What is the Endocrine system?

The endocrine system produces chemicals that control many of the body’s daily activities.

It also regulates the long term changes such as growth and development.

It is made of glands which are organs that produce or release a chemical called a hormone.

What is a Hormone?

The chemical product of a Gland is called a hormone. They turn on, off, speed up or slow down the activities of different organs.

Hormone Production- hormones are released from the glands by nerve impulses or other hormones and are produced in the glands.

They tell cells called target cells what to do and only specific target cells respond to specific hormones.

Function of the Endocrine Glands

Each gland releases different hormones and thus controls different processes.

The endocrine glands, include the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, thymus and pancreas. They also include the ovaries in females and the testes in males.

The Hypothalamus

It regulates and controls the Pituitary Gland and plays a role controlling other glands.

Is the link between the Nervous system and Endo. system. E.g nerve messages controlling sleep and hunger come from the Hypothalamus.

It is a tiny part of the brain, near the middle of the head.

Pituitary GlandIt is just below the hypothalamus gland and it communicates with the it to control many activities.

It produces three hormones :

1 Stimulates the Thyroid to produce hormones.

2. A hormone that targets the kidneys

3. A pituitary growth hormone which targets bones and muscles.
