When Dokk1 opens its doors to the public on Saturday, 20 June, it will be the largest public library in the Nordic countries, representing a new generation of modern, hybrid libraries. The 30,000 square metre building is part of the Urban Mediaspace project, which is transforming the harbour front of Aarhus. The project houses the new library, a citizen service centre, automatic parking for 1,000 cars and new harbour-side public squares. With a budget of over € 280 million, it is the largest construction project by the Municipality of Aarhus in the city’s history.

In 2009, schmidt hammer lassen architects won the competition to design the new Urban Mediaspace project as lead architect in collaboration with Kristine Jensens Landscaping and engineering company Alectia.

The large polygonal building is located at the mouth of the Aarhus River, connecting the city with the port and water. Flanked by forests to the north and south, a recreational belt has been created through which a new light railway will run with a dedicated station at Dokk1. Road traffic will be redirected, so that it has direct access to the large under-ground car park beneath the building. New cycle paths run through the scheme that in-cludes over 450 bicycle parking spaces. Dokk1 will become a new hub and metaphorically the “hinge” that opens up to new experiences in Aarhus city.

A covered urban spaceThe principal idea behind Dokk1 is a transparent covered urban space. Kim Holst Jen-sen, Senior Partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects, explains: “Dokk1 is not simply a building. It is a place for exchanging knowledge and opportunities and a multicultural meeting point that will change people’s perception of the entire city. Dokk1 enhances this special setting with an architecture that creates an exceptional visual connection to the city – both from inside the building and out. Through this, we form an icon for the knowledge society, an icon that supports and stimulates creative collaboration.”

Dokk1 is designed as a polygonal slice that hovers above a glazed building resting on a podium with large sculptural stairs. The stairs fan out to street level and the new harbour promenade surrounding the building. The glass building is designed as an open urban space with 360-degree views of the water, harbour, forest and city. The building has no clear front or back, which is emphasised by the multi-edged top slice that creates the impression of rotation and movement. The facade is made of expanded metal, the scale of the city and harbour is reflected in the design, which twists, breaks and turns. The concept of the façade design is an interaction with the height of the surrounding build-ings and the scale of the port with reference to large elements, such as cranes and ships.

Democratic, open and diverseThe polygonal top floor contains the municipal administration offices along with rental offices. The two open levels of the library are connected by the media ramp, which con-sists of five platforms, each dedicated to an activity: exhibitions, gaming, interactive workshops, reading and events. Combined with the literature and media sections, the media ramp offers a meandering path of activity through the building leading up to the children’s area on the top floor.

“Inside, the open layout creates visual connections between the various functions, and invites the visitor to be inspired by the vast amount of information that inevitably meets them. Openness encourages social interaction and the exchange of information. Dokk1 will become a vibrant space for people of all generations, interests and cultures. Our concept, with interweaving activities and functions, supports this synergy,” concludes Kim Holst Jensen, Senior Partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects.

The development of Dokk1 has in many ways influenced how schmidt hammer lassen designs libraries around the world. One example is in the handling of the public consultation, from which we have learnt large amounts. For Dokk1, this process directly influenced the size of the multi-hall and the design of information in the reception area.

schmidt hammer lassen architects has extensive experience of designing libraries. The most renowned of these being the extension to the Royal Library in Copenhagen, Den-mark, and the RIBA award-winning University of Aberdeen New Library in Scotland. Last year, two Canadian libraries opened in Halifax and Edmonton and in 2018 a new central library in Christchurch, New Zealand, will open. Earlier this year, Dokk1 was awarded a commendation in the category “Cultural Regeneration” at the 2015 MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards.www.shl.dk

Benoy’s First Arts Centre In Jakarta – Ciputra ArtpreneurBenoy, the acclaimed global studio of Architects, Masterplanners, Interior and Graphic Designers, is excited to share an inside look at its first Arts Centre which has opened in Jakarta, Indonesia – Ciputra Artpreneur.

Ciputra Artpreneur is one of Jakarta’s latest and most significant cultural venues, uniquely integrated into the top levels of the Ciputra World Jakarta Mall, a commercial landmark located at the heart of the city’s GoldenTriangle. As a major addition to the Arts for Indonesia, the scheme delivers 14,000m2 of performance and art facilities including a 1,200 seat theatre, flexible and permanent exhibition galleries, a museum and multifunctional rooms.

“Benoy is thrilled to be involved in the development of Ciputra Artpreneur. As we grow throughout the dynamic Southeast Asia region, we are excited to have one of Indonesia’s leading arts and culture venues as part of our portfolio,” said Global Design Director Simon Bee.

The highlight of Benoy’s Interior Design for the Arts Centre is the state-of-the-art Ciputra Theatre. As the first international-standard venue in Indonesia, it is capable of hosting large touring productions from around the world including opera, symphony and ballet.

A proscenium style auditorium with seating over two levels, the space accommodates 865 seats at stalls level and 365 in the balcony.

Jakarta is an emerging global city and Benoy has captured this essence by creating a truly unique visual for the space. Designed with a striking geometric interior, the Theatre is brought to life with faceted walls and ceiling detailing. The distinctive form was created with soft cell panels covered by stretch fabric and further accentuated with illuminated strips.

“Increasingly, purely commercial mixed-use developments are demanding more innovative additions to their programmes to attract and retain visitors. By adding new and varied cultural experiences like Ciputra Artpreneur, a new ‘Place’ is established and becomes that much more exciting for the consumer,” continued Simon.

Benoy was also behind the Interior Design of the Main Gallery. Flexible interchanging walls allow the space to accommodate either major exhibitions or a series of smaller exhibitions simultaneously. Taking advantage of

the views over Jakarta, a tall glass wall runs along one side offering glimpses of the city centre. At each end of the gallery space, two striking spiral staircases help lead guests to the Theatre above.

Developer Ciputra has long promoted local art and, in particular, that of the renowned Indonesian artistHerman Gunawan. Throughout the interiors and Benoy’s design, Gunawan’s highly expressive and richly colourful style has been thoughtfully integrated, further ensuring the venue becomes a truly integral part of Jakarta’s cultural landscape.

With Ciputra Artpreneur, Benoy expands its growing portfolio in Indonesia. The firm has a number of ongoing projects currently on the drawing board across the major sectors including Interior Design for Thamrin Nine, Jakarta; Architecture Design for W Hotel Jakarta; and Mixed-Use Developments in Pluit City and Bali.www.benoy.com

Shedding Light On LEDsMarcus Brodin, commercial director at Future Energy Solutions (FES), outlines the five key considerations when selecting LED lighting.

According to the Carbon Trust, lighting accounts for one sixth of the UK’s total electricity usage. If the government is going to meet its stated targets for carbon reduction – at least 34 per cent by 2020 and a minimum of 80 per cent by 2050 when compared to 1990 levels –

the nation’s 1.8 million commercial buildings will need to drastically reduce their energy consumption.

To the rescueWith rising utility bills and growing legislative pressure for companies to reduce their carbon footprints, it is not surprising that a technology that can save money and lower carbon footprints is turning heads.

Light emitting diode (LED) lighting has created a seismic change not seen since gas lamp manufacturers witnessed the introduction of the carbon filament lamp. So much so that the global LED lighting market will be worth $25.4bn in 2013, according to a Digitimes Research Special Report.

Understanding the changes being brought about by LED light sources means that the entire value chain now has to engage with a re-education on the basics of light generation and application. Not all LED lighting solutions are the same and in order to get the maximum possible benefit from this technology, it is important to be able to differentiate what’s on offer and make the right purchasing decisions.

The five most important questions to consider when choosing an LED solution are as follows:

Page 11: The Essential Building Product Review - August 2015 - Issue 3

11

enquire online at www.ebpr.co.uk/card

How much should I spend?Perhaps the biggest barrier to widespread adoption of LED lighting over recent years is its price. While production costs have fallen dramatically in the last few years, some solutions are now considerably cheaper than others.

When it comes to LED lighting the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ should be kept in mind and the pitfalls of selecting a poor quality product must be avoided at all costs. Premature product failure, poor lumen output, low lm/W and inefficient design are just some of the factors that can compromise a lighting scheme. In addition, the knock on effect of having to replace products can quickly have a negative effect on any return on investment (ROI).

There is no definitive answer as to how much should be spent but it's a fair assumption that if you buy cheap, the chances are that you will have to buy twice.

Where is it from and how important is a warranty? The vast majority of low cost and poor quality LED lighting products originate in China and although the country is beginning to address this issue, buyers should still beware. According to Lux Research, China’s LED lighting market will more than double to $7.4bn in 2017, meaning that a significant number of the estimated 5,000 manufacturers there are undercutting their rivals by using low quality components.

Unfortunately, if something goes wrong with a Chinese product, the cost of sending it back from the UK is likely to be prohibitive. Conversely, a product that is manufactured, sold and under warranty in the UK will mean a swifter resolution if there’s a problem.

Will it do what it says it will do?When specifying a product the chosen manufacturer should always be asked to provide full photometric and electrical data, as well as conformance certificates to ensure that the product will provide you with the full benefits of your investment.

Although this information can be useful in terms of calculating ROI, be sure to establish whether the tests were carried out in-house or by a reputable third party testing organisation. Results from the latter are always preferable.

Which accreditations should it have?A lack of recognised and enforced standards has resulted in a dramatic variation in the quality of products currently on the market.

However, LED luminaires sold on the European market should, by law, carry the CE mark, which is a statement by the manufacturer that the product complies with all the relevant EU legislation, including product safety standards and directives.

What level of energy savings and carbon reductions should I expect? The answer to this question depends on two factors – the quality of the products and how they are configured and used.

One key piece of advice is to validate the output of a luminaire. A 20W bulb might use 25W, which means that any energy usage calculations could be incorrect by as much as 20 per cent. Also, a product that needs replacing after 50,000 hours will result in a higher total cost of ownership than one that last for 90,000, so always factor this in and be realistic.

The energy savings can be highly impressive. For example, FES recently finished Phase 1 of a project for National Car Parks (NCP), which, when completed, will have involved the installation of over 65,000 energy efficient LED luminaires in 149 multi-storey car parks. The use of LED lighting will generate energy savings of over 65 per cent and the effect on the environment will also be significant.

NCP’s CO2 emissions will be reduced by 11,000 tonnes per annum and mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) will be lowered by 248lbs over the same period – this is the equivalent of 16 acres of forest being saved and 11 cars being removed from the road.

Pushing The Boundaries With Light Steel Frame

Light steel frame (LSF) has been revolutionising the construction industry for years, however recent technological advances in Building Information Modelling, and lean manufacturing means that LSF now offers an unparalleled freedom to construct faster and more accurately. The combination of strength, durability and precision engineering ensure light steel frame offers broad parameters to explore innovative solutions and optimise value engineering. There are many ways in which light steel frame is perfectly positioned to meet the objectives.

Target 1: Faster DeliveryTime is a critical factor in construction – as every project manager well knows. That is one of the reasons why light steel frame has become the preferred construction method for forward-thinking property designers and builders. Offsite construction projects can be delivered in up to half the time compared to traditional construction, delivering radically reduced build times, leading to less time onsite and ultimately, a faster return on investment.

Target 2: Lower EmissionsA major benefit is a minimised impact on the environment, with national targets for housebuilding, carbon emission reductions and the push for ‘zero carbon’ buildings – light gauge steel is perfectly positioned to play a crucial role in meeting and delivering these targets. Steel is noted for its longevity and ability to be multicycled – providing no onsite waste and thus enabling for a more sustainable future.

Target 3: Reduce CostsLight steel frame provides a lower cost option, whilst

still maintaining a superior quality. Cost savings are made due to the speed of construction, the frame is installed very quickly once onsite and resource efficiencies are also made due to the reduced site labour requirement.Factory controlled manufacturing conditions eradicate the risk of onsite variability, delivering safer construction and improved health and safety onsite – all reducing the risk of unexpected costs during the build. Furthermore, the longevity of light steel frame minimises costs in the long term. Steel is unaffected by shrinkage unlike materials such as timber, resulting in dramatically reduced repair costs down the line.Companies such as EOS Facades have been driving light gauge steel within modern offsite manufactured solutions, providing the industry with quality products through precision manufacturing whilst delivering accurate results on time and on budget, resulting in high performance construction that is energy efficient and supports greater construction targets. This year, EOS Facades are offering all-inclusive fixed price packages that are supplied with proprietary brackets and fixings required. Plus they are offering all Double Studs/Opening Jambs and DSL Lintels dispatched from the factory pre-assembled. This is a flexible service and should the client require the product to arrive unassembled, EOS will pre-punch in the factory, ghost assemble and supply, together with all the necessary screws and special drill bits, for assembly and installation onsite. www.eos-facades.co.uk/contact-us/

As the government continues to set ambitious goals for the construction industry, there is a growing demand to construct faster, more sustainably and at a lower cost. But how can this be achieved?

Glazing ‘The Waitrose Way’ In Chester

The VS-1 by GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain is a new type of curtain walling which is ideal for achieving aesthetically superior buildings featuring large vertical spans of glass or meeting complex designs. It is a mullion only system in which the glass wall visually ‘floats’ as the façade of a new high-profile superstore clearly demonstrates.

The new Waitrose supermarket at Boughton retail centre in Chester signifies one of the biggest investments the retailer has made in a single store. The 29,000 sq. ft store was built by contractors Barr Construction, with local materials and using alternative construction techniques to minimise carbon emissions. Benefitting from the GLASSOLUTIONS VS-1 mullion-only curtain walling system, this vibrant and distinctive building allows plenty of natural light into the store.

The building’s stunning design includes large, continuous vertical expanses of curtain walling which are achieved through the VS-1’s unique design. The 10.5m mullion spans were achieved without the need for mid-point lateral load restraint from horizontal mid-span steel. 3.5m high glass panes are solely supported by the structurally robust mullions allowing uninterrupted vertical sightlines in this transom-less system.

After the first design concepts were approved, it was thought that a bespoke system might have been the only option to deliver the architect’s vision. GLASSOLUTIONS, however, was able to demonstrate otherwise with the VS-1 system, which is available in a range of sizes, and

reduce façade lead times and costs significantly. The store’s bronze rainscreen cladding is matched sympathetically by the exterior real bronze fins carried on the VS1 system and the bronze PPC mullions internally. The store was designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Key sustainability dimensions include 75% of the energy needed for the supermarket being provided by an on-site wood burning biomass plant.

The VS-1 system contributed to sustainable design in a more fundamental way thanks to its structural integrity. With the VS-1 façade designed and installed to comfortably accommodate larger than normal building movements, the whole building could be constructed using a lighter steel framework, which also delivered financial savings for the client.

GLASSOLUTIONS utilised SGG COOL-LITE® SKN165ii glass to help achieve an optimum internal environment which balances natural lighting with solar control and superior thermal performance. Complementing the VS-1 façade, GLASSOLUTIONS was also appointed to install glazing for the north and south entrance lobbies using the SPIDERGLASS® bolted glazing system.

This ensured consistency with the rest of the building and meant Barr Construction could benefit from a single sub-contractor for all glazed façade elements.www.glassolutions.co.uk

Crittall Solution For Listed Lidl Development

Successful supermarket chain, Lidl, faced an unusual challenge with its plans to develop a store on the Lower Bristol Road in Bath. Occupying the chosen site was an empty and vandalised single storey industrial building circa 1966.Lidl invariably plumps for new-build stores but, having split the acquisition of the site with a property developer, the new owners’ demolition plans were thwarted by an unexpected Grade II listing. The reason for English Heritage’s attention was the mode of construction of the otherwise unremarkable structure. The 57,000 sq ft. building was the first example in the UK of the use of the Mero Space Frame. This German system, incorporating solid steel tubes of standard length connected by spherical metal nodes, was designed to support the roof with the minimum number of columns.Birmingham-based Lapworth Partnership was engaged to meet the challenge and worked with Bath and North East Somerset Council’s conservation officer and English Heritage in the South West region to arrive at an acceptable refurbishment and upgrade of the building. In order to replicate the slenderness of the original aluminium fenestration a steel window system was selected for all the continuous high-level glazing. The company supplied banks of coupled W20 and MW40 section fixed frames, double glazed in long runs. These were interspersed with bespoke insulated pressings both internally and externally to allow a link between

upper and lower level windows, roof and internal services. Another element was a narrow metal fascia running at roof level around the building. This was recreated in steel together with its specially designed fixing system to replace the original aluminium and asbestos sill. A further aspect of the original design is a series of large louvred panels that originally had been attached to internal plant but

which were an important visual element of the external elevation. Crittall reproduced these metal louvres. www.crittall-windows.co.uk

Specifying Hardwood Timber Entrance Doors – What Should You Know?

Choosing the right hardwood for a front door is tricky because you don’t have to just think about the colours and what suits the exterior or interior of the house, you also have to consider the outlook, weathering, performance and cost. Materials used on the outside of the building like the windows, cladding, rendering, zinc, copper and stone are also closely related to the door choice.

The question of durability is always crucial. For instance, with American Black Walnut it is recommended that an overhang is in situ, since the characteristics of this wood mean it is more likely to stain black if it isn’t maintained properly. And let’s face it, not all of us will keep up with the maintenance of our doors as much as we’d like to. Another concern is extreme weathering. Is your door facing the sea, south facing, or prone to getting a lot of sun and rain? Some hardwoods are better suited to these extreme conditions. European Oak and Iroko, for instance, perform very well and can withstand some tough weathering.

It can be essential to know whether the house has cladding – which narrows the decision down slightly but still isn’t straightforward. It’s quite popular to have Western Red Cedar cladding, but then you have to think about whether or not you are going to allow it to silver. Treated WRC cladding will match a Western Red Cedar door as long as it is finished in the same way; however, WRC is a soft hardwood and therefore can mark easily when used for a front door.

The closest match to it is Iroko and therefore a good choice because of its weathering qualities and undoubtedly its cost. You may however, not wish to match at all, and are quite happy to have greying cladding with European Oak or even Wenge. This is also a very popular way to provide contrast and attract attention to an entrance.

Furthermore, the style of house and colour of brick or render can influence the choice of wood to a large degree. The more red a brick the less likely you would match it to Iroko, for instance, which is quite red itself. White or cream render lends itself to nearly any colour wood but then on the other hand if the windows are a different colour like grey or green you’d need to consider this when choosing the wood too. A very popular colour-way at the moment is white render with dark grey windows and a European Oak door.

Often people are afraid of hardwood because of the maintenance involved. This is certainly valid but if you know the facts it’s easier to make a decision. For such a natural product, wood is very versatile and you’d be surprised at its ability to blend in with various colours, textures, and finishes and withstand weathering. Understanding security (despite the fact that you may not always specify this detail) is imperative.

The main idea is to delay someone getting into a house for as long as possible - the longer they spend trying then it’s more likely they will be caught in the act. Even though studies show that burglars are most likely to enter through a window (depending on where the house is), making sure the front door looks impenetrable is key.

This information applies to nearly all the external doors in a house and not just the front door. As long as the product installed meets one or more of these requirements, you should be as safe as possible. Obviously having a burglar alarm is essential too, but most of the time, the burglar would need to get in first before the alarm goes off. If noise isn’t an issue and the burglar goes straight for a window, then the alarm would probably be more effective.www.urbanfront.co.uk

Launch Of Schueco Parametric Façade System Offers Architects New Level Of Design Freedom

The launch of Schueco’s Parametric Façade System by sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK Ltd, offers architects a new level of dynamic design freedom. For the first time ever, geometrically complicated 3D façades can be designed as straightforward system solutions whose cost can be calculated with the certainty of a series product. Like all Schueco systems, the Parametric Façade is highly insulated, with Uf values up to 0.5 W/m2K, and surface elements that can be transparent or opaque. Sunlight and shading, guided views and daylight optimisation can all be employed as active design factors. The system can also accommodate BIPV panels for solar energy generation.

Central to the Schueco Parametric solution is the continuous, closed digital process chain that operates in all phases of design, planning and fabrication. The result is that commonly encountered interface problems are eliminated and a uniform, consistent data model for every individual involved in the process is guaranteed.

Schueco parametric planning tools include a library of ‘intelligent’ façade modules for CAD programs that can be freely combined and incorporated into a parametric façade during the design phase.

Their use allows complex shapes to be progressively simplified, establishing rules and connections between individual design elements that can lead to extraordinary reductions in detailing time: for example, instead of the current norm of 24 hours per unit, use of SchüCAD Inventor slashes the per-unit time to a scarcely believable 8 minutes.

With the Parametric System, Schueco has made customer-specific, individualised mass production for free-form façades an affordable reality, combining in one package the economic benefits of industrial series production with clients’ desire for individual and exclusive products and solutions.

The system has won Schueco an Honourable Mention in the Red Dot Awards: Product Design 2015.

Wrightstyle And An Aluminium Anniversary

Wrightstyle is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced steel and aluminium glazing systems, supplying fire and blast resistant systems worldwide. Tim Kempster, Wrightstyle’s MD takes a look at bomb blast safety – and Wrightstyle’s proven system.

If it was a wedding anniversary, a traditional gift – somewhat unromantic - is aluminium, which makes some sense because we supply glazing systems in both aluminium and steel.

However, for us, it’s an important anniversary because it was ten years ago that we first introduced a market-leading glazing system that could withstand the pressure impact of a lorry bomb. There were more than a few doubters who said that a glazing system couldn’t resist such an immense blast pressure. But we developed our structurally-glazed system, and independently tested it against the equivalent of 500 kilos of TNT, acknowledged to be the explosive impact of a lorry bomb, and roughly ten times the size of a car bomb.

Known in the industry for developing glazing solutions for challenging specifications, Wrightstyle was initially approached with a set of criteria for the Central Security and Co-ordination Command Centre for the Asian Games hosted in Doha, Qatar in December 2006.

Initially designed to protect and prevent any disruption to the critical operations of the Games’ co-ordination, the USD $31million building also had to be designed with the intention to hand it over to the Qatar military on completion of the Asian Games.

The strict criteria from the project architects and consultants required the majority of the external glazing to mitigate the effects of a medium size lorry bomb and a close range car bomb.

Other requirements were for the glazing to have solar control, be thermally performing, but to have an external sight line of less than 20mm and internal sightline of less than 60mm to maximise vision to the building exterior – project requirements for which there was no tested system available on the market.

Our solution was achieved through a high-specification structural glazing technique that bonds the glass to the framing support system so that, in an explosion, the components work together to safely absorb the thermal shock of the explosion. The successful tests were carried out independently by Advantica Limited at a specialist site within RAF Spadeadam, Northumberland.

The simulated lorry bomb attack was immediately followed by a simulated car bomb attack (100 kilos of TNT). The lorry bomb was detonated 75 metres from the test rig and the car bomb was detonated at a distance of 20 metres, producing a higher loading on the façade.

The Wrightstyle system set a new benchmark for a glazing system to mitigate against blast attack and, with terrorism much in the news, has now been supplied to a number of projects in the United States, UK, and the MENA and Asia-Pacific regions. It is a worldwide success, protecting high-risk buildings and those adjacent to them. We’ve also been pushing the boundaries – for example, to make our advanced system look no different from non-protected glazing systems.

Such an achievement deserves more than a lump of aluminium but, being also being a supplier of aluminium glazing systems, we could make good use of it.To receive Wrightstyle’s regular newsletter, simply subscribe at www.wrightstyle.co.uk

Probably The Best Saltless Water Softener In The World

People have been copying Aquatiere’s saltless water softeners over the past few years and have achieved limited success. Unfortunately the customer who expects ‘soft water’ was often disappointed by the fact that the softener did not perform as they expected.

Aquatiere was the first UK company to use pre-crystalisation resins such as TAC and WAC to stop scale forming in pipework and equipment and market this as a saltless water softener.

4 years of R&D later Aquatiere has now produced a product that meets customers expectations. The new Pureau range of saltless water softeners actually produce soft water using ion exchange. Resins – Simply softer water! www.aquatiere.co.uk

Timóleon Underfloor Heating - The Last Word In Glamping

Little Coombe Farm, down on the coast of Devon, is considered to offer the most comfortable and glamorous form of camping – or Glamping – possible: with two pairs of cedar clad yurts providing every creature comfort in a woodland setting overlooking a beautiful river valley and just in case the West Country weather isn’t warm enough, there’s even Timóleon’s underfloor heating to keep the glampers comfortable.

Yew Yurt and Pheasant Yurt each comprise an eight metre diameter main structure containing the master bedroom suite, complete with shower room, toilet and spacious lounge/kitchen/diner, leading onto a four metre diameter satellite with the second bedroom as well as a wet room and across the dumbbell shaped floorplan, Timóleon’s LowBoard system – part of the manufacturer’s well proven range - has been installed to deliver controllable warmth within accommodation where radiators would look as out of place as a staircase.

While the construction of the LowBoard panels helps keep overall floor depth to a minimum, Timóleon’s Technical Design Service created an installation layout to respect the circular floor plan of the Yurts, able to deliver maximum efficiency from minimum pipe lengths. The seven pipe runs totalling 360 metres in length are connected back to one of Timóleon’s Axios compact manifolds which measures just 615 x 415 x 100 mm; and that is able to deliver a flow of 310llitres per hour.

The system is designed to have a flow temperature of 550 C and a return temperature of 450 C; optimizing boiler performance. The LowBoard system has been laid over a suspended timber floor construction that has insulation within the void depth, while 22 mm thick wooden flooring covers the pipework that still allows good thermal transmission.

A holiday magazine offered this description of the luxury experience available at the Little Coombe Farm yurts, located near Dittisham: “Think woodland walks, hooting owls and back to nature relaxation – and combine with the most comfortable place you can think of – offering everything from dishwasher and Wi-Fi to en-suite shower and underfloor heating. So you’ll be toasty whatever the weather is doing outside.”

Back in the more conventional built environment, Timóleon’s underfloor range can offer a full selection of solutions for installing across solid or suspended floor constructions on multiple storeys and suitable for combining with any heat source from biomass or conventional boilers to heat pumps or district heating schemes. www.hydronik.co.uk

Future Energy Solutions Embarks On New Led Lighting Project For Britannia Parking

Future Energy Solutions (FES), the leading energy performance solutions provider, has begun a new contract to supply, install and maintain light emitting diode (LED) lighting technology for Britannia Parking, one of the UK’s leading car park management companies.

The company operates all types of parking including purpose built multi-storey, underground and surface car parks, together with temporary sites awaiting development. Having heard positive reports about the work FES had carried out within the car parking sector, Brian Parker, Managing Director at Britannia Parking contacted the company.

He said. ‘Along with four other organisations, we invited FES to tender for a contract to replace the inefficient T8 fluorescent lamps across our car parks estate with LED lighting. Having viewed their recommendations, I was impressed with the company’s consistent message and established track record and awarded it the contract in early 2015, with a view to starting work as our Bristol Harbourside car park, as the first site to upgrade to LED lighting’

A popular location due to its diverse mix of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as fitness and entertainment venues, Bristol Harbourside has one of the city’s biggest and busiest car parks. The project was a straightforward point-for-point LED lighting upgrade, which had environmental enhancements and increased security as priorities, along with the energy savings that the technology could provide.

As no occupancy sensors were installed, the lighting has to be on at all times, something that was considered a security advantage.

Britannia recognised that the existing lighting was in need of refurbishment due to a significant number of luminaires no longer working. This meant that the savings were on average less than the usual 60 per cent FES strive for with car parking operators. With this in mind, FES still managed to achieve a significant energy reduction across all floors – including first floor where a significant number of lights were not working. With the first floor figures excluded, the project provided remarkable energy savings of 50.6 per cent.

As part of a bespoke energy performance contract (EPC), Britannia Parking has not had to provide any upfront capital expenditure to finance the project, as it is being entirely funded by FES. A 6 year contract will allow FES to be remunerated through the cost reduction in energy bills that Britannia Parking will experience and its energy prices are hedged over the life of the contract, reducing its exposure to price hikes.

Another massive benefit is that all the products FES specifies and installs are performance guaranteed and maintained for the life of the contract, therefore taking away the hassle of maintenance and reducing the company’s operational cost. www.feslighting.co.uk

Trend’s New Room View Sensor And Display Creates The Perfect Climate Control Solution

Trend, the international manufacturer and supplier of state-of-the-art Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), has built on the success of its innovative range of Wallbus mounted sensors and displays with the introduction of Room View (RV). Designed for optimum flexibility and ease of use, the RV’s colour touchscreen and clean, modern graphics provide a state-of-the-art interface that enhances occupant experience.

The top of the range RV complements Trend’s existing Room Display (RD) and Room Sensor (RS) solutions, maintaining similar design features that contribute to a family feel across all three devices. The implementation of a common icon set throughout the range allows occupants to intuitively relate to models and options and instinctively feel in control of room elements.

Perfect for use in offices, meeting rooms, schools, hospitals and hotels, the RV displays information about occupation status, as well as a wide range of environmental conditions including temperature, relative

humidity, CO2 and outside air temperature. It also allows basic level control of fan speed, setpoints, lighting, heating, blinds and windows to suit the desired comfort conditions of the occupant. Whether orientated in landscape or portrait, the backlit-displayed graphics present the room data clearly so the occupant can effortlessly adjust the room elements.

The features and benefits of this device offer advantages for all types of customers. Architects, for example, do not want wall devices to impose, distract or conflict with the overall look of a room and therefore the RV has a balanced and unobtrusive appearance, allowing the unit to complement but not detract from interior design themes. In addition, the backlit display’s colour can also be altered to suit the aesthetics of the room or building.

For M&E consultants, the RV’s high-level functionality will be of particular interest and the sensing, display and user input options ensure that control and adjustment can be easily achieved. They can also feel confident that the devices will function as expected throughout system design, installation, commissioning and use.

Heat Pumps Help Reduce Fuel Bills For Hodnet Tenants

When Shropshire Housing Group was looking to tackle fuel poverty throughout its housing stock, the choice of Ecodan renewable heat pumps helped ensure a smooth transition for tenants. As a rural housing association, Shropshire Housing has 1300 off-gas properties out of a total stock of around four and a half thousand, with the bulk of these being 1950s-built properties.

“Back in 2009 when the first consultations about the renewable heating incentive were published we thought it would be a way to help us to afford renewable technologies, which can seem quite expensive to install from a landlord's point of view on our limited budgets,” explained Bernard Quinn, Investment Manager for the Group.

Bernard and his team brought in the specialist installer the Dodd Group and started a series of tenant forums to discuss the new heating systems and help educate residents into how to get the best out of their systems. Heating engineers from the Dodd Group met tenants at the local community hall to discuss the installations and resolve any issues that may have arisen.

The residents were also encouraged to get together to talk amongst themselves about the positives of the installation and also work out the best tariffs and what is involved in changing tariffs. Tenants have had experience of the heat pumps throughout two winters now and Bernard explained that Shropshire Housing went with the Ecodan system because it was one of the best systems on the market with simple controls for tenants.

The Group’s housing management staff have also received training on the heat pumps as well, and both the Dodd Group and sheltered housing staff have been on hand to help residents if they have had any difficulties in using the heating systems. www.ecodan.co.uk

Carbon Monoxide – And How A Window Could Help Save Your Life

Although it can occur naturally, in this context carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Fuels such as gas, oil or wood all contain carbon. Normally, when they are burned with a sufficient supply of oxygen, the carbon oxidises and becomes carbon dioxide (C02). However, if there is insufficient oxygen, it is possible for the oxidation process to be incomplete and the result is carbon monoxide (CO).

It is highly recommended that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. There are many battery and mains-products devices on the market. Many are stand-alone devices that emit an alarm signal when CO is detected. However, it is also possible to have a detector wired into a ‘smart’ home automation system.

Roto’s electromechanical drive systems enable windows to be opened, closed and locked remotely. The drive units can be connected to a ‘smart’ system so that windows open or close in response to conditions, for example humidity, rain – or carbon monoxide. Therefore, you could have a system that not only sets off an alarm and warns you of carbon monoxide, but which also opens windows immediately in order to provide ventilation. The Roto E-Tec Drive is the ideal product for automated operation of Tilt&Turn and Tilt-Only windows.

It is suitable for Timber, Aluminium and PVC windows and the drive unit is completely concealed within the window frame. When used with the Roto Designo concealed Tilt&Turn hardware, it creates a window on which there are no visible hinges or drive components. The new RotoComfort i8 roof window can also be connected to a smart automation system in exactly the same way. Featuring a completely concealed drive, the RotoComfort i8 opens significantly more quickly than conventional electric roof windows. With a maximum opening angle of 45 degrees, the window provides a good level of immediate ventilation. www.roto-frank.co.uk

SE Controls Gets Switched On With Bristol’s Electricity House Contract

A key contract to provide an advanced smoke ventilation system to Crest Nicholson Homes’ redevelopment of Bristol’s iconic Electricity House building, has been awarded to leading smoke and natural ventilation systems company, SE Controls.Originally designed by acclaimed architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s, the six-storey Grade II listed building is being converted into 85 luxury city centre apartments, while ensuring that many of the original design features are reinstated to enhance its art deco style.Electricity House’s main atrium is at the heart of the SE Controls solution, as the smoke ventilation system is designed to vent smoke from the atrium in the event of a fire to ensure escape routes are kept clear. To achieve this, SE Controls is designing, installing and commissioning the system, which comprises 37 SHEVTEC® automatically controlled louvres that are manufactured and tested in accordance with BS EN 12101: 2. The SHEVTEC® louvres also incorporate ‘fall protection’ to increase safety, as well as using IP rated external motors, which are essential to allow easy access for future maintenance. In addition, 21 low level air inlet louvres and linear door actuators also form part of the system, all of which are controlled by a series of OS2 control panels with integral battery back up and fully compliant with the relevant sections of the BS EN 12101 standard. www.secontrols.com

Johnson & Starley's Warm Air Heating And Ventilation Solution For Historic Apartment Renovation

Johnson & Starley’s WarmCair warm air heating, Aquastar hot water storage and Home ‘n Dry ventilation technology have been combined to maximum effect in a spectacularly renovated historic apartment in Penarth. Brian and Marilyn Fisher selected Johnson & Starley products on professional recommendation and are delighted with the results.

Albert Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Penarth, was built in 1907 and its schoolroom was destroyed by bombing in World War Two. The church was later converted into a multi-purpose building, still including a place of worship, but with most of it given over to local community services.

Since being used as a community centre it had fallen into disrepair and in 2012 it was converted into eight luxury apartments, including two spacious duplexes. They were all designed to

utilise as effectively as possible all the available space afforded by the original large church with its vaulted ceiling. Renovation features include attic style storage space and glass walled decks for split level loft style accommodation, whilst much of the original church's heritage, original design and architectural features have also been retained. These include the original rafters and coving, along with the bell tower – now a wine cellar with roof top terrace.

Brian and Marilyn Fisher's open plan apartment features living room, kitchen and two bedrooms on an upper level of the renovated church with a dressing room and airing cupboard - later transformed to house the new Johnson & Starley Warmcair heater and Aquastar water storage cylinder - leading off a mezzanine floor.Originally, electric underfloor heating had been installed to heat the apartment, but it had soon

Page 33: The Essential Building Product Review - August 2015 - Issue 3

33

enquire online at www.ebpr.co.uk/card

become apparent that this was inadequate to provide sufficient heating for the living space with its very high ceilings.

Fuel bills were ranging from £600-£700 a month, yet even with the addition of portable calor gas and electric fan heaters, the desired warmth levels were still not being achieved.

Looking for an alternative more effective and more energy efficient approach, a British Gas engineer suggested to the Fishers that a Johnson & Starley warm air heating system with provision of domestic hot water could prove a solution. Following a site visit and professional advice from Independent Heating System Designer Barry Williamson, a specification for a heating system, including detailed heat loss calculations, was drawn up. The solution was based on the installation of a Johnson & Starley WarmCair C20DW high efficiency combined warm air condensing heater with domestic hot water.

Barry comments: “The apartment presented some challenges in terms of designing and installing a warm air heating system that could do the job. It's an unusually shaped apartment with high ceilings and a delightful internal décor. This needed to be considered carefully when designing the installation of the required ductwork to distribute warmed air in the most effective way.” To maintain the highly attractive look of the apartment, ducting was concealed around the apartment behind the ceiling in the bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms and en-suite, with discreet outlet grills in each room and two at floor level in the main living area. Extract vents remove the warm air that has risen to the wood panelled ceiling level and duct it back down to ground level for energy saving recirculation. The thermostat is in the main living room, in the centre of the wall below the balcony, so that the temperature reading gives a more accurate figure of room temperature.

Although the underfloor heating has been retained, it is no longer required. Only the fully Building Regulations Part L compliant, the WarmCair C20DW is now used. It has the added advantage of domestic hot water provision rather than having to rely upon a standard tank with an immersion heater. With a thermal efficiency up to 98% and its 20kW output, the WarmCair C20DW is ideal for the size of the apartment and fulfils all of Mr & Mrs Fisher's requirements.

For extra energy efficiency it is fully modulating and includes a condensate pump as standard as well as the Cleanflow electronic air filtration option. “The WarmCair is a new generation of warm air heating, ideal for this type of heritage project. It performs at least as well as a modern gas fired wet heating system, but without the unsightly clutter of radiators. Furthermore with warm air heating there is no heat loss compared with that which is encountered when hot water is circulated through radiators to heat the house,” says Barry Williamson.

A 180 litre Aquastar hot water storage cylinder has been installed. It is made from high-grade stainless steel

and retains heat using a 50mm layer of insulation. The capacity is more than enough to store the hot water generated by the WarmCair and required by the Fishers. It also features a 3kW backup immersion heater.

The complete installation was undertaken by Robin Hefter of Shackleton Wintle and it took 10 working days to complete due to the scale and challenge of the project. This included drilling the solid three feet thick church walls. Said Robin Heffter Managing Director of Shackleton-Wintle “It was an interesting job with many technical challenges, but the results made everything worthwhile. Mr & Mrs Fisher were for the first time in 4 years warm this winter and are extremely happy with their warm and comfortable fast acting heating system.”

Since installation, the results have been all that Mr. Mrs Fisher could have hoped for. Previously the underfloor heating had to remain on all the time to generate warmth within the property, whereas now Mr & Mrs Fisher put on the heating on arrival and the effect is almost immediate thanks to the fast warm up times. In terms of domestic hot water (DHW), previously the immersion heater would need to be on for 24 hours a day, but now the WarmCair is only turned on for 2-3 hours a day and there is always hot water - even when the family comes to stay. Overall, bills for heating and hot water have been reduced by 40%.

The main entrance hall, at the bottom of the bell tower, was suffering from mould and damp, evidenced by peeling paint and the aroma. To combat this, Johnson & Starley's Home 'n Dry unit has been installed. It is situated in the coat cupboard just adjacent to the stair well. A hole cut through the wall and a diffuser fitted with the ducting, takes in warm air from the main dwelling to be used by the unit.

The Home 'n Dry is a whole-house, positive input ventilation system that introduces a constant flow of dry air that reduces relative humidity. The system creates a positive pressure forcing the stale air to escape through the fabric of the building. The fan speed of its low energy DC fan can be adjusted and running costs can be as little as 1p per day.

It is achieving good results and the damp is being alleviated. Further remedial works to the brickwork outside will also be undertaken, but the Home 'n Dry has already made a massive difference to the inside with the damp/mould receding and the smell almost gone.

Mrs Fisher said: “ I love the heating now and there is never any need to have it set higher than level six on the thermostat, 21 – 24 ºC. Another advantage is that with WarmCair warm air heating, there are no unsightly pipes or radiators to spoil the look of our lovely apartment. “

Aluprof Clothes New Matalan HQBuilt on the former Petrolite site at Knowsley Industrial Park, Matalans’ new headquarters makes extensive use of Aluprofs’ range of aluminium framed glazing systems. Design by Manchester based Fletcher-Rae Architects, Aluprofs' Humberside fabricator, CSI, won the contract to fabricate and install the external facade. The resulting three-storey, 132,000 sq ft office block, looks imposing on its new fifteen acre site and uses colour effectively to increase its presence.

The main facades of the offices consist of Aluprof’s 50mm ‘MBSR50N’ curtain walling with the reception atrium completed in the capless version of the same system the ‘MBSR50N-Efekt capless’. This system includes new high performance seals complete with further insulation within the system provided by HPVC strips. The glazing shade variations to main curtain walling areas are achieved by a mixture of Coolite ST150, Grey tinted and Mid Grey ceramic spandrels.

Generally the doors are constructed from Aluprofs' ‘MB70’ system, with the entrance side pass doors fabricated using ‘MB86’. This system enables glass to be bonded to the actual face of the door leaf to give a flush glazed effect.

The new offices are situated over three floors and achieve a BREEAM rating of 'very good’ as the project incorporates sustainable technologies for power, heating, and cooling. There is a future opportunity to link into a proposed on-site energy generation facility, located in a separate building, which forms part of a second phase development.

Aluprof UK head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof exacting standards.

A stunning, contemporary kitchen with far-reaching views of the rolling northern Welsh countryside is the subject of this case study. The vast, light-filled space, which is part of a brand new home, uses an inspired palette of neutral colours, amongst which Caesarstone’s Oyster (ref 4030) is key.

Partnered with kitchen cabinetry in high gloss ivory and a limestone floor, Oyster is the ideal choice for both the kitchen’s work surfaces and its ‘make-a-statement’ island unit. The latter is an unusual, teardrop shape and doubles up as a workstation and informal eating area.

Templated and cut from a single slab of Oyster, the delicately mottled surface of the quartz adds a semblance of texture and brings cabinetry, flooring and surfaces together beautifully. Oyster is made from 93% natural materials.

Completely non-porous and largely stain and scratch resistant, the surface ticks all the boxes of a busy kitchen that combines cooking and eating with relaxing and entertaining. Once cut and installed, Classico Collection colours such as Oyster require no sealing and certainly no specialist treatment. In fact, warm, soapy water should be all that is ever needed.

Oyster (4030) is from Caesarstone’s best-selling Classico Collection. It is available in three thicknesses – 13mm, 20mm and 30mm, standard slab dimensions measure 3060mm x 1440mm. Caesarstone Classico Collection colours are all made from 93% natural materials. Caesarstone offers 4 times the flexural strength of granite – and can be formed and moulded.

They are non-porous, largely stain and scratch resistant and are guaranteed for 15 years. The Classico Collection offers 32 colours; further colour and texture options are available from the new Supernatural Collection, which recreates the beauty and tactility of marble. Caesarstone is not just for kitchens – it can also be used for bathroom and other interior applications.www.caesarstone.co.uk

Dudley may not be a location that would spring to mind when making a list of the world’s most remarkable architectural landmarks but it has some hidden treasures so precious that they were granted World Monuments Fund status in 2009, which places them in impressive company alongside iconic heritage sites including Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal!

The structures in question are the Tecton buildings at Dudley Zoological Gardens (DZG). There are 12 of them in total, each designed by Bethold Lubetkin and his Tecton practice. They are the world's largest single collection of Tecton buildings and some of the few remaining UK examples of this innovative and influential architectural movement from the 1930s and 1940s.

Explains recently retired DZG CEO Peter Suddock who led the programme: “Tecton was a radical architectural movement that used pre-stressed concrete to create striking curved structures. When Dudley Zoological Gardens was first planned and built, this radical, ultra-modern approach to design and construction enabled the architects to work with the challenging slopes and

underground limestone caverns on the site to create a visitor attraction full of visual appeal that looked completely new and exciting.”

It’s hard to imagine the enormous visual impact that the Tecton structures must have had on zoo goers when DZG first opened to the public in 1937, with their futuristic forms contrasting with the site’s 11th century castle. Over the years, trends in zoo best practice have meant that some of the structures are no longer in use as viewing enclosures.

Time has also taken its toll on the wear and tear too. The DZG Tectons were put on the World Monuments Fund’s watch list of world class buildings threatened

by neglect, demolition or disaster in 2010. As a result, a lottery-funded project is now underway to preserve and protect the structures for future generations.Among the Grade I and Grade II* Tecton structures that have so far been refurbished at Dudley Zoological Gardens, under the watchful eye of English Heritage, are the entrance canopy and ticket kiosks, concession stands, and the impressive ‘Bear Ravine’ which was once used to allow zoo visitors to view the bears from above at close range. One of the main priorities of the refurbishment programme is to protect the structures from water and environmental damage due to rainfall, which led to the specification of a cold liquid-applied waterproofing system from Kemper System.

Explains Stuart Hicks from Kemper System: “The Kemperol waterproofing products from Kemper System can be applied to the exact contours of the existing prepared concrete substrates in a single process. They cure to form a monolithic membrane that is chemically bonded to the structure and provide an ideal base for the decorative and slip resistant quartz aggregates chosen to match the look of the original structures. As a result, the Kemperol system and aggregates used for the entrance canopy, kiosks and the Bear Ravine provide the least obtrusive solution to ensuring long-term protection for the structures without any significant changes to their appearance.”

The first project of the refurbishment programme to be delivered was the entrance canopy which consists of five horizontal ‘S’ shapes, each overlapping the one before to create a wave like ripple that announces the word ‘ZOO’ in big white letters below.

Stuart continues: “The entrance canopy is an iconic feature of the zoo but the curved shapes catch rainfall, which makes the structure vulnerable to standing water and the damage it can cause. Being cold liquid applied, Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing system was ideal for following the exact contours of each curve.”

41

The Kemperol system was also used to waterproof the roofs of the four ticket kiosks that are located beneath the entrance canopy, which were originally constructed without any waterproofing protection at all. This was because the structural concrete was perceived to be robust enough to withstand weather conditions, especially given the shelter afforded to the kiosks by the entrance canopy.

However, the risk of leaks to buildings of such architectural significance, which are built from concrete that is now almost 80 years old, prompted DZG to incorporate the ticket kiosks into the roofing programme. Specialist contractor, Dent Roofing, was tasked with carrying out this aspect of the project, installing the Kemperol system to two kiosks at a time in a phased programme to enable the Zoo to keep the remaining two kiosks operational and thereby avoid any business interruption during the works.

Each kiosk has a flat roof with a single outlet in the centre for drainage. Dent Roofing began the installation by applying Kempertec EP5 primer to the bare prepared substrate followed by the Kemperol resin. The resin saturates a reinforcement fleece in a single wet-on-wet process and cures to form a seamless, monolithic membrane that remain permanently elastic and is UV stable.

Dent Roofing has also been responsible for waterproofing the Bear Ravine; a much larger and more complex structure which has not been used as an animal enclosure for several years. The design of the Bear Ravine includes a central bear pit with a raised walkway and viewing platform that also forms a partial roof to a largely open building. This is accessed by a set of concrete stairs. There is also a viewing pier that extends out at a right angle beneath the main walkway.

For this structure, a quartz aggregate was scattered onto the wet primer to create a key for the waterproofing membrane and Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free system was used. The Kemperol 2K-PUR was applied using the same methodology with resin, followed by 200g fleece and more resin, all installed in a single wet-on-wet process.

Julian Dent from Dent Roofing explains: “The curved lines that make the Bear Ravine such an iconic structure also make it a challenging waterproofing project. Fortunately, the liquid Kemperol system is ideal for following the individual contours of the concrete surface and we simply used smaller brushes to apply the resin to awkward corners.”

Once the waterproofing system to the walkway and staircases of the Bear Ravine was complete, the Dent Roofing team applied a quartz aggregate laid into the coating to create a non-slip surface. The team then moved on to the Bear Ravine’s concession stand. They started by mixing a paste of primer and resin which was then applied around the outside edge of the roof to ensure that there was no ‘run on’ of wet resin from the roof to the walls of the concession stand when the main roof area was being waterproofed. The Kemperol 2K-PUR system was then applied in the conventional resin-fleece-resin sequence with decorative quartz aggregate used to provide the finished look and complete the project.

Julian continues: “Kemperol 2K-PUR provides a high level of waterproofing performance, and is BBA-Accredited with a 25-year service life, ensuring that the Bear Ravine is protected and preserved for the next generation just as effectively as the Tecton structures at the Zoo’s entrance.”www.kempersystem.co.uk

CLT – Reaching New Horizons

Engineered timber has made significant advances over the past decade. Cross laminated timber (CLT) in particular, has been taken to places never before predicted. There has been growing global support for the prioritisation of CLT – particularly in the development of medium rise buildings – which has led to monumental changes in the London skyline and other cities around the world.

The use of solid wood in the UK is rising - circa 320 solid timber projects have been completed so far, with about 160 of them being delivered in the past four years. The London Borough of Hackney introduced a ‘Timber First’ strategy in 2012. The environmentally conscious area stated that it wanted to create a ‘presumption in favour’ of using wood because of its advantages in terms of embodied carbon.

This has led to some of the most impressive, ground-breaking timber buildings to be constructed within this area. Banyan Wharf is one of the most important residential buildings in London. Situated in Hackney, this 10 storey build is the tallest timber tower in the UK. Due to Hackney’s commitment to creating more sustainable buildings, engineered timber technology was the preferred option for the structural elements.

CLT wall and floor panels up to 200mm thick and weighing up to four tonnes each, were delivered to the site with all openings pre-cut, allowing them to be lifted straight into position, which was a huge advantage when working on such a restricted site.

Cross laminated timber provides five key benefits – speed, strength, sustainability, safety and cost certainty, all helping to deliver enhanced performance. CLT is the ideal sustainable solutions as it has minimal impact on the environment and delivers exceptional airtightness which maximises energy efficiency.

Speed of construction is achieved by offsite precision engineering for onsite installation. This, in turn, makes project planning less weather dependant, more predictable and therefore reduces programme risk. Rapid large panel construction allows internal works to be carried out earlier, making the critical path operate more smoothly for follow on trades. This improves construction and project delivery time, and offers a faster return on investment.

There will be a full technical case study presentation on Banyan Wharf at this year’s Solid Wood Solutions, taking place at the Inmarsat Conference Centre, London on 16 September and hosting over 250 delegates from around the world. With sustainability and offsite construction high on the construction industry agenda - Solid Wood Solutions is the essential event to hear first-hand from industry leaders and innovators. Wood may be one of the world's oldest building materials, but it is now also one of the most advanced.

This one day conference and exhibition will showcase the very best in engineered timber by creating a platform for 18 of the industry's innovators to present some of the most prestigious projects from across the UK and Europe. As engineered timber is one of the fastest growing modern methods of construction, this event is designed to inspire through innovation.

Tickets are just £125 + VAT. Book now to avoid disappointment: http://solidwoodsolutions.co.uk/book

6261 Eurobrick Celebrates 25 Years In Business

Brick and stone slip cladding specialist Eurobrick reaches a milestone in 2015 with 25 years in business. Despite two major recessions, the company has seen year on year growth since day one with 2014 being its best year to date.

The Bristol-based company is now the country’s largest stockist of brick slips, introducing its innovative patented insulated brick slip cladding system to the UK in 1990. Eurobrick’s directors, John Mayes and Tony Hornsby, introduced the first comprehensively designed X-Clad brick cladding system to the market. The team convinced a reluctant market of its benefits, recognising the potential of X-Clad as a reliable alternative to traditional construction methods.

The industry’s previous experience with cladding had not always been positive, but the team at Eurobrick worked to turn the perception around. The company’s high quality products coupled with excellent customer service have built a solid reputation in the trade. A major step towards this came in 1993, when X-Clad, the original insulated system, achieved third party certification, having faced rigorous testing and scrutiny of an independent body.

Since then, the company has developed further brick slip systems, which all have certification from the British Board of Agrément (BBA). Over the years, the market for brick slip cladding has steadily increased. At each stage, Eurobrick has met demand with superior customer service and innovative new systems such as I-Clad, for interiors, and P-Clad, that can be installed on buildings over 18 metres high.

Managing director John Mayes looks forward to a bright future, saying: “Building methods are constantly evolving in response to external pressures, such as the need for greater speed and efficiency and the skills and materials shortages. It’s products like our cladding systems that provide an answer. “We will continue to work hard to meet the challenges and are confident there is a long term place in the industry for our cladding and brick slips. Ultimately, customer service is at the heart of our success. In 2010, we became an ISO 9001 accredited company, a reflection of our continuing commitment to customers.” For more information on Eurobrick and its range of brick and stone slip products, please visit www.eurobrick.co.uk

This seminar is the second in Trespa’s CPD series and follows on from the “Principles of Rainscreen” where Trespa brings an understanding of how ventilated rainscreen works, including the benefits, critical success and factors leading to confidence in specification.www.trespa.com

Fakro Conservation Windows For Low Roofline Installation With over 250 size and glazing options, FAKRO offers the largest standard range of roof windows in conservation style and routinely manufactures to bespoke requirements. In conservation areas, planners favour windows positioned low within the roofline so FAKRO’s choice of 3 installation depths and scope to fit either on rafters or battens is a major benefit. No other manufacturer does this and for slates, installing windows 3cm lower than the standard installation depth using an ELJ flashing gives

them a neat and unobtrusive appearance. For deeply profiled tiles too raising the installation depth by 3cm is similarly effective.www.fakro.co.uk

Hauraton Channels Used As Perimeter Drainage At Brooke Church Of England School

Located in Brooke village about six miles South of Norwich, The Brooke Church of England Primary School is a brick building surrounded by an asphalted playground which tended to flood when there was heavy rain.

As part of a number of measures designed to reduce future flood risk it was decided that the existing drainage needed to be upgraded. The Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings was specified by NPS Group of Norwich, and used to provide perimeter drainage right around the school building.

This continues 104 metre channel run not only drained the asphalt playground it prevented standing water reaching the walls and acted as a drain for roof downpipes. The FIBRETEC® grating design helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating and important consideration for the Brooke project. The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled PE-PP. The channel for the Brooke project has an intake cross section of 92 cm2. For full Case Study go to www.drainage-projects.co.uk

While the standard Duplo WC frame is suitable for most bathroom spaces, designers working in height restricted and small bathroom spaces can now benefit from the Duplo WC L, a low-height frame designed to be installed under a window, and the Duplo WC Compact, which maximises on limited space.

Simple to fit and with easy access to the cistern for maintenance, the Duplo installation systems have been designed to withstand heavy use, particularly beneficial for use in public spaces, or high-use environments such as hotels, restaurants, offices, hospitals and airports. Able to hold a weight of up to 400kg, the frame’s adjustable feet also enable the sanitaryware to be installed at different heights, to maximise user comfort.

The Duplo installation systems from Roca includes a dual flush cistern, which is insulated to keep noise levels to a minimum. Suitable for low pressure areas, the cisterns have WRAS approval pending, with flush volumes of 6/3litres and 4.5/3litres helping to reduce water wastage in all commercial situations. Compatible with Roca’s complete range of wall-hung WC pans, the Duplo installation systems can be combined with a variety of different push plates in a range of styles for the perfect finishing touch. www.uk.roca.com

All Quiet In The Tower

The historic Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen is the noisy heart of Danish democracy and politics. Its106 metre tall tower is Copenhagen's highest point and a dramatic part of the city's beautiful skyline. The top has now become one of the most popular and quiet places to eat, thanks to the clever use of acoustic panels on its 11 metre high ceiling. During renovation, the Government supported the idea of architects Henrik Levinsen and Dorthe Andersen to create for the public Restaurant Tårnet in the large tower room. The project faced many technical challenges not only to minimise disruption to Parliament below but also to improve acoustics and reverberation from the hard walls and noise from the diners. The solution was to install 130 sqm of special Troldtekt 60 x 60cm panels in natural grey with coarse structure on the ceiling. Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe. Made with 100% natural wood fibres, their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. They are used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings.Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left natural or painted in virtually any RAL colour. Troldtekt sustainability has also been recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept and earns gold on 4 out of 5 criteria in the Cradle to Cradle certification version 3.1.  This international certification has been achieved because the panels do not contain hazardous substances and can be recycled. For samples and comprehensive technical information tel 01978 664255 or visit www.troldtekt.co.uk

Faithful Replication Of Historic Wall Tiles Ensures Seamless Restoration Of Grade 2 College Building

Craven Dunnill Jackfield has successfully completed the replacement and restoration of hand glazed, historic wall tiles for the Grade 2, former East Ham College. The project involved the origination of accurate models for 39 unique designs and the formulation of several metal oxide glazes, which were fired and applied seamlessly to match the original tiles of the 1903 building.

Rick Mather Architects lead the refurbishment project, in consultation with English Heritage. Jackfield manufactured the tiles and worked in close collaboration with specialist tiling and terrazzo contractor WB Simpson & Son. The newly manufactured wall tiles are such an exact match to the originals and so expertly installed that the difference in age of around 110 years is indiscernible to the untrained eye.

The Edwardian Grade 2 listed building was home to the Old Technical College and forms part of the larger East Ham Civic Campus. It is now the new Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre.

The official foundation stone of the original building was laid in 1903 and is located in the entrance porch, surrounded by a decorative backdrop of brown glazed ceramic tiles. Many of the tiles in the outer porch, the main vestibule, stairs and ground floor corridors had been extensively damaged over the life of the building. Whilst it was possible to salvage some of the original tiles by cleaning, many others were missing or so badly damaged that they needed to be replaced.

The level of manufacturing complexity on the project was significant. Approaching 1400 tiles were required across 39 unique designs, of which 813 had to be manufactured from scratch, without any existing moulds. These included decorative, embossed border tiles, two

sizes of panel frame profiles, skirting borders, 6 x 4 inch and 6 x 3 inch tiles in plain and round edge, and external curved skirting profiles. Fitting new tiles within existing ornately decorated tiles was an intricate job and required the reproduction tiles to be accurate in both size and thickness.

Unable to take moulds from the original tiles, the team at Craven Dunnill Jackfield expertly re-modelled all the tile profiles, faithfully copying the remaining originals. The replacement tiles were then manufactured in biscuit before being hand-dipped in specially formulated, metal oxide glazes: green and brown. The glaze recipe used was similar to that of the original tiles.

Adrian Blundell, Production Director at Craven Dunnill Jackfield led the project, working closely with the tile contractor to ensure the project was successfully completed. Blundell attended the East Ham College of Technology back in 1984, taking a foundation art course in art and design, and clearly remembers the ornately decorated, ceramic tiled pillars which take centre stage in the main vestibule.

He comments: “When you are dealing with a historic site, you never know what issues are going to arise. Our prime concern with this project was achieving the exact match with the remaining original tiles, which had aged over time. The team at Jackfield has a wealth of knowledge and expertise and previous work on restoration projects at the Gaiety Theatre, Isle of Man and Baron Court Underground was invaluable.”

The multi million pound refurbishment of the building was completed in late 2014. www.cravendunnill-jackfield.co.uk

Baker Street Building Transformed By Bauder Green Roof

82 Baker Street located in the Marylebone district of Westminster in London is a commercial building that has recently undergone an extensive amount of renovation work. Central to the new developments was the refurbishment of the building’s flat roof, which included the creation of a green roof terrace area with impressive views across the West End. The original flat roof covering had surpassed its life expectancy and begun experiencing water ingress so urgently needed attention.

The building consists of a number of roof areas on a variety of different pitches and floors totalling over 1,400m2 in all. The roof was shrouded with unsightly equipment and redundant air conditioning units that no longer served a purpose and detracted from the appearance of the building so therefore needed to be removed as part of the required works. Prior to undertaking the necessary remedial work robust wind uplift calculations and weight loadings were performed by flat roof manufacturer Bauder to ensure that the new roof could resist the weather conditions it is likely to experience and bear the additional weight of the green roof system.

All of the original waterproofing on the main roof areas was removed before being replaced with Bauder’s premium reinforced bitumen system, which included a highly efficient tapered insulation for superior thermal

performance and improved drainage falls, ensuring the roof achieved the required average 0.16 U-value.

On the new ballasted terrace roof area, located on the building’s 5th floor, 400m2 of Bauder’s bituminous green roof system was installed with wildflower blanket around the roof perimeter delivering an instant carpet of vegetation.

A major challenge on this project was transporting the green roof products to the terrace roof as Baker Street is incredibly busy and the only way to move the heavy substrate and wildflower blanket was using a crane. It was also vital that the team worked in unison with all the other trades on site so that works progressed as expected without hindering one another.

Despite the challenges faced throughout the project all roofing works were completed on time and to budget, providing the client with an innovative refurbished roof that boasts extraordinary environmental credentials.

This project is undeniably an exceptional example of how modern roofing technology can help rejuvenate a historical site. www.bauder.co.uk

Could The Altitude Clause In BS5534 Leave Some Contractors High And Dry? Better To Choose Your Underlay Very Carefully…

BS5534:2014 highlights the role of a roofing underlay’s wind uplift resistance in protecting against stormy weather and preventing costly damage. The considerations it outlines (based on a combination of meteorological, geographical and building physics data) not only establish the minimum standards in the new code of practice, but are also essential to long term peace of mind.

However, while much is being made by various underlay manufacturers and suppliers of achieving BS5534:2014 compliance, the picture may not be quite so straightforward – especially when you consider that a key part of the revised standard refers to altitudes not greater than 100m – and that large areas of the UK are at often surprising heights above sea level.

For example, one might expect parts of Cumbria, Wales and Scotland to exceed that benchmark… but how about Milton Keynes? Or swathes of Essex, Surrey, Nottinghamshire and Northern Ireland? Could this factor expose some unsuspecting developers and contractors to unnecessary risk and make them vulnerable to falling short of the code – and therefore potentially liable in any insurance claims?

With world weather looking increasingly unpredictable (and litigation on the rise) anyone specifying a membrane would do well to ensure that, like their project’s roof, everything is covered by a membrane with proven reliability and compliance with all conditions, altitude included.

All underlays are required to clearly state, in literature, certification and on roll labels, the declared wind uplift of the material, and on this basis, the end user can determine the suitability of the material for the site’s location.

BS5534 splits the UK (including Northern Ireland) into 5 zones, and to be “fully compliant” at a batten gauge of 345mm, the following test parameters must be met:• 1,600 N/M2 when a well sealed ceiling is present• 1,900 N/m2 when no ceiling or no well sealed

ceiling is present• 2,350 N/M2 when no ceiling or no well sealed

ceiling is present and a permanent dominant opening is present on an external face of the building.

But, is it that simple? The new standard also requires compliance with the following conditions:• Ridge height not greater than 15m• Roof pitch between 12.5° and 75°• Site altitude not greater than 100m • No significant site topography

Clearly, comprehensively meeting all the requirements of BS5534:2014 could prove challenging for contractors also looking for a reliable, easy-install, trouble-free solution. Fortunately, however, there are products which allow unrestricted use anywhere in the UK, in all building characteristics and under all site conditions. Unsurprisingly these come from a name well-known for over 25 years for proven quality, durability and service: DuPont™ Tyvek®.

All three BBA approved underlays in the group: DuPont™ Tyvek® Supro, DuPont™ Tyvek® Supro Plus (with integral tape) and DuPont™ Tyvek® Enercor roof offer unrestricted application when tested in accordance with BS5534:2014 – and with no counter battens required in any zone. This allows contractors to be confident that they in are full compliance, not only with the code, but with all the weathering and thermal performance expectations of an advanced breather membrane.

Jet Cox Offers A ‘Baker’s Dozen’ Of Automatic Smoke Vents

Britain’s most famous fire – which engulfed the capital in 1666 – reportedly started in a bakers shop in Pudding Lane and resulted in the first regulations on building construction to try and prevent future catastrophes. By coincidence the selection of “Smoke and Heat Exhaust Vent Systems” or smoke vents offered by Jet Cox Limited extends to 13 sizes all of which are fully compliant with the latest CE EN 1 2102-2 Certification. In fact the Jet Cox FireJet 165 24V/48V has been developed to provide automatic smoke extract in the event of any type of conflagration and thereby create a smoke free layer above the floor by removing both smoke particle and any potentially life threatening combustion gases. The FireJet 165 models can be activated by a dedicated smoke alarm or a remote third party fire detection system and are fully compatible with any modern building management system. Crucially the FireJet 165 is available with either a 24 volt or 48 volt control panel with battery back-up in case of mains power failure and there is the further option of manual override using switches close to the unit. Such capabilities are crucially important as smoke and noxious fumes are the main cause of fatalities in a fire disorientating people and asphyxiating them in minutes. Installing adequate smoke ventilation not only saves lives by facilitating the evacuation, but also makes it easier for the emergency services to gain access, to assist and tackle the fire. This has the additional benefit of reducing damage to the building fabric or property, both from the flames, and smoke damage, which rapidly spreads far beyond the seat of the blaze. www.jet-cox.co.uk

York NHS Trust Headquarters Roof Refurbished Without Disruption To Staff

Early this year it was discovered that the rock asphalt roof and balcony of the York NHS Trust headquarters was in desperate need of repair. An initial survey by Sika Liquid Plastics assessed the condition of the failing roof, which was allowing water ingress and damaging the building below. It was decided that the sensitive nature of the hospital site, combined with working on a roof and balcony of an occupied building, required the use of a waterproofing product that would cause as little disturbance as possible.

It was essential that the product chosen would enable fast installation without the risks associated with hot works. Not only were speed and safety key – a low odour solution was required so as not to disrupt those working in the offices. Decothane Ultra, a low odour liquid applied roofing membrane from Sika Liquid Plastics, was specified for the refurbishment.

Group Tegula, a Sika Liquid Plastics Quality Assured Contractor, was able to quickly install the liquid membrane over the top of the existing roof covering, even around the more difficult areas. This was thanks to the liquid application and unique formulation of Decothane Ultra, which allowed the use of Glass Fibre Matting around plant details. Group Tegula also installed a Sika Liquid Plastics Versirail on the roof from Latchways, the edge protection system specialists, to ensure any subsequent inspection or maintenance on the roof could be conducted safely by staff or contractors.

Alongside the roof refurbishment, the communal balcony area, accessible via French doors from the office, needed to be waterproofed. As it would be used daily by staff for breaks and meetings, it was important that it looked aesthetically pleasing. As Decothane Ultra is liquid applied, it allowed for a seamless and attractive finish, which was well received by the client and staff alike. Group Tegula also installed a bespoke handrail around the edge of the balcony to finish the job. www.liquidplastics.co.uk

Trespa Enhances London’s Grosvenor Waterside

Grosvenor Waterside is a St James Group development in Central London consisting of six buildings adjacent to Chelsea Bridge. Moore House is the final building within the overall masterplan defining the entrance to the scheme and connecting the traditional streetscape of Ebury Bridge Road with the contemporary architectural style of the development.

Trespa® Meteon® panels have been used extensively in this development, which is being transformed from its recent industrial use into a new public urban quarter. Moore House is a nine-storey mixed-use development comprising 149 luxury residential apartments of varying sizes.

The building consists of three distinct interlocking volumes; the volumes increase in height and decrease in visual density to create a unique facade. The central volume of the building is in the shape of a cube with vertical glass fins linking continuous balconies.

On the ground floor there is retail and commercial office space. EPR Architects redesigned the elevations working within the massing constraints of a previous planning consent. The use of Trespa® Meteon® panels gave the architects the perfect medium to express their

architectural designs and was used extensively in a variety of colours, Amber, Garnet Red, Urban Grey and Aluminium Grey to provide a unique aesthetic appearance. Trespa® Meteon® is an extremely versatile panel that can be combined easily with other building materials to create stunning visual effects.

The material’s decorative surface also has excellent UV-resistance and colour stability which means it will not fade or discolour over time. At the same time, the product provides solidity and sturdiness, holding bolts, screws and other mechanical fixings.

The development is now complete and has been a focal point at Grosvenor Waterside for residents and visitors. The use of Trespa® Meteon® as a ventilated rainscreen cladding facade has not only enhanced the visual impact of the development but also its thermal performance.www.trespa.com

Portakabin Group Helps To Meet Increase In Demand For School Places In London With 6th Contract For Barking And Dagenham

The Portakabin Group has been awarded its sixth contract for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council. Working as principal contractor for delivery partner Thames Partnership for Learning, the Portakabin Group is now constructing the second phase of a primary school facility in a new £5.3 million contract.

Barking and Dagenham has one of the fastest-growing school-age populations in the UK and this latest project will help to address the increasing pressure on education provision in the area. It has been predicted that in the region of 8,000 new primary and secondary school places will need to be provided in the Borough over the next five years.

Designed by Surface to Air Architects, the new scheme will expand the current facility by accommodating around 100 additional primary, secondary and special needs children. Initially both buildings will be used by a secondary free school before being converted into a 5FE (five form entry) primary school on the City Farm Schools campus.

A Yorkon off-site solution is being used to deliver the building to a tight cost plan and a challenging programme in time for the start of the new academic year. This approach will reduce time on site to just six months, is ensuring much less disruption to teaching during construction despite the site constraints, and will give the local authority greater certainty of delivery on time and on budget.

According to Simon Ambler, Director of the Portakabin Group, “By using a Yorkon off-site

solution, the building will be delivered more efficiently, to a shorter timescale ready for the new academic year, enabling the local authority to respond to the fast-changing pattern of education demand in the Borough.”

The Yorkon approach is sufficiently flexible to allow both phases to be used initially for secondary education provision, before being easily reconfigured to meet the needs of a 5FE primary school. The Portakabin Group’s contract includes a full turn-key service, comprising design, planning, off-site building manufacture, ground works, fitting out, and provision of a multi-use games area, football pitch, and additional play areas. A multi-purpose hall will also be constructed as part of the package and will link the new building to the first phase.

The building will benefit from a pre-installed Yorkon concrete floor which minimises work on site and will provide enhanced acoustics and a high quality, robust finish. The scheme will be finished in an abstract arrangement of colours from a palette of blue, anthracite grey, earthy golden and metal green to give it a strong identity and to complement the earlier project.

Facilities in the new two-storey building will include 16 classrooms, library and ICT suite, two specialist teaching rooms, dining room, new school entrance and reception lobby, and a PE store room. For further information about Yorkon off-site building solutions for primary and secondary education, call 0845 2000 123, email [email protected] or visit www.yorkon.info

Kalwall Is A Good Sport

The Kalwall translucent system plays an important part in the design of many sports buildings. A good example is the new SportsDock at the University of East London’s Docklands Campus. Here, the system not only diffuses natural daylight but also creates perfect playing conditions by eliminating glare and shadows. This means that there is no need for blinds, curtains or external shading. With increased natural daylight and resistance to solar gain, energy-consuming artificial lighting and air-conditioning costs can be dramatically reduced. The SportsDock was designed by Ball Hall in conjunction with Clague Architects to create a sense of clarity and legibility. Of particular note are the three dance studios exposed in the east elevation, which consist of double height spaces that are illuminated after dark, allowing passersby to see the

silhouettes of activity within and creating a spectacular ‘animated’ effect. The facility played a major role as the training headquarters for Team USA in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Now local residents can use the £21million sports facility complete with fitness centre, strength and conditioning room, two outdoor 3G five-a-side football pitches, indoor arenas, dance studios and sports café.Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. The company has recently had all three of its ISO certifications successfully renewed for three years: OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO 9001 Quality Management certification. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall

The Best Buildings ‘Barr None’ For Soft Drinks Manufacturing Facility

AG Barr, the soft drinks business responsible for well-known brands such as the iconic IRN-BRU, Rubicon exotic juice drinks, Strathmore spring water, Tizer and the distribution of Rockstar energy drinks in the UK, has chosen two buildings from Portakabin Hire to provide highly flexible office space inside its new manufacturing facility in Milton Keynes.

The company has now hired its second Portakabin Solus building to provide flexible office and meeting space on the shop floor for the next three years. Both buildings were delivered in a month or less from contract award, and each has been ‘wrapped’ in the company’s statement drinks branding to fit in with the manufacturing facility’s high-tech appearance. The first building features the distinctive ‘Rockstar’ branding and the second is a ‘Rubicon’ drinks vinyl wrap. The resulting facilities are striking and lively additions to the production centre.

Commenting on the company’s requirement, Tim Stacey, Factory Manager at AG Barr Milton Keynes, said, “We had a need for office and meeting space on the shop floor but because the manufacturing facility is still very new and growing, it is impossible to predict what our office requirements will be in three or four years’ time. We wanted an office solution that we could extend or move around if we need to and which can be adapted to meet the company’s changing needs. A Portakabin Hire building gives us far more flexibility.”

Both buildings were installed inside the distribution centre in a challenging operation and without the use of any vehicles. Portakabin Solus buildings are available to hire or buy and provide bright, self-contained executive office space for up to six

people. Each building is delivered complete with data connection points, heating and lighting, and large windows to maximise natural light. It is available in a range of sizes up to 36m2 and can be linked to create larger complexes or two-storey facilities.

Vinyl wraps are low maintenance finishes which are now available for Portakabin modular and portable buildings. They are simple to install and remove, and can totally transform the appearance of a building. Strong corporate branding, company logos and eye-catching graphics designed for maximum impact can turn a facility for short-term use into a valuable market asset or statement.

Murals and more subtle colour schemes can be used to blend an interim scheme into its surrounding environment and can help secure planning approval in environmentally-sensitive locations.

Applications for interim modular buildings for manufacturing companies are diverse and include office accommodation, meeting rooms, security buildings, canteens, training suites, and shower and changing rooms. The facilities can be supplied and installed just days from receipt of order complete with fire and alarm systems, access ramps and furnishings, and can remain in use for as long as required.

Buildings provided on hire can also be funded from revenue streams, reducing capital costs and outlay. For further information about interim buildings, visit www.portanews.co.uk, email [email protected] or call 0845 401 0010.

Marmox Thermoblock Specified For Affordable Passivhaus Project

A development of 25 new properties for a leading social housing provider, located close to Minehead on the Bristol Channel, is making use of Thermoblock from Marmox in order to meet the very stringent airtightness and insulation standards demanded under PassivHaus guidelines. The project for Hastoe Housing, is seeing Halsall Construction Limited build a total of 20 houses to full PassivHaus requirements, while a further five also offer excellent energy performance. Thermoblock is available in several widths to suit different wall constructions and features miniature columns of concrete encapsulated within high performance insulation. They can be used at upper floor levels and other locations as well as around the perimeter to the oversite. The Site Agent for Halsall Construction Limited, John Gray, commented: “The PassivHaus properties feature the use of 150 mm wide Celcon aircrete blocks up to floor level then the course of Marmox Thermoblocks and another single course of blocks above, which ultimately carries the timber frame. The outside of the buildings then features either local stone or render outside a further 200 mm thickness of Kingspan Kooltherm insulation. The Thermoblock is employed to help achieve the very low U-value, while the airtightness figure required is 0.6 (m3/m2hr)”. The Project Architect at GCP, Mr Colin Powell, added: “Thermoblock is being used to break the thermal bridge between the sub-structure blockwork and the superstructure above; achieving a psi value of 0.007 W/mK”. Each course of Thermoblock was bedded on mortar and jointed with Marmox Multibond, the manufacturer’s versatile and easy to apply one-part sealant and adhesive. www.marmox.co.uk

A Tale Of Two Parks

Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey selected Redland’s Fenland Pantile roof tiles for two large scale housing projects in Norfolk to help ensure the developments blend in with the local vernacular. Redland developed the Fenland Pantile for the purpose of catering to the South East and East Anglican markets that favour a particular aesthetic when it comes to roofs. The classic single pantile shape provides a modern interlocking concrete format that guarantees robust, weathertight performance in all conditions.www.redland.co.uk

neaco Balconies Maximise Views And Sunlight

neaco’s glass panelled Juliet and bespoke balconies are helping to maximise the benefits of a unique outlook at a prestigious apartment development in Canterbury, where residents can enjoy views of the action at Kent’s County Cricket Ground.

Designed by Clague Architects and built by Cardy Construction, Lime Tree House is a collection of two-bedroom luxury apartments combining striking contemporary architecture with flexible living space. Set in an outstanding position next to the historic venue, now known as the Spitfire Ground, the properties are perfectly placed to enjoy county and international cricket, including the recent match between Kent CCC and the Australian team visiting as part of the 2015 Ashes tour.

With their predominance of glass providing unobstructed views out, neaco’s Juliet balconies and balcony balustrade systems were an ideal choice for these high-end homes which also include bespoke designer kitchens, luxury bathroom suites and under-floor heating.

neaco’s UK business development manager, Peter Melia, said: “Maximum visibility is one of the defining features of our balconies. The use of glass panels and minimal or no stanchions has plenty of benefits besides the obvious transparency of the view – it also makes the most of natural light with maximum sunlight penetration and the minimalist aesthetic compares favourably in style to the cage-like appearance of heavily railed or meshed infills. That’s certainly a feature in keeping with the contemporary, high-end design of Lime Tree House.”www.neaco.co.uk

Advanced Protection For Magna Carta

One of the most famous historical documents in Britain, if not the western world, is being protected by extinguishing and fire alarm panels from Advanced with installation by Reflex Systems. Sealed by King John at Runnymede in 1215, Magna Carta is celebrating its 800th anniversary (the actual anniversary is 15 June). It is the first example of an absolute monarch surrendering some of his powers, the beginning of a process that led eventually to our current system of government and the prototype for democratic government all over the world.

The version protected by Advanced is particularly precious being one of only four surviving original 1215 Magna Carta sealed by King John and is kept in a special vault at Lincoln Castle, itself a Scheduled Monument, alongside Magna Carta’s sister document The Charter of the Forest (1217).Lincoln Castle, one of the best preserved in England was constructed in the 11th Century by William the Conqueror, and is one of only two to have two mottes.

The fire and suppression systems installed by long-time Advanced partner Reflex Systems incorporate two MxPro 5 panels in the main heritage centre and the former Victorian prison building, which closed in 1878. Advanced’s ultra-dependable ExGo extinguishant release system has been installed in the Magna Carta vault.

ExGo has been developed specifically for sensitive and strategic assets such as server rooms, historic and cultural attractions and control rooms. It has been installed in high-profile buildings across the globe, including the Romanian National Library and along oil pipelines in Sudan. MxPro is the industry-leading multiprotocol fire system.

Offering real choice and flexibility, it includes two panels ranges, the EN54-2&4 approved MxPro 4 and EN54-2,4&13 approved MxPro 5. It offers four protocols, Apollo, Argus, Hochiki and Nittan and a completely open installer network that benefits from free training and technical support.

John Pye, Managing Director of Reflex Systems said: “Lincoln Castle required an open protocol fire system and we knew that Advanced panels could deliver maximum reassurance and long term reliability. Having worked with Advanced in the past, we knew that the equipment would be of the highest quality for such a historic building plus the system offers the flexibility to meet future requirements.”

MxPro 5 panels can be used in single loop, single panel format or easily configured into high speed, 200 panel networks covering huge areas and tens of thousands of field devices. In total, one MxPro 5 four-loop panel was installed in the main prison building and one MxPro 5 two-loop panel was installed in the heritage centre.

ExGo is suitable for almost all single-flooding area applications and includes a range of control options and devices. It is approved to EN54 parts 2, 4 and 13 and EN12094-1 and is among the first systems to combine these with EN12094 Part 3 in a single solution. EN12094-3 relates to the integrated manual release on the front of the panel. ExGo can be integrated into Advanced’s Axis and MxPro fire panels, or any third party fire system.

A spokesperson for Lincoln Castle commented: “We’re very pleased with the Advanced systems installed by Reflex. As the Castle is a listed building, it was essential that the panels and detectors be as discrete as possible, particularly in the prison and the Magna Carta Vault. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta and we are happy that our visitors will be able see one of the four original copies under the protection of Advanced panels.”www.advancedco.com

Coxdome Trade Range Sheds New Light On Technology At Essex School

A six week contract carried out by a building company experienced in roofing work, comprised of a series of rooflights on an East London school upgraded to insulated, twin-skin units from the Jet Cox Coxdome Trade Range: offering improved natural daylighting as well as enhancing the all-round energy and weather performance.

The work, at the All Saints Catholic School in Dagenham, was carried out by Forest Gate Construction earlier this year without any inconvenience to the school’s staff or pupils. Although the flat and barrel vaulted roof areas were in a generally good state of repair, the estates’ department responsible for the buildings’ upkeep took the decision to replace the existing rooflights over the computer suite and design & technology teaching space. This was due to the fact the existing units offered little insulation value and were coming to the end of their working life. A total of 38 of the 600mm x 600mm Coxdome Trade Range Rooflights, along with 300 mm high insulated upstands.

The double-skin domes feature tough polycarbonate glazing which will resist physical damage as well as extremes of weather. The rooflights feature trickle ventilation on two sides to help maintain a healthy indoor atmosphere; though they are hinged for manual operation if increased airflow is required during spells of unusually hot weather.www.jet-cox.co.uk

Improving Social Housing

The aesthetics of residential buildings can improve the quality of life of their tenants and the surrounding community. For the past couple of years European Social Housing Owners have been renovating their properties to provide comfortable and energy efficient homes.

Built in the mid 1960’s, the Bolsward Housing Complex in The Netherlands was in need of a makeover. Its four residential buildings had low ranking energy certificates and old brick facades, the interiors were outdated and in bad shape.

Dutch Housing Corporation Elkien decided on a programme to improve the life quality of the tenants while offering affordable, future – proof and sustainable accommodation to low income residents. A key requirement was to provide a building envelope and

external insulation that would improve the energy performance of the complex from band G, the lowest in the scale to band B, while remaining respectful of the original architecture.

Architects SIPMA BNA proposed a ventilated facade that would combine a modern, polished material with the old rough appearance given by the bricks. “Since the old design was outdated we decided to take a bold approach by creating vertical blocks through the use of contrasting colours,” explains Sipma. “The whole complex is now clad in Trespa® Meteon®.

The decision to use Trespa panels was made by Elkien’s project renovation team. “We chose Trespa® Meteon® because of its wide colour possibilities, its quality and the reputation and reliability of both the product and the company,” says Elkien’s project supervisor.

The ventilated facade, in combination with insulated balconies and roofs and the replacement of the old windows helped the building to achieve the desired B energy performance certification. The demand for the apartments has also increased as the complex has become a more popular place to live. The refurbishment programme was well received not only by the residents but by local authorities and community.www.trespa.com

LEDBar Helps Put On A Show

The wonderful art deco Prince Edward Theatre in London’s Old Compton Street designed by Edward Stone in 1930 now benefits from some 21st Century Lighting supplied by Light Projects.

Specified by Lighting Designer’s Pritchard Themis, the lighting plays an integral part of the innovative, exciting and dramatic scheme to illuminate the iconic façade of this Delfont Mackintosh theatre, currently home to Miss Saigon.

Used to highlight the building’s art deco arches and high level architectural detailing to great effect, the LEDBar is perfect for this kind of application where detailing and architectural features need to be emphasised.

Lensed LEDBar is a linear LED system available in a range of different white colour temperatures. Here, warm white (3000K) modules with a 66.7mm LED spacing were used to lift out the architectural features at both low and high level to create a seamless flow of light; while 30° and 60° lenses ensured the light was applied exactly where it was wanted.

The Real Benefits Of English Oak – The Most Iconic Of British Woods

Oak remains the most iconic of British hardwoods, but how does English oak fare against imported oak, and do designers and specifiers fully understand and appreciate the available choices and advantages of English oak over imported timber? Tom Barnes of Vastern Timber explains.Oak from English forests has been used in construction for centuries, and original oak beams continue to support structures more than 500 years old.

The traditional popularity of English oak can largely be explained by the availability of the trees and durability of the wood. As a natural building material, oak is extremely hard to destroy; large sections will resist fires intense enough to melt metal and will flex to accommodate the natural movements of a building.

A third of Vastern Timber’s business is in supplying oak beams, and the company has a particular passion for English oak (Quercus robur) which is considered to be the strongest of the oaks because it has a more interlocking grain than oak from continental Europe, which is characteristically more mild and straight grained.

Oak beams are usually cut from trees between 90 and 120 years old, ideally felled during the winter when the sap is down. The beams for construction tend to be fresh sawn or ‘green’, which means that they are in fact wet, and while this is of concern to many architects because of oak’s natural tendency to shrink and split, it is the ideal way to use the timber. The alternative, dry oak, is very hard and therefore more difficult to work.

There are two main sources for structural oak - the UK and France. While imported oak can often be cheaper, there is a sustainability price to pay if the wood is imported. There is also a great deal of difference in design flexibility. Local British sawmills are easy to access, and as well as the option to inspect timber and cuts before choosing, the designer will benefit from more flexibility in cuts from their local sawmill, especially curved and shaped wood.

But it is the issue of sustainability which ultimately dictates that English oak is the better and more responsible choice. With growing momentum of the Grown In Britain movement that aims to promote the benefits of British grown timber, as well as supporting better management of native forests and woodlands, the reality for architects and designers specifying structural oak is that there are more good reasons to buy British than not to. www.vastern.co.uk

Mapei Wood Floor System Specified At The Beaumont Hotel, Mayfair

Mapei’s complete wood floor system has been used to install oak flooring at a new hotel in Mayfair, The Beaumont Hotel. Grand in style, the elegant hotel, which has a distinct Grade II listed Art Deco façade, was developed by Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, in partnership with renowned restaurateurs Corbin & King. The interiors were designed by Richmond International and fitted-out by Chorus. Traditional fumed oak herringbone wood flooring was specified alongside Mapei’s eco system and installed, by AJK Wood Flooring, throughout all suites, bedrooms and public areas.

The hotel’s 1920’s Manhattan-style interior features over 1,300m2 of FSC and PEFC-certified Weitzer Fumed Oak Parkett, which combines a classic design with a stunning dark aesthetic. To prepare the subfloor, Mapei’s low VOC primer - Eco Prim T - was specified to improve the adhesion of levelling compounds.

Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation screed was then applied, prior to installation of the engineered flooring using Mapei Ultrabond Eco S955 1K– a single component isocyanate and solvent-free, sililated polymer-based adhesive.
