Dear Friend of Annunciation Parish & School,

Happy Easter! These 50 Days of Easter provide a wonderful opportunity to high-

light the artistic talent of our Annuncia-

tion Catholic School students! April 7 was

the Opening Reception for the Young

Emerging Artist Exhibit at the Clifton

Cultural Arts Center, which is featuring

art work by our Annunciation Catholic

School students in Mrs. Kathy Chabot’s

art classes. It is a wonderful exhibit,

which showcases the talent of our students

and their teacher, Mrs. Chabot. The exhib-

it continues through April 28. View more

photos from the Opening Reception here.

And each of our classes, preschool-8th

grade, has made a beautiful creative ban-

ner for our weekly Thursday Morning

Easter Procession Easter Season prayer.

These banners illustrate the post-

resurrection appearances of Jesus to his disciples. The students were very creative in

designing their class banners. View the banners here.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sandi Chakeres

Director of Faith Formation

Annunciation Student Art!

Special points of interest:

Sunday, April 17 is the Fourth Sunday of

Easter, also known as “Good Shepherd Sun-

day”, and is the World Day of Prayer for

Vocations. Read Pope Francis’ 2016 Mes-

sage here.

Earth Day & Saint George

Pope Francis’ long-awaited Apostolic Exhortation on the

family, “Amoris Laetitia” (“The Joy of Love”), was pub-

lished April 8. You can download the document here.

“The Joy of Love”

It’s Happening at

Annunciation!

April 22nd is Earth Day , and it is therefore a good time to reflect on our care for our envi-

ronment. If you haven’t already done so, you might read Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the

environment, LAUDATO SI’, which was released May 24, 2015.

It is interesting to note that Christians of both the East and the West celebrate the Feast of

St. George on April 23rd. In fact, this feast day has been celebrated in Rome since the year

683. St. George was born in the 3rd century in what is now the country of Turkey. He was

probably a soldier or a knight, and was martyred in the early 4th century in Palestine.

There are many legends about St. George. One of the most prominent, as you can see from

this 18th century icon of the saint, is that he was said to have been a dragon-slayer. One

legend tells the story of a dragon who was causing havoc in a town because it wanted to be

fed. When the townspeople ran out of animals to feed the dragon, it wanted to eat the chil-

dren. The daughter of the local king dressed as a bride and offered herself to the dragon.

Fortunately, Saint George killed the dragon before it could eat the young woman. The sto-

ry goes on to say that George married the king’s daughter, and they served the roasted

dragon at their wedding banquet! In the Middle Ages, this story became a popular play,

where at the end, even the dragon came back to life, making it a wonderful Easter story!

Saint George is the patron saint of Greece, England, Portugal, and other locales. So

what is his connection with Earth Day? The name George has its origin in the ancient

Greek language: Geōrgios (Γεώργιος), from the noun geōrgos (γεωργός) "husbandman, farmer", a compound of gē (γῆ) "earth" and ergon (ἔργον) "work". Think of other similar words, such as geography and geology. Many countries cele-

brate Saint George’s Day with customs and traditions connected to the land and the environment. For example, in Lithua-

nia apples trees are planted on the feast of St. George to assure a bountiful crop. A special bread was also baked on this

day, and pieces of this bread were given to beggars, who would then pray for the animals. Even today in Lithuania, eggs

and money are offered on Saint George’s Day for the protection on the animals. Saint George is also the patron saint of

Boy Scouts!

IMPORTANT NEWS for 6th Grade Parents!!

SUBJECT: Tdap Booster & Meningococcal Vaccine (New Requirement)

Dear Parents/Guardians of 6th grade students, Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, the Ohio Department of Health School Immunization Requirements have been revised to include one dose of Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine to be administered before a student enters the seventh grade. Therefore, your current sixth grader will need to show proof of having received the Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine before they can return to school in the fall. Your child also requires a dose of Tdap to be administered before a student enters the seventh grade. This dose is intended to be administered as a booster dose for students who have completed the required doses of the initial series of DTaP/DT/Td. Therefore, your current sixth grader will also need to show proof of having received this booster dose (Tdap) before they can return to school in the fall. If your child received one dose of Tdap as part of the original series, another dose of Tdap will not be required. The Tdap can be given regardless of the interval since the last tetanus or diphtheria-toxoid containing vaccine. You are receiving this notice now to provide you with ample time to have your child immunized before the coming school year (2016-17) begins. Please contact your physician or health department to schedule an appointment or to receive a copy/proof that the vaccines have been administered. Thank you, C.Kammerer, RN, School Nurse
