Sylvain de Lescazes President of Institut de Soudure Group

Our group, which has offices on the 5 continents, is recognised for its expertise built over more than hundred years of experience, its technological know-how, its capacity for innovation and its academic and vocational training resources. As the French Industrial Technical Centre for joining and associated testing, we provide knowledge, innovation and support to the profession as a whole. We bring innovative answers to all industrial companies during the design, manufacturing or maintenance of equipment with safety and preservation of property and the environment as essential requirements.

Despite an often unfavourable environment in France and abroad, our turnover has improved in 2016 by 5 per cent and has exceeded the €100 M milestone for the first time in its history. The market conditions have remained difficult in particular for our activities related to the oil industry since the fall of crude oil prices in 2015 and their subsequent stabilisation at around $50/bbl. In spite of this situation, Institut de Soudure Group keeps developing the diversification strategy, at both the geographical and sectorial level, for example, with the development of its activities in the nuclear and aeronautics fields.

One of the satisfactions in 2016 has been the successful integration of the teams who joined us during our last acquisition in the field of composites. This has allowed the Group to significantly increase its activity in the aeronautics, automotive and nautical areas.

Beyond this strategy, which contributes to the growth of the Group and to the diversification of its risks, we remain firmly committed to our other development priorities: Research and innovation, which primarily enable us to remain at the forefront of technological progress thanks to the allocation of a significant part of the income from our commercial activities. Developing and subsequently launching new products, especially in the training, expertise and non-destructive testing (NDT) sectors. Finally, in France as abroad, we remain attentive to opportunities for external growth through acquisitions and selective partnerships.

In 2016, we launched a very broad reflection on the impact of the digital economy and other emerging technologies on our activities. In this spirit, our group is integrated in the French national initiative “Alliance for the Industry of the Future” and in May 2017, it organised the first edition of ICWAM (International Congress on Welding and Additive Manufacturing), which brought together 300 researchers, manufacturers and industrialists representing more than 20 countries.

In 2017, Institut de Soudure Group is therefore more determined than ever to prepare its future at the service of industry, while keeping a constant eye on safety and quality. It will continue relying on a strong enterprise culture to offer excellence to its customers: quality, professionalism, innovation and responsiveness are the key values shared by all employees.

INDUSTRIAL MEMBERS

EXPANDING THE RANGE OF SERVICESThe association of industrial members brings together nearly 290 member companies: companies of all sizes and in all sectors who share the same interest in metallic materials or composites, joining and the associated testing. Through the years, Institut de Soudure has developed the range of services it provides for its members. Added to the usual services of telephone support and technical intelligence, both normative and regulatory, are the transmission of a newsletter and the open house at our laboratories during the technical days in Villepinte, which experts of the group participated in organising. Some technical days were outsourced for the first time: the Aeronautical day to the Aérocampus Aquitaine of Bordeaux and the Rail day in Lille jointly with the Sifer. Early 2017 also saw the launch of the “Expert Breakfasts” to allow industrial members to attend a videoconference with an expert on a topical issue at the regional agency of the Group nearest to them. The first, discussing the problem of welding fumes, was a great success.

A GLOBAL RESPONSE

IN COMPOSITESSince 2016, Institut de Soudure Group has continued to gain strength in composite materials and now markets its services under the Composite Integrity brand, in France and abroad. The Group relies on the solid expertise of Composite Integrity, a subsidiary created in 2010 with PPE (Pôle de plasturgie de l’Est) and 100% owned by the Group since March 2016, and it is capitalising on the industrial returns and the most recent developments in plastics and composites.

With two main priorities: services - mechanical, chemical and fire tests; non-destructive testing; expertise and audits; training - and industrial development and engineering, in the Composite laboratory at Saint-Avold

in Moselle (East, France).

This research laboratory caters to the needs of industry by developing the technologies and processes that will ensure rapid gains in performance at all stages of the production process, particularly in the aeronautics and automotive industries.

Our Identity

Our involvement in the majority of the profession's organisations in France and abroad, as founding member, member or partner, is still an integral part of the Group's activities: Afiap, AFS, Aquap, Cofrend, EWF, FIM, IIW, Iseetech, SIS, SNCT, Symop, etc.

Composites Laboratory in Saint-Avold

TO ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPROVE PROSPECTS FOR DEVELOPMENT, INSTITUT DE SOUDURE GROUP DEFINED NEW STRATEGIC PRIORITIES IN ORDER TO SEIZE GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES IN FRANCE AND ABROAD, AND TO DIVERSIFY ITS RISKS.

WHO WE ARE

Loyal to its background, the Group's ambition is to serve and assist companies that are members of the association and, more generally, businesses regardless of their size, set-up and sector.

Inspection, testing and investigation in the oil, gas and chemical sectors have made up the core of our commercial activities for a long time. Since the construction of the first oil and gas pipelines in Algeria, France and Tunisia in the fifties, Institut de Soudure Group has maintained close ties with the Oil and Gas sector and its major contractors in France and abroad. Technical assistance and investigation remain flagship activities, now combined with our testing and training activities.

One of the driving priorities that underpins the Group’s development is internationalisation. We are present in France – our historic birthplace –, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Oceania. Our local infrastructures, coupled with itinerant and multi-disciplinary international teams, factor in the technical and cultural particularities of our customers. We have been present in China since 2015 with the creation of a joint venture with GTEC in Shenzhen.

We are continuing to develop our activities in the nuclear and aeronautic sectors, and more generally in transport, within the framework of our market and product diversification. Our Group has leveraged its unique expertise and know-how on these markets: R&D in the fields of innovative joining processes and advanced testing; inspection and training in the field of regulated equipment; development and implementation of non-destructive testing techniques on metal or composite assemblies.

AT THE SERVICE

OF THE AERONAUTICS AND SPACE INDUSTRYThree of the Institut de Soudure Group’s sites (Bordeaux-Latresne, Gonfreville-L’Orcher, Lisses) received their Part 145 accreditation for non-destructive testing in the field of aeronautics. These accreditations allow the Group to carry out testing

in the field of aeronautics on parts undergoing maintenance and issue certificates to authorise their re-operation. The Group also offers complete services in production and assembly (OEM) and in aircraft maintenance (MRO). With regard to metal and composites, we currently provide training (training centre EN 4179 Cosac), inspection, materials characterization and testing, audits and expertise, as well as R&D and engineering, and have obtained numerous customer acccreditations, approvals and acknowledgements: EN 9100, PRI Nadcap, Dassault Aviation, Safran, Sabena Technics, etc. The Group is also present in clusters, including Aériades Aérocampus, Aquitaine, ASTech Paris Region, SAFE cluster and NAE.

OurFuture

External growth is another strategic priority. After several acquisitions in 2014 and in 2015, the Group has not completed additional major operations in 2016. The last one to date concerns the R&D activities and engineering of PPE (Pôle de Plasturgie de l’Est), which have strengthened Institut de Soudure Group in the area of composite materials.

RESEARCH AND EXPERTISERESEARCH AND EXPERTISE

Our Expert CommunityTo respond to the most complex technical issues, the Group relies on its community of Experts in the Institut de Soudure's core skills.

The technical skills of Institut de Soudure Group are the foundation of its areas of activity, whether for internal or external customers. To promote ongoing development of our employees' know-how, to retain talented people and to offer stimulating prospects to those aiming for a career in technology, we have set up an Expert Community, a real distinction awarded to our employees possessing exceptional technical profiles, and who are recognised both within and outside the Group.

Four areas, each led by a Senior Expert (Fellow), have been defined: materials and assemblies, design and lifespan of equipment, testing and monitoring, inspection and regulations. This channel currently comprises about twenty Experts. It is led by the Innovation Director.

In their respective areas, the Experts must devote a large amount of their time to capitalising on experience, recommending quick and effective solutions to current issues, monitoring changes and performing essential experiments on emerging technologies and, finally, transferring their knowledge to prepare the Experts of tomorrow.Symposium on Structural Composites

The 9th edition of the International Symposium on Structural Composites (8 and 9 June 2016) was organised by Institut de Soudure Group, the French Society of Plastics Engineers (SFIP), the French Institute of Technology (FIT) M2P and the French Plastics Automotive Converters Group (Groupement Plasturgie Automobile - GPA), in the East of France, at Saint-Avold and on the business Composite Park at Porcelette. This symposium, which brought together more than 300 people, among them researchers and international industrialists, was devoted to the latest developments and applications for structural composite materials in the automotive, aeronautics, railway and nautical fields.

Composite Park is a technology operations park dedicated to research and development by innovative enterprises in the field of materials and new energies. Institut de Soudure Group is located in two buildings,

one used for non-destructive testing of composite materials under the Composite Integrity brand and the other, recently opened, housing the materials characterisation laboratory. The participants in the symposium had the opportunity to view demonstrations of the C-Scan, dynamic thermography and vibrothermography and the mechanical tests and analyses of composite materials.

The Group is also collaborating on the new platform FAST-RTM of the FIT M2P. Its purpose: to develop the tools and processes capable of producing structural composite parts at the rates required by the automotive sector: 1 composite part coming out of the mould every two minutes. The partners of the industrial pilot project were awarded a JEC Innovation Award in March 2017 during the JECworld exhibition in Paris.

Demonstration on the FAST-RTM platform of FIT M2P, a partner of Institut de Soudure.

T he Joining Laboratory is dedicated to the study and industrialisation of manual, automated and robotic welding and soldering processes.

The project Multimaterial joining solutions (SAM),, which is jointly led with the French Institute of Technology M2P and the partners ArcelorMittal, Air Liquide, Constellium and the Renault group, concerns in particular the study of the different aluminium alloy and HLE (high elastic limit) steel sheet joining processes, for applications in the automotive sector: MAG welding, brazing, MIG resistance projection welding, friction melt bonding (FMB) or magnetic pulse welding.

We are currently working on developing new wire-feed metal additive manufacturing solutions. The advantages of wire in relation to powder are higher productivity and the possibility to make large pieces without the disadvantages that come with the use of powders (cost, recycling of partially or non-fused powders, HSE constraints, etc.).

In friction stir welding (FSW), the collaboration between our dedicated center, Airbus Defense & Space (ADS) and RJ industry has helped to establish the welding parameters and to achieve the technological demonstrators representative of a shell of an ergol tank. The manufacture of 5 mock-ups with a diameter of 2.3 m corresponds to a qualification level of TRL5. Following the success of these prototypes, Airbus Safran Launchers decided to replace the process of TIG arc welding, usually used and qualified for the welding of space structures since the beginning of the ARIANE program, by the FSW process coupled with an automation solution for assembling the cryogenic tanks of the next European Ariane 6 launcher.

Circumferential welding of a representative demonstrator of an ergol tank shell at Institut de Soudure.

The Non-Destructive Testing Laboratory is developing testing and monitoring methods suited to metal, composite or ceramic materials, the monitoring of facilities in service

and the supervision of their ageing process. This includes the detection of early or inaccessible damage, hot or contact-free testing, testing of complex geometries, integrated sensors, etc.

Monitoring is a growing industrial concern. It now constitutes a research priority and major development within Institut de Soudure. The collaborative project Horizon Hydrogen Energy (H2E), supported by bpifrance, is in line with this theme of monitoring of composite hydrogen tanks under pressure. Institut de Soudure has thus developed a complete system integrating the entire chain of measurement (from the sensor to the signal processing), as well as the algorithms that enable an evaluation of the damage to this kind of equipment in service. In 2016, a tank made up of intelligent sensors was created: it is able to both generate guided waves (active control) and receive acoustic emissions (passive control).

Institut de Soudure won a prize for technological innovation for all these developments at the International Symposium on Structural Composites, in June 2016.

A tracking device by means of acoustic emission of a hydrogen tank equipped with intelligent sensors (project H2E).

A RESEARCH NETWORKInstitut de Soudure relies on a network of industrial and academic partners in France and abroad.

RESEARCH AND EXPERTISERESEARCH AND EXPERTISE

T he Mechanical Testing and Corrosion Laboratory specialises in monitoring the behaviour of materials and assemblies in-service, with major expertise in mechanical

testing and material corrosion resistance. It is possible to characterize small samples and validate the in-service strength of 70-tonne 1:1 scale structures. Tests on railway vehicle were conducted in 2016 and have helped to validate the structural behaviour under conditions of service.

Our skills in the field of corrosion have been highlighted in several expert inspections carried out on site, including lines and water containment tanks. Our fracture mechanics business line was very active in 2016 with type KID dynamic tests and enhancing knowledge of the propagation mechanisms of defects and their consequences.

We have successfully developed a specific test bench: This makes it possible to perform combined tests (static traction in one direction and traction in fatigue in another) at a cryogenic temperature, with the aim of reproducing the service conditions of the structure.

Validating your designsDuring the design phase, in order to improve the mechanical strength of structures, our multidisciplinary E3C team (Expertise, Consulting, Calculations, Design) checks structure designs as regards staticity, fatigue and creep. They provide advice on the choice of materials, geometric modifications and completion operations. Within the regulatory framework of the Association for the safety of pressure equipment (Asap), the E3C team is authorised to establish and verify calculation notes of new pressure equipment.

Extending service lifeThe management of ageing industrial equipment is a main concern for both operators and contractors. To remedy this aging, we are deploying advanced approaches: structure monitoring surveillance; Risk Based Inspection(RBI); Fitness-for-Service (FFS) studies; residual life assessment, etc.

After the detection of defects or damage, incidentally or not, the E3C team conducts defect assessment or Fitness-for-Service studies to answer these two questions: Do the defects compromise continuation of the operation? Is it possible to extend operations, without immediate repair or a costly replacement? Whether involving sudden brittle rupture, ductile or creep failure or creep-fatigue interaction, we calculate the propagation of defects and estimate the remaining lifetime of the equipment. To rehabilitate a corroded or cracked structure, we develop transitional strengthening solutions with operators and define, in a pragmatic manner, subsequent repair or welding procedures.

Following a fire, the E3C team establishes and implements assessment processes and steps to restore materials and facilities affected by the damage. It has significant experience in enforcing reference codes such as API 579 section 11, Assessment of Fire Damage.

Failure AnalysisWe assist legal experts and insurers, on-site and in the laboratory, in their investigations covering litigations and claims on all forged or moulded metal parts, with or without welding and on composite materials. E3C's activity is both recognised as a third-party organisation and as a technical expert assessment centre. We examine dossiers as part of third-party analysis of inspection reports and carry out bibliographic studies on corrosion, metallurgy and welding. When manufacturing problems are detected, the E3C team carries out technical and Quality audits.

Combining efficiency

with high-tech methodsThe IS Experts centre provides expert assessment services to characterise information identified using high-tech NDT techniques and provide a diagnosis. This highly qualified, bilingual team is formed of experts, in the application of ultrasonic techniques (Phased Array and TOFD), electromagnetic techniques (ACFM, eddy currents), digital radiography, guided ultrasonic waves, digital simulation of NDTs, etc. The cell also develops application software, conducts feasibility studies and provides audits and technical supervision of large-scale projects, as well as mentoring and training the Group's controlling agents. Moreover, IS Experts maintain close ties with materials manufacturers in order to validate their equipment.

We define and optimise technologies and processes, from design to implementation: closed mould process engineering (RTM, Infusion, HP RTM, C RTM); process-oriented part design; process definition and 2D-3D simulation; manufacturing procedure drafting; prototypes; thermo-plastic composite assemblies (resistive welding, induction, co-consolidation); technical and economic studies; monitoring and testing of composite structures.

We participate in the development of the technologies for the joining and manufacturing of parts made from composite materials that meet the requirements of automotive and aerospace manufacturers, with high speed cycle times.

2016 has been marked by important developments in aeronautics, with induction welding projects of composites with a high performance thermoplastic PEEK or PPS matrix.

Dive into the Industry of the FutureThe industry of tomorrow won’t be a simple system of goods production but a chain of creation, production and new uses that is perpetually changing.

The digital revolution that is currently underway will structurally change the industrial world. With digital tools, the world has entered the era of data and virtualisation, which has already changed the procedures, behavior, activities and modes of work. In fact, businesses are in upheaval and need to take stock of their positioning in this new digital environment and the impact of new technologies. Institut de Soudure Group is no exception to the rule and its research and innovation programmes take into account these new directions, which affect many industrial sectors.

This concerns in particular:- Studying welding in connection with the Internet of Things (IoT),- Studying the replacement of conventional parts by the wire-feed

metal additive manufacturing,- The development of high productivity manufacturing processes

(welding, high-frequency composite, Fast RTM etc.) - Multimaterial assembly, in particular metal/composite,- The monitoring of the manufacturing process (welding, FSW,

composite, etc.) to make it more reliable and more flexible,- The use of new NDT techniques based on reconstruction in phased

array ultrasound (TFM/FMC), the laser generation of ultrasound or the uses of guided waves in inaccessible areas,

- The development of structural health monitoring (SHM),- The development of intelligent sensors integrated into the structures

and of measurement techniques,- The replacement of conventional NDT techniques by those that

limit dosimetry and are more environmentally friendly,- The use of techniques resulting from the processing of data

(big data) to improve the reliability of NDT diagnostics,- The development of digital learning.

INSTITUT DE SOUDURE GROUP // 2017 EDITION INSTITUT DE SOUDURE GROUP // 2017 EDITION12 13

THE TRAINING OFFERED IN FRANCE AND ABROAD COVERS ALL ASPECTS OF WELDING: WELDING, BRAZING, SOLDERING PRACTICE, JOINING TECHNOLOGIES, MANUFACTURING CODES AND REGULATIONS, NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT), SAFETY AND RADIATION PROTECTION.

Institut de Soudure Group was the first organisation, in 1909, to offer welding classes in France and has continued to extend its metallurgy training range ever since. We currently offer training for welders, pipe-fitters, welding coordinators, boilermakers, solderers, controllers and inspectors. These professions are essential components of industrial processes and are under-subscribed in terms of current business needs. They offer excellent career prospects.

We also contribute to certifying people through five CIFM examination centres that are approved by the French Confederation for Non-Destructive Testing (Cofrend). We also host the examination centre for welding inspection agents approved by the French Association of Welding (AFS).

Thanks to our long-term expertise in training, businesses can enhance their staff skills and develop their fields of activity and export markets. Employees can also increase their qualification, certification or expertise level, or move into a new profession.

Finally, young people and job seekers ease their entry into the job market with a qualification or certification. We can perform pre-course assessments to identify the type and duration of training so that it is tailored to your needs, whether you are a job-seeker, industrial company or temporary employment agency. This analysis is based on objective criteria.

Following the reform of vocational training in France (law of 24 March 2014), we have registered the majority of the certifying training courses on the inventory of the French Professional Certification Commission (CNCP), which allows them to be funded by approved agencies. These courses are also eligible for aid under the personal training account (CPF) and open to job-seekers.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

A certification recognised by the Cnefop and registered in DatadockThe vocational training from Institut de Soudure Industrie has been assessed by AFNOR Certification and declared in conformity with the "Compliance in continuing vocational training” frame of reference for three years, starting from 20 April 2017. This certification is recognised by the French National Council for employment, training and vocational guidance (CNEFOP) as being in compliance with Decree no. 2014-935 of 20 August 2014 and Decree no. 2015-790 of 30 June 2015, which entered into force on 1 January 2017.

Based on the evidence provided by us, AFNOR Certification has assessed our compliance with the six regulatory criteria, with an additional seventh quality criterion defined by AFNOR Certification:

1. The precise identification of the training objectives and their adaptation to the trained public;

2. The adaptation of reception, educational follow-up and evaluation facilities in public of trainees;

3. The adequacy of the teaching, technical and managerial methods;

4. The professional qualification and the ongoing training of staff responsible for training;

5. The conditions for the provision of information to the public on the training provided, the admissions deadlines and the results obtained;

6. How the assessments made by the trainees are taken into account;

7. Compliance with legal and regulatory obligations imposed on the training.

Compliance with the requirements of these decrees enables us to demonstrate the consistent quality of our training activities to funding organisations and to our customers who benefit from our training. Thanks to this E-AFAQ Vocational Training certification, Institut de Soudure Industrie has been able to register in the single Datadock for its four centres: Port-of-Bouc, Corbas, Yutz and Villepinte, which covers all 17 training centres in France. Datadock was created by 20 French approved vocational training funds (OPCAs and OPACIF) to centralise the declaration of training providers who provide evidence of their compliance with the quality criteria defined by the law, through a common list of 21 indicators.

Quality InfrastructuresAfter the opening of four new centres in 2015, it is the turn of the Lisse and Dunkerque centres to benefit from consistent investment, mainly for training in welding.

The Lisses centre now has 12 multipurpose welding booths, in addition to a space reserved for technological training. In Dunkerque, training activities are taking place in the new premises, close to our old address. The centre has 12 cabins equipped with brand new facilities.

IW certifications in a high schoolInstitut de Soudure Group has participated in training twelve students at the Brossaud-Blancho vocational training secondary school in Saint-Nazaire.

They spent one year preparing for the supplementary Welding module, alternating with working in a company from the Saint Nazaire industrial area. Six of them have extended this qualification recognised by the National Education with the addition of an international Welder (IW) certification, awarded by the French Welding Association (AFS). The coupling of a national diploma with an international private certification is a first in France and an excellent indicator of the level of the young people at the completion of their training. The provision of the IW certification has brought together representatives of the AFS, National Education, Institut de Soudure Group and the National Union of Boilers, Piping and Industrial Maintenance (SNCT).

Another new element is that Institut de Soudure Group is diversifying and strengthening its position in composites and provides you the opportunity to discover composite materials, their manufacturing processes in the aeronautic sector and the requirements for manufacturing parts.

Job seekersSince 1996, Institut de Soudure Group has given job seekers access to its training programmes and implemented professional training systems from French classification levels V to III. We are knowledgeable about funding and partnerships between companies seeking qualified staff and public authorities. The cost of extended training is mostly covered by the relevant regional authorities or by the European Social Fund (ESF). More than 95 % of job seekers trained in our centres as part of a regional training programme find employment within three months of their training.

Work-study modulesTo facilitate professional integration of young people and to satisfy industrial firms that need skilled staff in welding and in NDT, we offer work-study modules.

The supplementary Welding and NDT controller modules are a gateway to activities with an employment rate in excess of 90% in the aeronautic, rail, oil, chemistry and nuclear sectors.

The supplementary modules are aimed at candidates holding a CAP, BEP or Bac Pro in fields connected to metallurgy, mechanics or materials. They last around a year and alternate between in-company placements (one to two weeks a month) and theoretical and practical training, three quarters of which examine technologies for future professions (500 to 600 hours).

Ongoing trainingOur training range consists of 170 courses. We also offer tailored sessions for your specific needs in our centres or on your premises.

The practical training focuses on the use of best practices in typical welding and brazing processes and prepares students for brazing, welding and pipe-fitting qualifications. We also adapt to the specific needs of your applications (process, material and welding position).

To reduce your travelling costs and optimise your training time, we organise mobile workshops in your premises and ensure you benefit from the best learning resources.

The Group proposes technological training which is essential for understanding the metallurgy of steel, understanding welded and soldered joints, designing and sizing welded equipment, understanding the various deterioration processes or finding out about manufacturing regulations and codes.

You can export your skills – qualified welder through to engineer – to 59 countries as a result of international training programmes for welding (IW), welding coordinators (IWP/EWCP/IWS/IWT/IWE) and welding inspection personnel (IWIP) in line with the standards of the International Institute of Welding (IWIP) and the European Welding Federation (EWF). You thus prepare your company for welding certifications (EN ISO 3834 and EN 15085 for the rail sector and EN 1090 for metal-based structures).

Our non-destructive testing (NDT) and radiation protection training also targets all levels, enabling students to understand the causes and development of defects and master the various conventional and innovative testing methods. We prepare you for CIFM (re)certification and Cofrend Cosac exams, from levels 1 to 3, and for ASNT exams and for the Aptitude certificate for operating industrial radiology equipment (Camari) exams.

Since the integration of Microniks Europe into Institut de Soudure Group in 2015, the brazing activity for electronic applications has been grouped under the Microniks brand. The electronic soldering training we provide is dedicated to mastering the main rules of brazing, crimping and wire bonding as well as the inspection of electronic assemblies and wiring harnesses and cables. As proof of quality, our instructors hold Certified IPC Trainer (CIT) or Master IPC Trainers (MIT) certificates. They regularly provide their services in design offices and in manufacturing workshops. We provide training for IPC certfications - Association Connecting Electronics Industries and training approved by the ESA - the European Space Agency.

Safety is a priority for all industries: the Group is developing the Safety training it provides by relying on the expertise of trainers in Niort and Tours. Under the CSTA brand, around ten different courses are being added to those offered by our partner, Qualiconsult Formation.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

THE SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL WELDING TRAINING (EAPS) AND THE HIGHER SCHOOL OF WELDING AND WELDING APPLICATIONS (ESSA) TRAIN THE WELDING TECHNICIANS AND ENGINEERS OF TOMORROW IN ONE YEAR.

Institut de Soudure Group has two graduate schools specialised in welding that enjoy international renown, both situated in Lorraine, in the East of France. In 1930, Institut de Soudure opened a specialised engineering school: Higher School of Autogenous Welding (ESSA), followed by a second school in 1936 for operators and technicians: the Professional School of Welding (EPS).

They respectively became the Higher School of Welding and Welding Applications (ESSA) in 1980 and the School of Professional Welding Training (EAPS) in 1985. Today the schools are an integral part of Institut de Soudure Group and benefit from a first-class scientific and technological environment with an industrial technical centre and research laboratories on the same campus.

ESSA trains, in one year, engineers in the highest welding coordination functions, as defined by welding Quality standards. The ESSA issues the ESSA engineering diploma, recognised by the French Committee for Engineering Qualifications (CTI) and the International Welding Engineer (IWE) diploma, issued by the French Welding Association (AFS) under authority of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and recognised in 59 countries.

The EAPS trains qualified staff in one year in the manufacturing of welded equipment, technical assistance and commercial support. The EAPS issues the Coordinator in welding and welded construction certificate, referenced at level 2 in the French Professional

For Your Equipment and Facilities

SolutionsCertification Register (RNCP), the International Welding Technologist (IWT) diploma and the professional degree in Industrial Production with specialisation in industrial design and production methods (MCPI), issued by the University of Lorraine. Since 2014, former EAPS students, if they have a professional degree and an IWT diploma, have the possibility to take an IWT > IWE bridge course lasting 140 hours to access IWE exams.

International appealBoth graduate schools recruit students and company employees or people undertaking professional retraining. This year, the ESSA took 35 engineers from 21 different schools. Among them were a Canadian student and a student from Togo. As for the EAPS, there were 38 students.

Partner companiesOur specialised schools have permanent contacts with the industrial world and the best experts regularly come to teach there. Like the main engineering schools, the ESSA and the EAPS have special relations with companies, thanks to Company-School partnerships. Thus, students have visited many production sites: Air Liquide Welding, Areva (CEDEM, CETIC and Usine de Saint-Marcel), EDF CNPE in Cattenom, Eiffage Construction Métallique, Fronius, Liebherr, etc.

A world of challenges is open to the students we train. Areas which involve welding are constantly growing: emergence of new materials, implementation of new or optimised processes, robotics, new regulations, etc. Highly-coveted by companies of all sizes and in all sectors, our graduates are able to update their knowledge to make astute strategic choices for their company throughout their career.

The new EAPS and ESSA logos are displayed on the building of the schools in Yutz.

10th place at the Vendée Globe 2016As a technical and financial partner of the sailor Arnaud Boissières, we participated in preparing his Imoca, La Mie Câline, before the Vendee Globe. We also followed his round-the-world trip with bated breath until his arrival in 10th place after more than 102 days of the race.

In addition to the checks imposed by the Imoca gauge before the solo start of the race, the Group carried out advanced tests (phased array ultrasound, 3D tomography, 3D laser digitisation, tap test bond master, thermography) on sensitive parts of the boat. "Cracks that we

didn't suspect have been detected on the rudder and the axes of the keel”, explained the skipper. “We then decided to change the parts before the race. This support has helped to reassure me about the state of the mast and the keel during the race.” Arnaud Boissières’ Imoca has again been inspected in the sailor's workshop in the spring of 2017. All these inspection and expertise services are now deployed on the racing boats (four other Imoca other have been tested) and recreational craft.

Safer equipment assetsDuring the preparation and monitoring of shutdowns, be they for regulatory or voluntary reasons, the Group offers a general service and is able to mobilise multi-disciplinary teams in France and abroad. Inspectors trained in corrosion issues along with certified controllers assist the operators' inspection departments at a very early stage. They are able to perform equipment inventories and identify potential sources of degradation. They perform Risk Based Inspections (RBI), optimise inspection plans and schedule conventional and high-tech non-destructive tests, even carrying out expert assessments in the more complex cases to determine the components' Fitness-For-Service. During the shutdown, teams work on the equipment, storage tanks and pipework, inspecting and controlling them, using rope access in difficult locations. If necessary, they recommend and monitor any repair work required. Finally, inspectors draw up technical dossiers to be submitted to the competent authorities to gain authorisation for re-entry into service of equipment.

Regulatory inspection Institut de Soudure Group is a member of Asap, the French agency authorised and notified by Brussels to assess and monitor regulated pressure equipment. In fulfilling this role, the Asap Inspectors of the Group are called upon to assess the compliance of new pressure equipment (PE) and the periodic requalification of PE in operation: reactors, spheres, pipes, portable tanks, along with PEs in the nuclear sector. They may be assisted in these evaluations by the Design and Calculations study cell. Institut de Soudure Group is also authorised to rule on the qualifications of staff and the qualification of operating procedures for permanent assemblies (QPAP and QMOAP).

Characterising metallic and composite materials and assembliesInstitut de Soudure Group offers all types of destructive tests for materials and assemblies. The group is also equipped with powerful destructive testing benches, which allow various assignments to be undertaken for our customers, even those deployed abroad: characterisation and certification of materials (mechanical testing, chemical analysis, heat treatments, etc.), welding procedure qualification and welders' qualification and production of test samples.

The H2S corrosion laboratory in Bangkok, Thailand, performs resistance tests for Sulphide Stress Cracking (SSC), Hydrogen-Initiated Cracking (HIC and SOHIC) as well as ultrasonic tank testing.

Visual and dimensional digital inspection: external corrosion, mechanical damage and automated treatment for tubes

Our technicians were accompanied by IS Experts during checks of the heat exchangers by means of eddy currents / IRIS

In-service inspection of pipe bundles To detect under-thickness, pitting and corrosion and to size defects in pipe bundles, we select, from different techniques, the configurations best suited to your equipment: multi-frequency and multi-element eddy currents, far field or near field, leakage flux (RFT, NFT, MFL). As for the Iris rotating ultrasound technology, this tool accurately measures tube thickness prior to calculating the residual lifespan of exchangers. Heat exchangers, evaporators and condensers, cooling systems, boiler or steam generator tubes, to name a few, are concerned by these techniques.

Drone inspection Inspecting inaccessible components reliably and extremely quickly, without scaffolding or work at height: the use of drones adds a new dimension to visual and thermographic inspection and provides high-definition images.

We are able to intervene all over France with the necessary administrative procedures to inspect ovens, pylons, wind turbines, works of art, catenaries, etc. For each flight, our team is made up of an inspection expert, trained in the use of drones, and a pilot specialised in flights in complex environments, with drones that are configured to address your issue.

Checking integrity on-siteToday, Institut de Soudure Group can handle the whole NDT process, from the development and industrialisation of testing processes to their application on site, as well as training and certification of operatives. Our controllers are all Cofrend certified in the CIFM and COSAC sectors, and determine which methods, from the most traditional to the most innovative, are best suited to the issues faced by each company.

Reducing testing times To reduce testing costs, the Group is switching towards tests that are as quick as they are effective. 3D digitisation is used during surface inspection to measure the degree of corrosion, analyse any mechanical damage and quantify damaged areas thanks to a 3D colour map. Electromagnetic techniques (eddy currents and remote field) are an interesting alternative to liquid penetrant and magnetic particle inspections during the maintenance of tubes contained in heat-exchangers, condensers and other cooling systems in refineries and chemical sites.

Storage tanks We propose solutions in diagnostics, inspection, testing and investigation thanks to the know-how of our Tanks, IS Experts and E3C teams.

Within the framework of the regulatory obligation to verify the frangibility of vertical cylindrical fixed-roof tanks, in particular those prior to 2007, Institut de Soudure Group engineers were the first to develop an innovative methodology by digital simulation of finished elements. For non-frangible tanks, we propose a practical and economically competitive approach to make it frangible by repairing or locally modifying the structure. This has been approved on 12 to 25-metre-diameter tanks by French regional environment, planning and housing agencies (DREAL).

Thanks to the solution MargIS, without opening or emptying tanks in operation, we also look for damage caused by corrosion under the annular ring, in the inaccessible zones situated between the ground and the floor of tanks in operation. Advanced ultrasonic tests are carried out from outside the tank.

If there are defects in welded seals, Fitness-for-Service (FFS) studies determine the extent of risk for the structure or its environment. The E3C team also assesses the harmfulness of planar flaws (cracks, welding defects) discovered in the tank walls. They also verify the acceptability of the flatness of tank floors as per annex B of API653.

BE-tag, a patented solution for industrial radiography From the start of the x-ray inspections until the final minutes, the BE-tag solution securely and automatically connects the x-ray films to the welds, thanks to radio identification (RFID). The centralisation of data guarantees an automatic follow-up of the progress of the construction site. Among the benefits are the traceability of markings and a simplified localization of the x-rayed welds, increased inspection rates and the removal of lead and luminous markings.

Pipework and transport installations Institut de Soudure Group provides an overall service during the manufacturing process and for the monitoring of piping and transporting channels.

We provide design and manufacturing monitoring: technical

assistance, consultancy in welding, operator qualifications and

operating modes, standard and advanced tests, isometric creation

or tests on transit pipelines.

We take part in preventive maintenance, whether by surveillance

of cathodic protection, defect detection by guided waves, thickness

measurements or detection of damage caused by third parties. In

addition, we carry out material characterisation on-site and in our

different laboratories. We write testing programmes and regulatory

periodical inspection plans.

We choose the standard and advanced testing techniques (TOFD,

phased array with limited access sometimes on a single side),

including alternative industrial radiography methods to detect and

size the defects. We have also developed the Caméléon motorised

scanner which measures the dimensional criteria of weld beads

by laser profilometry according to the standard ISO 5817. It is

capable of achieving 3D scans of interior welds in pipes thanks to

its small footprint. This system has been authorised to replace visual

inspection on gas line installation projects.

We develop repair solutions (refilling/strengthening) using composite

patches. These solutions are validated by means of level 1 fatigue

and burst tests at the time in the implementation of the installation

and as they age. We qualify the personnel for the installation of these

patches.

We propose repair solutions by means of filling after elimination

of the defect and reconstitution of the material, without cutting off

the pipe: We demonstrate the validity of each step through calculations

and associated inspections.

We have a field school in Yutz, Lorraine, for projects on any type

of configuration, surface or coating, for excavation work or otherwise,

for qualifications, certifications of operators or devices, etc.

AN ACCREDITED ORGANISATION DEDICATED TO PERFORMING DIAGNOSTICS AND CERTIFICATION AUDITS IN THE FIELDS OF WELDING AND RELATED TECHNIQUES, IS CERTIFICATION ACCOMPANIES YOU TO ENHANCE YOUR WELDING KNOW-HOW.

WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF ALL OF ITS ACTIVITIES, INSTITUT DE SOUDURE GROUP, A COMPANY WITH A HUMAN DIMENSION, PUTS SAFETY AND THE PROTECTION OF PROPERTY AND THE ENVIRONMENT FIRST.

IS CERTIFICATION QUALITY AND SAFETY: OUR PRIORITY

Since 1st December 2015, IS Certification has been accredited by the Cofrac* to issue certifications according to the three main European or international guidelines in welding: the EN ISO 3834 series of standards concerning your welding production system; EN 15085-2 concerning the production system for welding of railway vehicles and their components; EN 1090-1 concerning metal structures in steel and aluminium. This allows us to issue the three certifications within the framework of a single assessment.

In many cases, these certifications have become vital passports for your company to become a supplier for major international contractors in the nuclear, oil, energy or lifting fields.

The operation of the IS certification is organised in such a way as to ensure the transparency, confidentiality and impartiality of decisions, according to the EN ISO/IEC 17065 standard. Its auditors, in charge of performing the assessments, all hold International Welding Technologist or Engineer (IWT or IWE) diplomas. We perform our interventions all over the world, at our customers' request, in French or in English. The IS certification website has been sized to accommodate requests for information and requests for certification from our customers (www.isgroupe.com).

Evidence of Quality OrganisationCompliance with EN ISO 3834 validates your welding production system. In addition, this standard is mentioned in numerous product standards: manufacturing pressure equipment (EN 113445); manufacturing hazardous materials transport tanks; manufacturing pipework (EN 12732), etc. Likewise, the application of certain welding qualification standards (EN ISO 9606-1 or ISO 24394 in aeronautics or space) allows you to give added value to EN ISO 3834 certification. Requests for certification are increasing in number, in particular for export: in Angola, Gabon, Morocco or Tunisia.

Risk and quality management are among the commitments of Institut de Soudure Group. We prioritise health and safety as well as the physical and psychological well-being of our employees, vocational training interns, subcontractor employees and visitors. These are the very terms of the main principle of our Health and Safety Charter. This Charter is underpinned by the sharing of a culture of transparency, information and feedback in line with the applicable laws and regulations.

Institut de Soudure Group is aiming to reach the goal of 'zero accidents'. With this in mind, we train and educate employees on safety and responsible conduct and promote the detection and handling of dangerous situations on our premises and work sites.

Radiation protection requirementTo meet our customers' needs, within the framework of our services we transport and implement devices that release ionising radiation. Our employees also have to intervene in nuclear activity establishments. These services are carried out within the framework of Institut de Soudure Group values, the Health and Safety Charter, our Quality plan and on the basis of three basic radiation protection principles. To protect the health of our employees and of the public, we have set ourselves the objectives of strict compliance with regulations, research into alternative methods to industrial radiography and feedback procedures. Our radiation protection management system has 190R certification from Qualianor for eight sites. More generally, our Health, Safety and Environment performance management system is certified for 13 of our sites in line with the MASE-UIC repository.

Certification Our Priorityof products

Quality and Safety:

A major player in railway certificationOver 100 companies, including the technical centres of French or Belgian national railway company (SNCF or SNCB), have thus obtained their EN 15085-compliant certifications in recent years. We mainly perform audits in Europe and North Africa. The awarded certificates are registered on the European railway register, which is an essential requirement for recognition by contractors. On an international level, IS Certification takes part in the European committee for the welding quality assurance of railway vehicles (ECWRV), which has renewed our recognition up to 2022. IS Certification also takes part in the development of the EN 15085 standard and in the setting-up of new accreditation requirements for organisations.

Affixing the CE markingIn order to comply with the mandatory affixing of the CE marking required by the Construction Products Regulation as of 1st July 2014, the organisations of manufacturers of steel or aluminium structural elements must be compliant with the EN 1090-1 standard. Compliance with this standard authorises your company to issue a Declaration of Performances and to affix this CE marking to the elements concerned.

As an accredited organisation (ON N 2541), IS Certification can carry out assessments to check compliance of the organisation’s procedures in place in the workshop. If the organisation complies with the EN 1090 programme, IS Certification is recognised by the Ministry to issue an attestation of compliance as per the 2+ module of assessment conformity. This document allows the manufacturer to establish attestations of performance for the productions concerned. Certificates issued by IS Certification are registered on the European site, which ensures visibility for certified companies abroad.
