I hope you enjoy the results of our “Day in theLife” photo competition, a 24-hour period lastApril when we invited members of the SNHUcommunity to take photos that offered glimpsesinto the life of the university. We weren’t lookingfor viewbook photos alone. We also wanted pho-tos that captured moments of solitude or evenpain alongside the celebratory or joyful. Theaward winners’ photos are hanging in the MilesRoom of the Dining Hall and are just wonderful. Ihave heard people comment on the close-up ofthe green phone and fingernails, capturing theiconic act of the young: text messaging. Ormusing on the haunting “SOS” photo or theloneliness of the athlete walking off the dark-ened playing field. There is also the delight ofone of our amazing online students, Jenn Allen,playing with one of the kids in the Mexico Cityslum where she was volunteering.

On page after page of the magazine you willfind evidence of what is so special about auniversity. It is the transforming power ofeducation, giving students the tools tochange their lives and to make the worlda better place. We are glad to have youjoin us in that work.

Dear friends and supporters of SNHU,

The Fall 2011 issue of The Extra Mile celebrateson its cover one of the quiet success storiesof the university: our ongoing efforts to gogreen. As is often the case, that work beganwith our students, the first generation of kidsto grow up separating plastic from glass andmetal, when they demanded to know why wewere not recycling on campus.

Now, some six years later, we have an expan-sive recycling effort, a program to retrofit bath-rooms with water-saving fixtures and a bikesign-out program, and have won two EPA

awards for our large-scale purchase ofrenewable energy. Our new buildingsfollow LEED guidelines, our landscapinguses only organics, and we are testingfor geothermal and photovoltaic fields.

Once again, profound change happenswhen young people ask, “Why not?”

One such young person is recent graduateAshley Gargano, appearing in these pagesas the winner of a prestigious NewmanFellowship. Ashley exemplifies the spiritof service that has come to mark theuniversity and her generation.

My Top 5“I just kind of want to do everything,”Megan Paddack says.

To accommodate that desire, Paddackcollects certifications.

Paddack’s first certification came early,sometime during high school, as a meansto better her standing at her summer job.

“I was a camp counselorand working down bythe water was thebest, so I took a life-guarding courseand got certified,”she says.

The next summerPaddack taught

canoeing.

Then the certifications began to pile up:Small Craft Safety. CPR. WildernessFirst Response. By the time she leftcollege, she had quite the collection.

“If there is an opportunity, I am going totake it,” Paddack says. “A lot of timesmy certifications came out of the desireto do something, but then needing apiece of paper to do it. So having thecertification is cool, but what’s even better is having the experience.”

Here are Paddack’s Top Five certifica-tions, ranked by the experiences theyhelped her have along the way.

Ordained MinisterThe fact that I can marry people is prob-ably my favorite. I absolutely love doingweddings. You get to be a little part ofthe couple’s future. I have done eightweddings so far, all friends and family,and I have two more coming up this fall.And all I had to do was go online, fill outa form and pay a small fee.

American Red Cross Certifications (Lifeguarding,First Aid, Water Safety, Small Craft Safety)All of those certifications in high schooland college … led to me becominghead of the small craft department at the summer camp I worked at. Youdidn’t need any particular certificationto be head, but I was best qualifiedbecause of my certification. So I got to spend my summers on the laketeaching swimming, canoeing, sailingand lifeguarding classes.

Wilderness EMTFirst, I had to get certified as an EMT,which took about a year. Then I tackedon a weeklong course for the wildernesspart. The class was in November and itwas a cold November, at that. I remem-ber being out there in the pouring raindoing a mock rescue. I really felt like ifI didn’t find the person in the next 10minutes, they were going to be dead.

BartenderI was in high school when I got this certification. My mom taught at LaconiaCommunity College, so I could takecourses for free. My first college coursewas bartending. That was my first collegecredit. And 11 years later I had earnedmy Ph.D.

Football CoachThis was one of my more difficult certifications. In the last class, I wasthe only girl. The other students in the class all thought they could justkick back and coast through, but I disrupted their dreams because I was there to learn. They really made it difficult for me. The funny thing is,you don’t actually have to be certifiedto coach football, but you can get certified. So that is just what I did.

A Day in the Life of SNHU

Photographers – amateur and professional – were invited to document the life of the university community April 26.During that 24-hour period, participants were encouraged to capture images that touched on themes such as quiet, joy, pain, celebration, solitude, culture, enlightenment and more.

“We asked for people to go beyond conventional viewbookphotos with shots of the unseen, rarely captured, the unusualand even the painful,” President Paul LeBlanc said. “We gave

weight to the emotional and compelling, though technique andtechnical expertise were also taken into account.”

The judges were LeBlanc, McIninch Art Gallery DirectorDebbie Disston, then Marketing and Communications VicePresident Martha Rush-Mueller, professional photographerLarry Dunn and student Andrea Thomas.

Submissions were assessed without names attached, resultingin one double winner and one triple winner.

Graduate Earns Newman CivicFellow HonorAshley Gargano ’11 was recently namedto the first group of Newman CivicFellows, an honor that recognizes herability and motivation to create lastingchange in the world.

The Rhode Island resident, now acommunity support coach for a non-profit agency, was one of 135 studentsfrom 30 states, representing more than1,100 colleges and universities, to benamed a fellow.

The award honors Dr. Frank Newman,a founder of the Campus Compact, acoalition of institutions of higherlearning dedicated to promoting civic involvement.

Gargano had her first taste of servicelearning in a freshman sociology classat SNHU that matched her with adultrefugees and immigrants who neededhelp learning English. She and aclassmate ran a coat drive on campusafter noticing that refugee and immi-grant children lacked winter coats.

By junior year, Gargano had become theservice learning program coordinator forthe Center for Service & CommunityInvolvement. During her senior year,she spent 15 days in South Africa on“alternative break,” helping rebuild asafe house for abused girls.

As a Newman Civic Fellow, Garganoplans to network with peers, attendconferences and apply what she learnsat home.

She also wants to encourage studentsto follow in her footsteps.

“Volunteering really grounds you andmakes you go on the right path,” shesays.

SNHU Earns CarnegieClassificationThe Carnegie Foundation for theAdvancement of Teaching selectedSNHU for its 2010 CommunityEngagement Classification. Collegesand universities with an institutionalfocus on community engagement wereinvited to apply for the classification.

SNHU’s civic engagement includes serv-ice-learning with Manchester children,raising unprecedented funds for UnitedWay agencies, providing accounting andtechnical assistance to fledgling not-for-profits, and continuing to assist theHaitian community in the wake of thatcountry’s disasters. University communi-ty members have volunteered in manycapacities, including rebuilding in theGulf region, working in orphanages andbringing technology into townshipschools in South Africa.

“Our learning has local and globalimpact when we recognize that the community is a ’living textbook’ with so much to teach us. Public scholarshipand service make education significant,”said SNHU Provost Patricia Lynott. “Weare proud that our faculty has, to date,engaged more than 700 students in thiskind of active learning. The CarnegieClassification makes us aspire to evengreater accomplishments.”

SNHU was one of 115 colleges anduniversities selected.

Carnegie stated that SNHU’s applicationdocumented excellent alignment amongmission, culture, leadership, resourcesand practices that support dynamic andnoteworthy community engagement.

Celebrate 10 Years of Art SNHU’s McIninch Art Gallery Anniversary Schedule

The McIninch Art Gallery was founded 10years ago in April as a resource to benefitthe entire university community. Madepossible by a generous gift from TheMcIninch Foundation, it has served in partas a symbol of the university’s growingcommitment to the liberal arts.

The grand opening exhibition in February2002 began a cycle of six to seven shows ayear in a wide range of genres, styles and

media. Shows may coordinate with a varietyof demonstrations, lectures, concerts andother events.

Located in Robert Frost Hall, the gallery alsohas been building a permanent collection ofart supporting the university’s curricula andproviding a source of enjoyment, enlighten-ment and beauty to all who visit.

Arts & Sciences“When I was hired back in 1977, I was told there would never evenbe an English major, let alone aschool devoted to the liberal arts,”says Dr. Bob Begiebing, an Englishprofessor and the founder of theMaster of Fine Arts program whoretired last spring.

Back then, all general educationcourses – including English, com-position and the humanities – werepart of the School of Business, a farcry from the full-fledged schoolthat is celebrating its 10th anniver-sary this year.

Internal RevolutionsThroughout the ’70s, young sol-diers returning from the VietnamWar were going back to school withthe help of the GI Bill. And thebusiness-centric education SNHU,then New Hampshire College,offered was a hot commodity. Butas the ’70s turned into the ’80s, theeconomy faltered and governmentmoney started to run dry.

If the college was to survive, itwould have to expand beyond theboundaries of its existing model.Those faculty members whoworked in service of accountingcurriculums and better businesspractices were in a unique posi-tion to transform the college’simage from the inside out.

“It was very satisfying to startteaching Business Composition –basically a course in how to write

a letter – and then, some 10 yearslater, begin to teach English liter-ature and eventually even ahumanities course,” said Dr.Robert Craven, who also joinedthe faculty in 1977.

Slowly but surely, the LiberalArts Division was born.

Continued GrowthUnder former Dean RobertaSalper and current Dean KarenErickson, the School of LiberalArts really came into its own,offering courses in a number offields, from creative writing andgraphic design to environmentalmanagement and sociology.

While the three largest majorscontinue to be in the social andbehavioral sciences – psychology,justice studies and communication– the hard sciences have grown atan unprecedented clip over thelast half a decade. To honor theincreased depth and breadth ofthe school’s course offerings, theSchool of Liberal Arts changed itsname to the School of Arts andSciences last year.

Today the school offers 18 majorsand employs 45 full-time faculty.In 2011-12, SAS will offer fournew majors (mathematics, middleschool mathematics education,music education and middleschool science education), houseits first artist in residence, andteam up with the New HampshireWriter’s Project to formulate a newcolloquium on art and politics.

As Erickson, says, “By connectingthe humanities, sciences, fine arts,mathematics, technology andsocial inquiry, students preparefor a community role that is ascentral to their individual successas it is to a sustainable society.”

Faculty redesigned the college’scurriculum and course offerings. In 2000, then-President RichardGustafson unveiled plans to erect a number of new buildingson campus, including RobertFrost Hall, the future home of the School of Liberal Arts.

Foundations and FrontiersIn 2001, New Hampshire Collegebecame Southern New HampshireUniversity. That same year theSchool of Liberal Arts was born.

In 2003, the McIninch Galleryopened on campus, hosting arotating exhibition schedule while also growing the institutions’private collection.

“To have real art available on cam-pus, not just framed posters, to me,meant that we really were a Schoolof Liberal Arts. University impliessomething universal, not just a single focus. After all that time,

become more critical in the job-sheddingeconomy of the last few years. The Schoolof Business has responded by offering moreresources to would-be entrepreneurs.

Housed in the School of Business, the SNHU Center for Entrepreneurship & Social Innovation has led the effort, mostnotably by overseeing the rollout of the ToryC. Marandos Foundation EntrepreneurshipChallenge earlier this year. Made possibleby a $100,000 gift from the family ofMarandos, an entrepreneur who died

tragically in 2006 at age 30, the challenge is a business plan competition that offers active and potential New Hampshirestartups the chance to win $5,000to support their ventures.

Among 25 entrants who submit-ted two-page concept papers inthe challenge’s first year, studentMatt Charette was one of 10semifinalists an SNHU facultypanel selected to submit a fullfive-page business plan.Although he was not among the five finalists selected to present their plans, Charettereceived invaluable coachingfrom Keith Moon, the Center for Entrepreneurship & SocialInnovation’s director, he says. He also drew inspiration fromattending the finalists’ presenta-tions in June.

“It was really cool for me to seehow they were putting their entirepassion behind their idea, jumpinginto the deep end and going for it,”Charette says.

An Ashland, N.H., business,blue2green LLC, won the inauguralChallenge and its $5,000 first prize.A renewable energy consultingcompany that seeks to revive hydroelectric dams across NewHampshire, blue2green expects tobenefit not just from the prizemoney, but from the educationalresources – including Center forEntrepreneurship & SocialInnovation seminars and business

counseling sessions – made avail-able to all five finalists, says MarkBrassard, a blue2green founder andprincipal.

Along with the MarandosChallenge, the School of Businessis spearheading other new initia-tives for current and aspiringentrepreneurs. They include:

SNHU Entrepreneur Network Stephen Van Beaver ’93, a princi-pal in the Boston high-tech venturecapital firm Pilot House VenturesGroup, approached Gillett earlythis year expressing a desire toshare his expertise with SNHU students. Since then, Gillett hasassembled a group of about 20alumni entrepreneurs who haveexpressed a similar interest. Fourmembers of the fledgling network,including Van Beaver, participatedin a kickoff panel discussion onentrepreneurship in April.

Women’s Business CenterAfter the Portsmouth-based NewHampshire Women’s BusinessCenter abruptly closed in August2010, the School of Businessapplied for and received a five-year grant from the U.S. SmallBusiness Administration to open anew center at SNHU’s Manchestercampus. The Women’s BusinessCenter opened last April andoffers resources to meet the needsof women at all stages of theentrepreneurship spectrum –those starting businesses, manag-

ing established enterprises andplanning for succession, saysMaryAnn Manoogian, the center’sexecutive director.

Business AcceleratorThe Center for Entrepreneurship& Social Innovation, along with anew student club, the SNHUchapter of the national CollegiateEntrepreneurs Organization, islaunching a business acceleratorto encourage the development inNew Hampshire of knowledge-based businesses that fit intoSector 54 as defined by NorthAmerican IndustrialClassification System.

These professional, scientific andtechnical services businesses “arethe hot growth area for this state,”says Moon, who conducted a studyfor the Southern New HampshirePlanning Commission that led tothe accelerator’s formation.

The School of Business and C.E.O.plan to begin offering informational,consulting and networking eventsthis winter, club President BrandonDaugherty said.

“It will provide an opportunity forstarting entrepreneurs to meet withsuccessful entrepreneurs and makeconnections,” Daugherty said. “Thiswill help their businesses growbecause now they have a group ofpeople who can answer questionsabout running a business and givethem tips on how to succeed.”

Learning All AroundA field work program is a collaborativeeffort: A school becomes a learning center forfuture teachers, while teachers and staff men-tor the college students. Everyone benefits.

Children receive additional attention andtutoring from teachers in training, veteranteachers share their experiences and learnfrom the college professors who hold class-es in the school, and the school communitygets an infusion of new ideas.

In Auburn, SNHU education majorsassessed students, made recommendations

“I said Auburn, with K through eight, wouldbe a great site,” said Cathy Stavenger, anassociate professor in SNHU’s School ofEducation, recalling a conversation she hadwith Auburn Principal Ron Pedro. “Theyhave the younger students and the middleschool without leaving the building.”

Indeed, SNHU School of Education studentswho did their field work at the school alsotook classes there, taught by third-gradeteacher Gail Boucher, an SNHU adjunctinstructor.

Field work programs like the one in Auburnare more common in other parts of the coun-try, particularly the South, where they are

third-graders. “When you workwith the same kids, you see howthey change.”

Danielle Daniele says her son, PJ,a third grader, changed his mindabout math after working with aMath Buddy.

“He enjoys doing his homeworknow. He’s excited about learning,”the mother says. “His confidencelevel has really soared.”

Likewise, Boucher discovered an affinity for teaching collegestudents that surprised anddelighted her.

“I absolutely love it!” she says. “I share my real life experiences,give them copies of units I knowkids love, cover the GLE’s (GradeLevel Expectations).”

SNHU education majors say theSchool of Education has built suc-cess into the field work program,providing transportation and on-siteclasses in addition to the hands-onteaching experience.

“Field hours are included inclassroom time. They set it up, so there’s no choice but to suc-ceed,” says senior EmilyMongeau, an elementary educa-tion/special education major fromWestborough, Mass.

of their program,Stavenger says.

Education majorsaren’t expected tosink or swim. Fromthe beginning, theyreceive directionand support.

Stavenger says. “We always talkedat the next class: ’What happened?What did you try? What worked?What caused that problem?’”

Meanwhile, the successes wereadding up.

Parents reported improvements intheir children’s school work.Teachers said their students werereaping the benefits of an extra pairof hands in the classroom. And thecollege students were having fun.

“I love it! It’s one of the bestthings I’ve ever done,” saysJennifer Smith, an elementaryeducation/special education majorfrom Salem, Mass. “I went to adifferent school before SNHU,and I never had the experiencesI’ve had here. Before, there wassomeone standing in front of youtelling you how it was going to be.To get the experience is a totallydifferent thing.”

Finding New PathsSome SNHU students said they enrolled in the School ofEducation set on teaching a particular grade, but during field work changed their minds.

“I was thinking kindergartenthrough first, but the last class Ihad with Gail Boucher made methink about the third-, fourth- andfifth-grade level,” says JocelynErcha, a senior from Beverly, Mass.

Meanwhile, students at the K-8school were also growing, andchanging their minds about things.

“Two kids stick out in my mind,”says Smith, who worked one-on-one in a Math Buddies programthat matched future students and

The Greening of SNHUBy Mike Cullity

On the northern outskirts of SNHU’s main campus, a

grassy parcel of university-owned land stretches along

the Merrimack River. Adjacent to the freight rail tracks

that flank the river’s eastern bank, the 10-acre plot is

key territory in SNHU’s mission to help save the planet.

Several feet beneath the undeveloped terrain, groundwater

pulses through a shallow layer of porous gravel, an aquifer

capable of producing hundreds of gallons a minute if

tapped. With a year-round temperature of 45 to 50

degrees Fahrenheit, the groundwater is a natural source

of geothermal heat that could be used to warm campus

buildings on frigid winter days.

What is anenergy hedge?A renewable energy hedge is a financial tooldesigned to protect a renewable energy generatorand a power customer against price volatility.SNHU’s 15-year contract with Iberdrola’s MapleRidge Wind Farm in upstate New York is based onthe output of 6.2 megawatts of wind capacity atMaple Ridge. The renewable energy hedge guaran-tees a fixed price for the 12 million kilowatt-hoursof electricity and 400,000 therms of natural gasSNHU uses annually. The university does not actu-ally buy its power directly from Maple Ridge WindFarm; rather, under the contract, it continues tobuy electricity and natural gas from local suppli-ers while the wind farm continues to sell powerinto its local spot market.

Renewable energy hedges function based on a“strike price” for energy that the generator andcustomer negotiate. In a month when the averageenergy price the generator receives exceeds thestrike price, the generator pays the customer thedifference; when the strike price exceeds theaverage energy price, the customer pays the generator the difference.

While offering SNHU long-term stability in itsenergy costs, the hedge promises significant savings should energy prices rise substantially.Moreover, the contract allows the university to invest in the success of Maple Ridge WindFarm by ensuring its income stream should energy prices fall.

As part of the agreement,SNHU also receives 17,500Renewable EnergyCertificates, which are regulatory assets that offsetgreenhouse gas emissionsassociated with fossil fueluse. Each REC represents1,000 kilowatt-hours ofrenewable electricity generated.

SNHU’s RECs offset 13,125tons of carbon dioxide peryear – the combined annualcarbon output of more than2,100 cars, according to U.S.Environmental ProtectionAgency calculations. The cer-tificates are sufficient to offsetthe estimated 11,400 tons ofcarbon dioxide the universityemits annually – makingSNHU a carbon-neutral campus – with the remainingcredits earmarked for othercarbon-offsetting projects.

For the past few years, SNHUSustainability Director RoyMorrison has led a team informulating a plan to extractgeothermal heat from thegroundwater using renewablesolar electricity. Installingarrays of photovoltaic panelson a portion of the field’s sur-face could generate some ofthe electricity for pumps thatwould reap heat for campus

use in the winter,Morrison says.

Moreover, the pumpscould work in reverseduring thesummer, cool-ing buildingsby extracting

heat and dissipating it

into the

earth, he adds. The solararrays would also supplysupplemental power to theuniversity’s grid, potentiallymeeting as much as 10 per-cent to 20 percent ofSNHU’s energy demand,Morrison says.

Energy analyst Pentti Aalto ofMorrison’s team has deter-mined that the groundwater’sheating potential is substan-tial. And by capitalizing onthe science of evaporationand condensation, the extrac-tion process produces three tofive times more energy in theform of heat than is expendedin electricity, Morrison says.

“We can have a really out-standing increase in totalefficiency and reduction inour environmental impact,”he says.

Now in a design and fund-ing-procurement stage, the project is one of severalinitiatives SNHU has under-taken to reduce its carbonfootprint and ensure sustainability for future generations. From institu-tional imperatives such as investing in renewableenergy to student-drivenefforts to curb consump-tion of bottled water,green practices havebecome integral to theuniversity’s mission.

“We’d like to be asresponsible a citizen as possible – that is, to be more thoughtful aboutsustainability, energy use

and conservation,” saysSNHU President PaulLeBlanc. “And we’d like to model for our studentsinnovations and ethicalthinking about the environ-ment. We want them to knowwhat it means to live in acommunity that is committed to sustainability.”

Going Carbon-NeutralAlthough the university haslong embraced recycling andother planet-friendly prac-tices, the greening of SNHUaccelerated greatly in 2007when the institution enteredinto a renewable energyhedge agreement with PPMEnergy, an Oregon companynow known as IberdrolaRenewables. The agreementenables SNHU to stabilizeits energy prices for 15 yearsand offset all of its carbonproduction from campuselectricity and natural gas.

By offering guaranteedincome in a volatile energymarket, hedge contracts arecritical to renewable pro-ducers’ growth.

“This sort of arrangementprovides the renewableenergy company, in thiscase Maple Ridge WindFarm, with a very highdegree of certainty in termsof its ability to invest inincreased renewable energycapacity,” says Dr. PaulBarresi, chair of SNHU’sDepartment of Environment,Politics and Society. “So it’sa win-win for everybody.”

While other universities haveentered into REC-purchasingagreements to offset carbonoutput or hedge agreementsto stabilize prices, SNHU’scombination of the twostrategies is a leading-edgepractice, says BlaineCollison, director of the EPAGreen Power Partnership,which recognizes SNHU’sefforts in its annual GreenPower Challenge – a rankingof university renewable energy purchasers by athletic conference.

Although universities’ abilityto make long-term commit-ments to renewable energymake them important playersin the sustainability move-ment, their position to influence future generations

make them even more critical to addressing climatechange.

“They have students who aregoing to be not only partici-pating in green initiatives,but taking those lessonslearned forward with theminto the rest of their lives,”Collison says. “As a set ofstakeholders that can reallyhelp change the world, high-er education is right there,squarely on the forefront ofpossibility and action.”

Campus Improvements – A PracticalApproachCreating greener campusfacilities and grounds isanother important facet of SNHU’s sustainabilitymission. In 2009, SNHUopened two newbuildings – theAcademic Centerand Dining Center –constructed to

meet guidelines the U.S.Green Building Councilestablished for itsLeadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design(LEED) certification system.

LEED promotes sustainablebuilding and developmentpractices through ratingssystems that reward projectsfor implementing strategiesthat ensure better environ-mental and health perform-ance. The U.S. GreenBuilding Council awardsseveral categories of LEED

certification to buildingsthat accumulate a minimumnumber of ratings points.

Despite following LEEDguidelines, however, the uni-versity elected not to pursueLEED certification for thetwo buildings. “When youdesign a building, typicallythere is at some point a gap,those last points you wouldneed to get certification,”LeBlanc explains. “Whathappens quite often then isinstitutions start chasingthose points and doing thingsthat may or may not makesense for the building or forwhere they are, but it gets

them the certification.”

What are RECs?RECs are renewable energy credits, sometimes also called green tags, tradablerenewable certificates or green energy certificates. According to the U.S.Department of Energy, they represent the technology and environmental attrib-utes of one megawatt hour of electricity generated from a renewable, or “green ”source, such as a wind farm.

Customers do not have to switch providers or use green power to purchase RECs.

In the case of the AcademicCenter, SNHU could havehelped close its points gapby adding a bike rack andchanging rooms and show-ers, at a cost of $75,000,LeBlanc says. But becauseSNHU is not a campuswithin easy biking distancefor many commuters, theuniversity decided that themoney would be betterspent making its olderbuildings more ener-gy efficient.

“A lot of campuses are hav-ing this debate,” LeBlancsays. “LEED certification isa great bragging point and itwould be fun to have it. Onthe other hand, why not fol-low LEED’s guidelines andbuild in that manner, but ifyour buildings fall short,don’t squander the money onpoints. Spend it or invest itin other sustainable effortsthat have greater impact.”

Last year, SNHU eliminatedthe use of chemicals for land-scaping and grounds mainte-nance in favor of organicmaterials, LeBlanc says. And the university recentlyembarked on a $2.3 millionproject to upgrade lightingand controls for heating, ven-tilation and air-conditioningunits across campus whilereducing water use. Theseefficiency measures willreduce the university’s carbonemissions by an estimated 15percent, LeBlanc says. Slated

to be completed later thisyear or in early 2012, theproject will also yield an estimated 20 percent energysavings, Morrison adds.

Sustainable-Minded StudentsAs SNHU pursues large-scale green initiatives, students are doing their part to foster sustainableliving. The EnvironmentallySustainable Students clubhas spearheaded campaignssuch as “One Earth, OneBottle,” which aims to persuade students, facultyand staff to drink tap waterinstead of bottled water, and “One Earth, OneContainer,” which promptedthe conversion to reusabletakeout food containers atcampus dining facilities.

“I really think the mostimportant part about [theclub’s efforts] is affecting the mindset,” says NateBoesch ’11, one of the club’sfounders. Boesch is nowenrolled at the University ofMichigan Law School, wherehe plans to concentrate onenvironmental law and policy.

Meanwhile, students andSNHU Center for Service &Community Involvementadministrators collaborated tocreate a campus communitygarden; opened in May, thegarden allows members of theSNHU community to growtheir own vegetables. Andfaculty members are leadingthe integration of sustainabili-ty into SNHU’s curriculum.

This fall, the university isoffering an environmentalmanagement major, aninterdisciplinary course of study that grew out of a predecessor programfocusing on environment,ethics and public policy.

“The idea is to provide students with the knowledge,skills and experiences theyneed to be able to managethe systems that exist at thehuman-nature interface,whether they are natural systems or social systems,because that’s where environ-mental problems lie,” saysDr. Paul Barresi, who chairsthe program. “Most environ-mental programs don’t havethat type of focus.”

SNHU is also developing an environmental sciencemajor to train students towork in fields such as con-servation, ecology and wastemanagement. The universityalso plans to incorporateenvironmental ethics into its instruction across disciplines.

“Whether it’s business, education or liberal arts,there will be an environ-mental ethics module thatall faculty can use in theircourses,” says Dr. MicheleGoldsmith, SNHU’sPapoutsy DistinguishedChair in EnvironmentalEthics and SocialResponsibility, who isassembling the material.

Assessing Our EffortsAlready a participant in the American Colleges &University Presidents ClimateCommitment, LeBlanc isconsidering participating inthe Sustainability Tracking,Assessment & Rating System(STARS), a self-reportingframework for colleges anduniversities to measure per-formance that the Associationfor the Advancement ofSustainability in HigherEducation has developed.

“If I were to look at ourefforts and be frank aboutthem, I would say reallygood work across multiplefronts, but I wouldn’t saythey were coherentlyplanned,” LeBlancsays. “We’re look-ing at STARS asway of takingour efforts tothe next levelin a moreplanned andpurposeful way.

“We want to getthe most com-prehensivesnapshotof, ‘Whereare wedoing agood job,and wheredo we stillhave work to do?’”

Next StepsWhile SNHU has made significant strides toward sus-tainability in recent years, the university’s greenvision continues to develop.

Redesigning the campus to encourage less drivingand more walking is one aspiration.

“We’re very much engaged in rethinking the campusto open it up, get parking out to the margins and cre-ate more green space,” President Paul LeBlanc says.“I think that’s one of the desires students have madeloud and clear.”

LeBlanc is also intrigued by the possibilities that bio-mass cogeneration could offer.

“The notion here is to have a biomass plant in themiddle of campus that could provide both heat andelectricity through a turbine,” LeBlanc says. “And itwould be fueled by wood byproducts, of which wehave many in New Hampshire. It’s a renewable energysource, and of course the new technologies makethese things burn cleaner.”

As part of a project to catalogue SNHU’s sustainabilityefforts to date, student intern Matt Charette spentthe summer assembling data measuring the positiveenvironmental impact of the university’s green initia-tives. By presenting his findings to LeBlanc andSNHU’s board of trustees, he hopes to marshal sup-port for future green endeavors.

“I’d like to see all departments integrate sustainabil-ity into how they operate, because sustainability isabout maximizing efficiency, reducing waste andessentially operating to the maximum potential,”Charette says. “And that’s more than any one initia-tive can accomplish. If you get marginal improvementacross the board, you could see great progress. Sothat’s my ultimate goal.”

Not to be outdone, the men’s program madegreat strides in 2010-11 after Coache tookover that program midway through the priorseason. Coming off a three-win campaignthe season of the change, SNHU compileda 12-7 record, tied for the Northeast-10regular season championship and advancedto the conference finals. The Penmen, whohad the league’s Player and Rookie of theYear, also earned the first NCAA berth inprogram history.

“We couldn’t have had a lot of success we’vehad without the support of the universityand the athletic department,” said Coache,

which we’ve never had a springbreak trip before, have only helpedto make us better.”

While Chandronnait and Nilandcould have chosen to compete forestablished top-tier programs,they both say they are glad theydecided to be a part of building a winning tradition.

“I came in wanting to make mymark and to be able to grow alongwith the program and have itbecome what it is now,” saidChandronnait, who was also athree-time SNHU Athlete of theYear. “It’s been amazing to watchit grow through everything Greghas done.”

Niland, who served as a teamcaptain this past season, added,“After my sophomore year, whenwe had the change, I didn’t knowif we’d make it to the next level. Inever dreamed of making it to thelevel we are at, but it’s exciting tobe a part of it and to be a part ofbuilding something,”

Staying on TopSo while SNHU tennis may not bea household word yet, it’s gettingthere. Coache said he gets moreinterest from potential recruitsfrom farther away, and more teams want to play both squads.

Niland knows that the Penmenwon’t be able to sneak up on anyone this time around.

Culture ChangePlayer Amber Chandronnait ’11came to SNHU in the fall of 2008after starting her career at theUniversity of Nebraska.

“Coming in, I didn’t have a lot ofexpectations, but as the years wenton, the program recruited reallywell and we just kept getting better,” said Chandronnait, whorecently wrapped up her career as a three-time Northeast-10Player of the Year. “The programgrew really fast, and a lot of that is because of Greg. He has theability to dream big.”

Player John Niland said the entireculture of the program changedwith the coaching switch.

“(Greg’s) absolute love for the gameand dedication is second-to-none,”said senior Niland, who garneredNE-10 All-Conference accoladesthis past season playing at No. 6singles. “We’re practicing whenthere’s snow on the ground threetimes a week; we have a workoutprogram, so we’re in a lot bettershape than we ever were. Plus,some of the higher-quality playerswe’ve played on spring break,

“This year we’re going to have thattarget on our backs. We’ll have towork even harder, because every-one knows what to expect from usand they’ll be gunning for us,” hesaid.

Chandronnait concluded, “I wantto see that in 10 years (as analum). I want to be able to comeback and still see SNHU tennisas the top team in the conference,continuing what we started.”

Garrett Jewell Selected in MLB Draft SNHU junior pitcher Garrett Jewell becamethe second player in baseball program his-tory to be selected in the annual MajorLeague Baseball Draft in June, when hewas selected in the 31st round by theMinnesota Twins. The other SNHU drafteewas Jason Paul, who was selected by theAtlanta Braves in 2004.

After signing with the Twins, Jewell wasassigned to the organization’s RookieLeague team in Elizabethton, Tenn.

"Being drafted is a dream come true," hesaid. “I’ve wanted to play in the bigleagues since I was 6, and now I’ll have anopportunity to make that happen."

In 2011, Jewell posted a 1.80 ERA in 10appearances (five starts) and compiled a 4-2 record. In his five starts he registered a0.49 ERA. He held opponents to a .213batting average while striking out 49 bat-ters in 45 innings.

Adam was one of three players to start all20 games for the men’s soccer team, whichadvanced to the second round of the NCAATournament. A captain, he totaled six goalsand six assists and became the latest in along line of Penmen soccer standouts to benamed an All-American, garnering ThirdTeam honors from the NSCAA.

One of the most decorated athletes inSNHU history, Chandronnait capped herstellar women’s tennis career by beingnamed the Northeast-10 Player of the Yearfor the third straight season. In 2010-11she went 13-0 in both Northeast-10 singlesand doubles play, and led the Penmen totheir second straight Northeast-10 champi-onship and third consecutive NCAATournament appearance.

Orlando “Bino” Ranson ’99

Orlando “Bino” Ranson ’99 is set to enter his secondseason as a men’s basketball assistant coach at theUniversity of Maryland. A native of Baltimore,Ranson went to Maryland from Xavier, with theMusketeers reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAATournament in his one season in Cincinnati. Prior tothat, Ranson served as an assistant coach at JamesMadison and Marist.

A four-year starter for the men’s basketball programand a member of the SNHU Athletic Hall of Fame,Ranson led the Penmen to an 85-33 record from1995 to 1999 with four NCAA Tournament appear-ances. He is the only player in the proud history ofPenmen basketball to be named All-Conference fourtimes. He currently ranks seventh in program historyin career scoring (1,899 points) and sixth in bothcareer assists (598) and three-point field goals (226).

SNHU Director of Athletics Chip Polak has announced that two individuals and one team will be inducted in theSNHU Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2012. The 2012 class will be inducted Saturday, Jan. 28. The Hall of Fame nowhas 99 members – 97 individuals and two teams.

The 1979-80 men’s basketball teamwill be the second teaminducted in the Hall ofFame, joining the 1989men’s soccer team. Women’ssoccer standout Lindsay Parks’05 and former SNHU coachand Professor Norton “Tuffy”Phelps will also be inducted.

SNHU’s rise to regional andnational prominence inmen’s basketball began withthe 1979-80 squad, whichwas the first to qualify forthe NCAA Tournament.That season, the Penmencaptured their first of sixregional titles to date,including the New EnglandRegion title with wins overQuinnipiac College andSpringfield College. ThePenmen, who finished witha record of 22-8, advancedto the Elite Eight, wherethey were downed byVirginia Union.

Parks, a four-year standoutwith the women’s soccer program from 2001-04, ranks eighth in program history with 29 career goals,while her 68 career pointsplace her just outside the top 10 in that category. Afour-time Northeast-10 All-Conference selection who

In soccer, Phelpsguided the Penmen to an 8-4-1 record in 1976 and anappearance in the NAIADistrict 5 playoffs, while inbaseball his 1970 squad captured the NEIBA champi-onship. A longtime professorat SNHU, Phelps served theuniversity from 1968-2005,starting his career in theMathematics Department. Inthe early 1990s, he startedthe sport management pro-gram, one of the first of itskind in the region and nowone of SNHU’s most popularmajors.

Since then, he’s launched a secondcareer as a period furniture maker,turning a childhood hobby and lifetimepassion into a successful, full-timebusiness.

“It positioned me financially to be ableto do this,” Hand said of his bankingcareer. “Being creative and artistic isn’tnecessarily a guarantee that you’ll be asuccess.”

It Started with a StickHand’s interest in making period furni-ture in styles ranging from Queen Anneand Chippendale to Arts and Craftsgoes back to his Portsmouth childhood.

His grandfather, a Hampton buildingcontractor, left a room full of toolswhen he died, and Hand’s father, whoworked at the local shipyard, had nointerest in them. Hand, then age 8 or9, decided to make a goalie stick.

“The tools were just sitting there, andI used to love to play pond hockey,”Hand said.

By 17, Hand was building enclosuresfor stereo speakers and “truly gettinginto furniture making.”

Creative ExpressionAfter marrying and becoming a parentat a young age, Hand realized hewould need “a good pension and agood salary” to support his family andhis favorite pastime.

“Having kids early matures you or showsyou how immature you are,” he said.

But he didn’t stop making furniture,his creative outlet.

“It builds up and could become frustrat-ing if you keep it bottled,” he said. “Ithink if you want to do the stuff, it’s inyour blood, and you’re probably not goingto be a thoroughly fulfilled individual ifyou don’t find a way to get that creativeside out.”

Not that Hand didn’t find creative outletsas CFO.

“I had the opportunity to create abudget, set a direction for the bank,”he said, adding that he parlayed inter-ests in real estate and architecture intohelping design several bank branches.

Meanwhile, Hand carved out time inthe evenings and on Saturdays to followhis bliss.

A Professional ArtisanToday, he works in a studio about 200feet from his home in Rye, often puttingin 10 hours a day.

“One of the most fun parts is the history,” Hand said, describing hisadmiration for the 17th- and 18th-century Portsmouth furniture-makerswhose work he replicates.

“They did what they did with a limitedamount of tools,” he said. “They took alog off a stump and turned it into a workof art.”

making and has mentored Hand, saidthe retired banker is methodical andintellectually curious.

“You give him information, a pattern,and he’ll take off,” Breed said. “Hehas a good eye for the stuff he picks.”

Hand’s meticulosity isn’t lost on cus-tomers such as Barrington residentKelly Glennon.

The first two pieces of furniture Glennonand her husband purchased for theirpost and beam Cape-style home, ademilune card table and a Queen Annecorner chair, were made by Hand.

“We knew his furniture would fit perfectly,” Glennon said. “These are works of art, family heirlooms,timeless, classic, something to pass on to our son. They’re one of a kind,which is very special.”

Hand, who sells his work to customersin New Hampshire, Maine andMassachusetts, estimates that since hestarted making furniture he has sold orgiven away 200 pieces, including hisfirst sale roughly 34 years ago.

And at 62, he’s looking forward tomaking more.

“People use the term retirement as amisnomer,” he said. “It’s changingyour life. It’s changed mine. And Icouldn’t be any more fortunate.”

Two years after their 4-year-old daughter’sdeath in 2007 from a lung infection, JohnBentley ’91 and his wife, Cheryl, were visiting the Salisbury, N.H., cemeterywhere she is buried.

“It was Memorial Day and we’d broughtflowers to the grave and noticed nothingwas blooming,” John says, recalling howdesolate the cemetery looked.

The Bentleys wanted to brighten theirdaughter’s final resting place and choselilacs for their hardiness. Purple hadbeen Katie Bentley’s favorite color.

Before long, the Bentleys had launched theKatie Bentley Lilac Project, starting with“Lilac Fever,” a campaign to raise enoughmoney to purchase and plant hundreds ofpurple lilacs in the town cemetery.

“We went to the lilac experts who sizedand spaced the plants and picked the right varieties,” John says.

Lilacs honoring Katie’s memory were planted by students on the SNHU campus, where John has roots, and inpublic spaces across the state.

“There’s always room for a few lilacs,”John says. “They’re hardy, tough andrequire little maintenance … and they fit with any landscape plan.”

Meanwhile, the Bentleys, who have twosurviving children, Molly and Kelly, haveextended the project’s reach, with thehope of taking it international.

“Every community in America has lost a family member, and planting lilacs is a reminder of that person,” John says.
