After getting a tattoo, how long do I have to wait before getting it removed? You need to wait until the skin is fully healed, which is a minimum of eight to 10 weeks after placement of the tattoo.

Are all tattoo removal machines the same?When it comes to tattoo removal, pico second lasers are state-of-the-art technology. This means that the laser fires every one trillionth of a second. This creates an intense waveform that is able to penetrate the skin and break up the underlying ink. Compared to previous lasers, the pico second laser is like hitting the ink with a sledgehammer rather than a regular hammer.

How much does tattoo removal cost?The cost per treatment varies and depends on a lot of factors, but generally the session is approximately $450 for a business card size tattoo. The bigger the tattoo, the higher the cost per treatment.

How many treatments are needed to remove a tattoo?The number of treatments varies, depending on factors, such as colour, depth of ink and type of ink used. Also, generally, brighter colours are much harder to remove.

Will the tattoo completely go away?In some cases, you may not be able to completely remove the tattoo, and you may be left with a small white hue or a very faint outline of the tattoo.

How long does the procedure take?Depending on the size of the tattoo, the treatment can be anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.

What is the hardest colour to remove?The hardest tattoo colours to remove are the bright colours such as red, yellow and green. Standard tattoo machines generally only have one wavelength, and that wavelength is usually specific to darker colours such as the blacks. The new pico second lasers generally have two separate wavelengths—one specifically for darker colours and one specifically for the brighter colours. This leads to better clearance of the tattoo with fewer treatments.

Can I just have my tattoo faded to prepare for a new one on top?Yes, if you don’t want to completely remove the tattoo, the laser treatment can also be used to fade the tattoo.

Does it hurt?The procedure is very quick and most people find that it’s no worse than when the tattoo was originally applied. It is generally tolerated well.

Will my skin blister after a tattoo removal treatment?With newer pico second technology, the chance of complications, including a burn, is significantly reduced.

Do I need to avoid the sun after a tattoo removal treatment? It is recommended that you avoid sun exposure for two weeks prior and two weeks after having the treatment. It is always a good idea after the treatment to keep the area out of the sun and apply a good sunscreen.

How soon after a treatment can I go back to the gym? You should avoid heavy exercise and sweating for approximately 48 hours after tattoo removal treatment.

HOW DOES PRP HELP WITH HAIR GROWTH?PRP is used to stimulate inactive hair follicles and new hair follicles that have just been placed after a hair transplant. It will not bring back hair if you were already bald, however, if you have thinning hair, this procedure may work quite well for both men and women. PRP can be used in conjunction with other treatments for hair growth as well.

HOW IS THE PROCEDURE DONE?Blood is drawn from your arm and then placed into a centrifuge. While spinning in the centrifuge, the blood is separated into its natural components. During this process, the growth factors that stimulate cell growth become concentrated. It is this component of concentrated cells that is then removed and reinjected into your area of concern.

PRPPRPPRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a procedure in which an individual uses his or her body’s own natural growth factors in a concentrated form to stimulate cell growth in order to produce new healthy cells and promote healing. Commonly used to promote hair growth, to reduce fine wrinkles and for hand rejuvenation, the treatment is not new and has been used for over two decades.

WHAT IS PRP USED FOR? PRP is most commonly used to promote hair growth, hand rejuvenation and to reduce fine wrinkles, acne scars, crow’s feet (fine wrinkles around the corner of the eyes), tear trough (hollowness under the eyes) and to enhance décolletage.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME?Generally, most people can return to full activities immediately after the procedure, however, you can have some swelling and bruising in the area that can persist for a few days.

A PRP treatment generally starts with three sessions that are spaced approximately four to six weeks apart.

DOES IT HURT?The procedure is generally tolerated quite well, although sometimes a topical anesthetic can be applied to the skin ahead of time. The PRP is usually injected using a very fine insulin-type needle, micro-needling or a derma pen.

Millions of women suffer from extreme, uncomfortable sweating, but few people know that extreme sweating

is a serious medical condition known as hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis—extreme sweating on the hands, feet, face, underarms or body—can be devastating. Many women try to hide their sweating problems and suffer in silence, but the impacts are often hard to cover up. Dramatic sweating can cause severe embarrassment, stress, anxiety, and other emotional issues. There are solutions to hyperhidrosis, but the first step is to bust some common myths and misconceptions.

MYTH:Sweaty women are nervous or have hygiene issues.

TRUTH:Sweat is essential to human survival. It works to cool the body and protect it from overheating. Women (and men) with hyperhidrosis (which causes overactive sweat glands) sweat excessively regardless of mood, weather or activity level—often producing four or five times more sweat than is considered “normal.”

SWEAT IS ESSENTIAL TO HUMAN SURVIVAL. IT WORKS TO COOL THE BODY AND PROTECT IT FROM OVERHEATING.

MYTH:Night sweats are a “female” problem and nothing to worry about.

TRUTH:Night sweats can be serious and they aren’t just something that affect menopausal women. Night sweats can be significant and shouldn’t be disregarded —no matter your age or gender. Drenching night sweats, or any changes in your pattern of sweating should be evaluated by a physician. Medical conditions with sweating symptoms can include serious infections, cancer, low blood sugar, hormone disorders (not simply the hormonal changes of menopause) and neurologic conditions. Medications may also cause night sweats. It’s important to talk to your doctor about night sweating, especially if the night sweats are accompanied by a fever or other symptoms such as unexplained weight loss. Maybe menopause is the culprit, but certainly new night sweating should be discussed with your physician. One thing you don’t need to worry about —hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). The medical condition hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating when awake, not asleep.

MYTH:Excessive sweating is only a sweat problem.

TRUTH:Excessive sweating can contribute other health problems. Emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, embarrassment and isolation are common. Practical problems with gripping objects and using touch- screen technology are also frequent.

MYTH:Girls and young women will grow out of hyperhidrosis.

TRUTH:Contrary to popular belief, research shows that hyperhidrosis does not go away or decrease with age. In fact, in one recent IHhS study, 88 per cent of respondents said their excessive sweating had gotten worse or stayed the same over time. This was consistent across all the different age groups, from youngsters to older adults.

MYTH:Antiperspirants are for women’s underarms only and, like caffeine, are best used in the morning.

TRUTH:You can use antiperspirant nearly anywhere that sweating is a problem (hands, feet, face, back, chest, and even groin.) Be smart and talk to your dermatologist first before applying an antiperspirant to sensitive areas and test new products on small areas of skin first. Luckily, there are antiperspirant brands like Certain Dri—one of the most effective that can be purchased without a prescription—that are specifically developed to help those who suffer from excessive sweating. They also work well at night and typically last for 24 hours.

MYTH:Excessive sweating is less debilitating than other skin conditions women have to deal with.

TRUTH:Various investigations show the impact of hyperhidrosis on quality of life is equal to or greater than that of in-patient psoriasis, severe acne, vitiligo and chronic itching. The extreme level of sweat production experienced with hyperhidrosis can disrupt all aspects of a woman’s life, from workplace performance, relationships, recreational activities, and self-image to overall emotional well-being. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are helpful resources available to help people with hyperhidrosis to not just “know sweat,” but to also achieve a more comfortable, fruitful and happier life.

There are many things that can be done to help sweating, such as topical treatment, oral pills and injection with Botox. You should discuss your problem with a health care professional.

MYTH:Antiperspirants can cause breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

TRUTH:According to the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation, National Cancer Institute, BreastCancer.org, and the Alzheimer’s Association, there are no strong scientific studies reporting a statistical association between antiperspirant use and breast cancer risk or Alzheimer’s risk. If you’re concerned about breast cancer or Alzheimer’s, you don’t need to ditch your antiperspirants—focus instead on having regular health screenings, avoiding alcohol, exercising regularly, eating a nutritious balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, staying mentally and socially involved, and protecting yourself from head injuries.

Not drinking enough water throughout the day compromises the top layer of our skin, forcing our sebaceous glands to produce more oil to compensate. Even if your skin produces oil in vast quantities, a lack of water will result in tight, itchy, flaky skin in addition to the excess oil. to eliminate any unwanted part, then just split where desired and sweep to either side of the face. It’s a simple and effortless look that really pops when the rest of the hair is tied up in a pony or top knot.

I don’t often recommend trying out a fringe in the summertime, as a heavy fringe can lead to breakouts on the forehead from the heat and humidity. But this look is swept off the face, so it’ll keep you and your skin in the clear.

WET LOOKThe wet look has been on trend for some time now and you’re probably thinking: “What? Again?” Let me tell you, 2018 is all about texture and that means taking that immaculately combed, stuck-to-your-head, slicked back hair and Shaking. It. Up!

The 2018 Spring/Summer runways were littered with tousled (and classic) wet looks, popping up in shows by The Blonds, Markus Lupfer and Alexander McQueen, to name a few. Given the drastic weather changes in Canada, a wet look in winter is probably not ideal—so summer is the season to give this look a go!

GET THE LOOK: No longer gelled down like a helmet, it’s time to let your natural hair be loose and free. Once towel dried, saturate your hair in a sea salt spray, style as desired and let air dry. As you go on about your day and it starts to naturally dry, toss your head upside down and side to side to just loosely shake it out. If it starts to go frizzy, lightly mist with a hair oil or a little more sea salt spray and scrunch. If your hair is on the thicker side, you may need to move into gels and pomades.

The key is to try and trap the moisture inside your strands to keep it looking wet all day long. This new twist on the classic wet look will be much easier to achieve and maintain throughout the day, especially when at the beach or poolside.

SUPER SHORT PIXIEYou can thank Moschino for this ultra-chic haircut! Designer Jeremy Scott sent models down the runway at the 2018 Spring/Summer Moschino show sporting 90s supermodel-inspired pixie cuts—like the one Linda Evangelista used to rock back in the day. This look will be the highlight of the summer for those brave enough to rock the short do!

“Take care of yourself, but don’t try to be a Kardashian or a Gwyneth Paltrow. Just be you.”HOW DID YOU GET INTO ACTING?I’ve always wanted to be an actor. I grew up in a family where my father was vice-president of Famous Players. Do you remember that theatre chain? Every time a new multiplex would open, we would move to a different province, so I spent my childhood in projection booths, basically. That’s where I saw a lot of my first movies. And, I really wasn’t focused on the movies; I would rather watch the people and their reactions to the movies. It was, I guess, my first love affair with humanity—just watching people and how they react differently to the same experience. And from then on I wanted to be an actor.

IS IT HARD FOR CANADIANS TO BREAK INTO THE INDUSTRY? It’s harder for Canadians to break into American shows. They come here and they use our crews and they use our facilities, but they already sort of travel with their own cast. So, in order to take the job away from an American, you have to really, really push and create a bit of a resume for yourself. Another thing that’s difficult is we don’t have the same star system here. So, I could have the same resume, or could have worked the same amount as an American has worked, but I don’t have street cred like they

do because we just don’t have the star system that supports our actors here, or any of our artists, for that matter.

WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING THE ONLY CANADIAN ON HANDMAID’S TALE?I’m going to be honest, at first it was hard. I think there’s a certain misconception that people have about Canadians—that we’re shy and quiet and humble. I don’t feel like I was let into the “party” right away. I mean, I wasn’t one of the regulars. So, I felt it took a little bit of time for me to prove my worth, and prove why I got that role over, say, an American or a Brit. But, eventually we became more of a family, myself and the cast and the crew. And now some of the cast members are some of the loves of my life. Like, I dearly, dearly, dearly love them. But it took time.

HAS APPEARING ON THE HANDMAID’S TALE INCREASED YOUR OPPORTUNITIES IN CANADA?Oh my gosh, it’s night and day. It’s like my career took a 180. It didn’t start necessarily right at Handmaid’s. Orphan Black was quite a successful show and then that snowballed into Suicide Squad and then Room. Room was nominated for all the Academy Awards and put Jacob Tremblay and Brie Larson on the map, really. And, it was sort of my affiliation with those shows that snowballed into Handmaid’s.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR SOMEBODY TRYING TO GET INTO THE BUSINESS? I would say, especially for women, don’t try to mould yourself into what you think is the perfect Hollywood starlet. Take care of yourself, but don’t try to be a Kardashian or a Gwyneth Paltrow. Just be you. Younger male actors have an easier job doing that. And women try to mould themselves

into being something else. And the only thing that’s going to be special about you, and the thing you can truly sell, is you. I mean, I’m tall. And I have an interesting face on camera. I have all of these things and I tried to avoid them for the longest time. And suddenly, when I stopped avoiding them, I started getting the interesting, strange, quirky, eclectic, more character-type roles. And suddenly, my career opened up.

ARE THERE ANY BEAUTY TIPS THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND? Start a skin care regimen early on. Like, from the moment you come out of the womb. You can try different products, but stay loyal to your skin, because it’s going to thank you forever. Sunscreen for life. And when you’re older, save some money so you can get a facelift. I’m dead serious.

DO YOU FOLLOW AN EXERCISE REGIMEN?I run a lot. It’s the thing that helps me clear my head. I love running. A lot of my friends are into pilates and yoga and that’s centering. Just naturally, I find, actors and artists, we are a little more anxious than normal people. And so anything to get you centered and get balance back into your life is good.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO TELL US?I have a charity. It’s called Brugs Army. I run it online and twice a year, I raise money for women’s and children’s groups. It’s a different group every time. And we’ve raised close to a $100,000 for survivors of domestic violence, shelters for women who are homeless or children’s hospitals. It’s something that I am really passionate about. I think if you’ve been given a platform and you’ve been given a voice and anyone’s willing to listen, you just need to use it for good.

6-packCore strength and core stability lead to great-looking abs and also protect your spine. The terms are often used interchangeably, but there’s a difference between core strength and core stability. Core strength is when you can hold a position or posture while resisting fatigue. Core stability is the ability to maintain your balance when movement is added to a position or posture. Many experts now say that crunches have the potential to cause injury to the discs of the spine in our neck, so here are a few of my favourite abdominal exercises that can help protect your neck and get you working on that six-pack.

SIDE PLANK WITH HIP LIFT Start in a side plank position, either on your hand or your elbow with your fingers in front of your body, palm down, making sure either is directly below your shoulder. Stack your feet one on top of the other, or put your top foot just in front of your bottom foot. Extend your top arm straight up toward the sky. Tighten your abs and lift your hips straight up. This movement should be small, without falling below your plank position, when bringing your hips back to the starting position. Do 12-14 reps on each side.

SLOW CROSS BODY MOUNTAIN CLIMBERStart in a plank position, shoulders directly above your wrists, keeping your body straight from head to heels. Tighten your abs and bring your right knee in toward your left shoulder. Hold for two seconds, then return to start. Repeat on the opposite side. Do 12-14 reps on each side.

BENT-KNEE WINDSHIELD WIPERStart by lying flat on your back. Place your arms straight out to your sides. Bring your knees up, directly above your hips and feet out to form a 90-degree angle. Keep your legs at a 90-degree angle during the whole exercise. Rotate your knees down to one side until they are about three inches off the ground. Return to the start position and repeat on the opposite side to complete one rep. Do 12-14 reps.

DEAD BUGStart by lying on your back with your arms extended toward the sky and bring your knees up, directly above your hips up and feet out to form a 90-degree angle or legs straight above the hips. Exhale, flatten your lower back onto the floor and tighten your abs. The key is to keep your lower back flat on the ground throughout the movement and perform the exercise slowly. Begin the exercise by slowly extending one leg down, straightening the knee and hip, to bring the leg just above the ground—slowly extending the opposite arm straight above your head just above the ground at the same time. Repeat on the opposite side to complete one rep. Do 12-14 reps.

SEATED RUSSIAN TWISTSitting tall with your knees bent, feet in front of you, lean back slightly keeping your spine straight so that you are in a “V” position. Tighten your abs and twist your body at the waist to one side and then the other. Exhaling as you twist, reach back and touch the ground behind you. For added resistance, you can hold a hand weight or medicine ball. One twist to each side is one rep. Do 15-20 reps.

1. Fasting helps your heart healthA scientific review in the British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease suggests that fasting diets may help those with diabetes and cardiovascular disease, alongside established weight loss claims. Cardiac researchers at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute (May 2011) have demonstrated that routine periodic fasting is good for our health and our hearts. This discovery expands upon a 2007 Intermountain Healthcare study that revealed an association between fasting and a reduced risk of coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death among men and women in America. Fasting was also found to reduce other cardiac risk factors, such as triglycerides, weight and blood sugar levels.

2. It slows the aging process and boosts your metabolismBoth humans and mice that manage to live to a ripe old age show a clear change in their glucose metabolism, according to a study by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (November 2007). Terry Combs and his colleagues report that changes in metabolism can indeed increase longevity. They discovered that long-lived mice burn less glucose and more fatty acids during periods of fasting, and, as a result, they produce fewer free radicals.

The key to this switch may be fasting and its associated adiponectin boost. Adiponectin is the hormone our body releases during exercise that burns fat, aids insulin balance and reduces inflammation. Researchers found that Snell mice had three times as much adiponectin in their blood as control mice; Snell mice also had fewer triglycerides in their cells, indicative of higher fat metabolism.

3. It helps keep you strong and lean via boosting growth hormoneStudies have clearly shown that our body responds to fasting by boosting growth hormone—the hormone that helps build

muscle. Apparently, the hunger or stress caused by fasting leads the body to release more cholesterol, which allows it to utilize fatas a source of fuel, instead of glucose. Ultimately then, this decreases the number of fat cells in the body. Growth hormone protects the lean muscle and metabolic balance, a response triggered and accelerated by fasting. During the 24-hour fasting periods undertaken in the study, growth hormone increased an average of 1,300 per cent in women and nearly 2,000 per cent in men.

4. It improves blood sugar metabolism and Type 2 diabetesA team led by James Brown from Aston University (April 2013) evaluated the various approaches to intermittent fasting in scientific literature. They searched specifically for the advantages and limitations in treating obesity and Type 2 diabetes using fasting diets. The basic format of intermittent fasting is to alternate days eating ‘normally’ with days when calorie consumption is restricted. This can either be done on alternate days (Day 1: eat normally/ Day 2: restrict) or by designating two days within each as ‘fasting days.’ These types of intermittent fasting styles have been shown in trials to be as effective as or more effective than counting calories every day to lose weight. Evidence from clinical trials shows that fasting can limit inflammation, improve levels of sugars and fats in circulation by impacting adiponectin, and reduce blood pressure.

Intimacy in a relationship is vital for human connection; it’s a natural and important part of living a healthy and happy life. But when chronic pain invades your life, it can strip you of the pleasure that comes with being inti-mate and lead to other issues. How can you maintain a healthy, sexually active relationship when headaches, lower

back pain or other chronic illnesses are limiting your ability or desire to engage in life and intimacy? Here are tips and information about how—and why—you should still make your intimate life a priority.

KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALONEResearch shows that 30 per cent of women report having anxiety around sex and intimacy from chronic pain. It is known as a ‘silent epidemic’ because few people feel comfortable discussing their issues around intimacy. Chronic pain from headaches causes 69 per cent of women to avoid intimacy and sex. Those statistics are astounding considering how important intimacy is for health and happiness.

CHRONIC PAIN CAN LEAD TO LACK OF SELF-CONFIDENCE IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPIt is very common for people who are in chronic pain to feel insecure in their relationship. They often feel that their partner has lost interest and is less attracted to them because of the pain. or other factors that are associated with chronic pain, including mood disorders, decreased libido, medications or stress. Any combination of those factors will cause the pain sufferer to feel inadequate in a relationship and less willing to engage sexually. Often times the pain can be managed with medica-tions, however, the side effects can also further limit your desire to be intimate.

WORK WITH A GOOD TEAM TO DEVELOP A TREATMENT PLANThe interesting thing about pain is that it can be managed. The right group of health care providers can help you develop a treatment plan to ensure that your pain and symptoms are treated appro-priately. A combination of treatments is the most effective, since each healing modality has something different to offer.

I always begin chronic pain treatment with Registered Massage Therapy to help loosen tight muscles that are contributing to pain. When muscles become loose, it takes pressure off of joints so movement can be achieved with ease and less pain.

Chiropractic adjustments are a great way to reduce pain and keep the body limber. If your spine is in alignment, it is easy for muscles and joints to perform. Your body will have fewer physical restrictions enabling you to move through pain.

The body’s natural painkillers, called endorphins, which are released when you are physically and sexually active, can be healing and can make you feel more able and willing to engage in life. Further reducing the amount of activity in your life will only make getting back on track more difficult. I suggest finding an activity that you love and be sure to do it once per day. It can be as simple as a short walk in the park or in a mall, or a five- to 10-minute session on an elliptical machine or treadmill. Any form or duration of physical activity is a great place to start. Stick with it to build the stamina you need to heal. A daily dose of feel good hormones from exercise will help to elevate your mood and naturally reduce some of the pain and discomfort.

It is important for your health and your relationship to be sexually active while you are trying to manage your pain. Experimenting with different positions that will cause the least pain and anxiety is helpful. Many chronic pain sufferers report that missionary position or a side-lying position is easiest and most physically accommodating.

BE MORE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE WITH YOUR PARTNERThe key to a healthy and happy life is the ability to be active for many, many years. When this ability seems to be stripped from you due to chronic pain, getting back into motion can seem like an impossible feat. However, studies do show that maintaining even a small level of activity is key. To replenish your mind, body and soul from the effects of chronic pain, I recommend being active with your partner. Engaging in stretching and other movement techniques as a couple is an effective way of keeping your relationship healthy and your body mobile so that chronic pain does not get the better of you and your sex life.

To avoid these, simply change as soon as possible and avoid wearing wet swimsuit bottoms under your shorts or skirts.

WASH WITH WARM WATERNow more than ever, you need to feel extra fresh, especially down there. That means you should wash or shower more. Stay away from douches and strongly scented body washes as they can easily infect your vagina.

WASH AND CHANGE TOWELS OFTENWet towels are the ideal breeding ground for bacteria. That means that every time you use your days-old towel, you are exposing your body and your vagina to bacterial infections! So make it a habit of washing your towels and changing them as often as you can.

hen parents see other parents dealing with a child in the midst of a Grade A  meltdown, we universally give each other the sympathy smile and nod which means: “I feel you!”  But note, if a parent doesn’t extend this  courtesy to us while our child is melting down…well, we don’t like that very much now, do we?

My point? (And let me start by admitting that I am nervous to say this out loud—and I also realize no two kids are made the same and every family is different!) But, basically, what I am about to share with you is the idea that “do unto others” applies to our kids, too. This parenting approach comes from a place of, “Hey this has worked for us, and maybe it will work for you, too.” Anyhow, here it goes.

DO UNTO OTHERSOne of the most important messages my hubby and I want to send to our kids is this: you need to treat people the way you would want to be treated. This includes our kids. Let’s put it this way, if a friend or a co-worker was having a bad day and was angry, difficult, or melting down, would you tell them to go sit in a time out or drag them out of the mall or coffee shop? How would you feel if a friend did this to you when you were having a bad day? You might feel humiliated or like you were being dismissed. Maybe you would feel unheard and not important. What kids probably need most in this situation is a “time in” or a reset, with you helping them find that button. This takes time, I know, and a lot of patience, but for us it has saved time in the long run because the kids can now access those tools on their own.

TRY A “TIME IN”I struggle with children being given a “time out” or being told to simply stop it when they are angry or frustrated. Someone told me very early on in my parenting journey to stop and rule out the variables of what really might be happening with our child in that meltdown. Are they tired, hungry or over stimulated? I treat them the same way I might treat a friend who is melting down. Is that friend embarrassed? Are they over-worked, over-tired and just need to vent? Who do they need me to be to help them get through their meltdown? Shouldn’t we also be that person for our kids?

DEMONSTRATE EMPATHY Kids test boundaries, of course, but they also have meltdowns when they feel embarrassed,  tired, mad or frustrated. While staying calm, we can have an age-appropriate conversation with our child, asking them simple questions like: “What’s going on?” or “Why are you so mad?”  Just like you would with a friend.

If our child is too upset to express what is bothering them, we just sit with them quietly until they calm down. Like you would with a friend. Some of these sitting sessions can last for quite some time, while others last a few minutes. The result is that the kids feel listened to and safe to tell what is bothering them. We demonstrate empathy while sharing ideas on better ways to cope with their feelings. 

RESPECT THEIR EMOTIONSNow, make no mistake: this style of parenting  is not an open door to be a pushover for our children, or to let them be the boss. But I have honestly noticed, as our kids have gotten older

—and as we continue to respect them and their emotions—their meltdowns have become less frequent. They will verbalize when they are angry or frustrated and ask if we can have a talk in their room. They are comfortable talking openly about the “volcano-exploding on the inside,” as we call it at our house.  

I know this may not sit well with a lot of parents. Some may even think we are quite wacky to say this out loud, but it is our style and it works for us. If it helps alleviate some of the meltdowns in your house and gives you some special moments, then that is a win for all.

30 years, actor Lorenzo Lamas appeared on our

TV screens as a leading man on popular shows like Falcon Crest

and Renegade. Lamas got his break early, by playing the role of “Tom” in the worldwide phenomenon known as Grease; set to celebrate its 40th anniversary this summer. Born in Santa Monica, California, Lamas grew up loving the beach and is still an avid swimmer (perhaps learning his strokes from his father or stepmother, Fernando Lamas and Esther Williams—stars of the Hollywood’s “splashy” hit Dangerous When Wet). With a love for all things sunshine and West Coast, it’s no surprise that Lamas recently moved back to the beach, setting up his “Surfside Pied-à-Terre” (as he likes to call it) in a quaint Orange County community. JE: You’ve spent the last few years in NYC flying helicopters What made you decide to move back to southern California?

LL: Have you driven the I-95 in a snowstorm? In all honesty, I’m a California boy. I missed the sunshine, the surfing, my lovely kids… NYC was great. I really improved my aviation skills flying over Manhattan every day, but it was time to come home.

JE: What was your inspiration when you decorated your space?LL: I wanted to bring in a bit of a masculine beach vibe and have the space feel relaxed, cozy and inviting. I worked with designers Patrick Delanty and Kellee Merrell. They really dug into my passions and were able to interpret my style so seamlessly. They also found some great old photographs of my father from the 1950s and used them to develop the colour scheme.

JE: What are your favourite pieces?LL: I’d have to say the surfboard above the sofa. It’s from a small local company. I also like the hints of colour—especially my cool little retro fridge. We used a lot of natural wood from the dining table to the bed; solid Canadian lumber. I filmed a number of shows in Vancouver and Toronto, so I have an affinity for all things Canadian. Both pieces are from Mobilia, a Montreal-based furniture company. I also love the artwork and all my collectables on display. My favourite works are from Dutch

painter Tanja Rector and Canadian artist John Goetz—both artists are now based in Santa Monica, right near the airport.

JE: What is the one thing you would recommend to readers looking to create a beach-inspired space?LL: Just have fun with it. The beach is a fun place! Bring that sense of play into your home and don’t be afraid to mix colours, pattern and texture. And if you can, find a good designer who brings you a bit out of your comfort zone. Patrick and Kellee picked things I would have never picked out myself and yet everything works! I have truly never felt more at home in a space, than I do now.

beverage choices (and maybe even your attire!). Hot themes for summer 2018 include “Palm Springs in the 1960s” (croquet, Pucci-inspired colour palette, retro cocktails) and a “Great Gatsby” garden party!

1. Welcome your guests with a signature cocktail. Fill a large wine glass with

Prosecco and place a fruit-flavoured Popsicle in each. The presentation looks amazing and the Popsicle keeps the Prosecco ice-cold.

2. Use garden urns as ice buckets. Create unique (and multiple) drink stations by

simply filling urns with plenty of ice and your favourite beverages. Looks great and prevents backlog at the bar or kitchen area.

3. Add a tropical summer look to plain glass votive holders by wrapping the

exterior with a large palm leaf. Use a string of raffia to secure it.

4. Try a fresh twist on the potluck by hosting your own “festival.” For a

“Jazz Festival,” run with a New Orleans vibe. Friends can send you their top five jazz picks to add to a playlist and each guest can bring a Cajun-inspired dish!

5. Take care of your guests. Fill buckets or baskets with outdoor essentials

like sunscreen, sunglasses and bug spray.

Your guests will thank you and won’t need to pester you throughout the day or evening.

6. Decorate your drinks! Drop petals of edible flowers into the water in an ice

tray… freeze and voila! Your ice has become a signature element to your beverage displays.

7. Short on glasses, serving pieces or tableware? Consider using a rental

service. Party rental companies have everything you need at a fraction of the cost of buying. The best part? You can return dishware unwashed!

8. For your summer centrepieces, incorporate a little rustic charm. Run

vintage wine crates down the centre of a table and fill with seasonal fruit. Place flowers in varying sizes of tin cans (labels removed) and scatter them among the crates. The look is whimsical, rustic and affordable!

9. Activities make a summer party so have plenty planned! Play croquet

or horseshoes! Make your own fun outdoor photo booth or screen a classic beach movie outside.

10. Most of all, don’t stress! The best part of summer entertaining is

that it is almost always informal. Do you have a friend who can mix a mean cocktail? Perform magic tricks? Let them help! This will free yourself up for your most important duty: hosting!

THREE SEAFOOD RECIPES TO DAZZLE YOUR GUESTS

Summertime means light, easy entertaining on the deck, crisp rosé in the ice bucket and seafood—lots of delicious seafood. Here are three recipes that you can whip up in no time, with plenty of “wow” factor to dazzle your guests.

Serves two or three as an appetizer.If you are not lucky enough to live near an Italian or Portuguese grocery store that sells cooked octopus in oil at their deli counter, find some good quality canned octopus and use that.

INGREDIENTS:Approx. 75 g cooked octopus marinated in oil, sliced into bite-sized pieces

1/2 cup finely diced tomato

1 scallion, thinly sliced

1 clove garlic, grated on a rasp

1 scant tbsp of chopped, fresh basil

1 heaping tbsp chopped, fresh mint

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (use the best quality oil you have)

1 tbsp white balsamic vinegar (or other mild white vinegar)

Pinch kosher salt and a few grinds of pepper

DIRECTIONS:Mix everything together in a bowl, cover and let sit at least 15 or 20 minutes at room temperature. If you are not going to eat it right away, store it in the fridge until 15 minutes before you serve it.

PORTUGUESE STYLE

Serves two as a main dish or four as an appetizer

INGREDIENTS:2 lbs small clams (little neck work well - often sold as “pasta clams”), cleaned and rinsed

1 tbsp olive oil

4 tbsp butter

4 cloves garlic, sliced thin

Scant 1/4 cup vihno verde (a slightly effervescent Portuguese white wine)

A big handful of cilantro, washed and chopped

Juice from two lemons

More lemons cut into chunks

DIRECTIONS:Melt the butter and olive oil in a deep pan or pot with a tight-fitting lid over medium heat. Sauté the garlic in the pan for just a couple of minutes—you don’t want the butter or the garlic to brown. Add in the vihno verde and turn the heat up to medium high.

Throw in the clams and give the pan a good shake, put the lid on and let them steam for about 7 to 10 minutes, giving a good shake at least a couple of times, until all of the shells have opened.

Pour in the lemon juice and add in the cilantro and give them a good stir. Pour everything into a big, shallow serving bowl and return the unopened clams to the pot with a spoonful of juice, and cook for another two or three minutes. Discard any clams that remain unopened and add the opened clams to the serving bowl.

Serve with fresh bread for dipping in the buttery sauce. This is also delicious over rice or pasta.

Seared TunaON RICE NOODLE SALADBy Carole Nelson Brown

Serves four

INGREDIENTS:1 tbsp grapeseed oil400g centre cut, sushi grade tunaKosher salt200g rice noodles1 carrot, thinly julienned or shreddedA handful of cilantro, washed and leaves picked off

DRESSING: 2 tsp sugar1 tsp wasabi paste1/3 cup ponzu2 tbsp mirin2 tbsp fish sauceJuice of 1 lime*Crispy wonton strips (directions below)

DIRECTIONS: TUNASalt the tuna with a pinch of kosher salt on all sides. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium high heat, add the tuna and sear for one minute on each side—you want it rare on the inside and not really browned on the outside. Allow to cool slightly, wrap in plastic wrap and store in the fridge.

DRESSINGFor the dressing, combine all the ingredients in a bowl, add the julienned carrot and set aside.

NOODLESCook the noodles according to the package instructions, depending on the thickness of the rice noodle—many types only require a minute or two— and then immediately run under cold water to stop the cooking process and cool them down.

CRISPY WONTON STRIPSCut the wonton wrappers into thin strips. Add 1” of oil into a small pot. Heat the oil until it reaches about 350F. (Or, touch the bottom of the pot with a wooden chopstick. If the oil bubbles up around the chopstick, it’s hot enough.) Add one strip to test and if it starts to brown right away, it’s hot enough. Add small handfuls of wonton strips to the pot and when golden, remove to a paper towel-lined plate with a slotted spoon.

ASSEMBLERemove the tuna from the fridge and slice into 1/4” slices.

Toss the noodles with the dressing/ carrots. Divide the noodles among shallow bowls or plates, top with the tuna slices and garnish with crispy wonton strips and cilantro leaves.

AS A STUDENT, Thirty Bench winemaker Emma Garner travelled

abroad, learning about Old and New World winemaking styles,

before settling into her coveted position at Thirty Bench Winery

in the Niagara region. Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany

and British Columbia were all on the list, and Garner’s passion for

food and wine grew with each trip. Today, Garner’s winemaking

style allows the vineyard to express itself, by making wine with

minimal intervention. She loves working with Rieslings and her

expertise across her portfolio won her the title of Winemaker

of the Year at the 2015 Ontario Wine Awards, recognizing

Garner’s consistent quality, her success and status, and her

contribution to the wine industry. We sat down with Garner

to learn more about winemaking.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A WINEMAKER?I studied oenology and viticulture at Brock University. After my studies, I worked very hard in various positions, ranging from vineyard worker to retail positions. From here, I landed a contract being an R and D winemaker and eventually worked my way up to senior winemaker—15 vintages later! HOW DO YOU TRANSITION FROM SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS WINE TO WANTING TO BE A WINEMAKER?  Good question! I think it takes an internal desire to understand something you love in more depth. What better way than to find a job that lets you do that, year after year? WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY ON THE JOB LIKE FOR YOU?Very diverse, and there is never a dull moment. My days are filled with barrel tastings, guiding other winemakers, meeting with wine writers, scouting vineyards, promoting our wines within the industry etc. At harvest, all of my attention is spent walking the vineyards, deciding upon harvest days and times, processing schedules, tasting juice and making wine. I am always using my senses (sight, smell and taste) everyday, all year.  WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE MORE WOMEN TO PURSUE THIS PROFESSION?  Yes. It is a very rewarding career and a very demanding one. A good support system is integral to being successful. 

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR DAY?  My favourite part of my workday is getting an early start in the vineyards. Walking through the rows as the sun rises is incredible. At the end of the day, I love coming home to my family and enjoying a glass of wine with my husband.  WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WINE?  My favourite wine to make is the wild cask Riesling. I love its rich textural character and the difficulty in making it.  DOES A WINEMAKER BRING OR IMPART A PARTICULAR STYLE TO THE WINE HE OR SHE MAKES? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THE WINE THAT YOU MAKE?Absolutely, the same way artists leave their mark on their art. I try to allow the vineyard to express itself with little intervention, just some guidance.  WHAT ARE THE BEST TYPES OF WINE COMING OUT OF NIAGARA?  I love the Rieslings, the new increased interest and focus on sparkling and Cab Franc.  WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WINE AND WHAT DO YOU SERVE IT WITH?  Really depends on the day and time! I love Champagne with oysters, but in the wintertime a nice hearty Barolo with a roast is spectacular!

BEEROne of my all-time favourite drinks is the Michelada —a beer cocktail. I make mine with sweet Dos Equis Amber beer, adding copious amounts of fresh lime juice, ice, salt, and, if I’m feeling adventurous, a splash of spicy clam cocktail. Either way, the drink is totally crushable, thirst-quenching, savoury, sweet and tart all at once; a refreshing combo that I fell in love with on my first trip to Mexico many years back. It’s still my cottage go-to cocktail.

I was so attached to it, in fact, that I used to think it was the only beer cocktail that was any good. Well, that and the classic Black Velvet—an inspired mix of Guinness and Champagne, which lightens up the heavy stout, making it ideal for lazy summer afternoons. So that doubled the number of beer cocktails in my repertoire to two.

Then I met Mirella Amato, Canada’s first Master Cicerone (which is like being a sommelier, except for beer, instead of wine), who pushed my boundaries, forcing me to open my eyes to a whole new world of beer cocktails. The key is understanding how much of each style of beer a cocktail can handle. When using a pilsner, kölsch or, for that matter, the kind of lager that generally gets used in my beloved Michelada, you can be liberal with your pour. With stout, porter or super-hoppy IPA, a little goes a long way. Even if those are your favourite beers, exercise restraint, since they can easily drown out every other flavour.

Amato assembled all her advice about beer and beer cocktails in her book, Beerology: Everything You Need to Know to Enjoy Beer … Even More, and has designed four new original creations for Vitalize readers to try this summer at home. Or, better yet, dockside.
