Library workers ratify contractEighteen local CUPE workers

and the Nelson Public Library have ratified a new three-year contract.

The deal was reached last month, on January 8, 2014, by CUPE Local 339 reps, the Chief Librarian, Library Board Chair and City Administration.

The new agreement lasts until The new agreement provides a wage increase that strikes a balanced outcome for workers, while helping reduce costs associated with sick leave, and at the same time providing benefit improvements for workers.

There are three other union contracts remaining for The City and its workers to ratify.

performing for many years. He is a singer-songwriter of extraordinary talent. He plays guitar and harmonica; recalling a style of folk music that has never lost its interest. Benefit for Stacey, Friday, Feb. 21. Tickets are almost sold for this support event for Stacey Lock. Stacey is an important part of this commu-nity helping people on our streets who

may be having problems and helping them find the resources that they need. She has had an operation and needs an extended recover time and is unable to work. Transconnect Coffee House, Saturday, Feb 22. Expressions Night Cafe is hosting “gender Expressions” a coffee house organized by out trans-gender community for everyone. There will be arts and music to cel-ebrate all genders in our community. This promises to be an exciting and colourful event.

Open-mic every Wednesday. Last Wednesday’s open-mic was out-rageous! While we open the Cafe at 6 p.m. and would like the music to start as soon as possible, in the past musicians and audience didn’t seem to

show up until 8 p.m. Last Wednesday performers and audience showed up early. The first act started at 7 p.m. and after 25 different performers the evening ended at 11:30 p.m. This area has an emmence amount of diverse and talented musicians and perform-ers. If you’re a performer and would like a chance at open-mic, we start signing people up at 6 p.m., mostly on a first -come, first-serve basis.

Expressions Cafe serves as much locally-made, or locally accessed food and drinks as possible. We buy our teas and spices, along with juice, pop and coconut water from the Kootenay Co-op. Our coffee comes from John Ward coffee, hot chocolate from Ambrosia on the East Shore, and we serve cup-cakes from Lucky Cupcake company. We’re always looking for new prod-ucts that can both satisfy our audience as well as support our community. express@expressnews.bc.ca

Fire Response: vehicle on fire

On Monday, Feb. 17, at 19:45 hours the Nelson Fire Department responded to a report of vehicle fire. Both on duty members responded immediately with 1 engine.

Upon arrival of the duty crew a vehicle fire was observed. The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to extinguish the fire & exposure protection for a 2nd vehicle in close proximity. The crews were able to protect the second

vehicle from any damage. The fire was extinguished quickly using approx.150 gallons of water.

The fire appears to have originated in the engine compartment.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. All occupants of the vehi-cle were out of the vehicle upon arrival. Damage is estimated at $2000.00. The cause of the fire is unknown because of the damage to the vehicle.

Nelson Police Department personal were first to arrive on scene. They made sure the occupants of the vehicle were safe & secured the scene.

Nelson Fire Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to ensure that your vehicle is in good working order.

RCMP News: 28 year old Castlegar man facing chargesAt approximately 5:30 a.m on

Sunday, Feb. 16, Castlegar RCMP were called to the West Kootenay Airport in response to a suspicious male complaint. Witness stated that there was a male at that location carrying a pipe and a blan-ket and that he had attacked the witness’s vehicle with what appeared to be pliers.

Before police arrived, another man drove into the parking lot and opened his passenger side window to speak to the male. The male lunged into the passen-ger side of the truck and stabbed the driv-er in the face with metal wire snips, caus-

ing serious injury. The victim exited his vehicle and the suspect male got into the driver’s seat. The original complainant saw that the male appeared to be trying to steal the victim’s truck, so he rammed the front of the truck with his own vehicle in an attempt to stop the suspect male from fleeing. The vehicle began rolling down the hill, and struck the Police car as the officer arrived, causing front end dam-age. The suspect male fled the truck, but was subsequently apprehended and taken into Police custody.

Neither the officer or the 2 witnesses

suffered injuries in this incident. The 63 year old man who was stabbed was transported to Kelowna hospital with serious facial injuries.

Further investigation revealed that 10 vehicles parked at the airport parking lot had been broken into and/or dam-aged.

The male is facing charges of: Aggravated Assault, 11 counts of Mischief ( to vehicles), Resist Arrest, and Theft of Motor Vehicle.

A lot of scrutiny is lev-ied upon many

of the modern films. It’s popular to hate on anything new when it comes to the hardcore fans of cinema, but is it just popular opinion or is there something more?

According to a fairly recent study from Nature Scientific Reports (http://bit.ly/1bJMOZh) this may be true. There are two points I’d like to make about this sort of study. Firstly, the study is based more so on how we discuss the movies rather then the actual films themselves. A second point is this gener-

ally links towards the big-ger blockbusters and gener-ally more popular movies. If you go the lower budget or independent route when it comes to movies you’ll find that they have more of that creativity modern cinema is missing.

So if you feel like harp-ing on movies for lack of creativity, check out the independent film scene. There are plenty of mod-ern classics being pumped out in both independent and even the more popular mov-ies still make for great films. Check them out and come to your own conclusions on the state of modern cinema.

The City of Nelson has recently put out a proposal for creative bike racks (see page 7). We applaud the City for acknowledging the

need to make it easier for non-polluting means of transportation. There is more the City can do, such as having designated parking areas for small cars. Also, it is clear our future will involve electric vehicles. We already have a

significant amount of electric bikes; motorcycles and cars are coming! Some of these new bike racks should include the ability to charge batteries and eventually Nelson should have charging stations for vehicles.
