Good afternoon, everyone, andwelcome to today's Evo-StikLeague Southern match with

Tiverton Town. I hope our visitors have apleasant stay with us and a safe journeyhome.

Tiverton currently occupy the final play-off position - their defeat at home to Eve-sham last Saturday was their first in theleague since the second game of the sea-son back in August so nothing's going tobe easy for the Magpies today.

Today's game is the first of three homegames in a week for Wimborne and nowwould be a good time to prove that wecan play just as well at Cuthbury as wecan away from home. Since our lasthome game two weeks ago we've lost 2-1at Winchester and 2-0 at Swindon Super-marine but in both games the lads havegiven 100% and the defence, in particu-lar, has been outstanding.

I hope some of you were able to watchthe video of our Under-16s Junior Pre-mier League match with BCW Saints onthe main pitch last Saturday. Despite be-ing played in a fierce wind both teamsplayed some good football in a 3-3 draw.Congratulations to manager Tony Brad-ley, coach Lee Purton and all the lads forrepresenting our Club so well.

And our Ability Counts team went backto the top of the Dorset County AbilityCounts league table with a 5-2 win overDorchester last Sunday. Luke Robinson(2), Richard Hills, Luke Coakes & RobDriver got the goals in a game that wasplayed in a great spirit. That's 4 wins outof 5 for the lads. Thanks to assistantcoach Adam Teuber for refereeing Sun-day's game, even though he awarded apenalty to Dorchester!

I've said this before and no doubt I'll sayit again, but if there is anyone out therewho wants to join the Board and help inthe running of our Club, please talk to anydirector. What we're looking for is peo-ple with energy, enthusiasm, a willing-ness to take responsibility for an area ofthe Club's operations, and a genuine lovefor the Club. Could that be you?

Please continue to give Simon and all theplayers your support and enjoy today'sgame."Enjoy the game.

From the DugoutI wasn’t quite sure how to start off my

first “manager’s programme notes” –there isn’t actually a manual or guide

on what should go in, so I’ll probablymake most of it up as I go along, and hopethat some of it makes sense and gives yousomething to read about over your prematch Bovril, Coffee, Pint or Pie.The first part needs to be pretty standardfootball clichéd stuff, and that is - I’m de-lighted to be joining Wimborne Townfootball club. It is a great opportunity forme personally, at a very good club, and Iwill be doing all I can to make my timehere a success for the team and those be-hind the scenes.I’m aware that my appointment wasn’tmet with overwhelming excitement fromall quarters of the Wimborne Town FCsupporters, plus a few “keyboard warriors”from the Bournemouth Echo, who seem tothink that having a laptop gives them freerein to put opinions onto the internet thatotherwise wouldn’t get given the time ofday. Those I really couldn’t care lessabout to be honest, but the Wimborne sup-porters are a different matter. I’m acutelyaware that managers are judged on theirteam’s performances and results and asI’ve said I will be doing my very best toconvince even the most sceptical here atthe Cuthbury that I’m the right man for thejob. You’ll find out that I’m quite ap-proachable so feel free to come in to thebar afterwards for a chat and offer me anyadvice you think. I’m not guaranteeingthat I’ll take it though! It has been a bit of a whirlwind since I wasoffered the job by the board of directors acouple of weeks ago. The playing squadwas pretty threadbare whilst Paul Roast

was in charge and the well documentedfinancial situation at the club meant thatsome players had left for pastures neweven before I arrived. That coupled withsome untimely injuries to players meantthat I have been keeping Vodafone’s shareprice at a healthy level with the amount ofcalls I‘ve had to make to ensure that I hadenough players to put competitive sidesout for the first two games. In those two games I’ve not been able tofault the player’s efforts. I knew that it wasgoing to be a testing start to my first tasteof Southern league management. Winches-ter, Swindon Supermarine and today’s vis-itors Tiverton are all sitting in healthypositions in the league with ambitions tomake it into the Premier Division, so therewas never going to be an easy three pointson offer, or one point for that matter. Tak-ing on advice from Paul Roast and JohnMacey, we set up in both the Winchesterand Swindon games to be solid in defenceand try to hit our opponents on the break. As I’ve said the effort put in by the playersand the defence especially was excellent. We did however, come up short and whilsttwo defeats were possibly not unexpectedin some quarters, I saw enough there to bepositive about the rest of the season. There is still a lot of hard work ahead.League positions rarely lie and we are inthe position that we are because the per-formances have not been good enough towarrant a position any higher. Football isusually quite simple in that respect. Every-one with an interest in the game is entitledto an opinion as to who is the best player, what is the best formation etc, etc, but ulti-mately success is determined by thenumber of goals scored and goals conced-ed that can be then transferred into points.

The short term objective for me here atWimborne is to score enough goals to getenough points so that we are not constantlylooking over our shoulder for the remain-der of the 2015-2016 season.

So (by the way, you’ll read this quite a bitin the coming weeks/months), please getbehind the lads and give them all your sup-port. We’ll be doing our absolute best toget Wimborne climbing up the table.

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and welcome to this afternoon’sleague match against Tiverton. Our visitors are currently fifth in

the table, and have only lost once in 10games on their travels, and that on theopening day of the season at North Leigh. Our last home game was 2 weeks agoagainst Shortwood. You may rememberthat the wind was absolutely horrific, blowing straight down the ground towardsthe Hospital end - it even ruffled Roasty’shair! We kicked against it in the first half, and couldn’t clear the ball. It’s a whilesince we’ve played in conditions that bad.Having said that, it was the same for bothteams. Shortwood were hard-working, andneat and tidy. They made the most of play-ing with the wind in the first half, anddealt with playing against it better than wedid. A bright spot was our goal. Morganwas in the right place to bury his headerfrom Preso’s cross with his right peg. Ste-ve Harris took a great picture of the ballhitting the back of the net - it’s a couple ofpages further on. I love the look on thelittle lad’s face behind the goal. Morganand Ryan J both looked lively when theycame off the benchThe following Wednesday we were atWinchester, who were sitting second inthe table and on a good run. It was Si-mon’s first game in charge, and we weredown to the bare bones. It was a strangegame. We had our chances to score, and, actually, I thought we had the better of theplay for the first hour. They just kept com-ing at us, and the boys at the back didn’tget any respite. We held on for 70 min-utes, then they scored twice. But we keptbattling and Franklyn’s superb pass putAnt through and he took his goal brilliant-ly. Harvs made some terrific saves, and

Crutch was immense. They were a nigglyside, but that’s part of football and youhave to deal with it.Last Saturday we travelled to face anotherside on a good run - Supermarine. In theirlast game they’d won 5-1 at Shortwood.Injuries had ravaged our squad, so at theback we were without Harvs, Crutch, Oliand Billy, and of course Cossy. Simonplayed me at centre-back with Blakey, thatwas my third different position in 3games. Simon set us up to counter attack. It was a heavy pitch, the grass was long, and the strong wind was gusting. They’rea good side, and to be honest our mid-fieldwas over-run. But there were some bigmoments in the game. Franklyn was putthrough 1 on 1 with the keeper really earlyon, and had more time than he realised. And in the second half Preso hit the postTheir second, right at the end, looked off-side to me. There were some positives wecould take from the game. Declan and Ry-an J had good games at full-back. Shanewas brilliant for his first game in goal. He’s quite an organiser, and you knowhe’s there. We looked sharp on the break. It’s good to get some new blood in - RyanMurray and Shane played on Saturday, and I know Simon is looking at other op-tions. Simon has been very positive, andthere are good signs for the future. This afternoon is the first of 3 homegames in 8 days. On paper, today and nextTuesday look the tougher ones. But in thisleague just about any team can get a goodresult on their day. The lads will be goingall out to show you what we’re capable of.We look forward to your support.

Enjoy the game. Scott Arnold

Wimborne Town 1 Shortwood Utd 4 - 28 Nov 2015 - Ken Fergus reports

Wimborne lost 4-1 to Shortwood Unitedin a game dominated by the strong wind.Wimborne chose to kick against the windin the first half but went in at half-time 2-0down. When Shortwood struck againshortly into the second period, the gamewas lost despite a fine headed goal fromsubstitute Morgan Turner. With Jamie Davidson & James Stokoe sus-pended and without long term absenteesAdam Costello & Mark Gamble, boss PaulRoast played Scott Arnold on the right sideof midfield alongside Franklyn Clarke,Louis Kellaway & Jon Blake. The Magpies made a decent start andFranklyn Clarke went close on 6 minuteswhen he dispossessed a defender and sawhis fierce shot beaten out by Tom King inthe Shortwood goal. But it was Shortwoodwho struck first on 12 minutes when aharmless looking shot took a deflection.Jason got to it but could only push it outand Will Morford scored. With the ever stronger wind at their backs,Shortwood looked more dangerous as thehalf went on. One free-kick from out widewas headed behind for a corner and anoth-er was blasted high over Jason’s bar beforeMorford struck again on 35 minutes. If thefirst goal was unlucky, the second wasdown to a defensive error which allowed aball to be squared to Morford on the penal-ty spot in front of an unguarded goal. Hemade no mistake and Shortwood went 2-0up.An overhead kick by Carl Preston was eas-ily saved before Jason Harvell made anexcellent save to push the ball round thepost for a corner. Half-time – WimborneTown 0 Shortwood United 2

With the strong wind behind them, Wim-borne were still in the game but on 51 min-utes they went 3-0 behind. There was abreak down the left and when the ball wasplayed in along the ground, James Singhwas at the far post to net.Paul Roast brought Morgan Turner on inplace of Louis Kellaway and the moveplayed immediate dividends when the im-proving youngster got on the end of a sub-lime Carl Preston cross on 57 minutes tohead past King.Carl Preston had a free-kick blocked by thewall after 70 minutes and then a longthrow from Billy Maybury caused prob-lems for the Shortwood defence. RyanJohnson came on for Ian Oliver with 15minutes to go and two minutes later Wim-borne almost got another goal back aftergreat work by Preston along the left bye-line.However, it was Shortwood who had thefinal say with a well-taken fourth goal on85 minutes. The ball was played down theright wing and when the cross came insubstitue Liam Meredith met it first time toshoot home.Shortwood fully deserved their win. Theyused the conditions better than Wimborneand looked faster and more dangerous thanthe Magpies throughout. The pressinggame that we’ve seen recently was absentand we rarely threatened the visitors’ goal.

Wimborne Town: Harvell, Randall,Crutcher, Kellaway (Turner 55), Maybury,Blake, Arnold (capt), Oliver (Johnson 75),Waters, Clarke, Preston. Unused subs:Roast, O’Hare.

Winchester City 2 Wimborne Town 1 - 2 Dec 2015 - Ken Fergus reportsWimborne went down 2-1 at the DenplanStadium but could take credit from thegame. Two goals from Winchester late onconsigned Wimborne to another defeat onWednesday despite a late counter fromAnthony Waters. But this was a muchbetter performance from the Magpies withthe defence, in particular, outstanding. There was an early scare for Wimbornewhen Jason Harvell picked up an injury inwarm-up but the big keeper was able tomake the starting lineup. New boss SimonBrowne went with a back four of ScottArnold, Wayne Crutcher, Jon Blake &Billy Maybury, a midfield of MorganTurner, James Stokoe, Franklyn Clarke,Jamie Davidson & Ant Waters and CarlPreston up front. An injured Ian Oliverwas on the bench along with Declan Ran-dall, Ryan Johnson and Callum O’Hare.Skipper Scott Arnold won the toss andchose to play with the wind in the firsthalf. Winchester had all the possession inthe early stages without troubling theMagpie defence. On 10 minutes a David-son free-kick was headed just wide byStokoe. And there was further encourage-ment a minute later when Preston, wholooked sharp all game, finished a good runwith a shot that was deflected for a corner.Winchester could have gone ahead on 17minutes when in the space of 20 seconds,a cross from either wing flashed across theWimborne goal with no takers to stick it inthe net. Turner came to the Magpies res-cue on 23 minutes with a header off theline but 2 minutes later it was Preston atthe other end making another good runand getting a shot away.It was Maybury’s turn to clear off the lineon 33 minutes and then Harvell made agood save from a close in header.

No score at half-time, then, with the Mag-pies very much in the game.Wimborne started the second half brightlyand forced a couple of corners. From thesecond of them, Blake made a dart for thenear post and his header flashed just pastthe back post. Blakey was in action at theother end on the hour when his last ditchclearance saved the day and then on 63minutes Harvell made a breathtaking save, tipping a header over the bar.The home side took the lead on 70 min-utes, Matt Benham scoring with a shot thatfound Jason’s top right corner. And just 8minutes later they doubled their lead, theprolific Warren Bentley reacting first to across along the ground to fire home. But the Magpies didn’t allow their headsto drop and were back in the game on 83minutes. A superb ball inside the fullback from Clarke set Waters on his wayand the young winger showed great poiseand balance to beat Norris from the cornerof the six yard box.But Wimborne couldn’t get the equaliseras the game degenerated into a series offouls and scuffles after one of which Dav-idson received his second yellow card.Winchester just deserved the three pointsbut Wimborne could easily have takensomething from the game and SimonBrowne must have been impressed by thespirit and the performance. The back fiveof Jason, Scott, Wayne, Jon & Billy allperformed heroically and Franklyn Clarkein midfield and Carl Preston up front alsocaught the eye. Winchester would havewon no fans with their petulant behaviourin the first half but they got that undercontrol in the second period and look likea play-off team.

In difficult conditions, a defiant rear-guardaction by a depleted Wimborne side wasnot enough to share the spoils. A confidentSupermarine scoring a goal in each half todeservedly take all 3 points. With Wayne Crutcher and Jason Harvelladded to the long injury list, and BillyMaybury ill, Manager Simon Browne start-ed with loan-signing Shane Murphy ingoal, a back-line of Declan Randall, ScottArnold, Jon Blake and Ryan Johnson, a5-man midfield of new signing Ryan Mur-ray, James Stokoe, Franklyn Clarke, JamieDavidson and Ant Waters, with Carl Pres-ton on his own up-front. Callum O’Hareand Morgan Turner were on the bench, ac-companied by Ian Oliver and Harvell.Swindon, sporting more facial hair thanyou’d see at a Santa fun run, were withoutsuspended top-scorer Hopper. It gave skip-per Arnold the opportunity to renew ac-quaintances with Ashley Edenborough. After 3 minutes Wimborne had probablytheir best chance of the game. Prestonseized on a loose ball to play Clarkethrough. His first effort was kept out by theadvancing keeper, and defenders got backto smother his second. Two minutes laterMurphy introduced himself to the visitingsupporters with an eye-catching tip-over.With some clever inter-play, Supermarinecreated the chance for a shot from the edgeof the penalty area which was destined forthe top corner until Murphy launched him-self and somehow got a hand to it.The home side passed and moved as theyprobed for shooting opportunities. Withsupport from the full-backs, they playedthe ball on the ground through and aroundour mid-field. Much of their good playcame down their left, where the groundwas less heavy. With great ‘keeping, last-

ditch blocks, and profligate finishing, theWimborne goal remained in tact until the18th minute. A well-worked move downthe left ended with a low cross and shotwhich Johnson stopped on the line. Hisclearance rebounded to Morris who scored.Although Wimborne looked dangerous onthe counter-attack, most of the action wasin the Wimborne box. Blake blocked, Ar-nold intercepted with a diving header,Blake tackled, Randall tackled, Arnoldblocked, Murphy saved, Blake blocked.Somehow at half-time, it remained 1-0.During the break the groundsman did moregardening than Alan Titchmarsh, and, likean optical illusion, the gusting wind blewcorner flags in opposite directions. The visitors had a promising spell at thestart of the second period. Stokoe playedPreston through on the right but his curlingshot came back off the far post. Johnson,Waters and Preston combined well downthe left, Clarke’s all-action game causedproblems, and Stokoe probed. At the other end Murphy pounced on theball following a goalmouth scramble,Blake blocked, Johnson intercepted, andBlake blocked. Turner replaced Murray, and found space, but delivery of the finalball to him lacked quality. As the clock ticked into time added-on,Swindon scored a second. A low crossfrom the right ended up at Waldon’s feet atthe far post for a tap-in. Wimborne’s ap-peals for off-side disappeared in the wind. For all Wimborne’s heroics, it’s goals thatwin matches, and Supermarine alwayslooked the more likely. Man of the match?Preston ran unselfishly, and the back 5gave their all. My vote goes to Blakey -another “heart on his sleeve” performance.

Tiverton Town - Player Profiles cont’d

History of Tiverton Town F.C.The summer of 1913 saw the birth of what is now Tiverton Town Football Club from theashes of the recently demised rugby club. The first season had barely been completedwhen war broke out and Tiverton Athletic were forced to adjourn their journey.Play resumed following the Great War and after the 1921/22 season it was decided that amerger between Athletic and Uffculme St. Peters would take place. The newly formedclub, known as Tiverton AFC, moved from the Tiverton & District League to the EastDevon League and finally grabbed their first piece of major silverware.A string of championships and near misses followed as the club moved into the Exeter &District League before war once again stopped the majority of competitive sport. When action got underway again in 1946 the club, now with the familiar Tiverton Townmoniker, relocated from a war battered Elms Ground to their current home at Ladys-mead, although they used a pub ten minutes walk from the ground for changing. In the early 1970s the brave decision to join the Western League was taken, and whilethe induction was tough the club were able to hang on through the bleak winters. includ-ing relegation to the Western League First Division. However, Town clinching promo-tion back to the Western League Premier Division at the end of the 1988/89 season.Tiverton were to embark on an unprecedented twenty years of success and never foundthemselves outside of the top four in the Western League following promotion. MartynRogers took over in the summer of 1991 and the following season the club were runners-up to an invincible Clevedon Town, and reached the FA Vase final at Wembley on theback of some staggering results against higher opposition. Forest Green Rovers were hitfor six while Barton Rovers and Buckingham Town both went for four. The day out atWembley lost a little of its silver lining as Town were defeated 1-0 by Bridlington, butby now everything was in place and the remarkable rise of a club that was in danger ofextinction ten years prior was about to be completed. The Western League championship finally arrived at Ladysmead in 1994 and stayed inTiverton the following year. By this time Tivvy had made three appearances in the firstround proper of the FA Cup, playing host to Leyton Orient and having the cheek to takean early lead on the most recent occasion.

But it was the FA Vase that was most coveted, and having carefully assembled a squadwith the belief and talent to succeed, the dream was finally realised when Tow LawTown were defeated by a single Peter Varley goal at Wembley Stadium in May 1998.Not satisfied with just one trip up the 39 steps to lift the cup Tiverton went and did itagain the following year, this time getting the better of a very highly fancied BedlingtonTerriers side thanks to Scott Rogers late, late strike. The only thing left was to take on the challenge of the Southern League, and after an im-pressive initial season Tiverton won promotion to the Premier Division at only the sec-ond attempt. In keeping with an unwritten Tivvy tradition the promotion came afterfinishing as runners-up but little did that matter on a warm and sunny day at Blakenallwhen the Yellows won 3-0 thanks to goals from Paul Chenoweth, Scott Rogers andKevin Nancekivell to seal their place in the top tier of the Southern League. The step upin class did little to temper the Yellows appetite for success and the next two seasons sawthem finish respectably in sixth and then fourth, only being denied a shot at the Confer-ence after failing to win any of the last five games of the 2002/03 campaign. It is fair to say that the club has since struggled to maintain the air of invincibility thatcarried them to such great success, and the latter half of the following season saw Tiver-ton slump from second to fifteenth and miss out on a place in the newly structured re-gional sections of the Conference. The next five years saw Tivvy back in mid-table, anda particularly frustrating 2006/07 had them fighting at the wrong end of the table formuch of the season, often hampered by postponed games, injuries and suspensions. Theonly high point was winning Southern League Cup with a fine 3-2 aggregate victoryover Hemel Hempstead Town, but even that failed to disguise the fact that there neededto be a period of rebuilding if Tiverton are to take the next step up the ladder. The culmination of half a decade of struggle came in the 2009/10 season when the clubfinished in the relegation zone. Tivvy were lucky to escape the drop due to off-field mat-ters concerning other clubs across the non-league system, and in May 2010 Martyn Rog-ers stepped down as manager, bringing to an end a 19-season managerial tenure.Former England Under-21 captain Chris Vinnicombe was appointed in his stead but re-sults were poor and he left the club after just four months at the helm, replaced by formerPlymouth Argyle and Gillingham midfielder Mark Saunders. However, the slow start tothe 2010/11 season proved decisive and Tiverton finally succumbed to relegation for on-ly the second time in the history of the club.Tivvy steadied the ship with a comfortable mid-table finish in 2011/12, only fading awayfrom playoff contention in the final month of the campaign, and after a strong start to thelast campaign hopes were high, but a poor run of form saw Saunders leave the club inMarch 2013. Jamie Ward was appointed as his replacement until the end of the season, and in the summer of 2013 John Clarkson took over as manager and quickly went aboutassembling what appears to be a very strong squad.

The Big Interview - Simon Browne

What’s your football history?I played over 850 games at non-league levelfor Weymouth, Salisbury, Dorchester,Poole, Hamworthy & Swanage. I have wonthe Southern League twice with Salisbury, got promoted from Conference South toConference National via play offs (Salis-bury) and been Southern League runners uptwice with both Weymouth & Salisbury. Ihave also reached FA Trophy ¼ finalstwice, been a Southern League Cup runnerup, Dorset Senior Cup winner on 5 occa-sions and Wiltshire Premier Shield winnertwice. I also led Poole Town to the WessexLeague title in 2008-09. However appear-ing live on MOTD & Sky Sports playingfor Salisbury v Nottingham Forest in the2nd round of the FA Cup in 2006 definitelystand out as career highlights.I began my coaching/managing days withSalisbury City reserves in 2007, taking theside through the whole season unbeatenwhilst winning the Suburban League titleand Knockout Cup. After this I managedHamworthy Utd for nearly 4 years in theWessex League, and I’m sorry to say thatmy most memorable victory was a 3-1 FACup win over Wimborne Town in 2013! Ithen had an 18 month sabbatical beforejoining Dorchester Town as their reservemanager, before accepting the hot seat hereat the Cuthbury.Which coach/manager do you most admire? In the professional game the late BobbyRobson was the best coach and manager Iwatched or read about – and he did it allwith such dignity despite the criticism hegot especially as England boss. In nonleague football, I’ve yet to meet acoach/manager that ticks all of the boxesfor me to describe as the best or most ad-mired. Some have come close mind you.

What’s the best game you’ve seen?Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with AC Milan in theChampions League final 2005. The mostamazing fight back, plus the drama of pen-alties. Germany 1 - England 5 runs it aclose second. What’s the best goal you’ve seen?Michael Owen’s solo effort versus Argenti-na in the France ’98 World Cup.Who’s the best player you’ve seen?Christiano Ronaldo is the best I’ve seen onTV – unstoppable when he’s in the mood. Ihave also had the pleasure (though it wasn’tat the time) of playing against Matthew LeTissier – he was a magician with the ball athis feet.Which is the best team you’ve seen? The Germany side that won the World cupin 2014 would take some beating by anycurrent club side and many of the great in-ternational sides of the past. What are your plans for WTFC:· Short-term (to end of 2015):

- Improve Wimborne Town FC· Medium-term (to end of this season):

- Improve Wimborne Town FC· Long-term (next season onwards):

- Improve Wimborne Town FCCan we expect to see any new faces in theSquad or Management Team in the comingweeks? - YesWhat can we supporters do to help you?Keep coming to games (bring a friend too)and keep supporting and encouraging theplayers during games.Anything you’d like to say to the support-ers? – At the risk of sounding clichéd, Iwill be doing my utmost to get the clubmoving forward and to be more successful. It may not happen overnight though. EVERYONE remembers their first time.Mine was at Cambridge United’s AbbeyStadium. It’s the day life really begins. The firsttime you watch a football match – live. After watching the U’s in friendly action,my first top flight game was Tottenhamagainst Sheffield United. Paul Walshscored a hat-trick and Nayim got the otherin a 4-0 win, but I was mainly in awe ofseeing Gazza. Not that I support Spurs.I was happy watching anything, from topto bottom. My dad was involved with theEastern Counties League and he sharedhis love of Non-League football with me.We went to Sudbury once and I wenthome with a club teddy bear as a keep-sake from the chairman. My dad would often have to catch upwith the referee after the games. I’d waitoutside the changing rooms with the scentof liniment wafting down the corridor. Iloved that smell. And I’ll never forget the first ever trip toWembley Stadium. The FA Vase final in1991, Guiseley v Gresley Rovers. It fin-ished 4-4. Not too bad for your debut atthe home of football!I’d just turned six so don’t recall much ofthe game, but the stand out memory isrunning up the stairs to get to our seatswhile the national anthem was on becausewe were late. It’s probably why I enjoycovering FA Vase finals so much now.

Remember your first game? We’ve started a new feature in The NLPthis season called, Football Firsts. As itsays on the tin, it’s about all those earlymemories and why we all fall in love withfootball. The first pair of boots, the firstkit, your first footballing hero. It’s been interesting speaking to playersabout how it all began. Chester strikerRoss Hannah remembers going to watchSheffield Wednesday with his grandadhaving normally been at a family housenear Hillsborough listening the support-ers’ roar.Didcot Town’s joint-manager – and clublegend – Jamie Heapy recalled going towatch Reading and his dad taking a littlestep for him to stand on so he could see.Danny Cowley, Braintree’s manager, tolda story from watching West Ham andhow his brother Nicky, also his assistant, cried when the Hammers scored becausethe crowd was so loud! However young or old you are, everyonehas that starting point, and it’s whyyou’re at a game today.

This was last week’s N-LP programmecolumn, but I thought it might get youthinking, and bring back some happymemories.Which was the first game you can remem-ber going to? - Ed

Wimborne hosted Yeovil at BlandfordSchool in windy conditions. Both teamsseemed cautious after kick off but wereevenly matched. However, it was Yeovilwho started to get a foot hold in this gameand their rhythm of passing become supe-rior to Wimborne’s. It took a great shotfrom Yeovil’s Nathan Cornick from 25ydsto break the dead lock. Yeovil’s keeperDaniel Steele making two outstandingsaves to keep Wimborne at bay.In the 2nd Quarter Wimborne stepped uptheir game, communicated better, and gotinto their passing rhythm. The tempo ofthe game became more evenly matchedwith opportunities for both teams but thescored remained the same.

The 3rd quarter saw Wimborne pressingfor an equaliser, and it was Aidan Shep-herd who levelled the score. Quick think-ing by Yeovil’s keeper Harry Crowtersupplied Cain Philips with a precise kickto the half-way line, allowing him to turnhis marker and run on goal to score. Twominutes later Wimborne’s Liam MurphyParry took his chance to level the scoreagain. Jamie Whitehouse, then scored torestore Yeovil’s leadIn the last quarter Yeovil closed up shopand made it difficult for Wimborne to pen-etrate their defence. However, Wimbornepersisted and Pat Rogerson scored from 15yards to complete the scoring of this enter-taining and competitive game.

Wimborne Town welcomed local rivalsBCW Saints to Cuthbury.Q1 started with Wimborne keeping the ballwell, playing against a very strong wind. The first goal for BCW came when a spec-ulative through ball carried unexpectedlyon the wind and complicated WimborneGK Scott’s intended volley clear. A wellworked opening was created for AaronWickings to curl into the far corner.Q2 saw BCW taking advantage of thewind behind them. A free kick a yard in-side the Wimborne half caught on thewind and carried over GK Rohan Bayntonto make it 0-2. The half finished withoutany other major chances being created.Q3 began with the wind now at Wim-borne’s backs. Although keeping the ballwell and creating decent chances, a reluc-tance to shoot saw the quarter end with nofurther score and with BCW maintainingtheir goal threat on the break.

For Q4 Wimborne changed to a 3-5-2 for-mation. After 3 minutes Josh Smith’s lowcross evaded everyone bar Jack Gibsonarriving on the left-hand side, slottinghome to make it 1-2. With 6 minutes left,BCW hit back when Aaron Wickingsscrambled home. With time running out, Wimborne’s teamspirit and togetherness came to the fore.Wimborne forced a corner. The ball wasinitially cleared but fell to Jack Bradleyjust outside the D. He calmly dinked theball over the onrushing defender and hit adipping volley over the BCW GK. The ballhit the cross-bar and fell kindly for GeorgeDeem to head home. With 90 seconds re-maining, After a succession of Wimborne-corners, the ball was cleared across thefield. A quick Wimborne throw-in takenby Gibson, caught the BCW defence flat-footed and Charlie Moore swept home theleveller. The final whistle brought a high-spirited game to a close with the honourseven at 3-3.

MANAGER Steve Cuss refused to blame Wimborne Town’s striker shortage for Satur-day’s 3-1 setback against Tiverton Town.Magpies were without marksman Mark Gamble for the clash with his replacement MattKemble forced off after just 20 minutes having taken a heavy blow to the foot. The match had ebbed and flowed but a fine individual effort from Jimmy Hinds threeminutes after half-time set Tivvy on their way, with James Mudge’s brace putting thevisitors in control.Cuss shuffled his pack and Jamie Davidson pulled one back for the hosts after his initialshot had cannoned off an opponent but it was too little, too late as Wimborne’s fourmatch unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end.The Cuthbury boss admitted his side’s lack of potency had proved decisive but stoppedshort of pointing the finger at Lady Luck.Cuss told the Daily Echo: “Tiverton’s finishing was excellent and their goals were wor-thy of winning the game but we created a number of chances ourselves, so I was pleasedwith the overall performance.“We lost Matt (Kemble) early on and without Mark (Gamble) that was quite damagingto our cause but I would never want to use that as an excuse.”Magpies: Harvell, Arnold, Maybury, Oliver, Costello (Lupton, 67), Blake, Griffin, Dav-idson, Webb, Kemble (Powell, 20), Stokoe. Unused subs: Brimson, Biles, Field (g/k).

City to pay for crest tattoos to be removedFor some Manchester City supporters, proposals to change the club crest really have gotunder their skin. Fortunately, officials at the Barclays Premier League club have a solu-tion - free tattoo removal for supporters inked with the old design.City are in the process of redrawing their badge to bring the club into line with otheroutfits in the City Football Group, the parent company that also owns New York Cityand Melbourne City, both of whom display a circular design, as opposed to the existingshield and eagle crest introduced in 1997.A lengthy period of consultation was undertaken with fans, who will soon be presentedwith a choice of designs for final approval. For fans who had the redundant design tat-tooed on their bodily parts, the changes could leave them looking rather outdated.City are expected to offer those supporters free laser removal. Prices for a six-coursetattoo removal range from £300, for a tattoo measuring up to 8cm by 8cm, to about£2,000 for designs of about 30 cm across.
