Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery

By L. Roane Hunt

What can we expect to find in a traditional cemetery? On the surface, we see an

orderly array of grave markers placed there by surviving family and friends as a memorial to the deceased. These markers provide vital information with words and images that reflect upon the life that has pasted and the hope for a better life in eternity.

In addition to what we find about individuals, we can learn from the identification on the markers as to family groupings and possible relationships to each other. It may be a matter of a family grouping or a community relationship.

In the case of a church cemetery, it probably describes in part the church membership at various times of that church’s history. We may learn how various families related to each other. Who were these families? Were they all indigenous to that locality or did they come from afar to settle there? How did it happen that this group of families joined together in this particular church and decide to be buried in this place? The answers to these question will at best be partial and incomplete, but the information learned will add to our understanding of their history.

The cemetery of Ebenezer Baptist Church is located in the rural part of northern Gloucester County that was farm land and forest, and it remains rural with the addition of some housing developments. The cemetery is well preserved because of the efforts of the church membership to protect the grave memorials. The cemetery is now bounded by an attractive brick wall in the front and a chain fence in the back. The other two sides are bounded by two roads: Indian and Farys Mill Roads.

The Ebenezer Cemetery contains a variety of markers, some are old with illegible engraving and others have been upgraded with more modern markers consistent with the more recent burials. Unfortunately, there are numerous unmarked graves within the older section of the cemetery. Some unmarked graves are visible on the surface, and others are known from obituary accounts written in local newspapers and general knowledge from families.

Many of the efforts made by the church for maintenance to protect the cemetery have been effective, but some efforts have failed because the Ebenezer Baptist Church was dissolved recently. Since the church no longer exists, some commitments of financial provisions for the cemetery are no longer legally binding. With the failure of the church, the responsibility for the cemetery falls upon the new Wall plaque of the Ebenezer Baptist

ownership of the adjacent church building. Currently, the Redeeming Grace Baptist Church is purchasing the property and has accepted responsibility of the cemetery.

There are difficult issues for the new owners of the cemetery because there is no documented history of the management and policies of the Ebenezer Church. Some previous members have provided their interpretation of past practices for accepting burials of church members, but there is no indication of formal records or certificates showing these commitments by the church. The new owners must create and adopt a set of policies that will guide the future management of the cemetery. The first step has been to obtain information of other local churches about their policies and practices in their cemeteries. Each of these churches has been very helpful in this effort.

Another effort has been to gather information about those buried in the cemetery that includes the grave locations and the genealogical connection and identification of possible descendents who might have a continued interest in the maintenance and preservation of the cemetery. The locations of the grave markers have been documented as part of an Explorer Scout project and have been provided to the new owners of the cemetery. The document provides a useful two-dimensional grid that places each marker in zones that can be easily located. Although numerous errors were made in the interpretation of grave markers, these were easily corrected by those with more knowledge of the family histories. Not only does this information help to define history but will be a helpful tool for the future management of the cemetery.

In the process of identifying the locations and the individuals represented by each grave marker, we are given some indication of the Ebenezer Church membership at various time periods of its history. We know that the church was founded in 1826, but we do not know the history of the cemetery. The modern plaque on the cemetery entrance shown on the previous page indicates that the cemetery was established in 1849. We do not know the source of this date, but it does correspond to the death of Philip Taliaferro who was the second pastor of Ebenezer. Following the brief ministry of the founding pastor, Rev. Taliaferro ministered effectively for nearly twenty years until his death on May 11, 1848. However, there is no record of his burial at Ebenezer or elsewhere. The Explorer Scout project concluded that the oldest surviving grave marker dates to 1898.

The purpose of this article is to present what was learned about the family groups that chose to bury their loved ones together in a shared cemetery.

Family Members Buried in Ebenezer Cemetery

The cemeteries of the older churches that have a history that extends back to the colonial times have graves that date back to that period. Baptist churches of that time were illegal under the colonial law, and the Methodist meeting houses were sub-groups of the Anglican Church of the colonial government. After the Revolutionary War and the establishment of the United States of America, Baptist and Methodist were allowed to establish independent churches. However, family tradition was to have burial grounds on their own property because the early Baptist and Methodist meeting houses were not constructed well enough to assure families of a permanent church location needed for a cemetery. Therefore, Ebenezer Cemetery was not established until 1849.

The first item of note from the community of grave markers was that the lists of names engraved on the markers were common family names of longtime residents. These names included Chapman, Brown, Dutton, and German. These individuals are patriarchs of

their families with large numbers of descendents that populated the Gloucester area and beyond. Those with the largest numbers of descendents were John William Clements, William Turner Dutton, Andrew Jackson Brown, Henry Washington Brown, and Andrew Jackson German.

In addition to the older families of this area, there were two newer families that settled here, and they were Hatch and Pratt. John Franklin Hatch’s family came from Lincoln, Maine, and his father, Newell Atwood Hatch, came to Mathews County as a ship carpenter by 1850. Benjamin Pratt lived in Pennsylvania in 1850, and in 1860, he lived with his family in Maryland. By 1870, he had moved to Gloucester during the reconstruction era. The successful integration of these northern families with locals was typical of much that happened throughout the Gloucester area.

This article will present genealogical data of these patriarchs and their families. The author was surprised at the numerous friends and associates that were descendents of these men. The Hatch and Pratt families from the north will be presented first followed by the other families with deeper roots in this area. Members of these northern families intermarried with the southerners to create a productive and successful society.

John Franklin Hatch

Amazingly, most of John Franklin Hatch’s family are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery including his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was the son of Newell Atwood Hatch who was born on January 17, 1825, in Lincoln, Maine. Newell moved to Mathews County, Virginia, and in the 1850 census, he is listed in the household of Robert H. Thompson, a ship carpenter. Newell was married to Robert’s daughter Emily Susan Thompson. In the 1860 Mathews census, Newell is listed as a ship carpenter. Newell and Emily Hatch are buried with three of their infant children in the cemetery of the Providence Methodist Church in the Mobjack section of Mathews.

In addition to John Franklin Hatch, Newell had two daughters that are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Lucy Jane Hatch married Henry Washington Brown, and Keturah Byrd Hatch married Andrew Jackson Brown. Their families will be described later in this article. Newell’s sons Enoch Dine Hatch and Charles E. Hatch and their wives are buried in the Smithers Cemetery in Mathews, and Newell’s third daughter Rozy Hatch married John W. Lewis, and they are buried in the Mathews Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family of John Franklin Hatch is presented in the chart at the top of the next page which includes his children and grandchildren. All of his children are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery as indicated by the asterisk by their names. His eldest daughter Nora Hall Hatch married William Jefferson Dutton, and three of their five children are buried at Ebenezer. Clara Ethel Hatch married Reuben Hudson Dutton, and they are buried at Ebenezer. They had no children but adopted Walter Preston Moore, the son of Bernard Curtis Moore and Ardelle Elizabeth Fitchett. The next daughter Susan Agnes Hatch married Thomas Henry German, and they and three of their four children are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Another daughter Maude Ellis Hatch married Charles Augustus Coffield who came to Gloucester from North Carolina. He was a sawyer and survived his injuries when the C. F. Bristow’s sawmill exploded about a mile from Ebenezer. (See FTS, vol. 22, no. 1, pp 15-27.) Neither of their two children are buried at Ebenezer. Another daughter Ellen Mae Hatch married John Hammond Givans from Maryland, and they and their son John Thomas Givans are buried at Ebenezer. The last two sons of this Hatch family, John Faulkner Hatch and Enoch Andrew Hatch, married Charlotte Geneva Walker

and Hilda Pearl South, respectively. They and their children are also buried at Ebenezer.

Why was the Hatch family so committed to a particular church cemetery? Was it because it was an attractive and beautiful place, or was it a deep connection to that church that motivated them to choose this cemetery as their family burial ground? Without a detailed history of Ebenezer, we are unable to give a complete answer to these questions. However, in recent stories about Ebenezer by Hazel Figg Hughes, she recalled [John] Faulkner Hatch as a deacon serving the bread for the “Lord’s Supper.” Also, she remembered some of the special food provided by some of the Hatch women for the church fellowship meals. An important clue is that Deacon John Faulkner named his first son Julius Weston Hatch who was born in 1916. This corresponds to the time period when Weston Bristow, a young ministerial student from Middlesex, served as pastor of Ebenezer. He was praised for his effective ministry, especially to the youth of the church. Mr. J. F. Hatch had such appreciation for his pastor that he gave his son the uncommon name of “Weston.” The Hatch family were more than casual members of Ebenezer.

Again, it is amazing how this Hatch family committed themselves to adopt the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery as their family burial site for most of three generations, demonstrated by the family chart of John Franklin Hatch’s children and grandchildren. Also, his two sisters who married two brothers of the Brown family were mothers of large families, and many of them joined their Hatch cousins for burial at Ebenezer.

Benjamin Pratt

According to federal census records, Benjamin Pratt was born in Ohio. He married first to Sarah Purdy who was born in Pennsylvania, and in the 1850 census, the Pratt family

was living in Pennsylvania. Their first three children were born in Butler County. Their fourth child was born in Caroline County, Maryland. Sarah died and Benjamin married his second wife, Elizabeth Ann Leagar. Their first children were born in Maryland, and the fifth child was born in Talbot County. Their sixth child, Virginia Georgianna Pratt, was born in Gloucester County, Virginia. Benjamin Pratt migrated south from Ohio with his farming talent and arrived in Gloucester when his abilities were greatly needed.

The above chart shows the family of Benjamin Pratt including his children and grandchildren. He came to Gloucester with his second wife and all of his children. Many of his older children did not stay in Gloucester but returned to familiar locations from which they had come. Benjamin’s daughter Elizabeth Jane Pratt married Robert Henry Marble who like her was born in Caroline County, Maryland, and established the Marble family of Gloucester that has continued here. The first two daughters of Benjamin and Elizabeth Pratt, Mary and Margaret Pratt, married two men who had migrated to Gloucester from Pennsylvania, John B. Rank and Isaac McGallagher Givler, respectively. Their next three daughters married men from families with deeper roots in the Gloucester area. Sarah Catherine Pratt married Philip Hersey Mason; Laura V. Pratt married James T. Gray; and Martha Pratt married Edward German.

Benjamin and Elizabeth Pratt are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery along with Benjamin’s son from his first marriage, Andrew J. Pratt who never married. Benjamin’s daughters who married Isaac Givler and Philip Hersey Mason have families that are well represented in the cemetery. Isaac and Margaret Pratt Givler are buried there with three of their children who died young.

John William Clements

In the process of identifying the individuals and family groups buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery, five senior patriarchs with deep generational roots in the Gloucester area were found. The eldest of these was John William Clements who was born to James Toman Clements and Mary Orinda Mitchell on September 30, 1823. His branch of the Clements family of eastern Virginia account for most, if not all, of the Clements descendents of the Gloucester area. This research revealed over 110 living adult descendents of John William Clements.

As shown in the family chart on the next page, John William Clements had three marriages, ten children, and forty-seven grandchildren. Most of his children and grandchildren married members of other families with deep Gloucester roots. He married first Sarah Lane Smither, and she died soon after the birth of the first son, James Lewis Clements. James married Caroline C. Bridges, and they had four children.

The second marriage of John William Clements was to Hester Anne Clarke, and they had four children. Their first son, John Icabob Clements, married Hester Raines Walden, and they had six children. Sarah Elizabeth Clements married Christopher Columbus Moore, and they had nine children. Robert B. Clements married Elizabeth D. Adams, and they had one child who died in infancy and then another, Elizabeth Davis Clements.

His third marriage was to Mary Elizabeth Wilentine Sibley, and they had five children. Their first son was Joseph Cary Clements who married Roberta May Cooke from Maryland, and they had twelve children. Thomas Jefferson married Fanny Susan Brown, and they had nine children. Boswell Eraspus Clements married the widow of his half-brother, Elizabeth D. Adams, and they had one child. William Toman Clements married Etta Jackson Moore, and they had four children. Lilly Ward Clements married Walter Bernard Fletcher, and they had one child.

Although most of the Clements favored the Methodist churches, John William Clements and his third wife are buried in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Others of his family that are buried there are his grandson, Philip Lewis Clements, who married Mamie Hulda Fletcher and the family of his son, Thomas Jefferson Clements and his wife, Fanny.

Thomas Jefferson Chapman

Another patriarch with deep Gloucester roots and buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery is Thomas Jefferson Chapman Sr. who was born on January 11, 1850. He was the son of Richard Cary Chapman and Caroline Claytor Jackman. Thomas married twice; he had thirteen children that reached adulthood with a total of thirty-eight adult grandchildren.

Thomas Jefferson Chapman’s first marriage was to Sarah Elizabeth Shackelford, and they had seven children that reached adulthood. Their first four children did not have children of their own that reached adulthood, but their fifth child, Richard Cary Chapman Sr., married Mary Frances Edwards and had eight children. Sarah died on June 8, 1888, less that two months after the birth of William Henry Chapman. He died two months later on

August 23, 1888.

The second marriage of Thomas Jefferson Chapman was to Lottie Virginia Richardson, and they had six children that reached adulthood. Their first child was Clara Belle Chapman who married Malvern Spencer Richardson Sr., a captain in the US Navy. Their son Malvern Spencer Richardson Jr. died from a brain tumor at age fourteen. They settled in Norfolk where Capt. Richardson served as a Coast Guard marine inspector.

Walter Lee Chapman was the second child of Thomas and Lottie Chapman, and he married Gertrude Elizabeth Fugman in New York. They had ten children and settled in Gloucester and later in Mathews. Marion Richardson Chapman was the third child, and he married Helen McCoy Gray. They had two children. Claude Marchant Chapman married Lucille Elizabeth Pitts, and they had six children that reached adulthood. Woodford Russell Chapman married Julia Eliza Foster, and they had two children. Dorothy Virginia Chapman married Charles Clarence Kane Jr., and they had three children. Dorothy was co-author of the Chapman book. (See below.)

Thomas Jefferson Chapman and both of his wives are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery. The only child from his first marriage buried there was Susan Caroline Chapman. Those buried there from his second marriage are Clara, her husband, and young son. Also, buried there are his son Claude, his wife, and an infant child.

Dorothy Chapman Kane and her niece Kathryn Chapman Beattie compiled an extensive book about the Thomas Jefferson Chapman family over numerous generations, and they distributed copies to family members and to the organizations and individuals interested in Gloucester family histories. It contained photographs and narrations that described the development of a large successful family. Also, their book was very useful in the search for descendents of the Chapman patriarch buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Andrew Jackson German

Another patriarch with deep Gloucester roots and buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery is Andrew Jackson German who was born on April 1, 1851. He was the son of William German and Sarah Athea Bridges. Andrew first married Annie Elizabeth Ewell and they had five children that reached adulthood with a total of thirteen adult grandchildren. Of his five children: John William German married Eva D. Deagle; Eli Samuel German married Mattie Elizabeth German; Thomas Henry German married Susan Agnes Hatch; Samuel Jackson German married first to Carnelia Ellis Figg and second to Dorothy Lee Everage; and James Stephen German married Huldah Wood Marble. At age 58, Andrew Jackson German married his second wife Olive Blanch Horsley, and they had one son that died in infancy. (Olive was a first cousin of my grandmother Elva Maude Worrell, and they both lived at Woods Cross Roads as children.)

Andrew Jackson German and the families of two of his children are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery. These are Eli Samuel German and his wife, Mattie Elizabeth German, and Thomas Henry German and his wife, Susan Agnes Hatch, with their children. Although Andrew and his second wife and infant son are said to the buried there, no grave marker has survived.

Andrew Jackson Brown

Another patriarch with deep Gloucester roots, Andrew Jackson Brown was born on April 6, 1852. He was the son of Smith Washington Brown and Susan Elizabeth Hill Garrett. He and his wife, Keturah Byrd Hatch, are buried in Ebenezer Cemetery. Andrew and

had at least seven children that reached adulthood with a total of twenty-eight adult grandchildren. Their seven children were: Joshua Steven Dutton who married Mary Emma Rilee; William Jefferson Dutton who married first to Sarah Alice Booker and second to Nora Hall Hatch; Georgia Ann Dutton who married William Marcus Fletcher; Mary Frances Dutton who married James Henry South; Maggie Bertie Dutton who married Robert Herman Fletcher; Reuben Hudson Dutton who married Clara Ethel Hatch; and Flora Bell Dutton who married first to William Ernest South and second to Hugh Carol Johnson.

William and his wife Martha have several children and grandchildren buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery. They are Joshua Steven Dutton with his wife and two of his children; William Jefferson Dutton with his second wife and three of their children; and Reuben Hudson Dutton with his wife and their adopted son.

Locations of Grave Markers

If you have ever discovered that a person was buried in a particular cemetery and tried to find that person’s grave marker, you can appreciate a system that gives information that helps you find that marker. The Explorer Scout project to locate the Ebenezer Cemetery markers used a two-dimensional grid superimposed on an aerial view of the cemetery shown on the next page. The grid along the Farys Mill Road was numbered from 1 to 9, and the grid along the church parking lot was labeled A to H. The two-dimensional zone labeled A1 is shown in the top of the photograph containing only three grave markers. The zones in the other three corners of the cemetery colored white are identified as H1, H9, and A9 to illustrate the system of zone identification.

The initial effort to record the text engraved on each marker was a difficult task because many markers are illegible or difficult to interpret. The actual identification of the individual was verified by genealogical research. The total number of grave markers that were identified was 300. The list includes eight individuals that are supposed to be buried there, but their markers were not found.

Many of the cemetery zones contain clusters of grave markers for family members or other possible family relations. The same list of grave markers is presented for each zone below. Also, the parents and spouse of each person is given to assist in recognizing family connections.

Thomas Hogg Young Soldier of the Revolutionary War

By L. Roane Hunt

Charles Edgar Hogge [1] is one of the faithful members of the Gloucester Genealogical

Society of Virginia who has attended the Monday morning meetings since he joined on May 24, 2000. Recently, in response to numerous requests for material and articles for the society journal, he suggested that we write about the veterans of the Revolutionary War like his ancestor Thomas Hogg. The chart below shows the ancestral ascent from Charles to Thomas Hogg and beyond. The chart includes both of his parents, William Edgar Hogge and Sadie Clements Thomas. Charles is proud to be a native of Guinea, the southern community of Gloucester County, and proud of the standing of his Hogg family in Guinea. [2]

For many years, great effort has been taken to identify the sources of the many Hogg(Hogge) families of eastern Virginia. For many years, the book, Hogg Family of York and Gloucester Counties, Virginia by Elizabeth Hogg Ironmonger was believed to be the primary source for local Hogg genealogy. More recently, Dwight Hogge and Maryus Hogge worked together using DNA testing to sort out and distinguish between various lines of descent. However, the lack of recorded documentation makes it impossible to be absolutely sure as to the definition of families before the mid-1800s.

According to the Gloucester census record of 1810 through 1850, Thomas Hogg had a large family as shown in the chart on the next page. This version of the census record

Charles E. Hogge

1 Charles Edgar Hogge, b. June 15, 1934, was the only child of William Edgar Hogge and Sadie Clements Thomas. He is a member of Union Baptist Church where he has served as deacon and is chairman of the ushers. He is also a long time member of the Achilles Masonic Lodge and the Redman Lodge. He retired as the customer service supervisor in the Utilities Department of Gloucester County.

2 Later generations have added the “e” to their surname.

gives page and line numbers of the record from which this data was taken. The data for males and females for white people and slaves are listed separately. Within each age range, the numbers in each are set off by parenthesis.

In 1810, Thomas was 46 years old, but the record indicates he was no more than 45. However, his wife is shown to be over 45 years of age. Evidently, Thomas had not turned 46 when the census was taken. The number of children indicates that they could have had 3 sons over 10 years and 3 sons less than 10 years. Also, they could have had 3 daughters over 10. They had no slaves listed, but personal tax records indicate that Thomas was assessed tax on a few slaves beginning in 1801.

In 1820, Thomas and his wife are listed over 45 years of age, and they have possibly 5 sons and 3 daughters. He has one or two women slaves and their children. Although he is listed as active in agriculture, he was not assessed any land tax until 1824 when he was assessed tax on 110 acres 20 miles southeast of the courthouse near the Severn River. This assessment noted that he received the land by his marriage to Nancy West with a life estate to the land. The wedding took place at the home of Christopher West. Nancy was probably the widow of Christopher, but some suggest she was his daughter. Normally, daughters did not inherit land as a life estate. In 1844, sixty-five acres from Thomas Hogg were transferred back to the West family.

In 1830, Thomas and Nancy are between 60 and 70 years of age, and some of their older children are listed with them. The family of the women slaves continues to be his possession. Also, a free colored woman at least 56 years old is listed in his household.

In 1840, Thomas is listed as head of his household along with a young family, probably his son Warner because Thomas is listed with Warner Hogg’s family in the 1850 census. There was only one female slave listed in the 1840 census. Thomas, age 75, is listed as a pensioner of the Revolutionary War that was granted in 1832. Thomas was one of the two illiterate people in the household because he signed his document with a mark. In the 1850 census, Thomas was about 86 years old but was listed as 90 and illiterate.

As stated previously, the census record of Thomas Hogg is generally supported by the Gloucester land and personal property tax records. Although not always precise, all men 21 years and older were listed in the personal property tax record, and Thomas was first listed in 1788 and last listed in 1851. This suggests that he may have died around 1852.

Charles Edgar Hogge gathered many documents about his Hogg and Thomas families including his special war veteran ancestor Thomas Hogg. He furnished a list of Thomas’s sons that was generally accepted by the Hogg researchers in the adjacent chart. However, no evidence is available to support this list except that Thomas was living in the household of Warner in the 1850 census. There is a marriage record of James W. Hogg in 1870 that lists his parents as Thomas and Milly Hogg. However, it is unlikely that Thomas would have two sons named James. Also, who were his daughters?

Revolutionary War Pensions

Following the war, military pensions were given to disabled veterans, but in 1832, pensions were offered to all war veterans by the US Congress. Wiki online expresses it as follows:

The pension act of 1832 allowed pensions again based on service and enabled a veteran’s widow to receive pension benefits. The pension act of 1832 made Revolutionary War Pensions available to all veterans who served during the war for at least six months in any of the armed forces—Regular or Continental Army, State Militia, Navy and certain contract positions, such as teamsters—not just disabled veterans and those who had served in the Continental Army. In addition to Federal pensions, nine states, including Virginia, enacted pension laws.

Thomas Hogg accepted this offer and applied for his pension in 1832. In 1851, he applied for and received an increase in his pension. At the age of fifteen, Thomas had enlisted in the militia based near Gloucester Town (Gloucester Point) and served for serval months until the surrender of the British in Yorktown. Although there were no official records of his service, he and others described their service under oath to the court and were granted their pensions. In 1976, Gloucester County published a booklet entitled Revolutionary War Roster, Gloucester County, Virginia that documents Thomas Hogg’s statements under oath. The booklet states:

Thomas Hogg, entered the service under the command of Captain Gibson Cluverius [3]

of the Virginia Militia in Gloucester County before he was 16 years old. He was stationed near the mouth of the York River. His next services were at Gloucester Towne where he served under Captain Iddings of the Artillery. He served in Williamsburg for 8 months. He was brought to Yorktown and served at that place and Seawell’s Ordinary in Gloucester County for 2 months; He was in regular service at Perrins in the Militia when Lord Cornwallis surrendered. Certificate of Pension was issued April 26, 1833, Pension of survivor 5566. On April 24, 1851, Thomas Hogg applied for an increase in his pension, at which time he was receiving $50.00 per annum; increase in pension was granted, Pension of survivor Secretary of War, 1835. (Eck.; Gwathmey, p. 383; Ironmonger, pp 455-56)

The recorded statement of Thomas is transcribed below:

State of Virginia County of Gloucester

On this 6 day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court before the justice of the court of Gloucester now sitting. Thomas Hogg a resident of Gloucester County and state of Virginia age sixty-eight years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress assessed June 7th 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the command of Captain Gibson Cluverius of the Virginia Militia in the County of Gloucester and State of Virginia before he was sixteen years old and served under him from time to time until after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.

He served at one time continuously for several months when the British Man of War, the Bonetoe (sp?) came up the York River in 1781.

At the time of the siege at York the company in which he was attached was stationed on the eastern side of Sarah’s Creek at Perrin’s a short distance from Gloucester Town watching

the movements of the British forces at that place.

That he served in all at least two years, but was never in a regular action, though he was in a smart skirmish with the Light Horse a little above Gloucester Town near Llewellen’s. [4] His services were chiefly in Gloucester, but was twice sent to York and Williamsburg.

Belonging to the state militia he was at all times liable to be called out and was accordingly from time to time. That no discharge was ever granted and of course he has none to produce but in evidence of his service he refers to the annexed Certificates of Witnesses.

He hereby relinquishes every claim to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. Sworn to and subscribed this day and year aforesaid.

In April of 1833, Thomas Hogg was required to clarify statements in his pension application in 1832 before William K. Perrin [7], a Justice of the Peace. Maj. William Kennon Perrin’s family owned Little England on Sarah’s Creek from which Thomas Hogg’s unit was able to observe to the British at Gloucester Town and some events across the York River. The transcript follows:

On this 20th day of April 1833 personally appeared before William K. Perrin, justice of the peace for the County of Gloucester and the State of Virginia, Thomas Hogg who has sworn to the above declaration, and made oath that he did not intend to be understood as saying that he served in the militia a tour at Gloucester Town of nine months and another in Williamsburg of eight months, but that his meaning was this; that he served three tours at Gloucester Town under said officers. And that though he did not serve a tour of eight

4 Christopher Llewellen is listed in the Gloucester tax records and assessed for one acre of land, apparently a public business. His granddaughter Catherine married John Woodland and produced the Woodlands of Gloucester for many generations.

5 Caleb Jenkins, b. ~1857, d. ~1840, received his pension on Mar 4, 1831. He was listed in the Gloucester 1820 and 1830 census “on the island.” His son James Kaleb Jenkins married Frances J. Green in 1862.

6 Lewis Stokes [Stoakes], b. ~1760, was listed in the Gloucester 1820 census and in the personal property tax records in the 1830s. He received his pension on Mar 4, 1831

7 Maj. William Kennon Perrin, b. 1784 and d. 1855, was the son of John Perrin and Elizabeth Carter Kennon. He married first to Frances Burwell Page and second to Sarah Tayloe Wormeley.

Thomas Hogg placed his mark at the bottom of a documents that appeared to be a form with space for names and pertinent information to be entered. From the photocopy of the first paragraph is shown below, “6” is entered in the first space, August 1832 is

entered in the second, Thomas Hogg is entered in the third, and sixty eight is in the last space. This suggests that there were numerous veterans making the same statement of service. In fact, the Gloucester County booklet gives the same application by John Dobson. He was older than Thomas Hogg and entered his service at an earlier date. Witnesses for John Dobson were Lewis Stokes and Thomas Hogg. [8]

The booklet entitled Revolutionary War Roster, Gloucester County, Virginia also gave the document from the Captain Gibson Cluverius file about Thomas Hogg.

Thomas Hogg, affidavit given in Gloucester, Nov. 1, 1850, aged "90 the 22nd of Jan. last." Stated:

That ... the applicant, the said Thomas Hogg served a considerable time in said war, in the militia under the said Gibson Cluverius as his captain, and that the said Cluverius had Thomas Powell as the 1st Lieutenant of his company.

The said Gibson Cluverius, to the best recollection of the applicant, was first called out with his company in actual service in the year 1776, and was frequently after in the militia service, principally in the county of Gloucester though sometimes out of it.

That is consequence of the exposed situation of this county, the militia was frequently (called out) and for continued tours in actual service.

The traditional school annuals are a valuable source for the identification of local

residents during their school years. In the 1920s, Gloucester published two annuals: The 1923 Triannual Annual for all three high schools, Achilles, Botetourt, and Hayes and the 1928 Dual Annual for Achilles and Botetourt. However, during the great economic depression of the 1930s, no funds were available to publish annuals for the county high schools. Following the depression, the high school annual tradition was revived. Therefore, the 1936 student information in this article substitutes for a school annual.

Descendents of Augustine Warner, Famous Cousins of the Rochat Family

By L. Roane Hunt

On July 1, 2019, Raymond A. Rochat submitted a package containing his genealogical

research documenting how he descended from Augustine Warner, an early recipient of a land patent in Gloucester County in the Virginia Colony. He determined that he was an eleventh generation from Augustine Warner I (1611-1674). The following chart as determined by Raymond shows the line of descent of his from Augustine Warner:

Raymond also provided the lines of descent from Augustine Warner for four famous individuals: Gen. Robert E. Lee, Pres. George Washington, Queen Elizabeth II, and Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The date of birth and death were given by Raymond.

An analysis of Raymond’s research can be summarized in the following chart that shows how each famous cousin is related to him and their common ancestor within the Warner family. He and Gen. Robert E. Lee were related as fifth cousins four times removed (5th cousins, 4x removed), and their common ancestor was Augustine Warner I. Also, he and Pres. George Washington and Queen Elizabeth II were related with the common ancestor of Augustine Warner II. Finally, he was related to Meriwether Lewis with the

Since Raymond and Meriwether Lewis share the common ancestor of the third generation of the Warner family, Meriwether is the closest famous relative to Raymond, and General Robert E. stationed for one year at the mouth of the York River, in the lower part of the county of Gloucester, and about two years before the siege of little York.

That sometime before the siege of the York the company of the said Gibson was ordered from Williamsburg to the neighborhood of Gloucester Towne, in the county where it was stationed and in actual service for six months more.

That during the three last mentioned tours, to wit: at Williamsburg, Gloucester Towne, and at the mouth of the York River, the said Gibson Cluverius was in actual command of his company.

This too must have been a form that did not give the true account of Thomas Hogg’s service. If he was “called out” in 1776, Thomas would have been only twelve.

When the British held Gloucester Town, the Guinea teenagers were probably an important asset in monitoring the enemy on both sides of the York River. I am sure they could move around on land and water and not be considered a threat. Also, if they had the true Guinea accent, they may have considered them to be British.
