ONE-HUNDRED-AND-SEVENTY days after the first match was played to commence the 2019 EDFL season, the final three games will take place at Windy Hill today. In the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division senior men’s Grand Final, Keilor and Aberfeldie football clubs are #windyhillbound. Last year these two clubs provided nine players who were selected in the Premier Division Team of the Year, all of

whom are playing with their clubs again in 2019. If you want to see high quality community football, Windy Hill is the place to be at 2:15pm today.Keilor enters the match with an unblemished record, winning all 18 home-and-away matches and then defeating Aberfeldie by 14 points in their Semi Final encounter. Keilor have delivered against every challenge they have confronted this year and in most pundits’ eyes, will start the match as the clear favourites. Their two victories over Aberfeldie in the home-and-away matches were by 36 and 37 points. However, Aberfeldie have become an irresistible force on Grand Final Day. Today will mark the club’s seventh successive Grand Final appearance in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division. Aberfeldie had to wait a mammoth 41 years between their topflight successes in 1974 and 2015 and are hoping that 2019 will be a ‘three-peat’ after successes in 2017 and 2018.The strength of the two clubs is reflected in the fact that Aberfeldie and Keilor will also compete in the

Reserves Premier Division Grand Final. These two teams finished the home-and-away season in the top two ladder positions and should present a quality match. The AGA Apprenticeships Plus Under 19 Premier Division Grand Final is intriguing. Avondale Heights finished the home-and-away season in fourth position on the ladder, however, have enjoyed two great wins in their finals to date. Aberfeldie have been a strong team all year and will enter the match full of confidence after their Semi Final win over Strathmore.Being our final weekend of footy for this year, l would like to thank every player, coach and club volunteer who has contributed to making 2019 a successful year of EDFL football and netball. We hope you have had an enjoyable year and we look forward to your involvement in 2020. I would also like to the thank all EDFL partners for their ongoing support and to our staff and board members for their time and commitment.Good luck for today.Craig Armstead EDFL CEO

Scintillating Eagles Soar Over Cougars In Decider

CRAIGIEBURN claimed its second Division 1 premiership in four seasons with an impressive 37-point win over East Keilor on Saturday. The Eagles led the game from start to finish in perfect Windy Hill conditions, kicking eight goals to three through the middle two quarters to set up the win.Retiring midfielder Josh Young got the ball rolling with the first goal of the game at the two-minute mark, before Con Grampsas was able to respond seven minutes later. The next three goals all went the Eagles’ way and from there, the game was played on their terms.Craigieburn used its trademark speed to stretch East Keilor across the wide expanses of Windy Hill, with Tye Browning, Corey Viani and Josh Vilinskis all proving a handful for the sluggish and inaccurate Cougars.By half time the margin was 19 points and while Peter Tsavdaridis goaled for East Keilor early in the third to peg it back to 13, it didn’t take Craigieburn too long to re-gain the ascendancy. The Eagles piled on the next four goals during an entertaining third quarter, including a Vilinskis stunner that will go down as one of the great EDFL Grand Final goals.Twelve minutes into the third with the margin at 25 points, Vilinskis received a deft tap from Brock Chircop at half back and took off, taking three bounces as he dashed toward Craigieburn’s forward arc.The pacy 20-year-old launched the ball from the 50-metre line and scored an incredible goal, stretching Craigieburn’s lead to what proved an unassailable 31 points.East Keilor’s next goal didn’t come until the

16-minute mark of the final term.Late goals to Ben Nicholl and Luke McCormack added some respectability to the scoreboard for the Cougars but in the end, the day belonged to Craigieburn.John Bellino was the leading goal kicker on the ground with four majors while Vilinskis and Steve Boyall finished with two each. The David McWilliam Medal went to big man Billy Morrison, who was outstanding both in ruck and around the ground with his strong contested marking. It was Morrison’s second best-on gong in an EDFL Grand Final, after claiming the official honours in Jacana’s 2017 Division 2 triumph over Coburg Districts. He also finished with a goal to his name. For East Keilor, McCormack was the only multiple goal kicker with two, while star youngster Ben Caluzzi was rated the Cougars’ best by the EDFL Match of the Day call team.Craigieburn will again be part of Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division in 2020 after last competing in the EDFL’s topflight in 2017.

Christofi Reacts To Grand Final Loss

By LUKE D’ANELLO via Leader Newspapers

EAST Keilor was the best team during the home-and-away season but failed to deliver its best when it counted.Finals are often a different ball game, and the Cougars were left to do the chasing on the wide expanses of Windy Hill.A productive first year under coach Pat Christofi ended with a 37-point loss to Craigieburn in Saturday’s Division 1 decider. But, when the pain of the missed opportunity subsides, East Keilor has plenty to be proud of.The Cougars claimed the Division 2 flag just three seasons ago and were one win away from promotion to the topflight.Eighteen months ago they were one of the competition’s hyped teams after a fruitful summer before claiming six victories from 16 games and missing finals. But the club rebounded with aplomb, leaving it in a strong position to continue its climb.“Finals were a lot different to the home-and-away season,” Christofi said in the aftermath of the 13.17-95 to 7.16-58 defeat to the Eagles.“I’m sure we’ll work on that and get better going forward.“From where we’ve come to where we’ve ended up, it’s been a very good year. It’s very positive, happy with the year overall.“It just goes to show we’ve got a bit of improving to do, which was obvious today, but we’ll work on that over the summer, get recruiting, and we’ll go again.”With East Keilor’s reserves and seniors both qualifying for the Grand Final, the future appears bright. But the Cougars have already started planning for 2020, with Christofi revealing some big names had already put pen to paper.“There’s six or seven big recruits that have been announced,” he said.

“We’re planning for 2020 and we have been for the past few weeks.”Christofi said his team had “no excuses” after it struggled to find an answer to Craigieburn’s speed. The Cougars beat the Eagles twice by a combined margin of 91 points during the regular rounds before Lance Whitnall’s side won the major semi and the Grand Final.Ben Caluzzi, Ash Arrowsmith and Josh Grabowski worked hard for East Keilor, while Luke McCormack contributed two goals.“They’ve been nothing but great,” Christofi said of his playing group.“They’ve taken the losses well throughout the year and they’ve taken the wins in their stride.”

Aberfeldie Triumphs In Extraordinary Prelim

By LUKE D’ANELLO via Leader Newspapers

POWERHOUSE Aberfeldie has qualified for a seventh consecutive Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final after surviving an extraordinary rally from a never-say-die Strathmore in a remarkable contest on Sunday.Abers held a 20-point advantage at three-quarter-time of the Preliminary Final and appeared in control at Windy Hill. But big man Andrew Vavra and Sam O’Loughlin nailed the opening two goals of the final term for the Mores, setting the stage for a grandstand finish.Emerging forward Athan Tsialtas was almost the hero, bagging three majors in a remarkable three-minute burst to give his team a nine-point lead early in time on.But Jayden Foster had the final say at the other end, kicking the final two goals of the match to seal Aberfeldie’s nail-biting three-point triumph, 11.9-75 to 10.12-72.Abers will face minor premier Keilor in the grand final for the third time in the past four seasons.Co-coach Adam Potter conceded his team got out of jail but said a berth in the decider was a just reward for the perennial contender after a 16-2 regular season.“I’m relieved and happy for the players because at the end of the day, no doubt we probably stole that one in the end,” Potter said.“But if you look at our home-and-away season, it’s the second-best record we’ve had in my five years.“We worked so hard during the year, playing 37 players, and the combination of youth and experience. I’m just really pleased for our players that they get another opportunity to do something really special.”Potter heaped praise on Tsialtas, who finished with five goals for the losing side in the absence of key marking target Josh Helliwell.Tsialtas played just seven senior games for Strathmore last season, but looks a player to watch after an enthralling contest with Abers star Ryan Allan.“That’s the sort of game that can shape a young player like that. I thought he was outstanding,” Potter said.“Ryan Allan’s a remarkable player, and I still rated Ryan’s game at a high level, but they found a way and that’s the most pleasing thing.”Jayden Foster’s four-goal haul was decisive for the winners, while Jess Rush and Victor Carboni also provided plenty of drive.Aberfeldie’s Jorden Braddy and Strathmore’s Andrew Vavra also had a great duel in the ruck. After an even first half, Abers established what looked

to be a significant advantage after piling on five goals to one in a 15-minute period of dominance to close out the third quarter. No one was expecting Tsialtas’ heroics, however, as he fell painfully short of giving Strathmore a famous victory.Potter heaped praise on the Mores, who have lost two Preliminary Finals in a row by a combined margin of five points.“Full credit to Strathmore. I want to pay them due respect,” he said.“I think Matthew Horne has done an outstanding job since they lost that game to Glenroy in Round 12. The way he’s galvanised that group with a mixture of youth and experience — similar to us — they’ve had a fantastic year.”Abers have dropped three games to Keilor this season, but held the lead for most of the major semi-final before falling to a 14-point defeat.“We did a lot right,” Potter said.“We won the clearances, we won the inside 50 battle. For us, it’s just about recovering now.”

Preview | Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final

By ADEM SARICAOGLUTODAY’S Grand Final could well be decided by a moment or two of individual brilliance. In the two lead-up finals that have featured Aberfeldie this September, we’ve seen some of the EDFL’s biggest names rise to the occasion and deliver for their side when it mattered most.Thirteen days ago in the Qualifying Final between these two clubs, Aberfeldie looked to be in control with a commanding 22-point buffer early in the final term.Keilor had use of the scoring end, however, and the Blues certainly made the most of it.Jayden Foster’s goal at the two-minute mark was Aberfeldie’s final score of the game, as Keilor then took control at a soggy Windy Hill.In a low-scoring game, Reynolds Medal favourite, Kane Barbuto, kicked two of Keilor’s four unanswered goals that saw the Blues re-gain the lead and earn direct passage through to today’s decider. It was another example of how Keilor can hurt you with quick goals in a short amount of time.Earlier in the game, Aberfeldie’s vaunted back six struggled to contain Matthew Clark, who booted three consecutive goals to start the second quarter. While it was close and hard-fought, the Qualifying Final was a game of momentum and when Keilor had it, led by Barbuto and Clark, Aberfeldie couldn’t stop it.In Sunday’s Preliminary Final, Strathmore’s Athan Tsialtas caught fire late in the final term and booted three goals within four minutes to put his side nine points in front.Time was still on Aberfeldie’s side, but the premiers needed a Tsialtas-like effort inside their own forward 50.Foster was the one who answered the call, kicking the game’s final two goals to keep Aberfeldie’s quest for a ‘three-peat’ of premierships alive. If today’s game is on the line come the final quarter, someone will have to make a hero of

themselves, and both sides have numerous players who could step up.Dean Galea, seen by many as the EDFL’s best forward, was held goalless by Ryan Allan a fortnight ago and will be better for the week off having dealt with hamstring issues in the lead-up.Clark has kicked seven goals in Keilor’s last two games against Aberfeldie and will look to again outwork Jacob Craven.Barbuto and Dylan Joyce can both hit the scoreboard on a regular basis and Todd Stevenson could influence the game from any part of the ground, having kicked 17 goals from 12 appearances this season. For Aberfeldie, Foster and Josh Pound are proven finals performers and both have found form, in trying conditions for forwards, at the right time of year.Through the middle, the likes of Sam Cattapan and Jean-Luc Velissaris are constant scoring threats while the experienced trio of Luke Blackwell, Josh Cubillo and Jaryd Cachia will all look to stretch Keilor’s midfield brigade throughout the day.Blackwell is a proven performer on this stage, having claimed the Reg Rose Medal in both of Aberfeldie’s Grand Final victories in 2017 and 2018.The coaching battle is a fascinating one as well.Adam Potter is gunning for his fourth flag since joining Aberfeldie in 2015 and a win here would see his club become only the fifth in EDFL history to claim three consecutive premierships in the 89-year history of A-Grade/Premier Division – a feat last achieved by Keilor in the mid-1990s.His counterpart, Mick McGuane, took Keilor to the top of the mountain in 2008 and 2016 and today is looking to steer his Blues to a perfect season – something Potter already has done with Aberfeldie (2015).Both are already all-time EDFL coaching greats, but today’s result could decide whose legacy is greater.

Kaine Hocking's Grand Final Five | KeilorKEILOR has not lost a single game in 2019 despite suffering key injuries early in the season. The depth was tested, but the Blues have passed that test with flying colours thanks to some huge individual contributions from several key players throughout the year.EDFL Media analyst, Kaine Hocking, has revealed the five Keilor players he believes will play the biggest roles in today’s Grand Final.

#4 - KANE BARBUTO Pictured on Page 26The skipper from Joe Brown Oval is having an outstanding year and has led from the front throughout, kicking 16 goals in 19 games and being named in the best players 12 times. He leads with both his voice and his actions, and the 300-gamer will be looking for redemption for his club on the biggest stage of all. Aberfeldie co-coach, Adam Potter and his midfield will need to pay attention to Barbuto around stoppages and most importantly, forward 50 stoppages, as he could win the game off his own boot if allowed enough freedom.

#2 - TODD STEVENSONThis ‘man-bunned’ utility is having a year like that of his skipper, if not better. If Barbuto being is talked about as favourite for the Reynolds Medal, then this bloke would have to be in that same conversation. Seventeen games, 12 goals and 12 times in the best players is some sort of season. Stevenson’s ability to impact the contest in the air and at ground level makes him hard to match up on, as he can play in multiple positions as required in today’s game. He can provide another mid-range target inside 50 as well, so he’ll be important with how key match-ups play out today. With Ryan Allan likely to go to Dean Galea and Jacob Craven to likely take Matthew Clark, Stevenson will look to be a third target inside Keilor’s forward 50 and help keep his teammates in one-on-one situations.

#25 - BRETT STILLMANThis mid-season recruit has thrived under coach, Mick McGuane at Keilor.

Nine mentions in the Blues’ best players from 12 games is his best return since becoming a regular to senior football. Stillman, who could easily have a sponsorship with Bondi Sands, will be looking to keep his run of form going with some in-and-under grunt to provide clean ball for Keilor’s outside runners. As good as both sides are in offence and attack, the midfield battle will be an interesting one as two weeks ago in the Semi Final, Aberfeldie won the clearance battle. Stillman and his on-ball group will be looking to swing that stat the Blues’ way today.

#10 - MATTHEW CLARK Pictured leftThis tall, red-haired centre-half forward propelled Keilor’s comeback in the second half the Semi Final 13 days ago. An inaccurate first half saw Clark kick 0.3 and he also gave away a 50-metre penalty. Knowing he owed his side an improved output, Clarke kicked three goals in the third quarter to keep Keilor in the game. He was a dangerous match-up for Potter and his men, having Craven one-out against a fired-up Clark. Will we see the same match-up again today or will Potter go to Plan B for a man who has kicked 43 goals in 18 games this season?

#18 - STEFAN RADOVANOVICThis rebounding half back was best-on-ground in the Semi Final two weeks ago. His intercept marking was a feature to his game, and he was always looking to then take the game on with ball in hand. For Aberfeldie, it might be worthy to consider a defensive match-up for Radovanovic in order to try and take away one of Keilor’s key attacking points off half back. If they leave him to do what he wants, then Aberfeldie may just pay the price, as Radovanovic is high on confidence and could well prove to be the difference today and be in contention for the Reg Rose Medal.Kaine Hocking will be part of the EDFL Match of the Day live coverage of the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final on 98.9 North West FM & facebook.com/essendondfl.

Kaine Hocking's Grand Final Five | AberfeldieABERFELDIE boasts a plethora of high-quality talent across all parts of the ground. The midfield is full of experienced stars, the forward line is dynamic, and the back line is recognised as arguably the best that all of local footy has to offer.EDFL Media analyst, Kaine Hocking, tells us who he thinks are Aberfeldie’s five most important players in today’s Grand Final.#22 - SAM CATTAPAN An interrupted 2018 season saw Cattapan only play the seven games and miss selection in the winning Grand Final side. In similar form to his 2017 season, Cattapan has played 20 games this year for 20 goals and nine mentions in the best players. However, one notable thing is that in all three games against Keilor this year, Cattapan has failed to feature in the bests. For Aberfeldie to achieve a ‘three-peat’ of flags today, Cattapan will need to be at his best along with his 21 teammates. With Aberfeldie winning the clearance battle over Keilor in the Semi Final two weeks ago, they will need to fix their disposal from clearances to take full advantage, and I’m sure getting the Sherrin into Cattapan’s hands will be high on their priority list. #32 - VICTOR CARBONICarboni is a small that can play many roles. The former Calder Cannon is one of the key reasons Aberfeldie got through to the Grand Final. The run-and-carry both Carboni and Jess Rush provided in Sunday’s Preliminary Final win over Strathmore played a key part in the final result of the game.Eight times in the best players from 19 games is a good return for this midfielder/half forward. Expect Carboni to start forward and push into the midfield today. Up forward, his pace and tackle pressure will be important to lock the ball inside 50 for repeat stoppages and put pressure on the Keilor back six. With an average of only 59 points scored in three games against Keilor this year, Abers will be looking for more contribution on the scoreboard from their midfielders.Carboni only has the one goal for the year, so can he be the one to provide a fresh avenue to goal today? He isn’t the only Aberfeldie midfielder who hasn’t hit the scoreboard much, with Jaryd Cachia, Wilson Berry, Josh Cubillo and Luke Blackwell all kicking less than three goals each for the year. #6 - JAYDEN FOSTER Pictured leftWith two game-winning goals on Sunday and four for the

day, Foster played a huge role in booking the Gorillas a spot in the big dance. Foster has kicked 42 goals in each of his last two seasons, so he would be happy with his consistent form. A lot rides on the big guy’s shoulders, as Josh Pound (27 goals) is the only other Aberfeldie forward with 20-plus goals for the year that is certain to be lining up today. If Foster can get separation and space inside forward 50, then Foster looms as the most dangerous Aberfeldie forward for Keilor to worry about. If he’s allowed room to move, the big marking forward can be a match-winner. #4 - JARYD CACHIAThis inside midfielder crossed from Strathmore in the off-season to play at the same club as his younger brother, Conor. A runner-up in the Reynolds Medal in 2017, Cachia hasn’t quite had a standout season at his new club, but he can certainly be a match-winner with his ball-winning ability and gut running. At times in Sunday’s Prelim, he played as a back-up ruck inside forward 50 for Jorden Braddy. Cachia’s extensive experience from the AFL, VFL and SANFL could be a huge factor in getting Aberfeldie over the line today. Could we see a heavyweight head-to-head battle with Keilor star, Kane Barbuto? As previously mentioned, no matter the role Cachia plays today, he, along with his fellow mids, will need to hit the scoreboard and provide more scoring options for Aberfeldie to improve on its previous efforts against the Blues this year. #29 - RYAN ALLANArguably the best defender in the EDFL, Allan’s near-certain match-up on the comp’s best forward, Dean Galea, is worth the Windy Hill entry fee alone. An injury in Round 6 kept Allan on the sidelines for the best part of two months, but he has definitely re-gained some top form in this finals series. Thirteen days ago, he kept Galea goalless.Allan’s ability to continually take intercept marks is a key feature of his game, as well as his ability to read the ball. Sides that continue to bomb the high ball inside 50 will play into Allan’s hands. I’m sure Mick McGuane and his men have been working on forward delivery and their last kick inside 50 in the lead-up to today to best aid their forwards. If not, then Allan and his fellow defenders will have a field day in the air.Kaine Hocking will be part of the EDFL Match of the Day live coverage of the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final on 98.9 North West FM & facebook.com/essendondfl.
