From the Rector - June 2011Over the past few years, I find that I

am more and more intrigued with the ideasand ideals of some parts of the "emergentchurch." The emergent church is not somuch a denomination as a way of beingchurch. In working with the adult Biblestudy groups, I find that many people haveembraced an understanding - or at least ahope - of religion that is truly applicable tolife in today's world. The emergentchurch sees the Bible as a guidebook forliving the kind of life that Jesus led andthey understand that a disciple is one whoseeks to follow Jesus and model his or herlife on the life and teachings of Jesus. They recognize God as a God of love andnot an angry parent. They enjoy thefreedom to ask questions ap-d engage indiscussions about how_religion and theBible are meaningful in the 21st century.

Participants in the emergent church arehappy to take elements of worship from awide variety of historic traditions adapting and blending various historicchurch practices as a way of creatingworship that touches the mind, heart andsoul because it is creative, experiential, and sensory. It is not unusual for thesechurches to use and blend traditions of theAnglican Church, the Catholic Church, theOrthodox Church and Celtic Christianity. They are willing to explore various

practices such as prayer beads, icons, spiritual direction, the labyrinth, and lectiodivina. For this reason the emergingchurch is also sometimes called the"Ancient-Future" church. They recognizethat God does seem to care about sacredspace and ritUal. They remember that hetold Moses how to design the tabernacleand gave detailed directions to Solomonfor building the Temple in Jerusalem.Reformers in the 16th century, knowing thepower of beauty, of liturgy, of art andmusic, stripped churches clean of allartwork demanding bare walls, clearwindows, no music, and no statues.

Of course, it's not just about settingand style. The foremost concern of theemergent church is having its membersparticipate with God in God's redemptivework in the world. It recognizes thechurch as the community through whichGod works and the means by which Godmakes the "Good News" available to theworld. It calls the church to do as Jesusdid: help individuals, families, andsocieties and reach out to the least, thelost, and the lonely making them welcomein our midst. It calls the church to givespecial care and attention to those who aredespised or neglected by the world. Itreminds its members that "God sent hisson into the world not to condemn theworld but that the world might be SAVEDthrough him." [Jn3:16]

The emergent church believes that weare all called to be evangelists. Not thekind who grab you by the collar and ask ifyou are saved; or the kind who tell youhow sinful and fallen you are and how youare going to hell; and certainly not thekind who make you feel guilty about who

Page 3: The Epistle - June 2011

you are or what you've done in the past.Ratper, it calls its members to talk andteach about Jesus and tell of God's greatlove for the world and how that love isfreely available to each and every person.

A message about the infinite greatnessof God's love and its availability toeveryone... that's my kind of church.

Blessings,

The following is taken from The ParishPaver Ideas and Insights for ActiveCongregations

Financial Stewardship:Myths & Principles (Part 6)

Seven Financial Stewardship Principles

Leaders in high-per-capita-givingcongregations understand and base theirgiving-education methods on thefollowing statements:

6. "We base onr stewardshipappeals on a biblical rather thanon an institutional foundation."

Rick Warren puts it this way: "Weeasily miss the spiritual significance

Page 7: The Epistle - June 2011

of giving money. We need to give• the first part of our day in

meditation to God. We need to givethe first part of our week in worshipof God. We need to give the firstpart of our income to God. We needto give the first part of our social lifeto fellowship with other Christians."Each of these four kinds of givingkeeps our mental compass Godfocused. (Discovering SpiritualMaturity by Rick Warren, audiotapes, c.L.A.S.S. 201)

7. "Our church uses an annualcampaign based on theseprinciples every year, and we see10 to 15 percent increases in totalgiving each year."

Congregations can delete andreplace the myths that keep them inpoverty. For example, somechurches have experienced 100percent growth in giving from sevenconsecutive years of an annualstewardship program such as NewConsecration Sunday. "

The Bottom Line

Stifle the inclination to introduce

giving appeals with statements such as, "Iwish we didn't have to talk about money, but. ... "

Instead, make statements such as, "Ourannual stewardship campaign is anopportunity for each of us to reflect on thespiritual connection between generousgiving and becoming rich toward God."

This is the final chapter of FinancialStewardship: Myths & Principles.

ALL ABOUT AIR

a Recently the compressor in our airconditioning unit died. It served us welland faithfully for the past seventeen years. As you are aware the compressor isresponsible for providing air-conditioningin the summer. We were told by thecompany that installed the original unitand has serviced it faithfully all theseyears, that we would need to replace thecompressor unit and that the cost for a newunit, labor and materials would beapproximately $15,000. While significant, this is not an unreasonable amount for the

size of the compressor and the fact that itrequires a crane to get the old unit out andto install a new unit.

The finance comrnitteedeterrnined that

we could not reasonably expect to run thechurch without heat and air-conditioningand approved the expenditure. The vestrydid also. In keeping with prudentmanagement of pledge income, we hadbeen putting money aside the last coupleof years in a contingency maintenancefund in anticipation of just suchemergencies. We knew that 4n a plant aslarge, and as old, and as iJusy as ours thatthere would be maintenance issues that

couldn't be anticipated but which wouldrequire immediate attention. Fortunately,we had the generous contribution ofpeople who allowed us to keep and putextra "window money" in our buildingcontingency fUlid. Weare making up thedifference by using some otherundesignated funds in our budget. Ofcourse, this depletes a significant amountof our reserves.

In keeping with our policy oftransparency, we wanted you all to beaware of what has happened and how itwas handled. The contract for the

replacement and work is on the bulletinboard across from the office. The unit was, replaced the last week of May.

FABULOUS 50+ LUNCHEON ~

The Fabulous 50+ Luncheon, held onMay 11th, was a delightful gathering, andby all indications a huge success. TheHospitality Committee provided anelegant luncheon for 118 guests invitedfrom neighboring Episcopal churches inRegion VI.

Mother Joy celebrated an upliftingcommunion service, and the Rev. VaughnBooker from St. Phillips led the prayersboth before and after the meal. Our guestsdined on chicken salad, fresh assorted fruitand a biscuit served on fine china with

crystal accents. The dessert consisted ofvanilla pudding topped with whippedcream and a strawberry.

Birthdays and anniversaries wereremembered during the festivities withprayers, and further celebrated withstrawberry layered cake. While everyoneenjoyed dessert, Jennifer Cooper, a wellknown musician, accompanied by ByxBullock, entertained with musicalselections from the '50's and othersentimental favorites.

The dedicated members of the

Hospitality Committee (Lorraine Berry,Ken and Val Carter, Linda Cavanaugh,Barbara Ferguson, Kathy Fomadley, JaneFruh, Mary Fugate, Darlene Gardner,

Darlene Guy, Judy Hamilton, Linda Hurd,Lc»s Keech, J\1argaret Leman, LindaLockhart, G.O. and Joyce Lyon, SallieLyons, Elaine Miller, Vicky Mumford,Barbara Myers, Joan Ritter, Janet Sargent,Joyce Scofield and Betty Thompson) spentseveral days preparing for this semiannual event, and many more hoursreturning the hall to its original status. However, we consider this luncheon trulya "labor of love" that St. Paul's happilyprovides. The pleasure received is in thesmiles, thank yous and compliments givenby so many at the end of a lovelyafternoon.
