Happy New Year, everyone! Can you believe it is already 2014?
Though Christmas has come and gone, the Church looked stunning for the
season. Please join me in thanking Mason Rhodus and Jeffrey Hale, John and Sarah
Atkins, the Smith family, Mark McCammish, Anne Hall and Joyce Fehr – and any-
one I may have unintentionally left out – for sharing their gifts and skills to help en-
hance our worship experience. We had 88 people at the Christmas Eve service –
wow! It was wonderful to see the church filled as we welcomed new friends and old
into our Christmas celebrations.
New visitors have not been limited to Christmas Eve, either. Over the past
couple of months we have had several visitors on Sunday mornings, as well, and in
the last month a few people have expressed interest in becoming members of the
parish. We’ll be offering a confirmation class for those individuals this spring – how
exciting! Please keep up the evangelism – talking about your faith and why you feel
fulfilled at Emmanuel – because it really does make a difference.
I am mindful that this is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on our biblical call
to hospitality and welcome in the name of our God. By virtue of our baptism, par-
ticularly emphasized in the 1979 BCP, every one of us are ambassadors of God’s
love to those we encounter. I have been reflecting on St. Paul’s letter to the Romans,
in which he names the marks of a true Christian. Romans 12:9-13 paints a beautiful
picture of our ideal family life in God: “Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold
fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in
showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in
hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the
saints; extend hospitality to strangers.”
I was struck by the phrase “outdo one another in showing honor.” Have you
ever been the recipient of a competition to show you honor? Can you remember the
last time you tried to outdo someone else in showing another person honor? I imag-
ine it would make each one of us feel pretty good, to think that we were worthy of
such effort and attention. How would our definition of competition change if we
were consistently offering higher status to the person next to us?
Such is the kind of hospitality that St. Paul encourages us in. Not competi-
tion for personal gain or honor, not competition with each other to show one another
up, but competition to make every person feel as special and loved as God thinks
they are.
There are some very simple ways we can show visitors honor:
• Look around as you come in and, if you see someone new, greet them first
with something like this: “Hello, my name is ____. I just wanted to say I’m
so glad you’re here. Please let me know if you have questions.” Then talk
with them if they do.
• Ask if they know how to use the books in the pew – if not, offer to sit with
them and show them how to get along in the service.
• Greet them first, before anyone else, at the Peace.

January 2014 The Evangel Page 3
• Offer to escort them over to coffee hour.
• Ask questions! How did they decide to visit Emmanuel? Would they like information about
parish activities? Do they have questions about our denomination and what we believe?
• Ask if they have any prayer requests and offer to pray for, or better yet, with them.
Remember, the goal is not to overwhelm our visitors, but to treat our neighbor as if we are actu-
ally interested in the value they bring to our community. This past year we have prayed the collect of
welcome each Sunday – are we willing to put our words into action and practice what we preach?
I wonder what would happen if we made it our mission to treat every person walking in our doors as that
special. What might happen if our visitors felt like they were already an integral, necessary part of our
community simply because they walked in the door that morning? Do our own parishioners feel that way
when they leave? Do our visitors feel that way when they leave?
If so, then perhaps we will see our church grow fuller week by week. If not, then it’s time for all
of us to consider taking our hospitality to the next level. May we outdo one another in showing God’s
love, in our words and deeds, to every person walking in our doors.
Peace and blessings to you,
Rev. Chana
Annual MeetingAnnual MeetingAnnual MeetingAnnual Meeting: The Annual parish meeting will be held this coming Sunday, January 12 immediately
following the 10:30 service. Join us for a potluck lunch (email Robin with what you are bringing) and to
hear about the ministries and upcoming plans for the year.
Vestry nominationsVestry nominationsVestry nominationsVestry nominations: The coming year is going to be an exciting one! If you are interested in having
direct input into Emmanuel’s life and ministry, it’s a great time to be on Vestry! Together we will focus
on discovering our foundations, focusing our identity, envisioning our future, and putting together a
plan to reach the goals that came out of our Holy Conversations. The Nominating Committee (David
Codell, Sue Noble, and Elizabeth Long) are collecting names now, and elections will be held at our An-
nual Meeting . The canonical requirements for selection are that you be a member in good standing of
Emmanuel, faithful in worship, prayer, giving, and contributing to parish life. Speak to Rev. Chana or
the Committee Members if you’d like more information or if you are feeling called to put your name on
the ballot.
118th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Lexington
will be held in Covington, Kentucky
on February 20th—22nd
At the Diocesan Convention the business of the Diocese is undertaken. Please keep Rev. Chana along
with our delegates and alternates, as well as our Diocese in your prayers. More information can be

services are cancelled due to severe weather. Please know, if
we close due to weather for the 8 AM service, we won't
have services at all that day. And, as always, if the weather is
