The EastcoNet 2 18th April 2020

It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our erstwhile Past Masters, Dominic

Bann, has finally succumbed to chronic debilitating illness and passed away at home, peacefully,

on the morning of the 4th April in the presence of his beloved wife Ursula. Oddly enough, it was

NOT the Corona Virus that caused his death but one of those “underlying conditions” that we hear

so much about in these troubling times. However, because of the extraordinary conditions that we

are all living under due to the Virus, there will be no funeral and funeral service, as there would

have been, in the normal scheme of things. Regrettably, Dominic will be cremated without any

family and friends being present. He deserves so much more! But, Ursula assures me that there

will be a Memorial Service for Dominic at some stage in the future when we, eventually, come

through the Corona Virus pandemic that is blighting our lives at the moment.

But, what of Dominic’s life which has been so colourful and extraordinary to say the least?

Dominic was born in the 20th century; on the 4th August 1935 to be exact, in a place called

Habbanyja, Baghdad, Iraq.

He had hockey in his blood and a hockey stick in his hands!

His father had gone to Iraq from India with the RAF and it was in Iraq that his father met and

married his mother who was an Assyrian Christian. Dominic has five brothers and one sister.

Three of his brothers survive him. He has two daughters, Dominique and Jasmine and one

granddaughter, Helen. His first Hockey Club in England was the International Friendship League!

Many other clubs were to follow!

His father was a fanatical player and very proud of his son who was fast following in his father’s footsteps. Dominic started out playing hockey in Iraq with his father and first picked up a stick at the age of 10. He used to carry his father’s sticks to matches. One thing led to another and his father started to teach him how to play and especially how to dribble the ball which is a rare skill in today’s hockey world!

Said Dominic “They put me on the left wing, and as everyone knows, you don't get many passes in that position - so, I ran for every ball that was even remotely heading in my direction!"

Dominic loved scoring goals from a very early age. Somebody once said to him”Dominic, if your mother was in the 'D' pleading for the ball, you'd still not pass the ball to her!” And Dominic replied “'You're damn well right!"

His father, who was stationed in Iraq with the RAF, would play hockey at weekends for the Air Ministry team.

This story is told in Dominic’s own words “One day, when I was 15, my father’s team were short of players and I was asked to play. I was put on the left wing because my dad didn’t want me to get hurt. I was this bandy, skinny-legged player in comparison to the well built RAF men. But I did score a goal!” And that was probably the first of hundreds of goals to follow

Page 3: The Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter - 64 Season Website · The EastcoNet 2 18th April 2020 It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our erstwhile Past Masters, Dominic

The Bann family were soon on the move, heading to Cyprus when his father was transferred to the RAF base in Nicosia.

“I played for the RAF team there regularly,” said Dominic. “I was the only civilian playing for them and I scored a lot of goals. At first the other teams didn’t want me playing because, they said, that I was not part of the RAF. But the Officers pulled rank and said “‘if he is not playing, then we are not playing’.” And the rest, as they say, is history.

Dominic (ctr. right) as a young man playing in the RAF v Army game in Cyprus

After enjoying much success in Cyprus, Dominic and his family moved to Southend in 1959 and one of his first missions was to find a hockey club. But hockey in England proved to be something of a culture shock for Dominic. In Cyprus, Dominic was used to playing hockey on Tarmac.

"After Cyprus I came to live in Basildon, but there weren't any hockey clubs in the town at that time. So, I went to live in Westcliff and joined Southend Hockey Club." He turned up for his first game in his nice, white tennis shoes while all his team mates were wearing football boots. Said Dominic “Everyone looked at me and said ‘have you never played on grass before?’ I hadn’t!”

It didn’t take long for Dominic to adapt to the new surface, however. He made it into Southend’s first team after his first season and, now an established attacker, became one of the most feared players around.

Page 4: The Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter - 64 Season Website · The EastcoNet 2 18th April 2020 It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our erstwhile Past Masters, Dominic

The EastcoNet 4 18th April 2020

In 1962, Dominic was Southend Hockey Club's top scorer with 53 goals. “I scored 156 goals in one other year,” he said. “I had got used to playing on grass by then and there were some good players around me.”

Comment from one of his opponents: No matter where he was in the D, he knew where the goal was and he could score as easily with the back of his stick, as he could with the correct side. This was borne out on one occasion when the opponents claimed “back stick!” as Dom put the ball in the net. A well-known umpire at the time said “you all know it was back stick, I know it was back stick, but I didn’t SEE it! Goal given!”

Southend has produced its fair share of hockey players for the national squads - most notably Richard Clarke and his son, Jonty

Dominic has played with three generations of the Clarke family, a proud claim to fame: "When I first came, Brian Clarke was playing and we also used to play against a Southend High School and Brian's son Richard was playing - he went on to be an Indoor International. Then one day, when I was with Westcliff, we had a Westcliff versus Old Southendians match and I saw this young kid running around on the wing, he was very fast and it was Jonty." Said Dominic With rising ambition, Dominic switched to Westcliff Hockey Club and had many more years of success there alongside some great players such as the GB Star John French.

Olympian, John recalls that he first played against Dominic when playing mixed hockey for Hornchurch HC in about 1964, and can remember how

seriously he took the game. This never changed in all the years we knew him.

But in the early 1990’s Westcliff were on the wane because they did not have an Astro Pitch and Dominic was looking for another club where he could play his beloved hockey. He chose Eastcote Hockey Club in Middlesex and had to travel great distances to take part in the sport he loves.

Page 5: The Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter - 64 Season Website · The EastcoNet 2 18th April 2020 It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our erstwhile Past Masters, Dominic

But a little before joining Eastcote he was invited to join the embryonic LX club which, as its name suggests, was a club for players over 60 years of age. Over several international tournaments Dominic established himself as their top scorer against the likes of teams from Germany, Holland, Australia and Belgium

After a few years LX were given the privilege of representing England at the Over 60’s level. At this point Dominic reached the zenith of his hockey career. In 1995 Dominic was selected to play for the England over 60’s team and that’s when his International career began. After many successful campaigns he represented England at the 2004 World Cup in the Athens Olympics Stadium where he won the Silver Cup for being the top goal scorer in the Games.

"It was great playing hockey in Athens,” said Dominic. “Everyone says the over 60s is a 'Slow game' or 'Walking with three sticks!', but it's a good standard and I enjoyed it," he said.

By this point, however, Dominic was already a world champion.

He was called up again to the England Masters team for the over-60s and helped his team beat the old enemy Australia in the 1997 World Cup final.

It sparked a long run of international caps for Dom, with his most recent coming in the Hannover Masters tournament, just eight months after his heart bypass operation in December 2013!

“I’ve had some wonderful times,” he said. “I’ve scored 166 goals for England which is a record and I’ve been all over the world. I’ve beaten Australia in the World Cup final and in 2004 played a World Cup on the Olympic pitches in Athens when we lost to Germany on penalties in the final.”

Page 6: The Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter - 64 Season Website · The EastcoNet 2 18th April 2020 It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our erstwhile Past Masters, Dominic

The EastcoNet 6 18th April 2020

Dominic loved to score goals and this is his own tally of goals scored by him during his playing career: When playing for the LX Club and for England he scored a total of 162 goals in 98 games. And he scored at least one goal in 78 of those games! In Club Hockey, from 1960 to 2005, he scored 1050 goals with the various clubs he played for. From this information you could probably glean what Dominic did for a living – Accountancy!

Of course, he carried on playing after 2005 for several years and scored umpteen more goals. But those goals were not recorded.

Given his passion for his sport, it was no surprise that Dominic wanted to make sure his heart operation in 2013 was not the end of his playing career.

“As soon as I had the operation I was determined to get back fit again and play.”

Incredibly, he was back playing for his new club, Eastcote, in north London, just three months after his operation.

Dominic joined Eastcote, in Middlesex, in the early 1990’s after a glittering career playing for

Southend, Westcliff, The LX Club, London Indians and Old Southendians.

He played for Eastcote’s famous Vintage Team which is now known as the Past Masters. His brand of hockey was greatly appreciated and admired by the many skilful players at Eastcote and he fitted in well. He helped the Vintage Team at Eastcote to win three HA Vintage Cups in 1996, 97 and 1998, to appear in two further Finals and to win the Plate trophy in the early 2000's. Even further, he travelled with Eastcote to numerous European Vintage tournaments in Belgium, Holland and Germany where he also starred in several Finals and winning several more Cups and medals with the Eastcote Vintage Team. And Dominic was always supported by Ursula in his travels across the world playing his beloved hockey, despite the fact that hockey didn’t appeal to her very much.

He helped to establish Eastcote as the most successful Vintage Team in all of Europe and the team to beat if success was to be achieved.

At a more modest level Dominic made himself available to play in the Veterans London League for his new club, Eastcote, and travelled extra long distances from Southend to the far flung regions of the London league clubs, week in and week out, without demur. It was striking how many people he knew and who knew him. He had made many friends during his many years plying his trade as a supreme hockey player who always played to win. He had no enemies in the hockey world but there were many opponents who had just cause to regret coming up against Dominic on the hockey pitch. Despite his silky skills Dominic was a fighter and didn’t give an inch on the pitch.

On one occasion he was charged down by the opposing keeper when he was about to score. He jumped up and rugby tackled the unsuspecting keeper pinning him to the floor, pads and all, and threatening all sorts of dire consequences. The fact that the keeper was about 40 years younger than Dominic never even entered his mind. He was duly discharged from the pitch by yours truly – and so was the keeper!

Page 7: The Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter - 64 Season Website · The EastcoNet 2 18th April 2020 It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our erstwhile Past Masters, Dominic

The EastcoNet 7 18th April 2020

When asked about retirement, Dominic’s comment was “I love the sport and don’t really think of my age. It’s like they say, age is nothing but a number.”

But there was a lot more to Dominic than just his exploits on the hockey pitch. He was a devoted husband to Ursula. (And by the way, rumours that he went straight off for a game of hockey immediately after his wedding ceremony are greatly exaggerated! But he did play hockey on the two days that his daughters were born. It was not his fault that they chose to be born on a SATURDAY in season!)

And despite the latter comment he loved his two daughters, Dominique and Jasmine dearly and was always there for them whenever they needed him. His pride was very obvious whenever he spoke of them.

His only granddaughter, Helen is a superb swimmer. Dominique, Jasmine and Helen were all good hockey players at one stage in their lives but felt that one hockey superstar was sufficient for their family and took up other pursuits.

Dominic did excel in many other sports. Tennis, Athletics, Badminton, Table tennis, but not swimming. His favourite joke for Helen was, that he was a champion underwater walker. She gave up trying to teach him. He did, however win the Cyprus open tennis tournament in 1960. When he and Ursula visited the tennis club in 1990, many members still remembered him. He was that kind of person.

Away from sport there were many other facets to Dominic’s life

In his younger days he played the drums in several bands in the dance halls in and around Southend. He also crooned during his performances and I am reliably informed that he had the local girls swooning whenever his dulcet tones were heard rendering the strains of his favourite song “I did it my way” an old Sinatra standard!

In his days at Eastcote Dominic and Ursula were always invited to all the social functions that took place in our neck of the woods. From Summer BBQ’s and Dinner dances to House Parties. They were always at the top of the invitees list. And with good reason. They were very sociable, friendly and so easy to get along with. It’s a good thing that Dominic was a teetotaller because they had to drive many a mile to get to many of these functions and sometimes it was very late at night. They were an extremely generous couple as everybody, especially family and friends, who knew them, would readily testify.

We will miss you so very much Dominic. For those of us who knew you well you were one very special person. We are so sorry that we cannot be with you as you depart this world for, undoubtedly, greener pastures. You deserved so much more.

In writing this obituary or eulogy or tribute or call it what you will, for Dominic, I am hoping that Ursula, Dominique, Jasmine and Helen will get some comfort from realising just how highly Dominic was regarded not just in the hockey world but also in the world at large. He was very special!

The EastcoNet 8 18th April 2020

Finally, Dominic was one of the most intense players on the pitch but a true gentleman off it. It was truly a pleasure to know and play with him. He will be missed by many, many people across the County, Country and indeed the World. Wherever Dom is now, I am sure he will be playing in the first team and scoring more goals that ever and as ever, hungry to be given the ball! God Bless you Dom

A message from Ursula

Dominic enjoyed being at all the clubs where he played, but the one club he felt most at home was with all the players and their families at Eastcote. That was truly his home and the only reason he gave up playing for Eastcote was the distance and his failing health. In the end it proved too much. But he loved you all.

On these foundations, a community has been built.

You are cordially invited to join “The Cavendish Club” -

The Friends of Eastcote Hockey Club In 2007, the original Cavendish Club was set up. Targeted at present and former Men’s 1st XI players, this new club generated resources that were invested back into the future of Eastcote Hockey Clubs Men’s 1st team. At the same time, it provided a mechanism to ensure old friends and teammates could stay in touch. It was successful in generating income, organising popular dinners and provided funding to help the Men’s 1st XI. As we enter a new decade and to celebrate this unwavering support, we are re-launching The Cavendish Club* - a voluntary organisation open to all within the club be they player, umpire, coach, volunteer, parent or friend. It will generate funds aimed at supporting success for the two elite teams: the Men’s and Women’s 1st XI teams. This will be achieved through investment in playing and coaching performance throughout the club. As such, funds generated would only be used to enhance the playing success of the club and not for normal operational management. In order to join, we ask that you set up an annual standing order for a minimum of £20 to be paid to:

Eastcote Hockey Club Cavendish Club Account no: 10766372 Sort Code: 20-67-83

The Cavendish Club would love to hear your ideas and requests for funding; whether to support a child or adult progress both within the club and along the Player Pathway to representative levels, to support overseas and UK tours for player and team development, or to create new coaching academies for performance improvement. I am sure you will have many more exciting ideas so let us know! We are seeking a club member to lead this new initiative but in the mean time if you have any suggestions or questions please contact Jamie Nicholls ([email protected]).

I hope everyone is safe and well in these strange and challenging times. Coronavirus, in time, will fade into the background. There is nothing more precious than life itself. Some tips which I am following to get myself through each day Focus on one day at a time Keep to a routine Eat nutritious foods Find time to exercise moderately for at least 20 minutes a day Practise staying focused on the present moment Stay in touch with friends and loved ones by facetime, skype, WhatsApp and video conferencing Shout for help if you are struggling/feeling lonely, none of us need to deal with this alone. We need to accustom to a new way of life for a period of time. Limit news and social media to once a day, watch lighthearted entertainment. Gary and I can offer you video conference calls during this challenging period:

• 20-30 Min video consultations £15

• 20 min 1-2-1 Rehabilitation sessions where we will take you through the exercises that will help you to recover from injuries and improve strength.

• 20 min 1-2-1 Running Drill Sessions £20

• Small group circuits for up to 20 people, £5 per person

• 1-2-1 Yoga Sessions £40

• Group yoga Classes (up to 10 people per session) £8

• I will be setting more classes up, please contact me if you would like specific times and also check my website.

All you need for video conferencing is a smart phone, tablet or laptop with built in microphone & camera, about 2 metres space and light (a table lamp shined at or over your device works well enough). Do give us a call if you are struggling and we can talk you through, I am technically challenged and I am getting it to work. When the restrictions are lifted we will offer everyone who has taken advantage of the above a £10 discount off their first hands on treatment. Please contact us for more details and to arrange sessions: Gary : [email protected] 07947 759 903 Sharon: [email protected] 07711 945 186 www.yogaandsports.co.uk Stay safe, stay strong, look forwards to seeing you face to face in the future. Juniors Section

We will be publishing all the Junior Award Winners for the 2019/2020 season in the next newsletter as unfortunately we cannot hold our usual end of season event when these are announced. The coaching and admin team will start in preparation for the new season in September and we will bring you great hockey and great times again…very soon. Your existing TAP will be in touch with you over the coming weeks to let you know the plans for September. Thank you parents and players for being stars through the season.

But it’s now time to work on your fitness! The coaches would love their squads to work on fitness during this down time. Peter has the U14Boys are working hard and there is an invite to join them by following the Joe Wicks PE regime through till the next season. Coach Peter is going to try and get Joe to do a shout-out for Eastcote Juniors at some stage so join the teams at 9am each morning for a workout. The link is here...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6r99N3kXME And I hear that Andy has the U16 Boys working on skills too. Remember we have a great Facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/groups/eastcotepreownedhockeystuff/

We have a Facebook page for selling and donating unwanted hockey kit. Join this private community group for Eastcote Hockey Club members and parents to buy, sell, swap or find hockey equipment: • So, dust off those Astroturf shoes that don’t fit anymore, take a photo and pass them on… • Declutter the understairs cupboard and make some money from that old hockey stick… • Post a wanted ad to see if someone else might have club shirt their child has outgrown…

FIH Hockey Pro League matches against Argentina, China and India postponed

Further to the British Government and Public Health England's guidance around major sports events and international travel restrictions, regrettably Great Britain's FIH Hockey Pro League games against China/India at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on 2/3 May and Argentina at the Twickenham Stoop on 16/17 May have been postponed.

In accordance with the statement made by the FIH last Friday (13 March), should the situation change, we will work with China, India and Argentina to reschedule the fixtures.

All ticket buyers will receive a full refund. We will be communicating directly with affected ticket buyers by email over the coming days, and issuing refunds as soon as possible.

A decision about our remaining home fixtures against USA and Spain on 23/24 May and Germany on 13/14 June will be made no later than 15 April.

We share your disappointment that these matches cannot take place. We look forward to welcoming you back to our events in the future, at a time when we can all collectively enjoy watching top international hockey.
