FOREWORD by Jim KochFounder of The Boston Beer Company

I first heard about The Essential Reference of Domestic Brewers and Their Bottled Brands (DBBB)™ when I was introduced to Michael in Boston back in August of 2005.

His passion for creating one nationally recognized beer reference was apparent as he pulled out hishardcover draft of the book’s 1st Edition and handed it to me. It reminded me of my own early days, going bar-to-bar in Boston, letting bartenders taste my Samuel Adams Boston Lager®.

As I flipped through the pages and looked at the number of brewers and styles, and thought about how much the American craft brewing landscape changes each year, I think my words of encouragementwere something like, “well, this will be quite an undertaking.” Looking at the 2nd Edition you can see I was right, it is quite an undertaking, and the timing could not be any better.

To appreciate beer, one needs to experience its wide variety and taste its increasing diversity of flavor.Increasing drinker demand comes from increased education about the styles of beer available and theawareness of where these beers can be found.

The Essential Reference of Domestic Brewers and Their Bottled Brands (DBBB)™ and its on-line companionprovides anyone involved in the beer business, or really anyone having a passion for beer, a tool to helpexpand their appreciation for American brewing and the dedicated US brewers making great beer.

Cheers!

Jim

INTRODUCTION

Our goal in developing this unique resource was to publish an annual reference of all US breweries and their bottled brands. Our vision is to be the industry-recognized resource for information about alldomestic beer brands and their producers, and that all stakeholders in the three-tier beer distributionsystem will embrace and utilize the DBBB, as a means for enabling market demand through education and awareness building.

The Essential Reference of Domestic Brewers and their Bottled Brands™ is the first annually published beerreference to offer brewery and brand listings broken down alphabetically, by beer style, geographic location, and individual brewery portfolios. The Brewery Portfolio section is designed to offer brewers the opportunity to provide a more detailed description of their breweries and their marketed brands. These individual brand portfolios function well as shelf-talkers, and the DBBB itself is a great resource for retailers and consumers to find new beer brands. With the purchase of the DBBB you also receive access to the on-line DBBB database (updated monthly) and the printable Brewery Portfolios.

The DBBB™ and the companion web site indexes and details all domestic beer brewers and their bottled brands for beer retailers, beer wholesalers, convenience stores, supermarkets, and restaurants.

MC Basset, LLC collects, formats, indexes, and distributes this information through the DBBB. Brand information in this resource is provided, edited, and approved by the individual brewing companies or derived from individual brewery web sites. We do not evaluate, rank, rate, or guarantee any of the brands or specifically recommend the breweries listed in the DBBB.

We are not responsible for providing brand information for breweries that have not chosen to participate in this compilation or for those breweries not known to us before this edition went to press.Because brand information was provided by the manufacturer, we cannot accept responsibility forinaccuracies in the information provided directly to us or posted on the brewery web sites. The best source for brand specific information is the brewer.

A lot of time, effort and resources have gone into the creation of this book, we hope it becomes a prized resource.

BEER STYLE INDEX

This section provides detailed information about the many different styles of beer, followed by a listing of the brewery’s brands under their style category. Each brand name includes the name of the breweriesindexed in The Essential Reference of Domestic Brewers and Their Bottled Brands (DBBB).

In most cases breweries have selected the style category in which their brands are listed. Note that theBrewers Association recognizes some 35 styles of Ale, 15 styles of Lager, and 9 Special Styles. The DBBB’s style categories are not as specialized as those published by the Brewers Association or those utilized in brewing competitions; however they do represent the broad style differences between brands.

The brand listing also includes the page number where the brand appears as a full brewery portfolio listing (Section VI).

STYLE DESCRIPTIONS

ALES

ABBEY ALES (DUBBEL, TRIPPEL, SINGEL) Monastic, or abbey, ales are an ancient tradition in Belgium, in much the same manner as wine production was once closely associated with monastic life inancient France. Currently very few working monasteries brew beerwithin the order, but many have licensed the production of beersbearing their abbey name to large commercial brewers. These “abbeyales” can vary enormously in specific character, but most are quitestrong in alcohol content, ranging from 6 percent alcohol by volume(ABV) to as high as 10 percent. Generally, abbey ales are labeled aseither “dubbel” or “trippel,” though this is not a convention that isslavishly adhered to. The former typically denotes a relatively lessalcoholic and often darker beer, while the latter can often be lighteror blond in color and have a syrupy, alcoholic mouthfeel that invitessipping, not rapid drinking, The lowest gravity abbey ale in a Belgianbrewer’s range is usually referred to as a “singel,” though it is rarelylabeled as such.

ALT Put simply, an altbier has the smoothness of a classic lager withthe flavors of ale. A more rigorous definition must take history intoaccount. Ale brewing in Germany predates the now predominantlager production. As the lager process spread from Bohemia, somebrewers retained the top-fermenting ale process but adopted the cold maturation associated with lager hence the name “old beer” (alt means old in German). Altbier is associated with Dusseldorf,Munster and Hanover. This style of ale is light compared totraditional English ale. In the United States, some amber ales areactually in the alt style.

AMBER ALES Many North American brewers are now producingales that are identified by the term “Amber Ale.” This is a moremodern, non-traditional style, and many of these beers borrowheavily from the characteristics associated with more classical stylessuch as “Pale Ales” or “Bitters.” Amber ales are light to mediumbodied and can be anywhere from light copper to light brown in hue.Flavorwise, they can vary from generic and quaffable to serious craftbrewed styles with extravagant hoppy aromas and full malt character.Typically, amber ales are quite malty but not heavily caramelized inflavor. For our purposes, amber ales will also include ales commonlyidentified as “Red Ales,” and “American Ales”.

AMERICAN PALE ALE These brews are golden to light copper incolor with a more subtle overall character and lighter body thantypical Pale Ales. English ale fruitiness will probably not be observed. However, the most important qualification is that they are breweddomestically and will have less body, malt and hop character than apale ale from the same brewery.

BELGIAN-STYLE AMBER ALE This is not a classic style, butnonetheless encapsulates various beers of a similar Belgian theme thatdoes not fit into the more classic mold. Expect amber hued, fruityand moderately strong ales (6 percent ABV) with a yeasty character.

BELGIAN-STYLE BLONDE ALE This is not a classic style of Belgian ale, but covers the more commercially minded Belgian alesthat are lighter in color and moderate in body and alcoholic strength.Fruity Belgian yeast character and mild hopping should be expected.

BELGIAN-STYLE GOLDEN ALE Belgian golden ales are pale togolden in color with the lightest possible body for their deceptivelyalcoholic punch, as much as 9 percent alcohol by volume. Typically, such brews undergo three fermentations, the final one being in thebottle, resulting in fine champagne-like carbonation, and a hugerocky white head when they are poured. Often such beers can becellared for six months to a year to gain roundness. These beers areprobably best served chilled to minimize the alcoholic mouthfeel.

STYLE DESCRIPTIONSBELGIAN-STYLE RED ALE These are also known as “soured beers,”their defining character classically coming from having been aged forsome years in well-used large wooden tuns, to allow bacterial actionin the beer and thus impart the sharp “sour” character. Hops do notplay much role in the flavor profile of these beers, but whole cherriescan be macerated with the young beer to produce a cherry flavoredBelgian Red Ale. These styles are almost exclusively linked to oneproducer in northern Belgium, Rodenbach. These ales are among themost distinctive and refreshing to be found anywhere.

BELGIAN-STYLE STRONG ALE Beers listed in this category willgenerally pack a considerably alcoholic punch and should beapproached much like one would a barleywine. Indeed, some ofthem could be considered Belgian-style barleywines, such as thosefrom Brasserie Dubuisson. Expect a fruity Belgian yeast character and a degree of sweetness coupled with a viscous mouthfeel.

BIERE DE GARDE Biere de garde is a Flemish and northern Frenchspecialty ale generally packaged distinctively in 750-mL bottles with a cork. Historically, the style was brewed as a farmhouse specialty inFebruary and March, to be consumed in the summer months whenthe warmer weather didn’t permit brewing. Typically produced with a malt accent, this is a strong (often over 6 percent), yet delicatebottle-conditioned beer. These brews tend to be profoundly aromaticand are an excellent companion to hearty foods.

BROWN ALE The precise definition of English Brown Ale woulddepend on where you are in England. It is nowadays much moreclosely associated with Northern England, specifically Tadcaster andNewcastle, home to Newcastle Brown Ale. These medium-bodiedreddish-brown beers are malt accented with a nutty character, a gentlefruitiness, and low bitterness. Alcohol is moderate, a maximum of 5%ABV. The much less prevalent Southern English style, not seen abroad,is much darker in color, sweeter on the palate, and made in a lighterstyle. English style brown ales of the former type have become verypopular with US brewers, no doubt for the same reason as they tookhold in England, namely their great drinkability.

DRY STOUT Dry stout is closely associated with Ireland in general. These brews tend to be rich and dark with a definitive bitter note anda drying palate feel. They are classically paired with oysters, althoughany Irish Stout drinker will tell you that a pint it is a meal in itself.Draught (draft) Irish Stout is nitrogen-flushed to give it that tell-talewhite creamy head. This process is also effected in cans and bottleswith a nitrogen “widget”.

DUNKEL/DARK WEIZEN These dark wheat beers derive theircharacter from the use of darker malts in the non-wheat ingredients,so that a richer, darker-colored beer can be achieved, along withfuller malt flavors. Dunkel weizens still display the floral, esteryqualities of a pale wiezen. Dark weizens can be produced with orwithout a secondary fermentation in the bottle, with the corollarythat these styles can be yeast sedimented or unsedimented dependingupon the preference of the brewer.

ESB. Bitter is an English specialty, and very much an English term, generally denoting the standard ale — the “session” beer — in anEnglish brewer’s range. They are characterized by a fruity, light tomedium body and an accent on hop aromas more than hop bitters.Colors range from golden to copper. Despite the name they are notparticularly bitter. Indeed, British brewed “bitters” will often be lessbitter than US craft brewed amber ales. A fuller-bodied bitter islabeled as “Extra Special Bitter” (ESB). These weightier versions ofbitter often stand up better to the rigors of travel overseas than thelower gravity standard versions. An important element of faithfulbitters are English yeast cultures used in fermentation. These impart afruity, mild estery character that should be noted in examples of thestyle. Bitters are now widely emulated in North America, sometimeswith domestically grown hops imparting a slightly more assertivecharacter than seen in traditional English bitters.

Anchor Brewing Company1705 Mariposa StreetSan Francisco, CA 94107-2334415-863-8350www.anchorbrewing.com

Anchor Brewing has played a significant role in San Francisco’srich history. Anchor’s seven unique beers – including AnchorSteam® – are all produced in one of the most traditional and hand-some breweries in the world. Each brew is virtually handmadefrom an all-malt mash in our handcrafted copper brewhouse, averitable museum of the simple, traditional breweries of old.

The rich history of Anchor Brewing can be traced all the way backto the Gold Rush, when German brewer Gottlieb Brekle arrived inSan Francisco with his wife Marie and infant son Frederick. Brekleapplied for citizenship in 1854, and his brewing and businessacumen would soon lead to his ownership of a little San Franciscobrewery on Pacific, between Larkin and Hyde, which would oneday become known as Anchor.

Anchor Brewery inherited a long tradition of brewing what hadcome to be known as steam beer, one of the quaint old nicknamesfor beer brewed along the West Coast under primitive conditionsand without ice. Today “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Anchor Brewing remains one of the smallest and most traditionalbreweries in America. Though its beers – especially Anchor SteamBeer – are known throughout the world, they are all stillhandmade in its handsome copper brewhouse in San Francisco.

Liberty AleA special top-fermenting ale yeast is used duringfermentation and is responsible for many of LibertyAle’s subtle flavors and characteristics. Carbonation is produced by an entirely natural process called“bunging,” which produces champagne-like bubbles.Dry-hopping (adding fresh hops to the brew duringaging), imparts a unique aroma to the ale. It is aprocess rarely used in this country today.

Farmer’s Tan – Red AleWe bottled this beer first for a couple of reasons. It isthe most “user friendly,” meaning it isn’t overly bitter, overly sweet, or overly too much of anything. It’s avery easy drinking mild ale. Other craft breweries thatstarted small and are now giant, like Sam Adams andNew Belgium (Fat Tire), all started out with a userfriendly beer like the Farmer’s Tan. “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered with failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits that neither enjoy much nor suffer much becausethey live in the grey twilight that knows not VICTORY nor defeat”

– Theodore Roosevelt

These words inspired us as we endeavored to open the doors ofour brewery and restaurant in 1996. Since then, critics andconsumers have said that our beers are mighty things. We feel thatthey are small ‘victories’ for those who appreciate flavorful beer.
