Mycontributionwouldbemyperspective:Ihaveafootinthemany“worlds”oftheEpiscopalChurch.I’vebeenactiveinmanyparishes,
varyingfrombroadchurchtohighAnglo-Catholic;working-classmidwesterntowealthyeastcoast,andeverywhereamixofsociopoliticalbeliefs.I’malsoactiveonalargerscale:receivingaMaster’sinTheologyfromSewanee,ontheboardofGBEC,andsupportingclergyfamiliesthroughTheCorporation.
NominatedbytheRev.MatthewRHanisianRachel’suniquevantagewithinourChurchatnationalandlocallevelswillserveuswellasoneofourdeputiestoGeneralConvention.WithherMAintheologyfromSewaneeandserviceontheGeneralBoardofExaminingChaplains,sheseesclearlytheissuesfacingTheEpiscopalChurchtoday.Locally,she’sservedtwochurchesinoutreachandliturgyandisactiveacrossthreediocesesworkingfortheCorporation.Finally,Rachelbringsboundlessenergyandasenseofgreatdutytoservinginthiscapacity.Shewrites,"IwanttohelpshapethekindofChurchwe'regoingtobe—onethatembraceschangethatneedstobemadewithoutforgettingthetraditionsthatconnectustotheverybeginningsofourfaith."

AsamemberofTheEpiscopalChurchsincechildhood,I’vebeenluckyenoughtobeinvolvedinafewdioceses,inmychildhoodhome,thediocesesofRhodeIsland,Massachusetts,andConnecticutandhereinmynewhome,theDioceseofMaryland.ThishasgivenmeauniqueperspectiveandabilitytoseethedifferentculturesthatexistwithinthegreaterChurch,andhowimpactfullarge-scaledecisionscanbeonthesecultures.I’vealwayswantedtobeinvolvedinthegovernmentofThe
EpiscopalChurchbecauseIfeelpassionatelyaboutourdesiretoberepresentativesofthewhole—strivingforjusticeandtruthasawelcoming,inclusivecommunity.IbelievethatthebestwaytocontinuetogrowandthriveistopushourselvestoexpandperceptionsanduserepresentationandacceptancetosharetheboundlessloveofGod.

TheRev.DianaE.CarrollSt.Luke’sChurch,EastportOccupation:rectorAsalifelongEpiscopalian,IcaredeeplyaboutmakingconnectionsbetweenourtraditionsandthenewplacesGodiscallingustogo.TheGeneralConventionisoneoftheprimaryopportunitiesforthatworktobecarriedout.In2015,IrepresentedtheDioceseofMarylandasadelegatetotheEpiscopalChurchWomen(ECW)TriennialMeetinginSaltLake
City.Whilethere,IparticipatedactivelyinthelegislativeprocessoftheECWandtestifiedataGeneralConventionhearingonmarriageritesforsame-sexcouples.Thisexperiencegavemeagreatdesiretobecomemoreinvolvedatthechurchwidelevel,particularlyasaGeneralConventiondeputy.Ialsohaveexperiencenavigatingthelegislativeprocessatthestatelevel.NominatedbytheRev.CanonScottGSlaterDianarepresentedourdiocesein2015atthetriennialgatheringoftheEpiscopalChurchWomenatGeneralConventioninSaltLakeCity.ThisgavehertheopportunitytoobservetheworkingsofGeneralConventionanddevelopafoundationforpotentiallyservingasadeputy.Asayoungercleric,DianawouldbringthesamegenerationalperspectivetoourdeputationintheHouseofDeputiesasshedidforECW.
TheRev.AdrienPDawson AllSaints’Church,Frederick Occupation:rectorIoffermyselfforleadershipasadeputyforGeneralConvention,2021.Ihaveservedasadeputyin2009,2012and2015.Itookabreakin2018afteracceptingthecalltoserveasrectorofAllSaints’,Frederick.Ihaveservedfourparishesinthedioceseoverthelast24years.Currently,Iam
servingthedioceseontheStandingCommitteeandtheCongregationalVitalityCohort.IrecentlycompletedtheCollegeforCongregationalDevelopment(CCD)andIamcommittedtoassistinplantingCCDinthediocese.Thegrace-filledworkofGeneralConventionhappenswhentheintimacyandtransformationalpowerofparishlifeisnurturedandmaturedbytheoverarchingsupportandconnectivityofabroadconventionpeople.Itcanhappeninanewlyformedrelationship,awell-craftedresolution,oratruereflectionspokenovertheJumbotron,touchingeveryone’sopenheart.NominatedbytheRev.KristoferHLindh-PayneIhaveknownAdrienforfifteenyearsandmyrespectforandtrustofherasaleaderseemsonlytoincreasewitheachpassingyear.HavingservedasGeneralConventiondeputythreeothertimespreviously,Adrienhasextensiveexperienceinthisrole.Aseasonedrector,sheisagiftedcommunicatorandabletoeffectivelybalancethepastoralandpropheticinwordanddeed.AsamemberoftheStandingCommittee,sheexemplifiescarefuldecision-makingandcreativethinking.Adrien’sministrycommitmenttowide-rangingareaslikecongregationalvitality,anti-racism,liturgy&music,andtheEpiscopalServiceCorpsreflectbroadknowledgeandexperience.Herthreeyearsasco-chairofplanningforDiocesanConventioncouldproveinvaluableinthepreparationprocessforourhostingofGeneralConvention.

2.TheConvention,uponitsfirstassembling,shallbecalledtoorderbythebishop,oriftherebenobishop,orifthebishopbeabsent,bythepresidentoftheStandingCommitteeorbysomememberofthatbodyappointedbythoseofitsmemberswhomaybepresent.
3.WhenthepresidenttakesthechaireverymembershallbeseatedandremainuncovereduntilthemembersshallhavelefttheConvention.
4.EachmemberoftheclergyentitledtoaseatintheConventionshallregisterattheSecretary’sdeskbydelivering to theSecretary theprescribedregistrationblankdulyexecuted,whichshallbecheckedagainstarolefurnishedbythebishoporotherecclesiasticalauthorityofthediocese,whichroleshallbeevidenceoftherightofthemembersoftheclergytoseatsuntiltheConventionshallhaveformallyactedonthequestion.
Each Lay delegate shall also register at the Secretary’s desk by delivery to the secretary theprescribedregistrationblankdulyexecuted,whichshallbecheckedagainstarolepreparedfromthecertificatesreceivedfromvestries.TheLaydelegateswhosecertificateshavenotyetbeenforwardedtothesecretaryshallthenlaytheircertificatesuponthetable,withthedeclarationsubscribedbytheConstitution,andwiththemtheprescribedregistrationblanksdulyexecuted.If bymeans of such registration a quorum of bothOrders appear, the presiding officer shallannouncethefact,anddeclaretheConventionisorganizedandreadyforbusiness:
ProvidedthatwheneveritisnecessarytocalltheroleoftheClergyandLaydelegatesthesurnameonlyshallbecalledexceptwheretheremaybetwoormoreofthesamename,inwhichcasetheyshallbedesignatedbytheadditionoftheirChristiannames.
5.Incaseoftheabsenceofthebishop,orofavacancyintheEpiscopate,thepersonwhocalledtheConventiontoordershallannouncethatthereisaquorumpresent.TheConventionshallthenproceedtoelectapresidentaccordingtotheSeventhArticleoftheConstitution;whoshall,sosoonastheelectioniscompleted,takethechairanddeclarethattheConventionisorganizedandreadyforbusiness.
6.Thefirstbusinessafterthedeclarationismade,eitherbythebishoporthepresident,shallbetheelectionofaSecretaryandanAssistantSecretary.TheChairshallthenappointtheCommitteesmentioned in theOrderofBusiness.TheChairshallalsoappointallothercommittees for theappointmentofwhichnootherprovisionismade,unlessotherwiseorderedbytheConvention.
7.Whenanymemberisabouttospeakordeliveranymattertotheconvention,themembershallarise,andwithduerespect,addressthepresident.

Becausewearepreventedfromgatheringin-personduetoCOVID-19,wewillbeusingavarietyofelectronicvotingmeansforballoting.PriortotheconveningofConvention,youwillbeaskedaspartoftheonlineregistrationprocessforconventiontovotetoacceptthemodifiedRulesofOrdertoallowustoconductConventionvirtually.Presumingamajorityapproval,thisvotewillberatifiedoncetheconventioniscalledtoorderbythebishop.
Aboutamonthpriortoconvention,youwillreceiveanemailwithalinktoanonlinevotingsoftwarecalled“SimplyVoting”thatwillallowyoutocastyourballotforallpersonsrunningforelectedoffices.PresumingthataminimumquorumhasvotedbythetimeConventionconvenes,thatelectronicvotewillbesufficienttoelecteveryoneaslongasthereisnotatieandthatvotewillbeannouncedandratified.
