Welcome

Welcome to the summer issue of The Family Directory.

We have lots on over the summer and I remember that six whole weeks off school seems like an eternity for some. So will it be sunny days on the beach, eating 99s and trying not to get sand in the egg sandwiches, or will it be a full packed day out? See Top Things To Do This Summer page 22.

Mandy from The Wight Studio had a great morning shoot with our front cover stars Jake and Toby. So if you would like your child or children to be the front cover star of the winter directory see page 40 and 44.

My children are growing up fast and I am well aware of the information I needed when they were young and what I need to know now. So I hope that this directory makes the role as a Mother, Father or Carer easier by linking many more services to parents. If you know of a club or group, run an event, or have a business that offers services to families please contact us for your FREE listing on our website.

Our website www.thefamilydirectory.co.uk is growing and changing all the time. You will find an online calendar of things to do. The news page is updated every week and this is all available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Also join us on Facebook. Find us at The Family Directory and become a fan or find us on Twitter. We love hearing your news and ideas. To add your information please emails us at [email protected] it’s FREE so let’s hear from you.

Whenever you use the directory, please mention you saw the advert in The Family Directory.

It’s so easy to advertise with The Family Directory Please call or email for a media pack. If you don’t tell families about your school, club, group or services they will not know about you. If you want more business then tell parents what you have to offer. Our advertising costs, starting for as little as £20, really does offer you value for money. Our directories are produced 3 times a years and we print between 18,000 - 20,000 copies each issue.

Have a happy summer and enjoy the special times with your children!

Ventnor Mum Defies the Recession and gets the Isle of Wight Toddle biking!

Ventnor mum of one, Melissa Ayling has defied the recession by launching a new venture for Toddlers and their families on the Isle of Wight just in time for summer. Faced with the reality of cutbacks and rising bills, Melissa identified a new business opportunity and has secured the sole rights to bring “Toddlebike” to the Island.

Melissa was introduced to Toddlebike by her 18 month old daughter when visiting a baby & toddler show on the mainland last year. “As soon as Megan tried the Toddlebike she was hooked – so the Toddlebike came home with us and has been ridden daily since then”

After seeing how enthusiastic Megan was about the toy and realising there is nothing comparable available to Toddlers, Melissa contacted Jo Hockley, the Sussex-based owner of Toddlebike to discuss launching Toddlebike on the Island. For more information about Toddlebikes, please contact Melissa at [email protected] or visit the website www.toddlebike.co.uk.

This Spring the Family Directory ran a online competition with ‘Portsmouth Historic Dockyard the dockyard gave 3 families tickets this is one of the winners review.

Our Trip to the Dockyard

On Tuesday we went on a trip to the Historic Dockyards it was so much fun. Our favourite activity was the Action Stations, there was a climbing wall and lots of different simulators and exciting things to explore.

It was fascinating because there were lots of things to do, as well as finding out about life on board ship. We also thought going on HMS victory was very interesting (we can’t believe Nelson actually slept in that cot!)We thought one of the cannon tools was a like a giant loo cleaner! We thought the name of one of the decks (poop deck) was quite funny, but very interesting. By Lily and Tallulah Shepherdly and William Morris

Oliver Arnell Winner The Family English Heritage tickets to Carisbrooke Castle

In half term me and my family went to Carisbrooke Castle after winning the competition. When we arrived I went into the museum. My favourite thing was the coin trebuchet fire a coin at King Charles. Then we went and saw Jigsaw the donkey on the wheel ( he was very cute). After that we played on the cannons and walked up to the keep which was 77 steps! It was hard work.

It was a really fun day. Thank you The Family Directory. By Oliver Arnell.

Competition Winners Our winner for the family ticket to travel with Hovertravel to Mozzarella Joe’s Southsea was Zachary Ward the winners of the English Heritage family day out tickets to Royal Osborne was Jack Charge and the family ticket to Carisbrooke Castle was Oliver Arnell.

Winner Jack Charge Thank you for the tickets for Royal Osborne. We had a lovely day. I took my Mum, my brother and my grandparents. This is a photo of me and my brother outside Osborne house. We looked around the house and learnt a lot about Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children. The house was extraordinary with furniture and paintings as they would have been in Victorian times. There was a pony and trap to ride on and we took a minibus down to a chalet that was built for the royal children to play in.

The gardens were lovely and we took lots of photos. There were lots of statues and fountains. I would recommend for anybody to visit.

Winner Zachary Ward with his brother Yens Ward who won the Hovertravel and Mozzarella Joes tickets.

I was very excited when I found out I had won the tickets. When we got on the Hovercraft it went up really high, and then it started sliding down the concrete. When we hit the water it was choppy, it was really fun! Mozzarella Joe’s had a pretty good view straight across the Solent. I had some chicken nuggets and chips, it tasted really nice. We walked back to the hovercraft and got back to Ryde really quickly. We would love to do it again! Thank you Zachary.

Rhythm Time

RHYTHM TIME is a really enjoyable experience for children, but it’s much more than just a sing-along. It’s a well thought out MUSICAL EXPERIENCE using lots of fun songs and activities helping a child’s development and life skills.

Children learn in different ways and are at different stages developmentally. To enhance their experience in our sessions, Rhythm Time offers different music courses for BABIES, TODDLERS and PRESCHOOL age children.

Using a VARIETY OF EQUIPMENT we make our sessions interactive and fun. Learning to share percussion instruments, shakers, bells, rhythm sticks, chime bars, balls, hoops, mirrors, scarves, lycra etc… we also have very important listening time with RATATAT.

Joining a musical activity with others is a wonderful experience for all ages. Week by week, as they develop, so does their CONFIDENCE, CREATIVITY and COORDINATION. Mums, dads, grandparents and childminders all enjoy and appreciate what we set out to achieve with the children in their care.

We’ve opened NEW Cowes and Newport sessions adding to our existing thriving sessions. We hope soon to open sessions in West Wight and Sandown areas. Also we offer sessions for Birthday Parties, Toddler Groups, Nurseries and Preschools. Book your FREE TRIAL call 07950 501763 or via our website www.rhythmtime.net

Dance with A Difference™ Linda and Ken Smith are proud to announce the launch of Dance with A Difference™, on 1st July 2011. The winner In “The Best New Activity for Children” Category. in the prestigious What’s On 4 Little Ones.

Dance with A Difference™ is a totally new concept in dance using music, movement and mime, where children have so much fun. They don’t even realise they’re learning which in turn encourages a lifelong passion in physical movement. All programmes of Dance with A Difference™ are specifically formulated to fully support, compliment and reinforce the government OFSTED learning guidelines of The Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Linda (Founder of DWAD™ ) says: “Dance with A Difference™ has evolved over a period of 12 years. During those years, I have been in close consultation with nursery, pre-school, play school teachers and OFSTED inspectors, and with original music, designed programmes which all conform and compliment the government OFSTED, Early Years Foundation Stage and key stage 1 requirements, and is now ready to be made available to the general public to teach in Early Years Providers Settings under license.

More and more of us are joining structured swimming classes or heading to the local pool with our babies and toddlers. Our little ones love being in water and the sense of freedom it gives them. As well as, just as importantly, learning the potentially lifesaving skill of swimming from a young age. Baby swimming originally evolved out of a desire to ensure that babies are safe and confident in water. However, the exercises used to teach this confidence - gentle rocking, reaching for objects, kicking movements and learning to respond to commands - also provide the perfect stimulation for your baby’s brain. With this in mind come and swim with Water Babies the UK’s leading baby swimming experts and winners of four national awards as “best national Baby and toddler activity”. Water Babies have created a course that will teach your child a core life skill, confidence in the water and ultimately the ability to swim. Classes provide a structured and stimulating activity for your baby and you using Word association, games, songs and tons of fun.

Water Babies Isle of Wight now have their very own Isle of Wight based Instructor Jo Hobbs.

“I was that impressed with the lessons that I have taken both my Children Imogen and Joshua to the Mainland for their Water Babies lessons for the last 4 years. I am now extremely excited to have become the first Isle of Wight Water Babies Instructor” Jo Hobbs

E J Matyjaszek BA (Oxon) Principal Head of Priory School

A Family Enviroment

What distinguished Priory School for me when I took it over in March 2009 was the family atmosphere. On enrolling my younger son in 2005, I noticed the closeness of the teachers to the pupils, and the demeanour and spirit of the children. There was a core of concern that meant the children felt secure and valued.

What I did not know in detail until I took over in 2009 was the calibre of the teaching staff, qualified professionals who bring to bear a wide range of experience from some of the best schools on the island, the mainland and overseas. Among its number are an ex-headmaster, an MBE and the winner of a National Science Teaching Award.

This same calibre of staff allowed me to open a 6th Form in September 2010 which has just completed its first very successful year; purchase a second school bus for the increasing demand we have experienced across the island; and develop proper team sports such as netball, football, cricket, tag rugby and athletics, while also forming a school choir that won its first cup at the Music Festival this year.

Much development work has been done; more is being planned. We have recently enrolled our 100th pupil, but the key to the school remains what it was, which is the web of relationships and rules that means it functions with an almost family care for each pupil at its centre, underpinned by a clear Christian ethos.

Peter Hopkinson Junior School Head of Portsmouth Grammar School

Peter Hopkinson was busy preparing for a career in the media working in a sports and art centre near Torronto in Canada, when he first discovered he wanted to teach. “I was teaching children how to use video cameras in the editing suites, so they could make their own videos and I actually found I enjoyed the teaching more than the video work.” After four summers in Canada, Peter’s passion for teaching grew, inspiring him to take his PGCE. Peter went on to become Head at Aldford School (Abbey Gate College) in Chester and then at Arnold Junior School, before joining Portsmouth Grammar School in January, fulfilling an ambition to become a head teacher at one of the largest and best independent junior schools in the country. “Since starting at Portsmouth Grammar School I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of being Head of such a large school; there are distinct differences compared to my previous headships, at smaller schools. Leading such a large and supportive community has been an exhilarating experience so far, both personally and professionally”. Peter is particularly passionate about the strong sense of community at Portsmouth Grammar School, believing it is this sense of community that ensures every pupil achieves their full potential at the school. “We encourage the children to be proud of their school and we value greatly the role they play as a member of the PGS community. This ethos starts in nursery and continues through their educational journey here, at the end of sixth form; it was lovely to see the nursery children visit our newly built, state of the art science block recently and there are countless opportunities for the children to feel part of the school community that transcend the every day, an example being the half termly family beach cleans at Hayling Island. These opportunities enrich the educational experience for our children and are invaluable.” As well as the school’s community values, Peter is proud of the opportunities the children are offered to enhance their own personal development. Children are offered numerous enhancements to their daily curriculum; sailing, swimming, strings and brass lessons are all part of the curriculum, whilst performing arts afternoons provide the opportunity for every junior child to take part in a musical production. For more information about the school please call 023 9236 0036 or see advert page 15

Henry Phillips Head of Hordle Walhampton School, Lymington

Never has the Island seemed so close

Once a gentlemen’s billiard room in what was an imposing 18th century private house, the room that is now my study enjoys, as indeed do I, an uninterrupted view across lawns, playing fields, a golf course and The Solent to the Isle of Wight. It appears almost close enough to touch and I defy all-comers to have a better view.

Such a view defines this wonderful prep school that has over the years developed strong associations with the Island. So many of its children have made, and continue to make, the short sea crossing, some daily, others weekly, in order to enjoy an environment and education that is the stepping stone towards a lifetime of learning.

Hordle Walhampton is justifiably proud of the achievements of our Island pupils and those that have joined us have thrived in an environment that celebrates art, music and drama as well as offering a huge range of sports and activities; including an all-weather surface, riding centre, large, purpose-built sports hall, rifle range, three fishing and sailing lakes, cricket pitches and nets and swimming pool.

A strong academic ethos has given the school well-established links with senior schools such as Winchester College, Bryanston, Harrow, St Swithun’s, Downe House, Canford and Clayesmore, to name just a few. This has resulted in many of our pupils, including those from the Island, gaining impressive scholarship and Common Entrance results; as one of our past pupils once said: “this is a school where it’s cool to be clever’.

Finally, being both a day and a boarding school is an intrinsic part of Hordle Walhampton and Island children, and their parents, benefit greatly from both our full and flexible boarding options. All this and just five minutes from the ferry. (See advert page 14).

Sally Davies Head of Fiveways, Ryde School

Fiveways Ryde

Being the Head of Fiveways is a super job! I am lucky enough to have been teaching at Ryde School since 1988, and in 1991 I began the process of re-locating the Pre-Prep department into the wonderful building we now occupy.

We have undergone considerable renovation and extension and Fiveways truly feels like my second home. I am proud to be able to offer a light, bright and fully equipped setting where children from the age of three can enjoy a happy and structured introduction to school life. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching Fiveways children develop and progress as they romp through the activities of the school year.

From our extensive academic curriculum to swimming, shows, trips and activities; we have so much to offer at Fiveways - the happy children who tumble through the door each morning show me that our recipe is definitely working! I am, however, not complacent and we are constantly working to build on our high standards to ensure that Fiveways remains one of the best Pre-Prep schools in the South-East.

I am always delighted to meet parents and their children to show them all that Fiveways has to offer. Do, please, telephone the office to make an appointment - I look forward to meeting you in person!

Let your child learn and succeedwith Kumon’s maths and English study programmes

We all know the importance of maths and English. It has been widely shown, for instance, that young people with better literacy and numeracy skills are far more likely to succeed in gaining good employment and fulfilling their potential later in life.

At the Cowes and Sandown study centres, leading supplementary education provider Kumon offers maths and English study programmes which are tailored to your child’s age and ability. Kumon’s unique method focuses on your child as an individual, providing them with transferable skills like confidence and the ability to learn for themselves.

Through working at their own pace with guidance and support, your child will acquire an excellent grounding in maths and English as well as fundamental learning skills such as accuracy, time management, concentration and independence in study.

Kumon is also ideal as a complement to whatever children may be doing at school. Not only are maths and English key to academic success, but the study skills and self-learning abilities they gain through the Kumon programmes will stand them in good stead for adult life, as well as for the pressures of homework, coursework and timed exams.

For more information or to enrol, call Cowes and Sandown Kumon Instructor Harry Vernon on 01983 853 643 or visit www.kumon.co.uk/cowes or email [email protected]

How do you manage your time? By Alex Tana

Ever moaned about being too busy with work or family or the things you love? Or about the lack of time to rest or for some “Me time”? Time is a flexible commodity and it’s up to you to choose and decide how best to manage it. So here are some quick tips for you (for more support just get in touch):

1. Declutter ~ Look at what you do: is it really all necessary? Work smarter not harder!

2. Set goals ~ What are you trying to achieve? Clear goals will give direction and motivation.

3.Prioritize ~ Select tasks in order of what is most urgent and most important, not on what you like doing best!

4. Plan ~ Allocate tasks according to priority, your other commitments, your energy level and allow the right time for each task.

5. Be flexible ~ Don’t feel guilty if things go wrong, just adjust your plans and carry on.

5. Reward yourself ~ If you do well then... reward yourself as this will reinforce habit and motivation.

Cowes Chiropractic Clinic

Faking It?!

Parents often say that they were not sure if their child really had a problem or was just looking for attention. In 15 years of chiropractic paediatric practice I have never come across a child that had invented their pain. Kids have more interesting ways of using their time!

It is not normal for children to suffer from headaches and if the common causes (dehydration, fatigue, eyestrain) have been eliminated then it may well be that their neck is out of alignment. Muscle spasm in the neck can also make it difficult for a child to concentrate and if the cause was birth trauma they may not even know they’ve got spasm and discomfort- it’s been there all their life.........

“Growing pains” or leg cramps are often a sign that the pelvis is out of alignment – adult patients with long term lower back problems will often tell me they suffered as a child.

So, please listen to, and observe, your children and if they are uncomfortable - get a McTimoney chiropractor to check them over.

Anna, Jeremy, Maya and Joss Why do you like living in Wootton Bridge? It’s so central! We moved here to be near the childrens’ school but now find it incredibly handyfor getting anywhere on the Island.

Favourite Local ParkPuckpool is a huge favourite with our children - it’s the winning combination of climbing frame, zip wire and funky swings. We like to park at Appley then walk/cycle there along Ryde seafront.

Favourite Local Club / ClassJane McGregor’s swimming academy in Ryde has been a great favourite ever since Maya was a baby.

Favourite Child – Friendly Restaurant We’ve always loved The Bonchurch Inn for its quirky, family-run charm and good food. The Italian owners never fail to welcome children with open arms - and the risotto and pasta dishes are spot on after a run around the Botantical Gardens in nearby Ventnor.

Favourite Place on the IslandWootton Creek. It’s hard to beat launching our Mirror dinghy from the bottom of the garden and slipping off for a few hours around the Creek.

Best Children’s Book‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper. Sweet story told in delicious lyrical language, ccompanied by beautiful and amusing illustrations.

Favourite Beach.I’m not going to give away our absolute favourite (sorry!) but one beach we go back to time and time again is Steephill Cove in Ventnor.
