Throughout my experience of many, many Liturgi- cal seasons, the 50th day after Easter has been titled Pentecost or Whitsunday. Needing some clari- fication on this matter and wanting to know more, I decided to research these liturgical labels. Here’s what I discovered: Pentecost, a Greek term meaning fiftieth, was assigned to the Jewish Feast of Seven Weeks, as it culminated on the fiftieth day after Passover. On this feast, called Shavuot, the first-bounties of the harvest were presented. Later, the “Giving of the Law” by Moses was observed on that day. Nowadays, the fiftieth day after Easter is called Pentecost. Our recognition stems back to the events of Acts 2. The Holy Spirit descends on the Apostles, appearing as a rush of wind and tongues of fire. This event fulfilled Christ’s promise of the spirit’s return. It also signaled the sending of the church into the world. So far, the evidence points to Pentecost as being a day marker and event. But what about Whitsunday? Whitsunday is a distortion of White Sunday. Also know as Whitsun, this term is used in England and Ireland by Anglicans and Methodists to denote the Day of Pentecost and commemorate the events of Acts. The term alludes to the practice of the newly baptized (those baptized at the Vigil of Pentecost) wearing white baptismal vestments to church on the Day of Pentecost. So, what did I reap from this investigation? A recognition of ancient and spiritual events, signifi- cance of terminology, and a discovery of meaning- ful customs. —Henry Evans

The Day of Pentecost or Whitsunday?

Throughout my experience of many, many Liturgi-cal seasons, the 50th day after Easter has been titled Pentecost or Whitsunday. Needing some clari-fication on this matter and wanting to know more, I decided to research these liturgical labels. Here’s what I discovered:

Pentecost, a Greek term meaning fiftieth, was assigned to the Jewish Feast of Seven Weeks, as it culminated on the fiftieth day after Passover.

A recognition of ancient and spiritual events, signifi-cance of terminology, and a discovery of meaning-ful customs.

Financial Report

CHANGE—from pg. 1

We want to continue our Chili Cook-Off participa-tion, with the core organizing team still intact. We are moving forward with planning for participation in this fall’s event. Beginning this year, we will use the proceeds to benefit the needs of St. George’s and St. Mark. The Mission Leadership Team has discussed initial plans at the May meeting, and you will be hearing more as we move forward. With the loss of FNCA, AmeriCorps, and Franklin School support, we will need more help from our St. George’s and St. Mark families to pull it off.

Many might not know what goes into preparing and selling about 250 gallons of white chili over 2 days, so here’s a quick overview. We have already re-served our spot for the weekend, begun planning, and will continue through the summer. Around Au-gust, we finalize what supplies and food we will need and begin ordering. Later in August, a team will start grinding, cooking, vacuum sealing, and freezing the cooked chicken for the weekend (which takes five to six sessions of 5 hours each).

On October 11, a kitchen crew of 3-5 people will be cooking and delivering the Chili to the booth. Work commences at 7 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The booth requires a crew of 6-8 people to sell and serve chili from 10:30 a.m. un-til 10:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. At 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, a teardown crew of 4 to 5 people will disassemble the booth, clean up the area, and transport all equipment and remaining supplies back to St. George’s.

It takes many people and much effort to pull off the weekend, and make this year a success. Watch fu-ture newsletters for information on how you can contribute your time and talent toward the St. George’s and St. Mark Chili Cook-Off.

Books Shared Among Friends Participating in St. George’s Book Club is a wonderful opportunity to grow, connect and share with fellow Christians. On the fourth Thursday of each month, Book Club meets at a restaurant or home for dinner and discussion. One member chooses the “book of the month” and may or may not lead the review. During discussions, members learn and grow through the reflections of others, and varied views are honored. Book Club is open to all parishioners and their friends. Please con-sider attending the book club and join in the fun!

In June, Book Club is reading In this Our Life by Ellen Glasgow. Kinship gone awry, decaying southern aris-tocracy, wrecked marriages, and social injustice are key themes of this Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Henry Evans, who is leading this month’s discussion, describes the book as “A Street Car Named Desire meets Gone with the Wind.” Please plan to join the club on June 27, 5:30 p.m. in the backroom of Copper Fire, 200 E Main St, Belleville, IL Please phone or e-mail reservations to the church office, 618-233-6320, [email protected], or contact Sue Vaughn at 618-624-1909.
