Sarks club at Cedarcrest Middle

Big Brothers Big Sisters has been the nation’s leader in mentoring since 19 . In recent years, group

mentoring has become a popular way to serve more children while maintaining a high standard of staff

support to mentors. Similar to our Kids Book Clubs, Sparks Club is a group mentoring program for

middle school students. A Spark is a special interest, talent, or activity that a young person is passionate

about. Sparks Clubs meet weekly during students’ lunch hour for group activities, guest speakers, and

discussion time. Caring adults actively assist students in finding their Spark and nurturing it.

Currently, Sparks Club is active at Cedarcrest Middle School in Marysville. We have two groups who

meet weekly – one Girls’ Club and one Boys’ Club. The Sparks Girls are a group of 8th graders who meet

weekly with two female mentors and a BBBS staff member. The girls do games and activities centered

on a curriculum that includes topics such as Self Confidence, Leadership, Cultural Competency, and

Bullying. Guest speakers are brought in to provide insight from the community and leadership examples

for the girls. The Sparks girls came up with an amazing project for the holidays – they collected supplies

for the women’s shelter! A Marysville Soroptimist member came to speak to the group and picked up the

kits the girls had made for the women. They had so much fun giving back to the community that they are

now raising money to buy a goat for a community in Africa. We are so proud!
