I want to thank Trish Miller and Linda Langham for their hard work and many hours of planning and design to give FCC a new tool to reach out to our friends, clients and community about what God is doing through FCC. The Family Counseling Center has grown greatly over the past 13 years from a small office with one counselor to four offices with nine Christian counselors. This growth could not be accomplished without the prayers and many hours of selfless work by our Board of Directors and Board Chairman Ron Fuller. Our current board meets every other month to lend their expertise to the mission of FCC. They also help market and build financial support for the ministries/services of FCC. Our Board Chairman and I meet weekly for over two hours to help build a strong organization and a better equipped Executive Director. Over the past two years the Center has grown faster than at any other time in our history. This growth could not have been accomplished without a great support person. That person is Shelia Robertson. Her caring, loving attitude and professional office skills are second to none. She is literally the voice of FCC-- the first contact most people have with us. Shelia has been able to manage all of our offices and counselors, but with increasing difficulty due to the growth of the Center. In October we hired Trish Miller to work with and under the direction of Shelia, to help manage the growing work load. Trish will also work as our project coordinator especially for our newsletter and new website. I believe God has provided FCC with a great staff, whose hearts are geared to the hurting in our area. I am very excited about our new counselors that have joined FCC. Jennifer Loh, Trish Miller, and just this past week, Angie Rogers has joined our staff and will serve in our Winchester office. These join a staff of wonderful counselors: Jerry Jochem, Rhonda Saylor, Cynthia Cox, and Linda Langham. Together FCC can boldly move into the future to make a difference in the lives of those hurting, lonely, and depressed in Southern Middle Tennessee For me it is a joy to serve where God’s love is shown each and everyday. Please keep FCC and everyone serving here in your daily prayers. In Christ, David O. FAMILY COUNSELING CENTER

It’s been a long time coming but our news letter is finally here.

• 900+ people die each year by suicide in Tennessee There are two times as many suicides in Tennessee as homicides Suicide is the 9th leading cause of death in Tennessee A suicide note is left in 20-25% of all cases Rural areas experience higher suicide rates Majority of suicide victims in Tennessee are male Four times more males kill themselves than females Three times more females will attempt suicide Up to 90% of people who commit or attempt suicide suffer from Depression Alcohol is involved in 50% of all suicides Surviving family members are at a higher risk for emotional problems and

    suicide

You may be asking yourself…Okay now what, how do I know if somebody is in danger, how can I help, what can I do? Two of our own counselors attended a training on Suicide Prevention presented by the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. Suicide prevention is the “CPR of Mental Health” and is intended to offer hope to an individual who is struggling, not to fix or treat them. The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network has developed the Question, Persuade, and Refer Technique to assist in getting a loved one the help they desperately need. The most important thing you can do is ask the questions, listen to what is being said, and refer them to the appropriate place for help.

Tips for asking the Questions~ Plan a time and place to talk to the individual in a private setting Allow individual to speak freely and openly Don’t judge the individual…we do not know how or what they are feeling. Don’t rush…it takes time for someone to open up and trust

Tips for Listening~ Give your full attention and patience…Do Not interrupt them Don’t judge, belittle, or argue with them Remind them of natural supports in their life Let them know they are not alone

Tips for Referring~ Personally take the individual for help Give them a list of referrals and follow-up Get a commitment that they will seek help Most Important…Never Leave a Suicidal Person Alone!

    Our Service Men and Women

Welcome to the Family Counseling Center of Middle Tennessee

What Makes the Family Counseling Center different?

We are a non-profit Christian counseling center. We are not affiliated with any denomination and offer services to all kinds of people regardless of

    faith or religious background

Our focus is not on generating profits but on providing needed professional services for the communities we serve. Most of our clients pay for services

    themselves.

We seek and accept donations as a means to offset the cost of providing professional services to clients who are unable to pay.

If you would like to receive our newsletter or add someone to our prayer list, please contact FCC at

931.723.0380 or by email at [email protected].
