The opening movements are followed by twopairs of duets separated by and ending with chorus. :

Bach always signed his works with the phrase Soli Deo Gloria! "ToGod alone be the praiser This is our wish as well.

Randall Thompson, 7899-7984Randall Thompson, an eminent American composer, was educated at Harvard University (MA 1922). Mr. Thompson

held a fellowship in Rome from 1922-1925, and held numerous professorships and received numerous awards andhonorary doctoral degrees from American colleges and universities, induding Yale, Harvard and the New EnglandConservatory of Music. We are happy to celebrate the lOath anniversary of this great American composer's birth byincluding some of his most beautiful compositions.

FrostianaFrostiana was commissioned for the two-hundredth anniversary of the incotporation of the town of Amherst Mas-

sachusetts. It was composed between June 15 and July 7, 1959, in Gstaad, Switzerland. The work was first performedby the Bicentennial Chorus, comprised of singers of all denominations in the township. The composer conducted andpoet Robert Frost was present

Duke Ellington, 7899-7974Edward Kennedy Ellington did more than create the most original music in America; he inspired a new reason for being.

The Duke, as he was known, wrote more than 3,000 works. He wrote everywhere and quickly writing "Solitude" in 20minutes leaning against a glass partition in the hall of a recording studio. Ellington kept his orchestra together for morethan 50 years with many of the same musicians staying for decades. He died in 1974 just after his 75th birthday. This isalso the 100th anniversary of the birth of Duke Ellington and so we celebrate this great American and his music by doinga medley of his tunes.

Verse III (Arnold Arenas, TtirJor) "Jesus Christus, Golles Sohn"But Jesus Christ, God's only son, to our low state descended,The cause of Death He has undone, His power forever ended,Ruined all his right and claim and left him nothing but the name,-His sting is lost fore~er. Hallelujah!

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN

Two roads diverged in a yellow woodAnd sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.

COME INAs I came to the edge of the woods,Thrush music - hark! Now if it was dusk outside,Inside it was dark.

Too dark in the woods for a birdBy sleight of wingTo better its perch for the night,Though it still could sing.

The last of the light of the sunThat had died in the westStill lived for one song moreIn a thrush's breast.

Far in the pillared darkThrush music went -Almost like a call to come inTo the dark and lament.

But no, I was out for stars:I would not come in.I meant not even if asked,And I hadn't been.

---~- ----- --

THEPASTURE

I'm going out to clean the pasture spring;I'll only stop to rake the leaves away(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):I sha'n't be gone long. --- You come too.

I'm going out to fetch the little calfThat's standing by the mother. It's so youngIt totters when she licks it with her tongue.I sha'n't be gone long. --- You come too.

CHOOSE SOMETHING LIKE ASTAR

o Star (the fairest one in sight),We grant your loftiness the rightTo some obscurity of cloud-It will. not do to say of night,Since dark is what brings out your light. Some mystery becomes the proud.

.But to be wholly taciturnIn your reserve is not allowed.Say something to us we can learnBy heart and when alone repeat.Say something! And it says, 'I bum.'But say with what degree of heat.Talk Fahrenheit, talk Centigrade.Use language we can comprehend.Tell us what elements you blend. It gives us strangely little aid,But it does tell something in the end.And steadfast as Keats' Eremite,Not even stooping from its sphere,It asks a little of us here.It asks of us a certain height,So when at times the mob is swayedTo carry praise or blame too far,We may choose something like a starTo stay our minds on and be staid.
