ABSTRACT
In mastering English, there are four skills to be learned by the students, they are; speaking, reading, writing, and listening. To get the goal of these four skills the component of English which is important to learn is vocabulary. Vocabulary is important to enhance the English achievement. In fact, the teacher needs a method to create good atmosphere in the class. Talking stick method is a variable that may influence the students’ vocabulary mastery. This research, intended to know the effectiveness of talking stick method toward the students’ vocabulary mastery of eighth grade in SMPN 2 Bantur Malang. Therefore, this research was conducted to verify the result of the research problem.
This research used quasi-Experimental research design because the researcher did not have authority to conduct randomly assign subject. For the purpose of collecting the data, 66 students were participated in this research and divided into two groups there are; experiment and control group for being a sample. Two kinds of test obtained to be the instrument, pretest and posttest. The data of this research gained by using SPSS(Statistic Product and Statistic Solution) 21 for windows computer program.
Based on the data analysis, the result of SPSS found that tobservedhigher than ttable(3.33>1.67). The effectiveness of talking stick method makes the students feel confident, more active and also interested to take a part in the teaching and learning process. The students were not shy anymore because all of them going to take part on it. The effectiveness of talking stick method also motivate them to join the teaching and learning process. In addition, Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Hi) was accepted.
