The most exciting Placement event of the year is around the corner! The Business School Placements Fair is targeted at Business School students looking to undertake placements or internships in 2014-2015 academic year. WHAT is the Placements Fair? An opportunity for you to meet and network with employers, past placement students, Employability team….all under one roof. WHY should you attend? The Business School Placements Fair is an excellent opportunity to meet employers face-to-face, without making any formal obligation to apply to their placements. It provides a chance to chat to prospective recruiters. You will be able to meet key University of Greenwich staff and past placement students linked to building relationships with industry. WHO is coming? IBM, NHS, Hilton, Xerox, ComputaCentre, Bloomberg, Vauxhall, University of Greenwich, Sandals …….and…….the list is growing! WHEN is it? Business School - Health and Safety Committee The Business School is looking for a first year undergraduate student volunteer to sit on our Health and Safety Committee. The Committee is formed of Health and Safety representatives of all departments within the Business School and your role would be to represent first year undergraduate students. • Your student ID card • Copies of your up-to-date CV (at least 10 copies) • Pen and notepad/paper
Dress code All students attending the event will be expected to wear smart clothing. (No hoodies, scruffy jeans or trainers!). Any students wearing inappropriate clothing will be turned away. Preparation Workshops You are strongly advised to come to one of the preparation workshops below. The aim is to help you prepare for the Fair. You can register to either workshop by following the above link. Wednesday 30th October 13:00 – 14:00 QA080 Thursday 7th November 13:00 – 14:00 KW016 What is expected of you: Remember that all of the employers are giving up their time, for free, to help and advise you on the day. You must act professionally at all times. Acting professionally includes:
• Being appropriately dressed – see dress code above • Being prepared – having an up-to-date CV, researching the organisations in advance,
being prepared with • sensible questions • Being on time – last admission will be at 15:45 • Research companies – do not ask “… and what do you do?”
RESEARCH
Research is the fundamental requirement of all companies
Identify the entry requirements, eligibility, specialist areas of IT/computing, business, etc the
company has opportunities in
Use Mintel, the Economist, Computer Weekly, FT Online, BBC News Online, trade journals,
current (inter)national press to find out what is happening in today’s technology environment
Prepare relevant and conversation-sparking questions
Do NOT ask the question ‘what opportunities do you have?’

PREPARATION • Preparation is key to increasing your chances beforehand • Update your CV (see below) – make Business, Marketing, etc • Practice your presentation skills in advance • Understand what your main selling points/strengths are • Be completely familiar with your academic profile • Give thought to your career path – what is your strategy/goal? • Be prepared to answer questions such as Why the degree? Why UoG? Which industry? What do you
want • to do? • Think about which professional body you are most drawn to, and why (BCS, e-Skills, IET)?
NETWORKING AND COMMUNICATION • Networking and good communication will get you a long way if done in the right way • Do NOT walk around in groups/with friends – this does nothing for your long-term confidence, or • attractiveness to potential employers • Think before you speak – structure your questions and answers, demonstrate technical knowledge • Show your interpersonal skills – enthusiasm, motivation, communication • Eye contact is very important, look at and engage with the person you are talking to • If you are asked a question by an employer, never answer with just a ‘yes’ or ‘no’, always expand by
using • examples of your personal and practical skill set, in particular your work experience, etc. • Be aware of non- verbal body language, always SMILE when you shake hands with employers • Listen and show attention to detail (names, facts, tips etc) • At all times, show a professional, business approach – even when you are finished talking to a
particular • recruiter
