17 kilometers The Vasco da Gama bridge is the longest bridge in Europe, measuring 17 kilometers from end to end

Guinness World Records The Church of Santa Engrácia in Lisbon has entered the Guinness World Records as having the longest construction time of any church. Work began in the 17th century and was only completed in 1966

Earthquake In 1755 a huge earthquake – known as the Great Lisbon earthquake – struck the capital. It destroyed many ancient buildings and triggered a tsunami which engulfed the harbor and downtown area of Lisbon

8,000 Lisbon’s oceanarium is one of the world’s largest aquariums. It has 8,000 different sea creatures, separated inside the main tank into four habitats by transparent acrylic walls, giving the impression that they are all swimming in the same water – all seven million liters of it

Baixa Baixa in downtown Lisbon is the city’s main shopping and banking district. The ornate city center is flagged by tiled art deco shop fronts, pastry shops and tailors. The baroque streets are named according to the shopkeepers and craftsman who traded in the area

Custard Pasteis de nata is a Lisbon delicacy. The sweet custard tart is reproduced throughout the city, but according to locals there is only one place to get them: Casa Pastéis de Belém was the very first bakery to sell the pastry and is still open today
