Really Sad Day…LOU REED died!Without him we could have never lived through the Saturday Night Fever Days of Disco and even though most readers will only know “Walk on the Wild Side…” he headed all of that generation of cutting edge rock-n-roll and in a way he brought life and meaning back to rock. With Lou there was purpose, direction and some great music…I remember being introduced to him for the first time while we had a long layover in New York…flying Magic Carpet Airlines to a duty post in Europe. One of our AIT Bubbies was from New York and being the young 19-20 year olds, that we were, with a paycheck in our pocket…he lead us to a club called CBGB and playing that night was this dude…Lou Reed…Oh, ya! The guy on the radio singing “Walking on the Wild Side?” We must have had one hell of a night as we wound up asleep at the bus stop, feeling sick and dead broke...other than bus fare pinned to out jackets…But…Man if I could remember…Terrible lost to me and to anyone who truly loves music! - Emil

I have never been a real fan of Rio as it always seemed so touristy and seemed to lack the hospitality, friendliness and acceptability of my San Paulo. Forgive me…I am jaded and spoiled by San Paulo’s sense of its lied back lifestyle. I forget that most of you are tourists and the fast pace of the hustle of people, traffic and of the swiftness in which the locals can extract your money from ya is why you came. Some older people come after watching Bing and Bob’s “Road to Rio” and are sadden to fine a 21st century town that rivals everywhere except Shanghai…They leave disappointed about the wreckage of a dream that they built for themselves over maybe a generation…or if its Carnival, they usually leave with a nasty social disease or two…ONLY THEIR DOCTORS back home will know…but as a civic reminded to all medical professionals who have not read “World War Z” it started here! Our own trip of went sideways because we needed Carmen San Diego or even Dora the Explorer would have been nice but, by chance we brought Carmen…NO! I wish it was Carmen Miranda at least we would have been free to dance with fruit in our hair…instead we got her cousin…who started before we even left San Paulo in demanding her Miranda Rights…the right to do only what she wanted to do, to announce every five minutes that she needed to return to the hotel to use the restroom and most importantly…her right to shop non-stop as she force marched through every shopping district in Rio. - Emil

Normally, I am rather shy and I wouldn't ask but, I know you don't I? How long have you been in town...Why Yes...I do both love and hate this city...I come from a place where you can go for miles without bumping into another living soul...so the crowds can spook me but, the energy, the masses of people...all the same but, when you look close they all have made their own mark ...Are you taking the train downtown?

“LINGERING AMONGST THE MYTHOLOGY OF A LONG REMEMBERED SMILE…”Recently I discovered that time has not been kind to meAs I fell head first into the hockas-laced descend downwards through the bottomless spirals of the blindingly seductive rabbit hole of “what if”It was then that I cursed old lady luck and felt angry for the shitty hand that she had dealt meLost in an evening highlighted by glasses of Cuban Rum and the last of the fine Cuban cigars that I smuggle across the borderIt was then that the guru’s words (originally lost on me) rushed into the wounded void and as I had once before experienced out on the open road to Damascus As it was then, so as it is now, although they were wildly different venues but the shack cloth still fits as the truth that rains down on me not as expensive, scented ash but, rather it clumped down as dollar store purchased ashes, Out of the wilderness of my empty soul, in a booming voice, reality spoke slowly and clearly“That boat had a long time ago sailed”…And I was handily reminded that I had freely cast up my lot to the alter upon which old lady luck ruled, begging her to erase the pain of that long remembered smile(Indeed) I had truly stranded my own self up here upon this far distant shore to live amongst the pages of La Confession de foi des Mennonites…Ego be dammed… along with my half-hearted effort to fraying attempts to regain a hold on my ragged reality of truth not tainted by that most potent opiate of “what if?”…And all that is left, on this frost early dawn, is me,I am left alone as the crowd has long since thinned out and alone here I sit and pretend my pondering “what was I thinking?” “What have I done?”The reality was nothing, I hadn't and didn't as that was the bag of the mantra of my being raised by the wolves of “been there…done that…” and sadly, regrettably, as with any other opiates, the power of “What if” fails me too and it waves me on as it swiftly faded into the light of the first rays of the upcoming day…and a distant bell rang calling me to yet another day of my ritual, zombie obedience to reality that has never been tainted by the opiates…

The coffee was cold but, your smile was warm and the conversation was refreshing as it extended late into the day...never understood Amway, the business opportunity or how I could become a distributor...who would have know...glad you asked me...another cup of coffee? - Tokyo 2012
