Feast oF epIphany - chrIst, the lIght For all peoples

“Today you revealed in Christ your eternal plan of salvation and showed him as the light of all peoples.” (From the Preface for Epiphany)

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany, remembering the com-ing of the Magi from the East to worship the new born Messiah. The word “epiphany” was used by the Greeks to describe the appearance or mani-festation of a god among human beings. The term was used by the Greek Fathers to describe the Incarnation of the Son of God - the birth of Jesus. We look upon this solemnity today as a manifestation of the universal dominion of the newborn King. Christ came for the salvation of all people, Jews and Gentiles alike.

In remembering the coming of the Magi, we also remember the gifts they offered: gifts not just for any king, but prophetic gifts that spoke of who Jesus was: King, Priest, and Savior. The gift of gold is precious and a gift worthy of royalty: Jesus as King. Frankincense was traditionally burned to carry prayers to heaven and is symbolic of Jesus’ role as priest. Myrrh is tra-ditionally used as an embalming ointment and was one of the burial spices of Jesus (John 19: 39). It foreshadows his role as savior and his dying for the world.

As we remember the visit of the Magi and the gifts they offered, let us also come to Jesus and do him homage for all that he has done for us. What gifts do we offer?

We offer the gift of time: time to be present to one another, to minister to the needs of others, to bring the good news of Jesus to the world through our daily lives.

We offer the gift of talent: sharing the special gifts and abilities with which God has graced our lives for the benefit of our community, our church, and our world.

We offer the gift of treasure: giving from the bounty with which we have been blessed to support the work of the church in building the Kingdom of God. Let us joyfully come before our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and offer all that we can in thanksgiving for the gifts we have received, most espe-cially the gift of faith. Baptism of the Lord – Jan. 13, 2018

epIphany proclaMatIon!My sisters and brothers, the glory of the Lord Jesus has been made manifest and will continue to be revealed in our midst until he comes again. In the rhythms and alternations of time, let us recall and live the mysteries of our salvation.

Central to the entire liturgical year is our celebration of the TRIDUUM OF THE LORD, crucified, died and risen, which culminates on EASTER SUNDAY, the 21st of April. Every SUNDAY, when we recall this paschal mystery, holy Church makes present this great event in which Christ has conquered sin and death.

From Easter derive all our other celebrations: ASH WEDNESDAY, the beginning of the season of Lent, the 6th of March; the ASCENSION OF THE LORD, the 2nd of June, PENTECOST, the 9th of June; and the FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT, the 1st of December.

Likewise, in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, of the apostles and saints, and in the commemoration of all the faithful departed, the Church, in her pilgrimage here on earth, proclaims the paschal mystery of the Lord.

To Christ who is, who was, and who is to come, the Lord of all time and history: be endless praise now and forever! Amen.

catholIc dIctIonary: ‘VIrtues’Aristotle (non-Catholic philosopher who lived before Christ) defines moral virtue as "a disposition to behave in the right manner and as a mean between extremes of deficiency and excess, which are vices. We learn moral virtue primarily through habit and practice." According to one of the greatest philosophers and theologians of the Church, Saint Thomas Aquinas, virtues are deeply rooted habits. Those habits that make us intrinsically good are called ‘virtues’. The opposite are vices. There are essentially four main virtues from which Aquinas’ more extensive list flows. These virtues are prudence, justice, temperance, and courage (ST I-II; 61.2). They are known as the ‘cardinal virtues’. We also have other three major virtues called 'theological virtues', and these are: Faith, Hope and Charity. In the upcoming bulletins I would like to share with you brief definitions about each virtue and suggestions on how to put them into practice. Fr. Stasys, Pastor

an InVestMent In your parIsh

For many years, our Catholic parishes & schools have benefited from the charitable gifts of appreciated property from many good and generous people. Year-end giving becomes an important consideration for many people in these last weeks of the year 2018. Your gifts assist and advance the mission of the Catholic Church, bringing about tremendous good in our world.

If you are able to make a gift of appreciated stock, properties, or cash, while reducing your tax liability, please contact Fr. Stasys Mikalonis at (650) 494-2496, ext. 16.

lIturgIcal MInIsters

As we commission our Liturgical Ministers this weekend, I’d like to extend an invitation to all of you who might consider volunteering. It can be very rewarding to serve others at Mass and those who are homebound.

As Catholics, we serve God in many ways. Some tend to the sick and homebound. Some work with teens to help them seek Jesus and devel-op a good relationship with him. Others do good works with the poor and those less fortunate. Still others work for peace & justice.

Here at Mass, we serve God and one another by being liturgical ministers, assisting others to enjoy a prayerful experience every time we get together for Mass. In our service, we strive to enable spiritual prayer so that all can find the peace and strength to live out God’s plan every day.

I am always grateful for the support and help of the many volunteers we have in this parish. It takes every-one to make Mass a holy and sacred time spent together.

Please ponder and pray about your own calling and the invitation that each of the baptized is given to share his or her time and talent as a liturgical minister. Nora Lundin, Director of Liturgy & Music
