FR. JOSH ’S JOURNAL

In this week’s Gospel, we hear the supposed excitement of King Herod as the Magi approach him,

announcing that they are in search of the newborn King. While his intentions seem to be

motivated by curiosity and excitement, we know ultimately that Herod’s excitement is fueled by

fear...who is this new born King and is he a threat to my power?

This week we can ask ourselves, what attracts me to Christ? Was it an encounter I’ve had

before, or maybe even an encounter we’re hoping to have? Do I truly trust and believe that Jesus

is the Lord of my life, or do I just go through the motions of the faith I’ve inherited? In order to

truly come to know Christ, he wants us to engage him, to be curious, to ask questions, but most

of all to trust Him. As we celebrate Epiphany, let us approach Christ not as Herod did with

caution and uncertainty, but with confidence that Jesus is indeed our promise and gift of

salvation and redemption if we but only open our hearts to him in trust and confidence.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 5TH

Having little, if any, knowledge of the Hebrew

Scriptures, the Magi rely on their study of

heavenly signs to discover meaning for the

earth. The Magi brought gold, frankincense,

and myrrh on their journey. What treasures do

I have to give to the Lord? Is he calling me to

be a priest, brother, or sister? If so call

Fr. Michael Casey, Director of Vocations,

Archdiocesan Pastoral Center, 860-761-7456,

e-mail [email protected], or visit the web

at www.hartfordpriest.com.
