T HE E DIFIER Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and the things wherewith one may edify another (Rom. 14:19) Walnut Street Church of Christ Volume 50 October 25, 2020 Number 42 Word at Walnut Street Bryan McAlister The What do Christians do when the landscape around them is filled with political, social, and moral corruption, with no real solution being sought, only division being spread? To what do Christians appeal when we look upon the nature of our leaders, or those desiring to be, and we look upon them in dismay? Or worse, we look upon them with favoritism or even fanaticism? If we look upon political figures, they are corrupt, dishonest and scandal and controversy follows them in every step of their day. One party’s political figure is accused of scandals, corruption, and coverup through coercion and deceit, just to get to a deeper hold of power. Immorality surrounds the political figure and not just in their own life, but in the life of their family. Their ambivalence to preserving order was captured through one story that when an entire city was under siege and burning, this one dismissed the event as a trivial matter, almost as if to say, “What difference does it make?” On the other side, another political figure of the same land, looks equally unappealing. While taking a stand against social and moral issues, the life of this one is anything but a moral compass. If some do not agree with this one’s adopted positions, then the opponents are merely dismissed, sometimes in scandalous ways, or at a minimum they are made a mockery of in front of their peers in detestable ways. Under both, Christianity struggled to find an identity, because in all good and honest conscience, Christianity could not find peace or prosperity under either. In fact, their struggle only increased to have their identity and their investment in the Lord Jesus made known to others around them. If you’re not careful, hearing of these two individuals and their exploits you might be led to believe we’re speaking of a battle between Biden vs. Trump. In truth, this is a matter of history, one that has already unfolded and one that has already impacted the life and heart of believers in Christ, some 2,000 years ago. These rulers and the descriptions were Nero and Domitian, and their reign and rule came to power during the days when John would write to the Christians he knew in a time of social, political, moral, and religious upheaval. John begged them, pleaded with them, not to let go and not to surrender their faith for the sake of the world around them and the popularity of giving in to following the crowd. “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (I John 2:15-17). If you’re placing your ultimate hope in anything other than Jesus Christ, to elevate your life, preserve your posterity, or secure your peace, your chosen vessel of hope is empty. Perhaps in a time such as now, we can be motivated to cut the tethers to this world and secure our hope and victory in Jesus. What do Christians do when the landscape around them is filled with political, social, and moral corruption, with no real solution being sought, only division being spread? To what do Christians appeal when we look upon the nature of our leaders, or those desiring to be, and we look upon them in dismay? Or worse, we look upon them with favoritism or even fanaticism?

If we look upon political figures, they are corrupt, dishonest and scandal and controversy follows them in every step of their day. One party’s political figure is accused of scandals, corruption, and coverup through coercion and deceit, just to get to a deeper hold of power. Immorality surrounds the political figure and not just in their own life, but in the life of their family. Their ambivalence to preserving order was captured through one story that when an entire city was under siege and burning, this one dismissed the event as a trivial matter, almost as if to say, “What difference does it make?”

On the other side, another political figure of the same land, looks equally unappealing.

John

begged them, pleaded with them, not to let go and not to surrender their faith for the sake of the world around them and the popularity of giving in to following the crowd.
