One Moment in Movement

All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment important, vital, and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused. – Martha Graham

The Q is a place for quotes. It’s a place for insights and perspectives and viewpoints—oftentimes an assortment of them. Here I’ve zeroed in on one beloved quote because, after countless re-readings, I’ve suddenly discovered that the word movement contains the word moment.

This piece, then, is a very brief reflection about moments and movement, sparked by the ideas of Martha Graham, the impact of a Paul Taylor Dance Company concert, and one very fundamental Edu-K concept.

Paul Taylor danced with Martha Graham, and shared many of the same creative values. However, where Graham illuminated emotion through sheer physicality, Taylor studied the simplicity of human actions: walking, sitting, running, and standing. In his early choreography, Paul Taylor shocked audiences and critics alike when he placed a performer onstage, unmoving. He magnified those moments without “letting them slip away unnoticed.”

As human beings with hectic schedules, we simply cannot capture and magnify every single moment of our lives. So we keep moving. And, as part of the Edu-K community, we know that “moving” can have transformative power. Yet we also understand that sometimes the transformation comes when we take the moment to stop and notice where we are and what we feel.

I can picture Martha Graham talking to her dancers when she first spoke those three sentences; I aspire to use those same words as a daily practice. What a gift it would be to recognize the moment inside each movement—and every stopping point—as truly “important, vital and worth living.”

A Brain Gym Story

Book Review

What if you could learn faster, more effectively, retain the information longer, and access it easily – no matter what?

Learn Faster. Manage Information Better. Recall Information More Accurately.

Nancy Tilton Hand, is an attorney, author, and trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. She trains attorneys, mediators, and professionals in the essential practice skills of information management, communication, and negotiation.

Her latest book, “Beyond Rainmaking: Accelerated Learning Techniques for Law School, The Bar Exam, and Beyond”, is the result of over 29 years of research. It contains the secrets to successfully managing massive amounts of information. For students, the book contains essential practice skills that will

immediately enhance information management and test taking performance. In addition, these skills can boost performance on both final exams and the bar exam.

At 15 years old, Nancy experienced a traumatic brain injury that left her highly dyslexic and without a sense of smell. Determined to overcome the setback, Nancy re-learned how to learn. The techniques that she discovered on her path to recovery enabled her to graduate

from college cum laude and pass the Louisiana Bar Exam on the first try. She did this despite skipping a code section and only studying the bar review books 3-4 hours a day. In Beyond Rainmaking, she shows you how to do it, too.

Everybody wants to pass the bar exam on the first try, but roughly 30,000 people fail the bar exam every year, at great expense. There is only a 67% pass rate for the bar exam. The information in Beyond Rainmaking can dramatically increase the likelihood of a student passing the bar exam on the first try.

Beyond Rainmaking showcases the most effective accelerated learning techniques. Nancy delivers them with the humor, compassion, and practicality honed in her career as a lawyer, trainer, and coach. She draws on her personal expertise, scientific research, and real-life experiences to create compelling and easy-to-read material. Her words resonate with the new generation of lawyers and professionals who need a competitive advantage in today’s workforce.

“My GPA improved 1/2 point despite having to work 20 hours a week! Your book can be a great hope for law students.” Billy, Temple Law School

“This is my new bible for effective learning and working, even though I am not a law student. Fantastic lecture, hands on, short and to the point, and I love the diversity of approaches to get focused and retain information.” Ingrid Dinter

A participant shared the following three months after attending a Brain Gym Introduction:

I was working in a manufacturing shop about 13 years ago. One day I was required to inspect parts using a microscope. Near the end of the day, when I looked up, my right eye was stuck pointing at my nose. The reaction of the men I was working with was kind of funny; they were afraid to tell me. I didn't think much of it at first. I thought it would straighten itself out. But the years went by and it didn't. Over the years, I have seen five different eye doctors and none of them gave me any hope at all, besides glasses, which didn't correct the problem. So, I said a prayer and soon after I was required by my current employer to attend a Brain Gym introduction. I wasn't excited. During the class, we did Brain Buttons. I couldn't do it, for whatever reason. You used the words “reset” and I guess something clicked for me. So I kept trying and found that if I could follow a horizontal line I could do it. I think it corrected my eye almost immediately. I have my peripheral vision back and of course my balance is much improved.

I stopped looking at my eyes years ago because they looked so odd. Now I think I have pretty eyes, thanks to you. Not many people have noticed, but one little girl asked me if I got new glasses. I told her no, but the next day she told me that she liked my new glasses. Funny girl. After talking to you last week, my employer said something about me turning into a social butterfly. I explained to her what Brain Buttons has done for me. Before, I would avoid eye contact with everyone and tried really hard to position myself so that I wouldn't have to be face to face with anyone. She is very happy for me and yet, admits that she can't do Brain Button either. I think after seeing what it has done for me, she is trying to make it work for her.

So last week I felt compelled to tell you what a huge difference you've made in my life. And I also used something I learned from you to help a 10 month old baby girl get mobile. She would just sit on the floor until I started massaging her big toe and helping her to stand. I'm happy to say that she is crawling all over the place and is very hard to contain. She wants to explore and I'm able to watch her with both eyes.

Again, thank you for doing what you do, it was absolutely life changing for me and I think you are awesome to take the time to teach people what you know.

Opportunities Abound!

Kelsey Fox Bennett - founder of Inner Art Creations & trainer in Brain Gym® - and Ballard C. Boyd - commercial & documentary director have been invited to West Africa to empower two schools through Brain Gym and Movement Based Learning training with the intentions of:

1) Accelerating learning and healing for the students;

2) Producing two short documentaries to aid in international awareness of the schools.

The schools Kelsey and Ballard will be visiting are:

More Than Me, a non-profit organization that takes young girls off the streets of the poorest slums in Liberia and puts them into a school system. They currently educate over 100 girls between the ages of four & seventeen.

Christ Family Academy, an elementary school in Ghana which educates and feeds over 400 students, many of whom can't afford to attend, but who are still taken in, fed, and educated.
