There is now a lovely open area with seats and a picnic table, which have been provided by the parish council, all over looking the pond. I know there is more work planned to improve the site even further, but it has now become not only a mini nature reserve but a lovely quiet spot for the use of residents. Thank you George and Sandra, you have done a magnificent job! Issue 69 The DRIFT 1 The Drift – Thank You Thank you to those people who have donated towards this edition of The Drift. • Wales were available. We have received knitting patterns forRustle the Hedgehog, any knitted hedgehogs will be sent toWilton Lodge to go on display and sold to raise money toprotect these endangered creatures. A draw was made to seewho would attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace withthe Duchess of Cornwall and the winner was Nan Austin. Twoletters, one from John Tucker and another from Rosemary andAlan Davis, thanked everyone involved in organising the QuizNight and for the catering. This was a very successful andenjoyable evening which raised 389.48. It was agreed todonate 100 of this to the defibrillator fund. The pantomimegroup sent a letter thanking everyone for the cakes wesupplied. Angela asked for any nominations for theCommittee to be handed in at the April meeting. Treasurers Report: A photo of Diana in hospital following herhip operation was passed round showing her holding theapplication form for the London Marathon! We all sent ourbest wishes. We now have enough funds for the balance ofthe Kerling equipment and the purchase of some new croquetmallets. We have sent ACWW 62.11 and are collectingpostage stamps for them.Because a number of our younger members are unable toattend daytime lunches, it was thought we would try having ameal in the evening which will be in May. On the table werevarious forms for future events:- Voting for 12 new members on the Board of Trustees- Tiverton Canal trip, June 24th, 19.80 including the coachthere and a tip. We then welcomed our speaker, Mr Malcolm Welshman, subject It's a Vets Life. Malcolms father was in the armyand the family lived in Africa when he was a child. Wherethey lived there were lots of snakes. Whilst sitting on the looone day a cobra came into the bathroom! One dark nightwhen he was in bed he heard a strange rustling sound. Whenhe put the light on he saw thousands of soldier ants walkingthrough. They swept up enough to fill 5 cardboard boxes thenext morning, but the ants had eaten Malcolms ducks andbantams. The family had many pet animals during their timein Africa including an African bush dog called Poucher. Oneday Poucher came home with a badly gashed leg and it wasseeing the local doctor repairing the wound that madeMalcolm decide to become a vet.Another of their pets was an African Grey parrot called Polly(what else?). She had a very powerful beak and a bad temperand she especially hated Malcolms father. Malcolm was verywary of her but one day when he was carrying his fish tank heknocked it and the glass broke and out came all the fish.Malcolm was very upset and began crying but Polly came overand gave him a kiss and started crying too! After that she wasalways affectionate to Malcolm. She was a great mimic. Oneday the Colonels wife came to tea and Polly said to herYouve got droopy drawers and then in his fathers voiceHow about it? How about it? When coming home to the UKPolly came by sea and picked up some swear words in aLiverpool accent. She could mimic various sounds from thekitchen and would make the sound of the doorbell ringing andthe dog would always go to answer it. In his fathers voice shewould say What's the ruddy matter with you? during familyarguments. She had a knack for saying things at theappropriate time. She didnt like having a bath. One dayMalcolm was in the garden during the summer going to get thewater to bath her. She kept running in front of him sayingStop it Malcolm, stop it Malcolm.Just as he qualified as a vet, she developed a tumour in herthroat and was dying. In desperation he operated on her onthe kitchen table to remove the tumour. The operation was asuccess and after three days she rallied and looked at himsaying Wotcha Malc!Malcolm then worked at London Zoo and was called upon totreat Suzy, a white rhino. She had collapsed in the corner of

her pen. He wasn't too sure what to do but managed to getinto her pen to give her antibiotics. By the second day shewas a lot better and by the third day she was standing up.Malcolm discovered she had a sweet tooth so the rest of hermedication was given in jam sandwiches. Another animalbrought in to Malcolms practice was a woolly monkey whodbeen named Bolton because he kept escaping. He had atummy ache so he was given a thorough examination and an x-Ray which proved he had swallowed a bolt! He told theowner not to let it happen again but it did. The nextoperation was longer and more complicated. Whilstrecovering he escaped from his cage at the vets in the zoobut they lured him back with bananas.Malcolm later settled in West Sussex where he practiced as avet and also wrote books and features for various papers andmagazines. His books feature a vet named Paul Mitchell butare based on Malcolms own experiences.

***********************Report from meeting held on 16th April 2015:Angela welcomed everyone and birthday cards were given out.Sandy and Frank are retiring from setting out the tables eachmonth and they were presented with a plant with our thanks.Minutes of the previous meeting were read and signed.Hazelbury Plucknett WI have invited us to view the Centenarycelebrations at Lane's Hotel but we have already agreed towatch with Horton WI. Linda Tucker is resigning from her jobas Trustee for the Hall (TMH) and Barbara Gault agreed to takeover. Eileen Luker agreed to be the new Sick Visitor. We have again been asked to make cakes for the WI stall atGlastonbury but agreed that it would be best if we gave adonation of 30 towards the cost of ingredients as we are atquite a distance. A number of Rustle the hedgehogs hadbeen knitted and were on display. Details of various outingswere announced and names taken. It has been agreed not tohave the trade table at each meeting in future but to haveone about 3 or 4 times a year specialising in cakes andpreserves, Christmas, Bring and Buy and possibly one other. We are still collecting postage stamps for the ACWW. Angelaasked members to think about nominations for the WICommittee which will be required next month. We then welcomed our speaker, Mr. David Duff, giving a talkentitled Will's Women a nun, a tart and a dark lady! Heexplained that as well as being extremely clever and artistic inhis writing, William Shakespeare was also very down to earth. His characters were like real people and he put women intohis plays which was not usually done in his time (even thoughon stage they had to be portrayed by young men or boysbecause women weren't allowed on stage).Mr Duff talked us through the plot of Measure for Measurewhich is the play featuring the nun, and June Chubbvolunteered to do some readings with Mr Duff where she readthe part of the nun. Troilus and Cressida was the next playfeatured and that was where the tart appeared. This playillustrates both idealism and realism. The Dark Lady of thesonnets was next. All the theatres in London were closed atthis time because of the plague, so William Shakespeare wasasked to write sonnets instead of plays. They were all writtenin Iambic Pentameter which was difficult to do, and Mr Duffread Shall I compare thee to a summer's day to June toillustrate this form of writing. It was believed by some this showed that Shakespeare washomosexual, but A.L. Rowse used his historical skills andknowledge to argue this was not true.Barbara Gault

'Established' is a good word, much used in garden books,'The plant, when established' ...Oh, become established quickly, quickly, garden! For I am fugitive, I am very fugitive -

Those that come after me will gather these roses,And watch, as I do now, the white wisteriaBurst, in the sunshine, from its pale green sheath.

Planned. Planted. Established. Then neglected,Till at last the loiterer by the gate will wonderAt the old, old cottage, the old wooden cottage,And say, 'One might build here, the view is glorious; This must have been a pretty garden once.''Time' - Mary Ursula Bethell.

The last talk of our Autumn / Winter calendar took place onthe 9th April 2015 with Steve Fry, from the Gold Club, delivering an informative and entertaining presentation ofGardening for Wildlife which prompted plenty of audience

The gardener does not love to talk,He makes me keep the gravel walk; And when he puts his tools away,He locks the door and takes the key.

TATWORTH WIVES GROUPHester Down writes:At our meeting on 7th May our speaker was Ann Plested whotalked to us about her pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostelain Northern Spain. Last year Ann walked approximately 900kilometres of the Camino (Spanish for the Way) starting atSomport and arriving at the Cathedral of St James some twomonths later. She walked alone so that she could go at her own pace, butmet many interesting people along the way who were alsomaking the same pilgrimage. She travelled light, carrying onlythe essentials she needed for the journey, and stayed inhostels along the route. She carried a Camino passportwhich the hostels stamped as evidence of her progress. Shedescribed to us the varied scenery she passed through on herway and the variable weather afternoons could be very hotso she started each days walk at 5.00 am and stopped at barsor cafs for breakfast on the way allowing her to rest in theheat of the day. So Anns journey followed a regular daily pattern like that ofall pilgrims down the ages living day by day constantlymoving on always vulnerable and always with a strongsense of dependence on God but always looking forward tothe fulfilment of reaching her destination, which Ann didwithout any major mishap or injury. There will be no meeting in June, but we are holding a GardenParty on Friday 19th June from 2.30 to 4.30 pm at Nan

GOOD NEWS ON RURAL CRIME FIGURESFrom Avon and Somerset Constabulary:New figures for rural crime reports show a 16% reductionacross the Avon and Somerset area. The force began a new method of assessing the impact of ruralcrime in February 2014 by recording the number of crimesagainst businesses or properties which rely on the land for aliving. Initiatives weve used to tackle rural crime in that timehave been the Horse and Farm Watch schemes, operationsagainst burglaries and the training of even more officers andPCSOs in countryside crimes such as poaching.Sgt Stuart Williams of the Rural Crime Team said: Naturallywere very pleased about these figures, but we cant becomplacent whilst there are new victims and new offencesevery day.Nationally and regionally there is plenty of determinationand energy going into fighting rural crime which means thatsharing resources and ideas is better than it ever has been. The Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset is amember of the National Rural Crime Network of about 20

forces, and locally the force is a member of a regional groupas well as organising a forum. Its members include the Exmoor National Park Authority, NFU,South West Business Forum, Environment Agency, CountryLandowners Association and Trading Standards officers. The number of rural crimes recorded from 1 February to 30April 2014 was 223. This compares to 187 in the correspondingmonths this year.Across all the rural beats within Avon and Somerset in thosesame periods there was a 5.4% reduction of recorded crime;from 6,663 to 6,301.

The Time Has Come .....I will be standing down as coordinating editor of The Drift afterthe current year. I will continue up to and including theDecember 2015 issue.I feel that The Drift would be better in the hands of someoneyounger.I have taken the liberty of discussing my decision with mycolleague Phil Pepperrell, who does sterling work on the layoutand artwork, and I understand that he wishes to stand down atthe same time.

The Residents Action group is having its AGM on Tuesday 16thJune and is the opportunity to both hear reports on theactivities it supports on our behalf, and to put forward yourown views. The details are on page one, and no doubt The Drift will figureprominently.
