Hello, What a busy week of information this

has been. Meeting with so many of you, learning

what I can be looking forward to as we live right

on the skirt edge of Freeport, Florida.

I wanted to share this incredible story in case you didn’t hear it

over the weekend. How would you have reacted, just sit there and do as they say? Just

cause they have a gun? Maybe it’s time you consider getting you a safety mechanism to

fend for your family in case of someone tries to bully you around, to rape you or rob

you. Either way they have a gun and appears to intend on using it…..what are going to

do?

Read what these Heroes saved citizens from...BTW, the were military veterans.

Train heroes 'gave us an example of what is possible,'

says French President . Fine example of response of veteran’s.

The French-American academic, 51, was in a hospital recovering from a gunshot

wound. Before the other men got involved, Moogalian tried to take away the suspect's

rifle but the man shot Moogalian in the neck with a Luger pistol, his wife, Isabelle Risa-

cher, told France's Europe 1 radio.

He'll receive his own Legion of Honor when he gets better, the French government has

said.

Moogalian's identity became public on Monday after Americans Anthony Sadler,

Spencer Stone and Alek Skarlatos received the Legion of Honor -- France's highest rec-

ognition.

British passenger Chris Norman, who helped tackle the gunman, also received the

award during a ceremony at the Élysée Palace.

"By their courage, they saved lives," President François Hollande said. "They gave us

an example of what is possible to do in these kinds of situations." Authorities have said

a massacre might have occurred if not for the heroics of the men who attacked the sus-

pect aboard the high-speed Thylas train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris last Friday.

The alleged gunman, identified as Moroccan national Ayoub El Khazzani, carried an

AK-47 assault weapon with nine magazines of ammunition, a Luger pistol with extra

ammo and a box cutter, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.

El Khazzani may have links to terror groups, European official said.

Four people were injured, with Moogalian being the last one still in the hospital,

authorities said. His wife said he's in stable condition.

Risacher told France's Europe 1 radio her husband was quickly suspicious of the suspect

because he entered the toilet with his suitcase and stayed inside a long time.

"Sometime later, the man came out and it is there (her husband) saw that he had a

weapon," she said. "My husband ran to the man to remove his weapon."

'I'm hit, I'm hit'

Moogalian has duDuring the struggle over the rifle, the suspect shot Moogalian in the

neck with a Luger.

"I did not see the gunman because it happened too fast and I was hidden behind the

seats," she said. "My husband collapsed, I saw him through the seats. My husband

looked at me and he said, 'I'm hit, I'm hit.' He thought it was over and that he was dying.

There was blood everywhere."

Stone was badly cut in the struggle but was still able to help Moogalian by putting pres-

sure on his neck to stop the bleeding.

Moogalian's sister, Julia Moogalian, spoke to CNN on Monday and thanked Stone for

saving her brother's life.

"My brother may not still be here if it weren't for him," she said. "He was selfless in

staying there with my brother. Our family is very appreciative."

A biography on Moogalian's website says he was born in Durham, North Carolina, and

that his family later moved to Virginia. As an adult he moved to France where he

worked as a translator and English

teacher for business professionals.

His website says he's a artist,

teacher and musician and recently

published a novel.

Traveling the train with wife

and their dog, Benny.

Mark Moogalian couldn't make it to the Legion of Honor ceremony Monday when

four men were honored for subduing an armed terror suspect on a French train.

Advocates for mass-migration are using skewed finan-

cial claims to smear Donald Trump’s popular border

proposals, which actually would help revive the near-

bankrupt Social Security and Medicare programs.

For every illegal migrant household that leaves the United

States under Trump’s plan, Americans would recoup

nearly three-quarters of a million dollars ($719,350), ac-

cording to 2010 data collected by Heritage scholar Robert

Rector.

The lifetime savings accrued from one deported illegal

household would provide funds for 125 low-income inner

city students to receive the maximum Pell Grant award in

2015-2016 ($5,775); it could cover the cost of pre-

kindergarten for 90 at-risk children (around $8,000 per

child); or it could cover the one year cost of Medicaid for

124 enrollees ($5,790 based on FY2011 data).

But business interests want the migrants to stay. That’s

because migrants help lower the cost of Americans’

wages, but also because the migrants spend their wages —

plus taxpayer aid — at retail stories and rental agencies.

For example, the American Action Forum (AAF), a busi-

ness-backed pro-amnesty group, claims that legal costs and

forced migration would spike the cost of Trump’s plan up

to $300 billion to arrest and remove all illegal immigrants

living in the United States. The AAF was founded by Fred

Malek, who co-founded and chairs a hospitality investment

company whose hotels employ many low skilled migrants.

AAF’s cost projections have been trumpeted by many in

the mainstream media such as NBC and Fox News.

In reality, “a modest increase in enforcement (such as E-

verify or visa tracking) would cause significant attrition in

the illegal population– sending millions of illegals home

on their own at no cost to the U.S. taxpayer.” said Jessica

Vaughan, policy director at the non

-partisan Center for Immigration

Studies.

There’s good evidence for

Vaughan’s argument. “Arizona’s

population of unauthorized immi-

grants of working age fell by about

17 percent” in the course of a single

year, after the state began to en-

force E-verify, according to the

Public Policy Institute of Califor-

nia.

The claim from Malek’s AAF also

ignores the financial savings caused

by the return of migrants to their

home countries.

Illegal migrants cost U.S. taxpayers

a net total of nearly $100 billion

annually.

STATE SENATOR SEEKS TO

BAN CONFEDERATE FLAGS

FROM ALL PUBLIC PROPERTY

IN FLORIDA

Florida state Sen. Geraldine Thompson (D-Orlando),

wants to ban the flying of the Confederate flag on any

public property.

Thompson has filed

a bill to ban the

Confederate flag

from government

facilities in Florida.

She says she doesn't

buy the argument

about "heritage."

She filed a bill this

week at the state capitol for the 2016 legislative session

that, if passed, would ban the display of the Confederate

flag on all government-owned property.

Thompson takes exception with the flags that fly at memo-

rial monuments at courthouses in Marion and Walton

counties. On July 14th, Walton County commissioners

voted unanimously to replace the "Battle Flag" of the Con-

federacy with the more accurate and historical official flag

of the Confederacy in a compromise with those who were

offended by the one that has flown there since 1964 - the

100th Anniversary of the War Between the States.

State representative Dennis Baxley (R-Ocala) noted if the

bill came to the committee he chaired it would die there.

"It is unfortunate that we’ve gotten tied up in this discus-

sion of cultural cleansing. The problem is once you start

moving on this, then it goes to monuments, then it goes to

roads, then it goes to disturbing graves," Baxley said.

South Walton Feasibility Study completion

heralds new community meetings

“We expect the results of the feasibility study by the

end of August,” said Dave Rauschkolb, speaking on be-

half of A Better South Walton (ABSW). “As more citi-

zens of South Walton come to understand the workings

of our local government, many are questioning what we

can do to preserve and protect our quality of life and all

that is unique about our community. We are planning a

series of community meetings throughout South Walton

beginning in September to discuss the anticipated results

of the study.”

ABSW is exploring solutions to pressing issues in

South Walton County that include proper allocation of

tax dollars, governance and local representation. Coa-

lescing around the issue of building a Hampton Inn in the

Seagrove neighborhood, community members quickly

realized that without a greater degree of input into a vi-

sion for the future, issues like the chain hotels will con-

tinue to threaten our South Walton neighborhoods.

Incorporating South Walton is just one potential solu-

tion the group is exploring. That option was discussed in

a series of three community meetings held in May of this

year where residents, business and property owners were

encouraged to voice their vision for the future of our

area. ABSW authorized a feasibility study that will

answer many of the questions raised at the community

meetings regarding our tax base, demographics and the

viability of a municipality south of Choctawhatchee Bay.

“We are actively seeking donations to fund the feasibility

study through our website

www.abettersouthwalton.com,” said Rauschkolb. “The

data collected in the study will benefit all of Walton

County regardless of whether incorporation goes forward

or not,” according to Rauschkolb. ABSW has partnered

with South Walton Community Council, a 501 (c)(3)

nonprofit organization, to accept tax-deductible dona-

tions for this cause.

“We are open to any solution that gives our commu-

nity more input into the direction of our future. We are

experiencing a high degree of increasing growth, the

third highest in the state. We have a lack of infrastruc-

ture to handle the current and future growth. Clearly, it

has become apparent there is a need for more effective

local representation for South Walton. I think the time is

now for those who live in South Walton to begin to ad-

dress the issues unique to South Walton. Incorporation is

one of several options we are looking at,” said Rausch-

kolb.

ABSW invites a robust discussion of the results of the

study. The series of meetings planned for September and

October will be advertised and posted on our website

with dates, times and locations. Please see

www.abettersouthwalton.com for more information re-

garding the study, our mission and our core group as well

as an opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation. A

Better South Walton can be contacted at

This U.S. State Is Permitting

Muslims to Wear Burqas for

Driver License Photos…

Spread This

A drivers license is one of the most important identi-

fication tools we have in America. Replete with our

pertinent information and our photo, anything of a

sensitive nature that requires confirming our physical

identity usually also involves checking our drivers

license (except, of course, voting).

Now, in the name of political correctness, one of our

states wants to do away with this protection by al-

lowing religious garments in drivers license photos.

This can include headdresses or scarves — material

that would conceal part of the head or face that

would ordinarily not be allowed under law.

“What we’re doing was always allowed… but what

we want to ensure is that the public’s aware of them

because we were told that some individuals were

unaware that they could have their photo taken for

the drivers [sic] license wearing them [religious head

coverings],” Haupt said.

“We’re always mindful of the fact that we want to

communicate well with the public.” (H/T Mad

World News)

They’re not so mindful, however, about the right

of law enforcement and other agencies to know the

identity of the person that they’re dealing with.

That’s one of the points of a drivers license, after all.

It’s all about identification

and safety. It has nothing to do

with religious sensitivities, and the

safety of Americans oughtn’t be

compromised because of a silly

experiment in political correctness.

Dangerous Foods for Dogs Who can resist those big brown

eyes and cute doggie grin? Can a little reward from the table really hurt

your dog? Well, that depends on what it is and what's in it. A chip with

guacamole can cause your dog some real problems. In fact, there's a lot of

"people food" your dog should never eat. And, it's not just because of

weight. Some foods are downright dangerous for them -- and some of

these common foods may surprise you.

Avocado No matter how good you think the guacamole is, you

shouldn't give it to your dog. Avocados contain a substance called

persin. It's harmless for humans who aren't allergic. But large amoun

Alcohol Beer, liquor, wine, foods containing alcohol -- none of it's

good. That's because alcohol has the same effect on a dog's liver and

brain that it has on humans. But it takes far less to do its damage.ts

might be toxic to dogs Onions and Garlic Onions and garlic in

all forms -- powdered, raw, cooked, or dehydrated -- can destroy a

dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia. That can happen even with

the onion powder found in some baby food. Coffee, Tea, and

Other Caffeine Caffeine in large enough quantities can be fatal.

And there is no antidote. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning include rest-

lessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, muscle tremors, fits, and

bleeding Grapes and Raisins Grapes and raisins have often

been used as treats for dogs. But it's not a good idea. Although it isn't

clear why, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure. And just a

small amount can make a dog ill. Milk and Other Dairy

Products On a hot day, it may be tempting to share your ice cream

cone with your dog. But if he could, he'd thank you for not doing so.

Milk and milk-based products can cause diarrhea and other digestive

upset Macadamia Nuts Dogs shouldn't eat macadamia nuts or

foods with them because they can be fatal. As few as six raw or

roasted macadamias can make them ill. Symptoms of poisoning in-

clude muscle tremors, weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters,

Candy and Gum Candy, gum, toothpaste, baked goods, and some diet

foods are sweetened with xylitol. It can cause more insulin to circulate

through your dog's body. That can cause his blood sugar to drop and

can also cause liver failure. Chocolate Most people know that

chocolate is bad for dogs. The toxic part is theobromine. It's in all

kinds of chocolate, even white. The most dangerous kinds, though, are

dark chocolate, chocolate mulch, and unsweetened baking chocolate

Fat Trimmings and Bones Table scraps often contain meat fat

that a human didn't eat as well as bones. Both are dangerous for dogs.

Today, ‘Stansberry says the next big financial

panic in America will be even bigger than

what we experienced in 2007-2008.

In fact, he says this looming crisis will

threaten your way of life, even if you don’t

have any money in the markets.

This collapse, says Stansberry, will change

everything about our normal way of life:

where you vacation… where you send your

you shop… the way you protect

Greetings from the mayor’s office…..

The council has begun workshops for the 2015-16 budgets and are

working very hard to have completion prior to the beginning of the

fiscal year October 1.

The council is also working on a CIP/Master Plan for City Buildings/

Facilities & Property and a Strategic Plan and Restructuring of City

Council Responsibilities. A Senior Citizen Program will begin here in

Freeport on September 16, 2015 and information will be forthcoming

in the near future. Just returned from the Florida League of Cities

Conference in Orlando last week attending seminars to help with in-

formation of how we can improve the city, I was also asked by the

league to participate on a panel for the success of small cities and I

learned a lot from others on the panel who had successful ideas for

their cities, I gave them an incite of Freeport and its continued growth

promoting job opportunities and convenience. Applications have been

made for two positions within the city one for a Fiscal Services Clerk

and the other a Utility Supervisor. The field of applicants were

narrowed down and interviews were given to the top candidates and

at this writing no clear applicants have been identified to begin work.

We are continuing the process for some renovation to the community

center and we hope work can begin within the next two weeks. One

last meeting for the committee for Bayfest 2015 will take place on

September 10th and then it all begins on September 19th, please spread

the word and mark your calendars. Also again the annual Mayor’s

Charity Ball plans are underway for this event to take place on Oct.

24th, at the Hammock Bay Lake Club and this is an event you do not

want to miss, not only is it a fun event with food, entertainment and

silent auction and the proceeds are for a worthwhile cause helping

with the giving of food and holiday gifts to the less fortunate in our

area. Tickets will go on sale at the Bayfest. The land is cleared for

the new Shops of Freeport (Publix) and now the next step is getting

ready to move forward. I was on facebook last week asking for

volunteers to help with the Heritage Center and we could still use

some help in that area, please give us a call at city hall, 850-835-2822

for information. The children are back in school so please drive

careful and be safe. Any questions or concerns please give me a call

or drop by city hall and remember our meetings are the second Tues-

day and fourth Thursday of each month beginning at 7:00 PM.

IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson

Dies From Head Injury

Sustained During Race

IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has died from a head

injury he sustained in a race over the weekend, racing

officials announced Monday evening.

"Anyone who follows our sport knows Justin is one

of the most highly respected people in our business.

He will be missed," IndyCar CEO Mark Miles said in

announcing Wilson's death.

"He was a great guy, one of the few, if only, guys

who was friend of everyone in the paddock," said

Florida Earns a B- for Small Business Friendliness, Improves in 2015 Survey Texas, New Hampshire, and Utah top rankings in Thumbtack annual Small Business Friendliness

Survey; New York and California are among the least friendly states

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Small business owners strongly approve of Florida's tax regulations but

find the state a challenging location to start a business, according to Thumbtack’s annual Small Busi-

ness Friendliness Survey. Complete results for Florida will be published at https://

www.thumbtack.com/fl/.

Nearly 18,000 U.S. small business owners responded to the survey, including 1709 in Florida. The

study asked respondents to rate their state and city governments across a broad range of policy factors.

Thumbtack.com then evaluated states and cities against one another along more than a dozen metrics.

“Small business owners on Thumbtack have consistently told us that they welcome support from their

governments, but are frequently frustrated by unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles,” said Jon Lieber,

Chief Economist of Thumbtack. “Florida's small businesses like the tax climate in the state but report

there is a lot of room for improvement if the state wants to be more appealing to entrepreneurs.”

“Fees and taxes to start a business are high and registration requirements are excessive,” commented a

photographer in Jacksonville. “Enforcement of these regulations for those who don't comply is almost

nil, thus putting others in my profession who do comply and pay the fees and taxes at an unfair

position.”

Key Findings for Florida:

Florida performed better in 2015 than it did in 2014, when it ranked #23 and earned a C+ overall.

Florida's best scores included an A grade for its tax regulations and B grades for health, labor, and

environmental regulations.

Sarasota, FL was the highest ranking city in Florida with a B+ for overall friendliness, while the low-

est ranked city, Port St. Lucie, finished with a C grade overall.

Florida's worst scores were C grades for ease of hiring and for training and networking programs.

Neighboring Georgia earned an overall friendliness score of an A and ranked #9 nationally.

Key Drivers of Business Friendliness and warranty your work for quality:

Licensing was again more important than taxes - When evaluating their cities, small businesses said

the ease of compliance with licensing rules mattered far more than tax rates. Tax equity - the actual rate

at which business owners pay taxes - mattered far less than any measure of regulatory compliance. For

example, labor rules were 88 percent more important in driving state friendliness scores when compared

to tax rates.

Effective licensing was just as friendly as no licensing - Small business owners who found licensing

compliance to be “very easy” were just as favorable towards their city governments as respondents who

weren’t required to be licensed at all. By contrast, licensed professionals in cities with complicated

requirements or inconsistent enforcement reported the lowest approval rates.

Training experience was the top factor in both state and city rankings - Offering training on devel-

oping a business and navigating the local economic and policy environment was the single biggest fac-

tor that influenced perceptions of friendliness. In cities, training was 78 percent more important than the

number two factor. On the state level, small businesses who had a positive training experience were 1.5

times more likely to rate their states as being very supportive.

High quality websites matter - Investing in a high quality, easy-to-use website that provides useful

information and decreases the costs of regulatory compliance improves overall perceptions of a local or

state government. Business owners who said their city had a “great” website ranked their cities 13 per-

cent higher, while there was no difference in the rankings of business owners who were either unaware

of or had had a bad experience on city websites.

Survey Methodology Thumbtack surveyed 17,633 small businesses across the United States. The

36-question survey asked about the friendliness of states and cities toward small business, includ-

ing specific questions about the regulatory environment for labor, tax, and licensing rules.

Thumbtack evaluated states and cities against one another along more than a dozen metrics. Respon-

dents to the survey were largely very small service businesses with five or fewer employees. Every state

in the country was represented, although only states with more than 50 responses and cities with more

than 30 responses were given a grade.

Visit https://www.thumbtack.com/blog/2015-friendliness/ for information about survey methodology.

enced local professionals to help them accomplish more than 5 million personal projects each year.

Healthmark Health Matters Putting up with shingles Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. Although shingles can

occur anywhere on the body, it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters

that wraps around either the left or the right side of the torso.

According to researchers at Mayo Clinic, shingles is caused by the varicella-

zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a bout of chicken-

pox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near the spinal cord and brain. Years

later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. The reason for the encore is unclear,

but it may be due to lowered immunity to infections as we grow older. Shin-

gles is more common in older adults and in people who have weak immune

systems.

While it isn't a life-threatening condition, shingles can be very painful. Vac-

cines can help reduce the risk of shingles, while early treatment can help

shorten a shingles infection and lessen the chance of complications.

There's no cure for shingles, but prompt treatment with prescription antiviral

drugs can speed healing and reduce your risk of complications. These medica-

tions include: acyclovir (Zovirax), valacyclovir (Valtrex) and famciclovir

(Famvir). Numbing agents, such as lidocaine, delivered via a cream, gel, spray

or skin patches may also be prescribed.

I’m sure these road-way

contractors know what they

doing. However, I am tired of

driving on uneven wavy roads

that only get worse when a

storm passes through.

Along the side of Rock Hill

Rd. expansion, down by the

331 Bridge?

I now that FDOT can treat

us with a better smoother safer

road to drive on while they

scuffle about trying to get the

Highway paved so they can

move on northward.

You would almost think that

the police or sheriff would real-

ize too that it is an “unsafe

hazard” , it’s not like the road

fell out and washed away even

then it would be better.

How about we collect toll

from Alabama border to just

north of DeFuniak Springs?

That would allow us residential

residents to roam freely, on

paved roads, yet collect income

from out of state folks to main-

tain this Highway 331.

Paid for by all the tourist who

visit us each year. I like the

idea. Would a commissioner or

someone with “authoritive

knowledge” write in, please.

That is one way “ALL” of

the south end of Walton county

does, on “outsiders” income.

They have so much excess

be long before the will want to

many?

Thanks Frank, I hope this can

Betty– Ann Mozier

CEO arrested on charges of fraud

and corruption -

Snopes.com editor attacks messenger, shoots pianist, leading police to

discovery of corrupt and fraudulent

practices inside the organization.

- Snopes.com owners Barbara and David

Mikkelson were detained by police today

after an unrelated investigation of

a Snopes.com editor lead police onto a paper

trail of corruption, bribery, and fraud at the

very heart of the fact-checking organization.

Evidence obtained by police has revealed

that Snopes.com, which markets itself as

"the definitive Internet reference source for

urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and

misinformation," has a history of accepting

money and favors from left-leaning and pro

-Islamic political groups and individuals for

helping them to advance their cause by

rigging public discourse with selective

fact-finding and deliberate manipulation of

public opinion. Late Monday, Brian Williston,

a Snopes.com editor, who also doubles as the

accountant, found himself at a flea market on

the outskirts of Los Angeles. As he was

browsing the different tables and tents look-

ing for antiques, an old mechanical piano

began playing Dixie's Land, a song that was

adopted as a de facto anthem of the Confed-

eracy during the American Civil War and is

now considered offensive by some due to its

link to the iconography and ideology of the

Old South.

The tune sparked an outrage in Williston,

who began yelling and cursing those who

"would like to bring back slavery and racial

separation," and ordering the vendors to "turn

off that racist music." When no one nearby

claimed to know how to turn off the one-

hundred-year-old machine, Williston became

violent. He started grabbing various antique

objects from the vendors' tables and throwing

them at the antique piano in an attempt to

silence the music.

A bystander, , attempted to calm Williston

down, saying that "someone is just trying to

see if that the piano still works" and "it's only

a song, don't shoot the pianist," but that only

prompted the infuriated editor to redirect his

rage to the messenger. Shut it OFF. People

paying Snopes.com to debunk stories that

cast them in a bad light, while validating it.

lead in the Palmetto State.

A Monmouth University poll out Tuesday finds Donald

Trump leading among South Carolina Republicans with

30% support, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben

Carson at 15%. No other candidates register in double

digits.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has sparred

repeatedly with Trump in recent weeks, is well behind at

4%.

Reacting on Twitter to the latest survey showing his

strong standing in the 2016 race, Trump wasn’t exactly

magnanimous — not that you’d expect anything less.

Graham fired back at Trump Tuesday, including his lat-

est attacks on Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, saying on Fox

News Radio that “If you think Megyn Kelly is a bimbo,

you’re an idiot.”

He said of Trump’s remarks: “If that’s OK, you better

accept the consequences of that being OK because we

are going to lose!”

PRESIDENT TRUMP? “Mexican,

Chinese military officials report unauthorized breach

of air space by U.S. F/A-18 fighter jets.” That's what

the Washington Free Beacon predicts will be the

news out of the Trump inauguration. Another satiri-

cal press release envisages “loser,” “dummy” and

“moron” replacing the usual diplomatic language out

of the State Department. Former Obama speechwriter

Jon Lovett imagines it all ending with a “budget cri-

sis, President Trump’s impeachment [and] Vice

President Cruz’s inauguration.” Is this really the fu-

ture that awaits us under president Trump?

Probably not.

As much as Trump likes to project an aura of some-

one who plays by his own rules and always gets his

way, once in the Oval Office he would be just an-

other politician, bound by the laws of political grav-

ity. He may want to break some china, literally and

figuratively. But in his first 100 days, the constitu-

tional constraints of the office would become appar-

ent, and the fears of instantaneous disaster would

dissipate.

A few expected initial moves would rattle some

cages. Trump would rescind President Obama’s ex-

ecutive actions providing deportation relief to un-

documented immigrants, satisfying his base while

sparking outcry from immigrant advocates. And you

can expect the Trump Treasury Department to label

China a currency manipulator, a legal precursor to

imposing new tariffs popular with working class

Americans and manufacturing chiefs but opposed by

other CEOs who rely of cheap Chinese goods.

Those are actions solely within the purview of the

executive branch. What Trump could not do at the

point of a finger is undo Obama’s policies estab-

lished by the formal regulatory process. Trump may

think that global warming is a hoax, but he can’t

wipe the EPA’s carbon rules off the books without

undergoing a laborious regulatory process of his

own. Even then he could be stymied by environmen-

talist lawsuits charging him with violating the Clean

Air Act.

Trump has also expressed reluctance for abrupt shifts

in foreign policy. On NBC’s Meet The Press earlier

this month, he shied away from abandoning Obama’s

nuclear deal with Iran: “It's very tough to do when

you say, ‘Rip up a deal.’ Because I'm a deal person.”

Though he assured viewers, “I will police that deal.”

Presumably that logic would apply not only to the

Iran deal but also the Trans-Pacific Partnership that

he also loathes, should that trade agreement be final-

ized. His ability to “police” the Iran deal is highly

contingent upon the efforts of the International

Atomic Energy Agency inspectors. On trade, how-

ever, he could build on Obama’s strategy of stepped

up prosecution of World Trade Organization rules

against China and aggressively employ the dispute

mechanisms in TPP.

Of course there’s a possibility of him doing some-

thing truly rash like start a new war or let the fight

against ISIL spiral out of control; he often speaks of

seizing or bombing Iraqi oil fields, a move that could

The Disappearance

of Books

By Rian Lyday

“A book is a dream that you hold in your

hand.”

–Neil Gaiman My job, as a Literacy Coach, has made me realize

how much people do not read anymore. I am going to

give you the top 10 reasons why picking up a good

book every now and then will improve your life.

1. Mental Stimulation: Studies have shown that stay-

ing mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or

possibly even prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia,

since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents

it from losing power. Just like any other muscle in the

body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and

healthy, so the phrase “use it or lose it” is particularly

apt when it comes to your mind.

2. Stress Reduction: No matter how much stress you

have at work, in your personal relationships, or count-

less other issues faced in daily life, it all just slips

away when you lose yourself in a great story. A well-

written novel can transport you to other realms, while

an engaging article will distract you and keep you in

the present moment, letting tensions drain away and

allowing you to relax.

3. Knowledge: Everything you read fills your head

with new bits of information, and you never know

when it might come in handy—knowledge can never

be taken from you.

4. Vocabulary Expansion: Being articulate and well-

spoken is of great help in any profession, and knowing

that you can speak to higher-ups with self-confidence

can be an enormous boost to your self-esteem.

5. Tranquility: In addition to the relaxation that ac-

companies reading a good book, it’s possible that the

subject you read about can bring about immense inner

peace and tranquility. Reading spiritual texts can

lower blood pressure and bring about an immense

sense of calm, while reading self-help books has been

shown to help people suffering from certain mood

disorders and mild mental illnesses.

Books are free…go to the library and take

advantage of the books available to check-

out.
