Steven started working with clay ten years ago. Unsatisfied with the constraints of evening classes (and much to his mother’s dismay), he eventually stripped out the guest room of his Walthamstow home and installed a kiln to create his studio.

A couple of days spent at London Glassworks (which has sadly relocated from Blackhorse Road to Cambridgeshire) inspired him to explore kiln-formed glass alongside his ceramics. He now works with both materials.

Kiln-formed arts indulge Steven’s passion for science. The transformation inside the oven is so dramatic that knowing a little about the qualities of the materials before they go in helps predict what will emerge at the end. Throw in a sense of adventure and a bit of luck and the results are usually as desired - with the occasional surprise thrown in.

In ceramics, Steven works mainly in stoneware or porcelain paperclay. His inquisitive nature means that he likes to try different techniques and effects, rather than sticking to one particular style. Most of his designs stem from “I wonder what would happen if...” experimentation.

Slab-formed or extruded stoneware sculptural forms are a recurring theme, but he finds uniformity boring so work is usually produced in series of similar but not identical pieces.

Current projects include exploring how little the amount of glass is needed to produce a coherent and practical form

Steven lives and works in Walthamstow. A small selection of his work is on sale in both the Tokarska Gallery,163 Forest Road and Made in the ’Stow, Unit A5/A6, Wood Street Market, which showcases the work of local artists and designers.

On The last SATURDAY afternoon in November I dropped some extra copies of the Christmas

E List off with Nat at the Eat or Heat Christmas Fair in the Village. I promised to return later with my other half having eyed up Aura Rosa’s unbelievable cakes. As I turned into Orford Road on my way back home I ran headlong into a huge throng of people. It was amazing, the street felt like Oxford Street. Aside from those heading, many with buggies, to the Fair at St Mary’s Welcome Centre, there was a 30 foot queue of people waiting patiently to get into E17 Designers at the Asian Centre. The Pop Stop at no 39, loaded with pop up stripy awninged stalls, was ready to explode, and then there were similar crowds at Penny Fielding’s and the butchers’ and the pubs, everywhere was crammed... what was happening?

It really made me smile. So many parts of Walthamstow have been bubbling along quietly for so long, with people setting up great shops and businesses; often struggling to survive, but stirred on by a belief in the area, so it was fantastic to see such a sight that day. I hope similar things happened this Christmas with Wood Street and its growing collection of shops of course its indoor market. There are plans afoot at the St James Street end of the High Street where they are looking to create a similar vibe. I recently met with Fab and Fiona, part of a group who are looking for people to take part in the St James Big Local and help shape a vision for this great area. Please remember shopping from great independents isn’t just for Christmas! These early months of the new year are tough times for small shops so they deserve our continued support.

Talking of independents there has been excitement recently over a Thai restaurant vying for a place in the Arcade site. I for one absolutely love Thai food and by the 1,000+ signatures on the petition in support I’m not alone. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but in the meantime Walthamstow will no longer be totally Thai free, thanks to a new Asian pop-up kitchen called VEKU. They will be offering a variety of Asian cuisines but will start this month with a three course Thai menu on the 13th (with E17 pop-up) and then again on the 17th and 18th in various venues (see listings for venues).

Finally it’s not often that the names of Venice and Walthamstow are linked in the same breath, but the William Morris Gallery have achieved a great coup in staging the first UK showing of exhibits created by Turner prize winner, Jeremy Deller especially for last year’s Venice Biennale. Deller is a renowned installation artist whose work is often centred around political and socialist themes, with his most famous piece recreating a battle from 1984’s miners strike. I’m sure Mr Morris would approve. The show starts on the 18th.

The Walthamstow Arms (No, not a pub…)It’s pretty well- known that Walthamstow today forms part of the Borough of Waltham Forest within Greater London, but was once part of the county of Essex. Perhaps less widely known is that there was once a Borough of Walthamstow (1895-1965) which had its very own coat of arms, officially granted on the 6th December 1929. The best thing about the arms is that the main elements represent aspects of Walthamstow’s history.

The red sleeve, or maunch, at the lower half of the shield was an emblem of the Toni family. Ralph de Toni was the first Norman Lord of Walthamstow and the manor remained in the family’s hands until 1309. The anchors and the upper bird derive from the arms of the Monoux family. Sir George Monoux, city merchant and Lord Mayor of London was Lord of the Manor in 1514. He was also a generous benefactor whose

works included the founding of the Monoux School. Unusually, the background colour used here is red rather than the Monoux blue and the change is said to be a nod to the Maynard family, whose stag and talbot (the dog!) flank either side of the arms. The Maynards have been linked with Walthamstow since the seventeenth century, particularly Henry Maynard, who made generous bequests to the church, schools and the poor. The oak twig and wreaths may allude to Epping Forest, part of which lay within the Borough.

No obvious link ties the crown to Walthamstow’s history, and its inclusion merely alludes to civic government. Perhaps more recognisable to some, is the motto

“Fellowship is Life,” the words of William Morris, from A Dream of John Bull (1888). Morris’ connection with Walthamstow is widely known, with the William Morris Gallery on Forest Road (also formerly known as The Winns and Water House) being his childhood home.

When Walthamstow was incorporated into the Borough of Waltham Forest in 1965, the arms were superseded by the

rather more austere arms of the new Borough, which can be seen at various locations in the Borough, including the foundation stone of the Town Hall on Forest Road. However the arms of the Borough of Walthamstow can still be seen on the Hoe Street Central Parade building, completed in 1958.

So what brings a Hackey boy to Walthamstow? A bad woman! My girlfriend Lindsay has lived in Walthamstow for over 20 years, and I slowly moved in over a period of time. I’ve been based here for 7 years or so.

Tell us about Friday nights growing up. As a teenager, I’d go clubbing in Hackney and the West End. One of my musical loves (then and now) is Jazz Funk. I would go to clubs such as Global Village, Crackers and The 100 Club in the West End, and Flamingos in Hackney Wick. Clubbing in the early 80s was very different to today. We would all meet up about 9pm on a Friday night, and jump on the 38 bus to the West End. Just getting into a club was a challenge in itself, if you didn’t look the part, you weren’t getting in!

The DJs of the early 80s introduced me to the music that I still play today, Latin Jazz, Funk, Soul and Jazz Fusion – if you couldn’t dance you didn’t pull, enough said!

How did you discover those early dance crazes and music of the 30s and 40s? I found my love of Swing and Big Band music accidently. Coming from a West Indian household, I was surrounded by many different forms of music, from Reggae, Ska and a bit of Country from my parents, to the sounds of the day from Radio One. Mum and Dad also played old school tunes by artists such as Ray Charles, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald and I loved to watch them dance to the music – I was fascinated by the fact that Dad could spin Mum around and catch her by the hand with no effort.

25 years later, I went to Jitterbugs, a 40s swing club, and realised that I loved the songs my parents had played in my childhood, and that the dancing they had done was Jive. I was hooked!

You started dancing professionally relatively late in life. What happened? I’d actually stopped dancing in clubs in the early 90s, but happened to be in The Jazz Cafe in Camden for a birthday party in 1997. One of my friends knew Perry Louis, a DJ and dancer who runs a dance group called Jazzcotech. He saw me dancing to the Jazz Funk set being played, and asked me to come back to dance with the group the next weekend. From then on, I danced with the group

at The Jazz Cafe for nearly 10 years, and was lucky enough to meet some true jazz legends, such as John Lucien and Pharaoh Saunders. It was a great experience.

At the time you were a postman by day and dancer at night, how did that work out? I worked for the Post Office for 23 years – it was meant to be a stop gap job! Because I worked in the Distribution Centre and did late shifts, I could finish work at 10pm and still dance with the group later in the evening (most of our gigs didn’t start until midnight) and start my day job at lunchtime.

I went to Japan with Jazzcotech when they toured with the Count Basie Orchestra in 2004. I also danced at Glastonbury one year, and have performed at numerous gigs in Europe. In 2008 I decided to leave the Post Office and teach dance.

Tell as about some of the events you organise locally. I run regular Jive and Lindy Hop classes at The Trades Hall in Walthamstow for beginners and improvers. I also organise and DJ several local nights – Dynamite! A retro inspired musical journey from the 40s to the 60s. I play 40s Swing, 50s R’n’B, 60s Soul and Motown, with a bit of Ska and Reggae thrown in! It’s very much a night to party and have a good time, which happens twice a year at The Trades

Hall. I also DJ at Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is! which is a regular Saturday night at The Warrant Officer Pub, where I play 70s and 80s Old skool Funk and Soul.

What sort of people come along to your monthly Saturday Social and Lindy Hop/jive classes? I get a real mix of people coming to my classes, often they are looking to get fit and have some fun (a pre-requisite for me!). Often people have seen partner dancing before and then want to learn how, or have become interested in the vintage 40s and 50s scene and want to learn too. I’ve taught teenagers and senior citizens, all are welcome!

Any plans for 2014? I’m looking forward to 2014! I’ll continue to teach classes in Walthamstow, and I’m planning more gigs in Waltham Forest - watch this space!

What would you like to see happen in Walthamstow? I would love the old cinema to re-open as a cinema and community space. It would be fabulous to dance in a venue with such a wealth of history.

Last question – what’s Walthamstow’s best kept secret? The Windmill Restaurant, which is near the bottom of the market. It’s the best Portuguese Tapas bar in the borough – definitely worth a visit!

WalthamstowDiaryBetween forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17

A new E List column for a new year, and I can honestly say this has been the hardest one to write yet. I’ve started it at least a dozen times, on topics ranging from pubs to Christmas markets but nothing seemed to work. It’s diffi cult to write when you have something on your mind, and I’ve been preoccupied with work over the last month, or should I say the prospect of having no work. When I was told I was being made redundant I felt like the world had suddenly crumbled around me. I know that worse things can happen, but I have never been out of work and the prospect terrifi ed me. I spent weeks with a knot in my stomach, that same kind of feeling I used to get before going back to school after the summer holidays.

On Wednesday mornings I volunteer at one of the Waltham Forest Emergency Night Shelters. The Wednesday after I had been told about redundancy, I headed off for my shift feeling rather sorry for myself. I work in the main hall of the shelter, packing away the bedding, sorting laundry and cleaning up. It was about 6:30 in the morning and I was in the cupboard that we store everything in trying to pack the sleeping bags away. Stacking sleeping bags is more diffi cult than you might think, sort of like playing a giant game of tetris. I was fi ghting with the bedding when one of the residents asked me if we had any carrier bags. As I handed over the bag, I asked him how he was, “mustn’t grumble” he said with a smile. He then packed everything he owned into the carrier and headed out into the cold Walthamstow morning.

After my shift, walking along Hoe Street on the way to the tube, I thought about the man at the shelter with his world in a carrier bag and a smile on his face. I decided what my new year’s resolution would be, to stop grumbling and get on with things. So here’s to 2014, whatever it may bring.
